A (ultra-geeky) rant :)

One thing that concerns me about where the web is heading today, is that the new generation of web developers have absolutely no idea how the web works.

They are relying on varies code libraries to fix whatever problems they have. Granted, these libraries can sometimes help you do pretty nifty things, but in most cases they just adds a ton of code that nobody needs.

Here is a simple example: I came across a person last night who asked how to get the contents of a DIV tag. Pretty basic stuff. But  people recommended that he should use 'jQuery' and write:

$('#contents').html();

Now, that seems simple, but we have to remember that jQuery itself is 83,495 characters of code, which means that this person now has to add 83,518 characters of code to his page to get the content of a DIV !!!

That's justins... more »

This important stuff. The police state is here. Something needs to be done about it. I truly hope more brave souls blow the whistle on this stuff in the near future.

Whoa, there, maybe this Prism thing is based on misread PowerPoint? A source familiar with government data-gathering techniques says that when companies get surveillance orders, they "implement them just as though they would implement a wiretap -- there's no direct access to servers." Seriously, America? We're now sending 18 year olds to prison for writing bad rap lyrics on Facebook? Gitmo? Keep in mind that no Wall St banker has gone to jail for the financial terrorism they caused.
--------
The media printed:
"(Expletive) a boston bominb wait till u see the (expletive) I do, I’ma be famous"

The actual line is:
"(Expletive) a boston bominb wait till u see the (expletive) I do, I’ma be famous rapping"

"Notice something? The context completely changes the meaning of the line. Suddenly something that sounds like a threat of violence is clearly just bragging about how good Cammy Dee is going to be in the rap game. Last we checked, teenage dreams of grandeur were not a crime."

OK. So Xcode has to be the worst editor for Javascript files in the history of mankind. Wish it was possible to set double-clicking a file in the navigator to automatically launch in an external editor. Right-clicking first is a pain when you have to do it often. Maybe it's time to just use Sublime Text for everything except running my app.

ADHD is not a disorder, it is a difference in cognition.

If you think ADHD is a disease you should think more open minded. Think about skills and creativity...

In most cases creativity comes in chaos, not in orderly sequence;)

How to Learn Anything

"The major barrier to skill acquisition isn't intellectual... it's emotional." An excellent reminder of how easy it can be to learn a new skill. Kaufman says it only takes 20 hours!

Update: I'd like to add a counterpoint to balance Kaufman's message. I love his talk and it feels intuitively true to me, but there's also another side to the story.

Sometimes it's more fun to learn inefficiently! I love leisurely learning, like following tangents or indulging in reading too many books. :) Every field of study has its own culture and community, its own legends and weird trivia and rich backstories. Exploring and immersing yourself in those strange new cultures is half the fun!

So on top of those 20 hours focused on efficiency, I think it's just as important to have at least a few hours of... more »

PHOTOGRAPHERS MUST READ THIS
#EERB   #STOPTEERB
I am appalled and horrified that this has been passed by the U.K. It affect the whole World. People like myself, +Trey Ratcliff & +Thomas Hawk  who HATE watermarks will have to really think hard about adding them now.
I have always ensured that the IPTC is set in my images, but I have noted that it has been stripped when images have appeared elsewhere.. which makes it useless against this
I don't know what we can do to stop this....

Share this & get the word out!
