Iris 'Bubble Gum Ballerina'
A Louisiana Iris hybridized by Haymon and introduced in 1990
Louisiana Iris grow a little different from Bearded Iris. They are generally taller plants with fully underground rhizomes. They prefer more water during the growing season but don't require it. They can grow in standing water. Finally, they start blooming just as the Tall Beardeds are finishing up their season.
Photographed at White Rock Gardens, Benton, Arkansas, a private iris and daylily display garden.

Iris 'Drama Queen'
Hybridizer: Keppel
Year of Introduction: 2003
Dykes Medal Winner for 2011
Tall Bearded Iris season is in full swing here in central Arkansas. We've had cool temperatures through May - normally the irises are winding down right now. Rain about once a week is doing a little damage to the flowers, but it is also helping build strong rhizomes for next year.

Narcissus tazetta v. orientalis 'Double Roman'
These daffodils are supposed to be early bloomers. Hm. They were among the last to bloom for us this year. They came from a bag of mixed daffodils planted two years ago.
This shot is from a month ago. Daffodils are quite done here in central Arkansas right now.

We got this Blue-eyed Grass last year at a local garden center later in the season, out of bloom. So far this spring it's been a real stunner. The flowers need a good warm and/or bright day to open fully.

Lonicera sempervirens
Species from eastern North America
Common name: Trumpet Honeysuckle, Coral honeysuckle
North America's most famous native honeysuckle. The original native range of this species is unclear as it has escaped cultivation regularly. It is still the preferred honeysuckle for gardens as it is not as aggressive as Japanese honeysuckle and will not strangle shrubs and trees.

Trillium recurvatum
This cute trillium species has a strange common name - Bloody Butcher.
It is the only trillium with recurved, or downswept, sepals. See those narrow green things below the brick-red petals? In most trilliums the sepals point up along with the petals.
T. recurvatum is found mostly along states bordering the middle stretch of the Mississippi river, with the greatest occurrence in Illinois and Indiana, followed by Arkansas and Tennessee. A few scattered populations in eastern Iowa and Missouri, western Kentucky and north-central Mississippi, and outlier populations in Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Oklahoma.
Here in Arkansas I find this species growing in sandy floodplains, always close to water.

Common name: Spider Lily, Hurricane Lily, Surprise Lily
A real surprise growing in a patch in our back yard. I'd noticed something growing over in that corner and assumed they were old daffodils that had become too shaded to bloom, so I didn't really pay much attention to them. Snow Cathedral
Starting late on Christmas Day 2012 and going through the night, central Arkansas and Little Rock received 11 inches of snow.
It was cold enough the next few days that the snow did not rapidly melt.
With no power at home and the city shut down - we barely have snowplows and they don't get a lot of use - I took a long walk through Boyle Park enjoying the winter wonderland.

Heirloom Daffodils of the Deep South
I'm learning all about heirloom daffodils from the Deep South.
There are three - Narcissus pseudonarcissus, Narcissus jonquilla, and their natural hybrid Narcissus x odorus 'Campernelle'.
Our backyard has a smattering of daffodils from gardeners gone by, with Campernelle being the most common.
Last year none of them bloomed, but this year two plants did. I'm going to water all of them well and let their foliage die back naturally and then move them all into one spot.

Mixed Spring Tulips
The dutch hybrid tulips perform as annuals in the Deep South. Our winters are too warm and our summers are too hot.
They make great container plants. We have two attractive glazed blue terra-cotta pots filled with mixed tulips. These started coming up in late January and the first ones opened this past week.
Sunday morning was spent inside listening to a spring rainshower. Once it was finished I grabbed the camera as I really liked the light and the water droplets on the tulips.
