American Museum of Natural History371,162There are about a million near-Earth asteroids that are large enough to substantially damage or destroy a major city. With current space technology, scientists know how to deflect the majority of hazardous near-Earth objects. But prevention is only possible if nations work together on detection and deflection. Learn about the risks and the steps that are needed to avoid these potential natural disasters from a group of astronauts and cosmonauts who recently helped develop recommendations to the United Nations for defending Earth from asteroid impact. Neil deGrasse Tyson hosts the discussion, which will be streamed live at amnh.org/live beginning at 11 am EST on October 25.  Watch here: http://bit.ly/15XV1np The discussion takes place the same week the United Nations General Assembly adopts measures creating an international decision-making mechanism for planetary asteroid defense. Participants include: Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium Thomas Jones, former NASA astronaut, senior research scientist at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, and Association of Space Explorers (ASE) Near Earth Objects Committee member Russell Schweickart, former NASA astronaut, ASE co-founder and Near Earth Objects Committee member, and co-founder and chairman emeritus of the B612 Foundation Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, former Romanian astronaut, ASE co-founder and Near Earth Objects Committee member, and vice president of the European International Institute for Risk, Security, and Communication Management Soichi Noguchi, engineer and JAXA astronaut, and ASE Near Earth Objects Committee member Edward Lu, former NASA astronaut, ASE Near Earth Objects Committee member, and co-founder, chairman, and CEO of the B612 Foundation This panel discussion is cohosted by the Museum and the ASE, the professional society of astronauts and cosmonauts.Live Stream: Defending Earth from Asteroids with Neil Tyson2013-10-25 11:00:0020

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon cargo spacecraft are scheduled to lift off at 8:35 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7 from at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.  Bolden and Musk will talk about the flight, which will be the first of 12 contracted for NASA by SpaceX to resupply the space station. The SpaceX flights under the Commercial Resupply Services contract will restore an American capability to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to the orbiting laboratory -- a feat not achievable since the retirement of the space shuttle.  Followers on Twitter may ask a question in advance of or during the event using the hashtag #askNASA . On Google+, leave a comment in the thread on this event page with questions marked with #askNASA  on the morning of the event. To join the hangout, visit the NASA's Google+ page at 1 p.m. EDT on Friday, Oct. 5:  http://plus.google.com/+NASA The Dragon will be filled with about 1,000 pounds of supplies. Hubble Space Telescope6,170,640A new, improved portrait of Hubble’s deepest-ever view of the universe, called the eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, looks far away and back in time to reveal faint galaxies at one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see.  This is the culmination of 10 years of observing a patch of sky that contains thousands of far-flung galaxies. The full-color XDF image shows previously unseen galaxies as they looked in the early universe, billions of years ago. Astronomers continue studying this area of sky with Hubble. Extensive ongoing observing programs, led by Harry Teplitz and Richard Ellis at the California Institute of Technology, will allow astronomers to study the deep-field galaxies with Hubble to even greater depths in ultraviolet and infrared light prior to the launch of JWST. These new results will provide even more extraordinary views of this region of the sky and will be shared with the public in the coming months.                                Want to know more? You can participate in an online webinar and hear three key astronomers of the XDF observing team describe how they assembled the landmark observation. They will illustrate and explain what Hubble’s powerful new view tells us about the evolving universe.   Viewers can send in questions for our panel of experts to discuss. The webinar will be broadcast at 1 p.m. Thursday Sept 27. Join us here for this Google Event, or watch and leave questions at the HubbleSite YouTube Channel. (http://www.youtube.com/hubblesitechannel). You can also ask your questions in advance here in comments, and we'll pass them on to our panel. The panelists will be: Garth Illingworth, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is the principal investigator of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field 2009 (HUDF09) Project.   Pascal Oesch, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a co-investigator with the HUDF09 Project.   Dan Magee, programmer/data analyst at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a co-investigator with the HUDF09 Project. It's quite astonishing that in the post - Missile gap, Bomber gap, Saddam's WMDs, Gulf of Tonkin incident, 9 - 11 not staged from Afghanistan, water boarding didn't help find bin Laden etc, etc. world that the really serious people hear assertions of claims by anonymous Government officials they assume it must be true.

"     Western journalists claim that the big lesson they learned from their key role in selling the Iraq War to the public is that it’s hideous, corrupt and often dangerous journalism to give anonymity to government officials to let them propagandize the public, then uncritically accept those anonymously voiced claims as Truth. But they’ve learned no such lesson.   "

Argh!
(angst ridden cry of frustration with the Universe)
I have been waiting anxiously for the official announcement of +Sony 's new version of the A7r unimaginatively called the A7rii and today's the day.
However they probably should have given it a new number at that price, ie $3200 US.
It does have improvements over the current model but is it worth a 68% increase over the now discounted price of it's predecessor?
I want, but jeese that's a chunk o' change.

Part II of an excellent series by +Tim Urban of +Wait But Why.
An extremely detailed look at how we got to where we are today, transportation wise.
A bit longish but well worth the effort to read it all and wring every last morsel of truth out of it.

" Franz von Holzhausen has worked at three of these other companies. The way he sees it, “they’re trapped in their manufacturing legacy process, trapped in gas engines being their bread and butter, trapped in their dealership model, trapped in their own history.” "

Where the tax dollars go and why you hear so much about Troll N. Korea in the media.

"   We can disagree about how much to spend on what used to be called "national" missile defense (as opposed to point defenses against theater missiles), but does anyone think it’s a good idea to spend more money on the current GMD system at Fort Greely, a.k.a. the Disasta’ in Alaska, a.k.a. the Blunda’ in the Tundra?
As we have discussed in this space before, a recent National Academies panel — stacked with many long-time supporters of missile defense — recommended completely replacing the current system with brand-new interceptors, new radars, and a new concept of operations. But I am getting ahead of myself.  "

Heads up for flying pigs and snowball meltwater flowing from Hades.
A 44 year Conservative dynasty comes to an end in Alberta. I think this is more a case of the PCs being skilled at shooting themselves in the foot rather than the NDP being overwhelmingly competent at electioneering.
Americans, think in terms of Bernie Sanders being declared President (or Governor of Texas) by a substantial margin to get a feel for what a sea change this is in Canadian politics.

Earth is the only place in our solar system with liquid water on its surface. Even though water makes up only 0.03 percent of the Earth’s total mass, it covers 70 percent of the planet’s surface. Where did this water come from? Why is it mostly in liquid form? How much of it is drinkable and how vulnerable is this valuable resource? Will we ever run out? Will wars of the future be fought over access to it? Will future generations harness water from space? Is water essential to all life in the universe—or just to life on Earth?

"  Nope. Besides the dudes Googling “gyrocopter kit,” the conversation is going to be all about Inspector Gadget’s subversion of our multimillion-dollar restricted airspace defense system, who screwed up and how Homeland Security can get cracking on that force field dome to put over the Capitol. Hire some more defense contractors! We need protection!

That’s the part that’s insane.  "
