You know I live here but I never knew this.  It fits the character of the city though - during the fires we had a few years back they had sushi chefs and massage therapists for the evacuees.

A Chrome Extension we desperately need.   I haven't seen it mentioned here - probably I just missed it, because I can't be the only one who thinks Google made a mess of community navigation on the last update.   I won't go into it - it is just way too slow - too many clicks, and you have to look around the community page to find things - especially if you are a member of a number of them.

Anyone have any skills on Chrome extension development?   What is needed is an extension - something like the Gmail icon - that shows you your communities, and the number of unread posts in each community - maybe as a drop down.

Anyone know if something like that exists?  Or does anyone have any tips on community navigation?   This has seriously slowed me down.

Virtual Accelerator for Microenterprise.  I am in the process of establishing an "working group" for a small business "virtual accelerator" I am planning to deploy on Google+ - primarily using hangout and community technology, and of course the large number of highly talented professions and simple "brainpower" we all have at our disposal here, but that remains largely untapped.  See below a post I wrote yesterday to the Virtual Brain Trust Cooperative ( http://goo.gl/iIhvI ) - I think it speaks for itself.  The idea is to give smaller ventures and solopreneurs the opportunity to participate in a startup accelerator - an opportunity that for cost and other reasons is denied to many of us.

My Dad.  Everyone is posting pictures of their Fathers today, so here is mine.  It is a picture of him with my Mother years ago when they ran a little campground on the ocean near Flagler Beach, Florida.  

He was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked on December 7, 1941,  Met my Mom at a USO dance during the War.   After that, he  became a salesman selling swimsuits of all things.  Later, he started his own company putting on trade shows and events - the biggest of which was the "Detroit Boats, Sports & Vacation Show".  

When I was a kid, I sat around a big table with my family and stuffed envelops of marketing materials for the exhibitors.  I would marvel during the two week show at what he had pulled off - getting so many massive yachts into a convention hall - and there was even a fishing pond with live fish.  It wasn't an easy life though - thiswas in Mi... more »

Do you miss a Communities Stream in your Google+?
Following these steps, you can turn your Home stream into your Communities stream:

► 1. Go to each of your circle streams,
1.1. and disable "show posts in home stream"

► 2. Go to each of the communities you've joined,
2.1. and enable "show posts in home stream"
2.2. and (optionally) set "Amount" to "More"

► 3. Wait some 24 hours to have pure community posts in your Home stream
3.1. You can still use your individual Circles streams to read posts from people in your circles!

Trust in American Institutions.  I normally don't post political stuff on the weekend, but I thought this was interesting.  It is a Gallop poll on American's confidence in various institutions that they have been conducting for the past 40 years.  Only ten percent of Americans have confidence in Congress making it "least popular societal institution in U.S. history".

A few other institutions weren't doing so hot also.  Big business and organized labor were in the low twenties, but two institution stood out as being mostly trusted by Americans.   The military had a solid majority of 76 percent and small business had a respectable 65 percent.

Sales & Customer Development HOA.   We really had fun in yesterday's Hangout on Air.   This was part of the "Let's Talk About" series for entrepreneurs we have launched here and we were lucky to have sales experts +Mike Bayes and +Theresa Delgado join us.   As always, we  had a few technical glitches and this time had some problems prevented us from getting the invitations out, but we were later joined by +Rachael Alford, +Preston Odenbrett, +Laurie Varga and +Dawn Lamond.  I am reposting it here for those who missed it - hope we catch you next time.

Waze.  People here aren't going to like the title of the blog post, but the reasoning is sound.  One reason Google bought this company apparently was because it force more people into Google+.   Actually the reason Google+ will not be "a flop" is because of moves like this.  Google will be using its immense power to make sure that Google+ prevails.   They may use brute force instead of finesse but they will make sure that Google+ does prevail.

Meanwhile in Uganda.   Not a joke really, I lived in West Africa for two years, and the women carry everything on their heads.   I worked in an office building in downtown Lagos, Nigeria for a time while I was there, and I remember one of my co-workers coming in early one morning all sleepy and carrying a steaming cup of coffee on her head!

I don't know whether you've seen this yet on my website, but I've decided to accept a few applications for companies to personally hire me for their digital marketing.

Long Term Unemployed.   Surprising interview with a Romney economic adviser about the long term unemployed.   I will give the guy lots of credit for recognizing the gravity of the situation and putting some ideas on the table.  In the U.S. there are now more than 100 million working age people who are no longer in the workforce.  That is more people than are in the workforce yet as far as society goes it is as if we don't even exist - politicians seldom talk about the issue.    Something should be done - most big American corporations have shown that they are driven by little else other than greed and selfishness and they don't care a bit about the society that nurtured them.

It is a perfect summer evening.  I just went outside for a moment to get away from my computer.   The temperature is shirt sleeve perfect - cool but comfortable.   The moon is a little sliver in the western sky - a planet - Venus I presume, shines brightly just below it.   For an urban area it is quite mostly  - from several blocks away you can hear the roar of the ocean and the crickets are chirping in mass, but it is quiet.   There are airplanes over head and in the distance and you can hear them too - but the are at a high altitude so they are quite.   A neighbor across the street is watching TV and his door is open so you can hear it - but it is not too loud either.   It is also dark.  My neighborhood  has no street lights, but there is enough lite from porch lights that it is not all that dark - it is just easy on the eyes.   I think I will go back out there.   It is a perfect summerevening.  ... more »

What is your Ikegai?   I decided to turn off the NPR today, and am listening to some TED talks instead.  I am way late to the game with TED - though of course I have listened to some, it is not a habit.  This is the second one I listened to today - about how to live longer.  It is not what I expected.  The main thing I got out of it was an expression they use on Okinawa called "Ikegai".  Roughly translated, it means "your reason for getting up in the morning.  You know, I am not all that sure I have one, which may be the source of many of my problems.  Probably something I should work on.   What is your Ikegai?
