The Keith Albee Theater Organ

Huntington News Net has published a nice little story about the Keith Albee Theater Organ, in Huntington, WV. I also contributed a couple of the images to the article, featuring my most prolific model, Selina K, standing inside one of the organ’s large pipe chambers. 

Pipe organs are the only musical instrument I can think of, which can be so large that you can actually walk around inside their inner workings. They often occupy several different rooms, or chambers, of the building they are installed in. The general public normally only sees the organ console where the organist sits to operate the organ. However, hidden behind the walls are often several different rooms filled with a wide variety of pipes, duct work, air chests, and all sorts of esoteric equipment that comprise the actual heart and soul of the instrument.

Mind Control is Coming!

Actually, a primitive form of it is already here, at least for lab rats in a recent experiment. One day, your mind may no longer be your own—if this technology progresses enough. The "dark side" ramifications of this research are numerous. The article doesn't mention if this research is funded by DARPA, but I would be surprised if DARPA wasn't spending money on this very topic. I'm sure other countries and organizations will be researching this as well.

Like with many new technologies, the potential for doing wonderful new things certainly exists, as does the potential for causing extreme harm. Lots of folks would like the ability to telepathically communicate with others when they choose. It would be so much more convenient that lugging around a smart phone. Google recently announced the planned demise of Google Reader, and now some folks are worrying that Google Alerts might become extinct in the future as well. Please, don't kill Google Alerts! Lots of folks love this service, and I'm definitely one of them.

Not only can it help people stay updated on the latest news for particular topics of interest, but I've also used it to discover who in the world is talking about my various websites. It's a very handy insight into the influence and reach my sites have. View World-Wide Cyber Attacks in Real Time!

This German web site is a real eye-opener. The front page has a constantly updated map of known cyber attacks taking place around the globe. It can be quite mesmerizing to watch all the activity play out in real time. I already knew that hacking activity takes place every single day, but this really emphasizes how frequent and wide-spread cyber attacks truly are. It also makes me wonder how many cyber attacks are never caught by this site? I would dare guess that the most dangerous hackers probably go unnoticed by a website like this.

Code Blue

While hiking through a forest in WV, miles from civilization, I found this abandoned pay phone lying in the snow. A victim of theft and vandalism, it's coin box had been smashed and all money removed. I have no idea where it might have came from. The nearest location that might have had a pay phone is miles away. Seeing it in the snow, in the middle of nowhere, was quite surreal.

Thank you, for confirming what photojournalists already knew, but many police departments either didn't understand, or were doing their best to ignore. Thank you, for affirming the rights of photographers to photograph police officers in public spaces. Especially since 9-11, the rights of photographers have been under attack in many areas of the country. Hopefully, that won't be the case in the near future.

Did a Big Piece of the Internet go Down?

About the only thing working for me right now, is the Google search engine, and only half of Google Plus. (I can read the text here, but no images are loading.) That, and my personal website seems to be just fine:

I use CloudFlare to protect my site from outages. That might explain why it's still working for me.

I'm suddenly getting tons of DNS errors on almost every site I try to visit. Is anyone else having this issue, or is it likely my ISP having problems?

Some people are just a little too attached to their iPhones. Now, a Japanese company has invented a Ramen noodle bowl that has a built-in dock for your iPhone! That's right, you can stare at your iPhone screen the whole time you're eating, and not miss a single status update or cat picture on your Facebook news feed. For those foodies out there, you can even watch each other eating via video chat!

I think if you're this attached to texting, tweeting, and checking Facebook on your iPhone, it might actually help explain why you're all alone.  :)

It's Snowing!

The climate has changed in my area since I was a kid. We used to get a decent amount of snow every year, but we don't seem to get nearly as much in more recent years. Last year, we only had one half-way decent snow.

I looked out the window this morning, and the grass is totally covered in snow. More is falling, and the high temperature today is supposed to stay below freezing, which means that whatever snow we get today won't melt away today. It should be a great day to go outside and take some snow photos!

This might be our only real snowfall this year, and I want to make the most of the photo opportunities.  :)

Do we Really Need Fireworks Inside a Nightclub?

He created MIDI, and he was also the driving force behind the "Sequential Circuits" company, which produced some of the most famous and well-liked musical synthesizers in history. He's responsible for the Prophet 5, the Prophet 10, the Pro One, and many more.

It's About Time!

Wait, what?!?
While idly browsing the Internet, I came across a post claiming that a coyote can actually run faster than a roadrunner. Considering that this information goes against everything I've been taught by cartoons, I refused to believe it.

But I decided to turn to Google Books and briefly research the topic anyway.

Turns out that the greater roadrunner — also known as geococcyx californianus — can hit top speeds of about 42 km/h (26 mph) while running. (This makes it the fastest-running flying bird.)

Coyotes, on the other hand, typically sustain speeds of 40 to 50 km/h (25 to 30 mph), but they can hit speeds of up to 65 km/h (40 mph) for short bursts.

Beep ... beep?

I'm getting very tired of entering West Virginia into various search engines, and then getting tons of unwanted results for the state of Virginia. Almost every search engine does this. After all these years, is this the best they can do?!

West Virginia is an entirely separate state from Virginia, and it's been that way since 1863. It should be possible to search for things related to the state of West Virginia, without getting flooded with Virginian results.

Timeless Glamour

Elsa is posing on the balcony of the historic Keith Albee Theater, in Huntington WV. She's wearing a vintage 1940's dress, which was graciously loaned to us by the Marshall University theater department for this photo shoot.

The Keith Albee theater was constructed in 1928, at the then astronomical price of $2 million dollars. It was originally a vaudeville theater, then was later converted to a motion picture theater. I recent years, it primarily returned to its roots as a live performance theater, but still occasionally shows motion pictures, such as when it hosts the Appalachian Film Festival.

Between First and Second

These stairs are inside the historic West Virginia Building, located in Huntington WV. Though the building is fifteen stories tall, the only "formal" staircase in the building exists between first and second floor. The rest of the building is served only by elevators and by utilitarian looking stairs meant for use in emergencies.

This is an interior view of the historic Keith Albee theater, taken during the January 2013 inauguration of Huntington mayor Steve Williams. The historic theater was constructed in 1928, and is the crown jewel of downtown Huntington WV.

Huntington WV Art Walk

Mayan Apocalypse?

Google, Facebook, and Tumblr have Outages in Same Week

Three of the largest internet companies in the world have experienced outages in the same week. I also still remember when GoDaddy went down not terribly long ago, taking many companies' hosted sites with them. All of these companies are major industry players, and they should all have excellent gear and personnel. Since the incidents are so close together in time, could there be a common underlying problem here?

I know at least some of these cases involved DNS issues. Could it be that the current DNS system is outdated and needs upgrading?

Could some person or group actually be attacking these major sites, or perhaps the structure of the internet itself?

I'm just curious. Whatever is happening, I hope things go back to being stable for everyone soon.

Facebook is Down — Again!

I've come to expect Facebook to be somewhat buggy, and sometimes the chat system goes down, or timeline posts show up hours late for some folks. At this moment, Facebook is totally down for me. I even tried viewing the site from some proxy servers, to make sure the problem wasn't with my system or my ISP. Nope, Facebook is down, and it's not the first time. I'm so glad I have Google Plus. I just wish more of my friends were here. Maybe after this outage, a few more of them will start using Google Plus? (I hope so.)
