American Museum of Natural History291,707There are about a million near-Earth asteroids that are large enough to substantially damage or destroy a major city. With current space technology, scientists know how to deflect the majority of hazardous near-Earth objects. But prevention is only possible if nations work together on detection and deflection.Learn about the risks and the steps that are needed to avoid these potential natural disasters from a group of astronauts and cosmonauts who recently helped develop recommendations to the United Nations for defending Earth from asteroid impact. Neil deGrasse Tyson hosts the discussion, which will be streamed live at amnh.org/live beginning at 11 am EST on October 25. Watch here: http://bit.ly/15XV1npThe discussion takes place the same week the United Nations General Assembly adopts measures creating an international decision-making mechanism for planetary asteroid defense.Participants include:Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. NASA2,052,719NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk will discuss the first contracted cargo resupply flight to the International Space Station during a Google+ Hangout from 1-1:30 p.m. EDT Friday, Oct. 5. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon cargo spacecraft are scheduled to lift off at 8:35 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7 from at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Bolden and Musk will talk about the flight, which will be the first of 12 contracted for NASA by SpaceX to resupply the space station. The SpaceX flights under the Commercial Resupply Services contract will restore an American capability to deliver and return significant amounts of cargo, including science experiments, to the orbiting laboratory -- a feat not achievable since the retirement of the space shuttle. Followers on Twitter may ask a question in advance of or during the event using the hashtag #askNASA . On Google+, leave a comment in the thread on this event page with questions marked with #askNASA  on the morning of the event. To join the hangout, visit the NASA's Google+ page at 1 p.m. EDT on Friday, Oct. 5:  http://plus.google.com/+NASAThe Dragon will be filled with about 1,000 pounds of supplies. Hubble Space Telescope4,960,233A new, improved portrait of Hubble’s deepest-ever view of the universe, called the eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, looks far away and back in time to reveal faint galaxies at one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see.  This is the culmination of 10 years of observing a patch of sky that contains thousands of far-flung galaxies. The full-color XDF image shows previously unseen galaxies as they looked in the early universe, billions of years ago.Astronomers continue studying this area of sky with Hubble. Extensive ongoing observing programs, led by Harry Teplitz and Richard Ellis at the California Institute of Technology, will allow astronomers to study the deep-field galaxies with Hubble to even greater depths in ultraviolet and infrared light prior to the launch of JWST. These new results will provide even more extraordinary views of this region of the sky and will be shared with the public in the coming months.                              Want to know more? You can participate in an online webinar and hear three key astronomers of the XDF observing team describe how they assembled the landmark observation. They will illustrate and explain what Hubble’s powerful new view tells us about the evolving universe. Viewers can send in questions for our panel of experts to discuss. The webinar will be broadcast at 1 p.m. Thursday Sept 27. Join us here for this Google Event, or watch and leave questions at the HubbleSite YouTube Channel. (http://www.youtube.com/hubblesitechannel). You can also ask your questions in advance here in comments, and we'll pass them on to our panel. The panelists will be:Garth Illingworth, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.He is the principal investigator of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field 2009 (HUDF09) Project. Pascal Oesch, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.He is a co-investigator with the HUDF09 Project. Dan Magee, programmer/data analyst at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Fraser Cain824,747Super Science Circle for October, 2013I know it's been a while, so it's time for a new Super Science Circle - the October 2013 edition. In case you weren't aware, the Super Science Circle is a list of more than 400 people who are actively engaged on Google+ and regularly post about science and education. We've got journalists, scientists, even a few astronauts. The Super Science Circle should be your best response to anyone who tells you that Google+ is just a ghost town. If you love science, this circle will deliver the goods. If you know anyone who actively posts about science, please let me know and I'll add them to the list.2013-10-04 20:14:53415304682

Fraser Cain798,034Super Science Circle, July 2013 EditionNeed more science in your streams? Want to convince a friend that Google+ is a thriving place of science and rational thinking? Then import my Super Science Circle and be amazed at the awesomeness.PLEASE RESHARE THIS CIRCLE... FOR SCIENCE!Every single person in this circle is active on Google+ and regularly contributes high quality posts about science. You've got my personal guarantee. As always, I recommend you import this group into a temporary circle and look for people who match your interests. Then pull them over into more permanent locations in your circles. Or just wait for me to give you an update next month. If you want to be included in this circle, just make a post in the comments and I'll check out your profile.I'm looking for people who:1. Are active on Google+ (but not too active)2. Regularly post about science3. Provide context and additional information, and not just bare links or annoying memes.2013-07-16 18:35:56415255987
Paul Christen113If you want to be TOTALLY freaked out, follow this science circle. Its not mine, it was shared by (I think) +Fraser Cain .Man, a  day does not go by that I'm not amazed by the advances in science and technology.2013-06-11 13:54:194095310
Fraser Cain779,548Super Science Circle - May 2013 EditionNeed more science in your Google+? Well, here's all the science you can handle! Enjoy my latest, heavily curated edition of the Super Science Circle. Please share this circle... for Science! For the uninitiated, I maintain a circle of 450+ people who are active on Google+ and regularly post on Google+. In this circle you'll find scientists, journalists, astronauts, educators, and science enthusiasts. By importing this circle into your own circles, you'll immediately gain a vibrant and fascinating feed of amazing science stories.I recognize that it might be too much science, so I suggest you create a brand new temporary circle and evaluate the people in the circle. Only transfer the keepers to your permanent circles. Then, when I update the circle next month, rinse and repeat. Are you active on G+ and regularly post about science? +mention me and I'll check out your profile.Remember, please share this post2013-05-22 19:26:51456348088
Gailen Mapes30,103Hand Picked Photographers Circles -Canon Camera D-F - 2 of 14Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 500 members.I am now sharing one circle per day, for the reason see: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/posts/RrPNTzHhQuHAs before these circles are photographers that I admire. They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to May 15th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting Msy 1st.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday #handpickedcircles   #sharedcircles #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle2013-05-16 10:35:53175604
Richard Green12,571Here's an updated circle of people who have either +1ed, reshared, or commented on one of my posts recently.  This includes indirect public reshares, but only +1s and comments on the original posts.Since the circle is nearly full, I only included new people if they engaged with one of my non-circle-share posts.  Also, I excluded posts with over 100 +1s, for two reasons:(a) hot posts attract low-quality comments, including spam comments, and(b) as far as I can tell, Google won't give you a full list of people who plus-oned your post if there are more than 100 of them; the same goes for reshares. Thanks for reading my posts!2013-05-13 21:33:26483712686

I'm glad someone is thinking about this.
Still unforeseen events could make even the most diligent preparation ineffective at preventing 'negative outcomes'.
But it's not like that's any different from natural so called "intelligence".

Star Trek: 50 Years of Humanism
By +Brandon Fibbs
Published on Dec 15, 2014
No piece of art or entertainment has meant more to me than “Star Trek.” It continues to have a profound effect on my life and the manner in which I perceive the world around me. The half century of philosophical and metaphysical musculature stands as one of the most robust presentations and defenses of humanism ever conceived.

As with any project of this nature and scope, far more has been left on the cutting room floor than is presented here. In fact, the original cut of this video was roughly an hour long! My simultaneously euphoric and agonizing mission was not to include every perfect moment, but rather, find those moments that best represented all those I was forced to abandon. I hope I have succeeded in doing that here.

This video is divided into six chapters:

Interview with Demis Hassabis of Google, co-founder of DeepMind

Interesting snippets:

Tell me about the two companies, both out of Oxford University, that you just bought.

"These Oxford guys are amazingly talented groups of professors. One team [formerly Dark Blue Labs] will focus on natural language understanding, using deep neural networks to do that. So rather than the old kind of logic techniques for NLP, we’re using deep networks and word embeddings and so on. That’s led by Phil Blunsom. We’re interested in eventually having language embedded into our systems so we can actually converse. At the moment they are obviously prelinguistic—there is no language capability in there. So we’ll see all of those things marrying up. And the second group, Vision Factory, is led by Andrew Zisserman, a world famous computer vision guy."

When will we see this happening?

"In six months to a year’s time we’ll start seeing some aspects of what we’re doing embedded in Google Plus, natural language and maybe some recommendation systems."

What do you hope to do for Google in the long run?

"I’m really excited about the potential for general AI. Things like AI-assisted science."

What’s the big problem you’re working on now?

"The big thing is what we call transfer learning. You’ve mastered one domain of things, how do you abstract that into something that’s almost like a library of knowledge that you can now usefully apply in a new domain? That’s the key to general knowledge. At the moment, we are good at processing perceptual information and then picking an action based on that. But when it goes to the next level, the concept level, nobody has been able to do that."

One condition you set on the Google purchase was that the company set up some sort of AI ethics board. What was that about?

"It was a part of the agreement of the acquisition. It’s an independent advisory committee like they have in other areas."

Why did you do that?

"I think AI could be world changing, it’s an amazing technology. All technologies are inherently neutral but they can be used for good or bad so we have to make sure that it’s used responsibly. I and my cofounders have felt this for a long time. Another attraction about Google was that they felt as strongly about those things, too."

What has this group done?

"Certainly there is nothing yet. The group is just being formed — I wanted it in place way ahead of the time that anything came up that would be an issue. One constraint we do have— that wasn’t part of a committee but part of the acquisition terms—is that no technology coming out of Deep Mind will be used for military or intelligence purposes."

Do you feel like a committee really could make an impact on controlling a technology once you bring it into the world?

"I think if they are sufficiently educated, yes. That’s why they’re forming now, so they have enough time to really understand the technical details, the nuances of this. There are some top professors on this in computation, neuroscience and machine learning on this committee."

And the committee is in place now?

"It’s formed yes, but I can’t tell you who is on it."

Why not?

"Well, because it’s confidential. We think it’s important [that it stay out of public view] especially during this initial ramp-up phase where there is no tech— I mean we’re working on computing Pong, right? There are no issues here currently but in the next five or ten years maybe there will be. So really it’s just getting ahead of the game."

Will you eventually release the names?

"Potentially. That’s something also to be discussed."

Transparency is important in this too.

"Sure, sure. There are lots of interesting questions that have to be answered on a technical level about what these systems are capable of, what they might be able to do, and how are we going to control those things. At the end of the day they need goals set by the human programmers. Our research team here works on those theoretical aspects partly because we want to advance [the science], but also to make sure that these things are controllable and there’s always humans in the loop and so on."

An old article on the link between Colbert's truthiness and MacIntyre's emotivism.

Still unforeseen events could make even the most diligent preparation ineffective at preventing 'negative outcomes'.
But it's not like that's any different from natural so called "intelligence".

Star Trek: 50 Years of Humanism

It takes a while (~5 min.) to load but it has a progress indicator so you know what's going on. Go for a tasty beverage and by the time you get back it will be done.
I haven't shot anything yet but the focus box sure bounces around fast on continuous focus mode. ☺ ___

I've run the Google software removal tool and it seemed to help for a few days , then the pop-ups were back but were getting interrupted by a window with sup in the title that I could just close. Now today they're back.

*The establishment of community review boards that can make recommendations for police misconduct, instead of allowing police departments to police themselves.

*Defunding local police departments that use excessive force or racially profile.

*Instead of having the Department of Justice (DOJ) wholesale giving more than $250 million to local police departments annually, DOJ should only fund departments that agree to adopt DOJ best practices for training and meaningful community input.
The demilitarization of local police departments.

*Investing in programs that provide alternatives to incarceration, such as community-led restorative justice programs and community groups that educate people about their rights.  "___

Mars, Cars & Solars : Tribute to Elon Musk and Evoution of life on Earth.

A Prologue and a prophecy by Carl Sagan. His prophecy is being given shape by Elon Musk as we look into his life, his aspirations and achievements, his promises. As he prepares to lead humanity to the dawn of a space faring human civilization, we shall and must celebrate the life on earth while we are here.

I think there is a strong humanitarian argument for making life multi-planetary,in order to safeguard the existence of humanity in the event that something catastrophic were to happen, in which case being poor or having a disease would be irrelevant, because humanity would be extinct. It would be like, “Good news, the problems of poverty and disease have been solved, but the bad news is there aren’t any humans left.”

Plato writes:
That story, as it is told, has the fashion of a legend, but the truth of it lies in the occurrence of a shift of the bodies in the heavens which move round the Earth, and a destruction of the things on the Earth by fierce fire, which recurs at long intervals.

A remarkable piece of ancient wisdom, but on the whole, human culture is too fresh an invention to have preserved the scarier stuff we find in the geological record. We have no tales of mile-wide asteroid strikes, or super volcanoes, or the deep freezes that occasionally turn our blue planet white. The biosphere has bounced back from each of these shocks, but not before sacrificing terrifying percentages of its species. And even its most remarkable feats of resilience are cold comfort, for the future might subject Earth to entirely novel experiences.
If human beings are to survive these catastrophes, both the black swans and the certainties, we will need to do what life has always done: move in the service of survival. We will need to develop new capabilities, as our aquatic forebears once evolved air-gulping lungs, and bony fins for crude locomotion, struggling their way onto land. We will need to harness the spirit that moved our own species to trek into new continents, so that our recent ancestors could trickle out to islands and archipelagos, before crossing whole oceans, on their way to the very ends of this Earth. We will need to set out for new planets and eventually, new stars.___

Toronto Skyline Porn
from +Ryan Emond
Toronto Skyline Porn is what its title implies -- a full frontal visual journey through Toronto's growing skyline. The scenes were shot over the past few years from different heights and in different seasons.
Ive enjoyed showcasing Toronto in the past in a more warmhearted tone but with the evolution of the city over the last 4 years I figured a skyline short was fitting.
I used a modified GoPro on a DJI Phantom 2 for the aerial shots. All other scenes were captured with a Canon 5DM3.

Oh Hai +Sundar Pichai  !

How about a +google Moon shot program to get all the documentation for all Google products up to date?
The .pdf version of the detailed user manual for Android v5.0 and Nexus 9 would be a great place to start.

Many thanks.
