A few weeks ago, I asked for input on the Canon 6D for landscape photographers. Well, I bought one and used it for two weeks in Death Valley. Summary: I am a fan! If you want to read more, you can check out the link below.

We just got back from a really fun and photographically awesome trip to the Hawaiian Island of Kaua'i. And what was the first photo I processed when we got home? This photo of a misty morning up at Mount Rainier last summer...

After a bunch of gear-related issues on recent trips, I have finally decided I need to buy a back-up camera. I have narrowed it down to the Canon 6D but have found very few comments about the camera from landscape photographers. Any landscape photographers have an opinion on the 6D?  I will probably either get a 6D or another 5D Mark II.  Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Do you think the pressure from social media to post a lot of photos on a continual basis is beneficial, or detrimental to the art of photography?

Ricketts Glen Autumn
After a great week in Vermont, we headed to Acadia National Park in Maine to see if we could catch some fall colors and coastal scenery before I had to fly back to Denver for work. Acadia turned out to be a completely mixed bag – stunningly beautiful and overwhelmingly busy. After a few days of not feeling the touristy/overwhelmed with photographers scene, we headed back to Vermont and all of the beautiful leaves we had left a few days earlier were on the ground, blown off the trees by a storm.

To add a final last little bit of crazy to a trip that started in the Canadian Rockies with a forty mile backpack, we took a gamble on a somewhat overcast forecast and an extra five hours of driving to get to Ricketts Glen in Pennsylvania. It completely paid off with one last perfect day of photographing waterfalls, streams, and fall colors.

White Pocket is a large mass of crazy sandstone in Arizona, difficult to reach because of challenging road conditions. I visited last year for less than 12 hours and it was almost painful to leave because it was such a cool area. That short trip pushed White Pocket to the top of my photography locations list, so +Ron Coscorrosa and I spent some extended time out there a few weeks ago. It was four days of photography bliss and a lot of fun.

Bubbling blue mud pots at the Hverir geothermal area in northern Iceland

Botany Bay Sunrise

Erosion has left tree skeletons along the beach at Botany Bay on Edisto Island in South Carolina. This morning, we were treated to a dramatic and stormy sunrise, with the clouds breaking just as the sun came up.

I just got back from a wonderful trip up to the Pacific Northwest. The wildflowers at Mount Rainier were spectacular this year and it was fun to meet a lot of other photographers along the way.

On our way back to Colorado, we stopped at the Alvord Playa in southeastern Oregon.  This was my second time at this location and it has quickly become one of my favorite places to photograph.  Even though the forecast predicted few clouds, we were treated to an afternoon of wild weather and an evening of incredible, once-a-year sunset light in every direction.

To see the view in the opposite direction, check out +Ron Coscorrosa 's dramatic and beautiful photo from this evening: https://plus.google.com/u/0/109246107083980777171/posts/B19YYJtqs7V

I just returned from spending a few days exploring the Great Sand Dunes, the Bisti Badlands Wilderness, and White Sands National Monument with +Ron Coscorrosa .  We lucked out with really nice conditions at each place we visited, which has derailed my plans to focus on processing photos from my recent Iceland trip.  A good problem to have!

At dusk, the Great Sand Dunes in southern Colorado take on some beautiful pastel hues. Here, I intentionally exaggerated those soft pinks and blues for a more abstract rendition of these pretty and sensual curves.

Reynisdrangar seastacks seen from a secluded beach near Vik, Iceland

Iceland’s black sand beaches are incredibly beautiful, with the contrast of the white waves against the black sand, pebbles, and rocks creating a lot of different opportunities for photography.  We visited this particular area on three separate occasions and were fortunate to have all sorts of interesting conditions.

I have not shared a photo on G+ for a few months, mostly because I have been fortunate to be traveling to all kinds of interesting places.  With no longer trips planned until August, I finally have had a chance to start processing some photos from my recent travels, starting with my trip to Iceland in June.

Of all the places I wanted to visit in Iceland, the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and beach was on the top of my list and it was far more impressive than I expected. The icebergs break off the Vatnajökull glacier, float through the lagoon, flow out into the ocean during low tide, and then wash up onto the beach, eventually breaking up and melting away. We spent a few days watching and photographing this process under all kinds of different conditions - definitely a highlight of the trip.

The Alvord Desert, in a remote section of southeastern Oregon, is one great place to spend a weekend exploring. The expansive playa has all kinds of variety and we were fortunate to find many different patterns and textures (including some water and ice - coming soon!). Although there was little color in the sky on this particular morning, these dark and dramatic clouds were great to photograph.

Abandoned

This weekend I went out to the plains of Colorado with intent to find abandoned homes like this, I found 9 all together along with some other interesting objects. This is still my favorite which I've shot many times before. I did considerable burning and dodging to bring the focus on the house.

Painted Hills, Eastern Oregon

During my trip to the Alvord Desert a few weeks ago, we stopped at the Painted Hills for sunrise along the way. Although colorful clouds never appeared that morning, we were treated to some wonderfully textured clouds that created perfect conditions for black and white wide-angle images and details shots of the colorful badlands. Just like most every other place I have visited recently, I am really looking forward to returning and getting to spend a little more time at this beautiful location.

The high alpine lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park develop fascinating ice patterns in winter. Here, ice bubbles and fractures created some interesting patterns on Mills Lake (taken in 2011, so this is not representative of conditions for this year!).

Twilight at the Racetrack, Death Valley National Park

Death Valley is my favorite place to photograph and I am thrilled to be heading there for my first trip of 2012 at the end of January. This image is from my most recent trip to the park in November of last year (an unplanned but welcome diversion at the time!). This was taken well after the sun had set, with the blue tones of twilight reflected in the playa. For me, these blue tones help capture the feelings of solitude and loneliness that are almost overwhelming when visiting many places throughout Death Valley National Park.

Thank you for taking a look and for any comments.

#2011Top11 Final Final List

The wait is finally over! The list has been narrowed down. The word is out!
First, let me thank all of those who took the time to narrow down their images and submit their entries. I know how hard that is! So, again, thank you so much.
Second, what an amazing crop of talent here on G+. I had a wonderful time going through so many fantastic albums. It was truly delightful.
Third, given the quality of entries, this was a very very difficult exercise. If your selection didn't make it, please know that ultimately, I simply had to narrow it down, so not everyone could make it. I tried to choose albums from different styles and different types of images to cover as broad a range as possible. I would love to hear your thoughts!

Now on to the list. You can find it with the names and links to all the albums here on my blog as promised:... more »

+Younes Bounhar is collecting links for photographers’ #2011top11 photos from this year. This album is my contribution.

This is the first year I have had enough images that I like to participate in this sort of thing, so I am happy to be able to share some images this time around. I do not necessarily consider these my “best” images of 2011 and many of my most popular from this year did not make the cut, but these are certainly my personal favorites of the images I have processed so far.

I had a really wonderful year for photography and am quite grateful for all of the incredible places I visited, new friends I met along the way, and the many memorable experiences that have enriched my life in some really unexpected ways. So, cheers to 2011!

During my time in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta Canada I visited Moraine Lake on a number of occasions. I continually went back there not only to capture it under varying conditions but simply because the place is AMAZING. Each and every time I made it up there I would sit and stare in awe. It is hard not to.

Prior to my latest visit of this location I had captured it under your typical sunny summer conditions and on other occasions completely or partially frozen over but I still wasn’t satisfied. I wanted it snow covered with the lake in its liquid state.

On this particular occasion I was driving back to where I was living in Canmore, Alberta, Canada from Olympic National Park in Washington U.S.A. It was a long day of driving and after just having spent almost 2 months living out of my van/tent on the road I was ready to get home to Canmore.

Anyway, I was just one hourf... more »
