So, Google. Why does it have to be so hard to buy a Nexus device? Are you willing to admit the cluster fuck that is the #Nexus4  launch? And promise us things are going to change?

1. You should have known demand was larger. Seriously.
2. Once stock was out, you should have let us pre-order, then at least we wouldn't all have to bang the gates to get to "order direct" (with a 3 week delay). Unless you truly don't want our money, then please continue while we all go shop for any of the other phones available at the click of a button.
3. Your sites should never, ever, for whatever reason go down. And certainly not for hours. You're Google. It's embarrassing to the whole company.

I'm nearly broke after Christmas, but a few days ago me and a friend got the idea to travel to Egypt to get some warmth and spend the rest of our money. We ordered tickets 4 or 5 days ago and I'm writing this from my hotel. As well as being warm, dirty and lovely, Egypt requires a Visa to get in - but the process was quick and painless: I had to show my passport and write down the flight number (as well as pay a small fee) and had a Visa in a total of 20 minutes. (All done on the flight in, of course.)

If I had to travel as a tourist the other way around, as an Egyptian travelling to Norway, things would be a bit more complicated. Not only does the Norwegian Embassy inform me that I should apply weeks ahead (and they guarantee nothing as to the transaction time), the cost would be doubled to 60 euro and they would have to make a background check to ensure I had at least 50 000 NOK at... more »

Congress is holding hearings on a really bad bill called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) today. If you can call Congress today and ask them not to support SOPA or PROTECT IP, it would take just five minutes but would make a big difference.

If you grew up in a different state or if you can convince your parents to call Congress too, that would really help too. Please reshare wherever you can!

What Eric S. Raymond and Richard Stallman gets wrong on Jobs:

TL;DR: Design is more than repackaging, and the sooner people like Stallman and Raymond stop ridiculing it, the sooner they will be able to fight Apples walled garden.

For those who haven't been able to follow it, these two free software gurus have both essentially said that Jobs left a harmful legacy in the software world, making "walled gardens" seem cool and crushing Freedom. And not to worry, as I've posted earlier I agree that Jobs left a questionable legacy. It's one of the reasons I haven't bought a Mac, even though as a designer I can't help but admire the work on it.

But what Raymond and Stallman doesn't do is explain how or why Apple and Jobs pulled this of and became the most successful company thus far in the 21st century, while the FSF is still waiting for the... more »

Great op-ed on Jobs and the human cost of his rule at Apple:

" [...] If we view him unsparingly, without nostalgia, we would see a great man whose genius in design, showmanship and stewardship of the tech world will not be seen again in our lifetime. We would also see a man who in the end failed to “think different,” in the deepest way, about the human needs of both his users and his workers."

The new Facebook Timeline profile page is actually very good (if somewhat questionable privacy-wise). It's not something I'd want here though.

For me, G+ is for meeting new people and sharing opinions - Facebook is for reminiscing about the past and being social with friends I've already made elsewhere. Both define my identity, to bring in some +Robert Scoble and his "Game of games", but in different ways, and the timeline feature really plays to Facebooks strengths.

Six years ago, Steve and I launched reddit.com in a rented apartment in Medford, MA -- today, it's being setup as an independent company from Conde Nast and I'm thrilled to be on the board of reddit Inc.

We built reddit during the most tumultuous years of my life and never could've imagined how far it'd come. The investment of time and love changed my life the day Condé Nast acquired us, but I never could divest myself. Traffic continued to increase, but surged after I left to volunteer for Kiva in Armenia (correlation or causation, I'll leave to you) and the site -- now one of the top 50 in the US -- needs the independence its fellow online titans enjoy.

reddit has become the engine for creating innovative and influential communities online. I'll do everything I can to help and guide the reddit, Inc. team and our CEO to grow true to the vision we've had... more »

While it's of course hilariously creepy that Gadaffi kept an album of Condoleezza Rice (http://goo.gl/EKXRJ), I found this well-sourced comment from Reddit even more interesting:

"If you read Gaddafis comments on Rice it's obviously played up as part of his anti-racism efforts, aimed at combating racism in Libyan culture. This is partly why the rebels hate him so much, they are thoroughly reactionary particularly on this topic. They frequently create graffiti and political cartoons depicting Gaddafi and his family as black Africans and refer to them using black slurs. For more see the following links:

For those Apple fans who still maintain that Samsung is in the wrong in the current lawsuit: http://m.pocketnow.com/smartphone-news/more-evidence-apple-falsified-images

1. Apple photoshopped images filed in the suit (!) and used other distortion teqniques to make them seem more similar when compared on photo (different viewing angles, etc)
2. Apple opened the app drawer on the Samsung to make it look like the iPad homescreen.
3. Samsung has used that design language for years before the iPad. (Including for a picture frame from 2006 that looks just like the Galaxy, and thus like the iPad)

In short, Apple should get sued back. And hard. First for false accusations and falsifying material, then - since they think the design is so similar - for copying Samsungs design language with the iPad.

Here's the protected design Apple used to block Samsung from selling the Galaxy: http://www.scribd.com/doc/61944044/Community-Design-000181607-0001

If that's not covered by prior art or obviousness, then what is? (Just look at sci-fi, how many such tablets haven't we seen over the ages?) It doesn't even have the iPad button, it's only a screen with rounded corners. Any tablet can be shut down by this.

What's more, and even better, Samsung has stated that "not only did the company never hear about the filing in the first place, but that it also never had the chance to present its side."

Two thought-provoking quotes on the riots in London:

"...here's a sad truth, expressed by a Londoner when asked by a television reporter: Is rioting the correct way to express your discontent? "Yes," said the young man. "You wouldn't be talking to me now if we didn't riot, would you? Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you."

Arrogant, elitist and probably true:

"When you're young, you look at television and think, There's a conspiracy. The networks have conspired to dumb us down. But when you get a little older, you realize that's not true. The networks are in business to give people exactly what they want. That's a far more depressing thought. Conspiracy is optimistic! You can shoot the bastards! We can have a revolution! But the networks are really in business to give people what they want. It's the truth." ( - Steve Jobs)
