Lotus Carroll1,775,031This is the Event for our September 2013 Self Portrait Challenge: A Great Cell Phone Photo. Just because you use a cell phone doesn't mean your self portrait has to be of the "facebook style" mobile or reflection variety. That little guy has a camera inside it, so treat it like one! Here is where you enter your ONE Self Portrait using only a cell phone to capture and process (no computer software post processing!). Your photo must have been captured this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST September 30th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tutorial & Tips* Need some tips and inspiration for this challenge? Have no fear! That's why we're here. :) The amazing @110573952887886961621 made a tutorial about shooting cell phone photos to get you inspired - see it here: http://goo.gl/z3IZ23 He also posted a video of his process - see it here: http://goo.gl/vzcRHL *Remember these Do's and Don'ts to get the best photo:* *DO take the time to set up your shot thoughtfully. *DO invest time and effort and try more than once to get it right. *DO make sure your lens is clean. *DO take your photo in adequate light so it's not grainy, blurry, or dark. *DO put the cell phone down and use a timer - stop taking all your photos by holding the phone and pointing at yourself or a mirror. *DO try different angles for the best composition. *DO read the posts in our Tutorials Category and try the concepts and ideas you learn from them: http://goo.gl/uSUULE  *DO try different apps and see what works best for you. *DO be aware of your background! It makes a huge difference! Is there junk in the room behind you? If yes, it's not a good place to shoot. ETC. *DO NOT just slap a filter or cheesy effect on and call it a day - take the time to try different edits and pay attention to the elements of your photo.  *DO NOT point your phone at a mirror and take a reflection photo where we can see your phone. *DO NOT have your arms in the photo as you're holding the phone out in front of or above you. *DO NOT duckface. *DO NOT showcase your cleavage as the main subject. *Here's a list of Photo Apps you can try out:* Snapseed VSCOcam Retouch (cloning tool!) '58 Chevy in Downtown Havana
Havana, Cuba - 2012

In a  little less than pristine condition,  this 1958 Chevy is sitting at a stoplight in downtown Havana. This busy street corner is a typical street scene in downtown Havana.  People are lining up for lunch at Dinos Pizza.

Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse
Cape Elizabeth, Maine

In the summer of 1998, my daughter had just graduated from High School and I had just turned 50 years old.  To celebrate these two events, my family made a trip to Maine.  Photographing lighthouses was high on my list of things to do.  This photo was taken on film using a Nikon N90.  The negative was scanned a few years ago with an Epson V700 Scanner.

In1827 it was decided that Cape Elizabeth needed a navigational aid.  So that the light would not be confused with Portland Head or Wood Island, the decision was made to construct twin lighthouses.  The east tower would have a fixed light and the west tower would have a revolving light.  By 1855 the west light was turned off and the east light was fitted with an occulting third-order lens.  Both lighthouse still stand.  This photo is what is known as the Cape ElizabethLighthou... more »

Caballero de Paris
Old Havana  - La Habana Vieja

Jose Maria Lopez Lledin, affectionately known as the “Caballero de Paris” still haunts the old Havana city streets that were his home.  Nobody knows if he was a Vagabond, Intellectual, Artist, or Philosopher, but his bronze statue outside the San Francisco de Assisi church in the old colonial city and has become something of a tourist attraction and a delight to tourist.  Truely one of the legendary characters fo Old Havana.

7 Foot Knoll Lighthouse
Baltimore, Maryland

Maryland’s first two lighthouses were built to mark the confluence of Chesapeake Bay and the Patapsco River, which led upstream to the important port of Baltimore. Bodkin Island Lighthouse, constructed in 1822, was placed at the southern side of the river entrance, and North Point Lighthouse was erected at the northern side of the entrance in 1824.

One of the countries earliest screwpile lighthouse, Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse was  erected on Seven Foot Knoll in the mouth of the Patapsco River to replace Bodkin Island Lighthouse.

When completed in 1855, Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse consisted of a one-story, circular, iron dwelling, with a diameter of forty feet, which rested atop nine iron screwpiles, a central pile and eight others placed at the angles of an octagon.

A fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed in the lighthouse’s circular lantern room to produce a fixed white light at a focal plane of forty-four feet above the water, and a 500-pound fog bell was struck by machinery during times of limited visibility.

The lighthouse was in manned operation for 133 years.  In 1948 the lighthouse was automated.  The lack of a resident keeper was not good news for Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse, as it began to quickly deteriorate and led the Coast Guard to declare it excess property in 1969. The lighthouse was donated to the Mariners Museum in Newport News, but a year later, the contractor hired to maintain the structure went bankrupt, and the museum gave up its claims to the lighthouse in 1975.

The lighthouse was saved when in 1988 the City of Baltimore moved the lighthouse to Pier 5 as part of a redevelopment plan for the harbor.

Happy Wednesday

Thought I would reshare a post from a Wednesday in August 2012 that I posted originally to #windowwednesday  with +Jules Falk Hunter

Havana Sky
It was our first night in Cuba and we walked a few blocks down the street from our hotel to see what the "beach" looked like.  It turns out that the beach along that stretch is nothing but a lava flow and is all rock, however, people were still swimming.  What we did find along the way was an amazing structure, the Hotel Panorama.  The hotel was a geometric wonder, full of blue glass reflecting the blue evening sky.  It was quite a sight to behold.

Caswell Beach, North Carolina on the Outer Banks

While looking through old Lighthouse Images for a lighthouse that I had not previously posted and image of, I ran across this shot from a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Taken with a Nikon N90 on film and scanned later, It is of the Oak Island Lighthouse.  The lighthouse, located on the lower part of the Outer Banks, stands 153 feet tall and sits on a slight rise placing he top of the light at 169 feet above sea level.  Built in 1958, it is not what most people expect of a traditional lighthouse  It is constructed of concrete and does not have the traditional spiral stairs of most lighthouses.  It instead has as series of ships ladders with a total of 131 steps to the lantern gallery level.  When constructed it was the brightest lighthouse in the US and second brightest in the world.  It waslighte... more »

The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, built in 1829, is the oldest lighthouse in Michigan.  The tower was originally 65 feet tall with an Argon lamp.  As traffic on the Great Lakes increased, by the 1850's there was a need for better navigational aids.  In 1857 a Fourth order Fresnel Lens was added.  In 1862 the tower was raised to 82 feet tall to accommodate the Fresnel len's superior range.

Pearl Harbor

On December 7th, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, hundreds of Japanese planes attacked Pearl Harbor and the Island of Oahu, Hawaii. The devastating surprise attack killed 2,403 and wounded over 1,000. It marked USA’s entrance into WWII.

The USS Arizona battleship was bombed and sunk that morning during the attack.  The remains of many of the 1,177 U.S. military personnel who died aboard the Arizona are still inside the submerged wreck.  It was the greatest loss of life ever in the attack of a U.S. warship.

Diamond Head Lighthouse
Oahu, Hawaii

No trip to Hawaii is complete without taking the time to climb to the top of Diamond Head.  The view is amazing looking down on the Diamond Head Lighthouse with its Red Capped White Lighthouse set off against the beautiful turquoise surf.  The view in all directions is breathtaking.

The Diamond Head Lighthouse was first constructed with a masonry tower made from coral-rock excavated from a quarry on Oahu.  It had a french built lantern room and third-order Fresnel lens.  It was first lit on July 1, 1899.  By 1916 the old tower had growing cracks and a new masonry tower was constructed and the lantern room and lens moved to the new tower.

Haig Point Lighthouse
Daufuskie Island, South Carolina

Across the Calibogue Sound to the west of Hilton Head's Harbour Town Lighthouse is Daufuskie Island. In 1871, Congress appropriated funds to built a pair of Range Lights to guide ships coming into Calibogue Sound.  They went into operation in October of 1873. The Rear Range Light was constructed as the keeper's house with a light tower on the roof.  It was equiped with a fifth-order fresnel lens at a focal plane of 65 feet.  Located 750 yards to the south was a shorter tower that served as the front range light.  It could be moved on wooden rails to compensate for the shifting channel in Calibogue Sound.  By aligning the two lights, you could safely follow the channel to enter Calibogue Sound.  Today what is known as the Haig Point Lighthouse was the Rear Range Light.

Harbour Town Lighthouse - Hilton Head, South Carolina

The lighthouse, completed in 1970, is considered by some purist to not be an authentic lighthouse. Located at the marina at Harbour Town on Sea Pines Resort, it was privately built and is private aid to navigation and was originally built to attract boaters and tourist. The lighthouse, however, is listed on navigation charts and as a navigation aid can be seen from a distance of 15 miles.

The distinctive red and white lighthouse instantly became popular and today is the most recognizable symbol of Hilton Head Island and the Sea Pines Resort. Each year it is seen by millions of golf fans world wide who view The Heritage Golf Tournament. We were far, far, away from anywhere out in the middle of Nicaragua.  We were a number of kilometers down this dirt road from the nearest paved road which was a few kilometers from the town of Rio Blanco.  Rio Blanco is on one of the main roads that you can travel from Managua, the capitol, to the Atlantic Coast.  Rio Blanco is where the paved road ends and you have to take a dirt road the rest of the way across the country.  That being said, we were a long way from anything.

After checking into our hotel in Havana, we walked over to look at the beach.  We were very surprised to find only what looked liked a lava flow instead of a beautiful sandy beach.  Further down the coast you can find those beautiful sandy beaches that we expected, but not here.  Even with this rough surface, people were still swimming in the ocean.

This photo is what is known as the Cape ElizabethLighthou... more »

Blue Day in Havana
Streets of Havana, Cuba - 2012

Two Blue Classic cars that are not the American Classic cars that most think of in Havana.  We have a 1959 Mercedes and a 1956 Desoto Diplomat.  The Desoto Diplomat was for sale outside of the United States only,  It was based on the Plymouth with some trim and grill changes.
