American Museum of Natural History376,437There are about a million near-Earth asteroids that are large enough to substantially damage or destroy a major city. With current space technology, scientists know how to deflect the majority of hazardous near-Earth objects. But prevention is only possible if nations work together on detection and deflection. Learn about the risks and the steps that are needed to avoid these potential natural disasters from a group of astronauts and cosmonauts who recently helped develop recommendations to the United Nations for defending Earth from asteroid impact. Neil deGrasse Tyson hosts the discussion, which will be streamed live at amnh.org/live beginning at 11 am EST on October 25.  Watch here: http://bit.ly/15XV1np The discussion takes place the same week the United Nations General Assembly adopts measures creating an international decision-making mechanism for planetary asteroid defense. Participants include: Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium Thomas Jones, former NASA astronaut, senior research scientist at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, and Association of Space Explorers (ASE) Near Earth Objects Committee member Russell Schweickart, former NASA astronaut, ASE co-founder and Near Earth Objects Committee member, and co-founder and chairman emeritus of the B612 Foundation Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, former Romanian astronaut, ASE co-founder and Near Earth Objects Committee member, and vice president of the European International Institute for Risk, Security, and Communication Management Soichi Noguchi, engineer and JAXA astronaut, and ASE Near Earth Objects Committee member Edward Lu, former NASA astronaut, ASE Near Earth Objects Committee member, and co-founder, chairman, and CEO of the B612 Foundation This panel discussion is cohosted by the Museum and the ASE, the professional society of astronauts and cosmonauts.Live Stream: Defending Earth from Asteroids with Neil Tyson2013-10-25 11:00:0020

NASA2,516,715NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk will discuss the first contracted cargo resupply flight to the International Space Station during a Google+ Hangout from 1-1:30 p.m. EDT Friday, Oct. 5. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon cargo spacecraft are scheduled to lift off at 8:35 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7 from at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.  Bolden and Musk will talk about the flight, which will be the first of 12 contracted for NASA by SpaceX to resupply the space station. The SpaceX flights under the Commercial Resupply Services contract will restore an American capability to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to the orbiting laboratory -- a feat not achievable since the retirement of the space shuttle.  Followers on Twitter may ask a question in advance of or during the event using the hashtag #askNASA . On Google+, leave a comment in the thread on this event page with questions marked with #askNASA  on the morning of the event. To join the hangout, visit the NASA's Google+ page at 1 p.m. EDT on Friday, Oct. 5:  http://plus.google.com/+NASA The Dragon will be filled with about 1,000 pounds of supplies. Hubble Space Telescope6,498,819A new, improved portrait of Hubble’s deepest-ever view of the universe, called the eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, looks far away and back in time to reveal faint galaxies at one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see.  This is the culmination of 10 years of observing a patch of sky that contains thousands of far-flung galaxies. The full-color XDF image shows previously unseen galaxies as they looked in the early universe, billions of years ago. Astronomers continue studying this area of sky with Hubble. Extensive ongoing observing programs, led by Harry Teplitz and Richard Ellis at the California Institute of Technology, will allow astronomers to study the deep-field galaxies with Hubble to even greater depths in ultraviolet and infrared light prior to the launch of JWST. These new results will provide even more extraordinary views of this region of the sky and will be shared with the public in the coming months.                                Want to know more? You can participate in an online webinar and hear three key astronomers of the XDF observing team describe how they assembled the landmark observation. They will illustrate and explain what Hubble’s powerful new view tells us about the evolving universe.   Viewers can send in questions for our panel of experts to discuss. The webinar will be broadcast at 1 p.m. Thursday Sept 27. Join us here for this Google Event, or watch and leave questions at the HubbleSite YouTube Channel. (http://www.youtube.com/hubblesitechannel). You can also ask your questions in advance here in comments, and we'll pass them on to our panel. The panelists will be: Garth Illingworth, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is the principal investigator of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field 2009 (HUDF09) Project.   Pascal Oesch, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a co-investigator with the HUDF09 Project.   Dan Magee, programmer/data analyst at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a co-investigator with the HUDF09 Project. I have a dream, Trump edition.

"  16. On Election Day in November 2016, Trump wins 3 to 5 percent of the total vote in key swing states like Florida, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Ohio, and Indiana, siphoning off enough votes from the GOP candidate to hand those states' Electoral College votes to the Democratic nominee.  "

Progressives worry about the left vote getting split, time for concern from the cons.

Glory hallelujah!
It's a miracle!

Last week, we showed you a video from the popular show "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" that explored the role televangelists have in American culture with his own example, "Out Lady of Perpetual Exemption."

His church has been more successful than expected. Read about it here: http://ow.ly/RlqS4___Glory hallelujah!

Get out and vote!

http://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=vot&document=index&lang=e

IT ONLY TAKES ONE DAY!
I listen to and watch the rhetoric being thrown at us by the politicians and frankly just laugh. But then I cry....because less than 40% of Canadians voted in the last federal election. This means that over 60% of the citizens of this GREAT COUNTRY don't give a shit about their lives here.

You need to understand: WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT!!!! You and I and the guy across the road. Us, we, me, you are the government. If you want to have a say in the way that this country is governed, then you have to vote. If you only stand on the side lines, then you get what you deserve, and unfortunately the rest of us get what we don't want.

If the First Nations want to make change then they too have to vote.

Those being elected have to understand that they are not the boss, parent or Cub Scout Leader; we are. They all say: "Elect me and I'll create more jobs, lower taxes and fight terrorism". How? Personally, I want to SEE, TOUCH AND FEEL that plan.

The OPPORTUNITY FOR CHANGE IS BEING PRESENTED TO US, perhaps not for a different party to rule, but for we - the REAL Government - to take charge of the change.

To control change, we must be out in front of it and guide it; we shouldn't follow it. Change only takes one day............election day.
As Lee Iaccoca said: "Lead, follow or get out of the way."
Your job in all of this is to VOTE on election day.

Just imagine if 60% of us spoke our minds? What if all of us took charge?

GET OUT AND VOTE!

PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH OTHER CANADIANS, OR WHOEVER.___Get out and vote!

Scott Adams of Dilbert fame has a blog that decrypts the salesmanship methods of Donald Trump.  The essay is revealing and fascinating: “As far as I can tell, Trump’s “crazy talk” is always in the correct direction for a skilled persuader. When Trump sets an “anchor” in your mind, it is never random. And it seems to work every time. Now that Trump owns FOX, and I see how well his anchor trick works with the public, I’m going to predict he will be our next president. I think he will move to the center on social issues (already happening) and win against Clinton in a tight election.”

Um… did I also mention that Scott is also – though a genius – also a bona fide crackpot much of the time? “Trump owns Fox,” my patoot.  The Donald’s truce with Roger Ailes is based on mutual self- interest that shifts from day to day.  And the notion that Trump might actually becomepresident is based upon compari... more »

Um… did I also mention that Scott is also – though a genius – also a bona fide crackpot much of the time? “Trump owns Fox,” my patoot.  The Donald’s truce with Roger Ailes is based on mutual self- interest that shifts from day to day.  And the notion that Trump might actually become president is based upon comparisons to 1980’s Ronald Reagan that are not pertinent.  Reagan was likeable, for one thing, and would have lost anyway, but for the Iran hostage crisis and Jimmy Carter’s patriotic willingness to let Paul Volcker cure inflation, even in an election year. (Something no other politician would have done for the country – Carter was our only grownup president.)

Still, like all the talk show comedians, I am rooting for Donald to last a good while.  He’s mixing things up and shaking people out of ruts, and drawing white males to at long last question their confederate loyalty to Marse Rupert.  Now… please… Jerry Brown and Jon Stewart… do the same thing!

As I have recently upgraded Cameras I find myself with two extra NP-FM500 batteries made by BM (Chinese knock off from Amazon) that I'd like to find a good home for. They are in good condition just under a year old and they have about 70% the capacity of the original Sony units.
So If you have need of 2 used BM-NPFM500 batteries FOR FREE just private message me.
I will award based on closest proximity to my location, QEW & Hurontario area in south Mississauga Ontario, then first received request. My basis for deciding is that if you are nearby I can deliver them to you easily.
If no one is in the immediate area I can post them collect but that will cost the recipient about $15 - 20 Cdn or what ever Canada Post deems appropriate for collect surface mail of semi hazardous goods and the associated transaction details.

I had a pleasant surprise when I got home today.
My new camera came in!
So of course I had to try it out even though by the time I got back from picking it up it was late and the light was fading.
I will be having fun over the weekend though.

To those who have successfully upgraded to #windows10   with no difficulties my hearty congratulations!
My lot is not so carefree.
After many hours of prep, clearing off unneeded files, scan disc, defraging, making a disc image for backup and several attempts to to the install via online then downloading and burning the Win10 .iso to DVD and trying that still no joy, I am a frustrated potential MS Win10 user.
After some research I have discovered some info that should have been included in a read me before you attempt to install file such as disconnect all peripherals except keyboard and mouse, uninstall all anti-virus and malware programs (turning them off is insufficient).

Of course the failure happens late in the process about 78% of the way through.
After three days of trying with no success I have decided I really don't need a new, supposedly free, OS at this time.  ___

He has replied, in Italian and Foo Fighters are now heading their way.

I found a new hobby.
Let people stage lavish weddings so I can crash them and shoot the spectacle.
I have no idea who these folks are but they put on a nice show at the Toronto Botanical Gardens on Lawrence on Saturday.
It is said that the average wedding is over $31,000. I believe it. I'm fairly sure this one went a ways beyond that.
TBG has a pretty good operation going on catering to the affluent wedding trade.

I have new found respect for folks who shoot weddings for a living.
It must make for gruelling days and lots of fun dealing with customer expectations and payment quibbles.

Headed to my bro-in-law Bob Weir's 50th Anniversary Grateful Dead #FareTheeWell shows - the final five shows. I still have the shirt I bought at my first show in 1986, I was 12 years old. Their music has been part of my life for almost three decades - it's the end of an era. #Dead50 #GD50___Also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfNewpF-j1E
