The Kirkstile Inn
Stopped here after a hike in the Lakes Region on my Birthday trip to the UK a couple of years back. Great beer and one of the best Steak Pies I have had anywhere. Have to go back there some day.....

One of my favorite parts of #IO13....
Huga Barra on stage ... everyone clapping and cheering after he finishes each sentence... the guy could have farted and everyone would be clapping .... then the big finale ....
"The Galaxy S4 will be on sale in the Google Play store for a Price of $649 " - awkward silence follows. Audience sitting there looking at each other - "this sux" ... "do we clap?" ....

Google Image Search - Drag to desktop
I just figured out that I can just drag an image from Google Image Search (in Chrome) right to my desktop. No need to right click and download.
How behind the times am I?

IN YOUR FACE
With the old G+, if I were browsing the stream with someone shoulder surfing and an image popped in that might be a little NSFW or in other ways obnoxious, a quick flick of the mouse wheel and it was gone.
Now with the new interface and a 27" high resolution monitor, there is just no missin' the ugly!

Does anyone out there actually PAY for the news?
A number of Newspapers around the world are trying to make money this way. With all the free news out there, do they provide enough value to get people to pay?

Spanish Food
One thing that kinda irks me here in the United States is how people refer to things that are south of the border as "Spanish". Last I checked - Spain is on an entirely different continent. Having had the opportunity to travel to Spain (I particularly love Barcelona), I miss the music (hint - it's NOT Salsa) and the people, the history, but more than that - the FOOD!
I just love how SPANISH food is so fresh and simple and yet so tasty! I like South American and Mexican food as well, but it is not Spanish.

PSA - Allergy relief
I've been informed that a good quality local beer is the best allergy prevention money can buy. But it MUST be locally brewed, with local ingredients.
Last year when I handed out this advice on G+, some smug, smart-Alecky, ding-wad showed up and tried to convince me that I was wrong and it was honey. Yeah right! - blocked his ass!

Bostonians drink the most beer in the U.S.
Per-capita that is. And I honestly thought Aussies were the only ones that used that "per-capita" trick!!! Well played Boston, well played. At least the Aussies still have the .... most in the Southern Hemisphere trick.....

The Hobyahs
I remember telling my kids this story from my childhood. They were mesmerized, since nobody had told them such a gruesome, scary story at bedtime before ....
Some stories are like family recipes - a little bit gets added or taken away over time. I found this version that is close to the one I remember. I often think of this when I get angry with my dogs barking late at night...
Once there was an old man and woman and a little girl, and they all lived in a house made of hempstalks. Now the old man had a little dog named Turpie; and one night the Hobyahs came and said, "Hobyah! Hobyah! Hobyah! Tear down the hempstalks, eat up the old man and woman, and carry off the little girl!" But little dog Turpie barked so that the Hobyahs ran off; and the old man said, "Little dog Turpie barks so that I cannot sleep nor slumber, and if I live till... more »

Chinese Broccoli has become one of my favorite vegetables. We have a Vietnamese/Thai restaurant nearby that serves authentic (not Americanized) Thai food. There is a simple dish with Chinese Broccoli, Crispy Pork and Oyster Sauce that is absolutely great!

Why are there seemingly intelligent theists?
I am an Atheist because so much of what Religion says and it's followers believe is just nonsense and out of date information that has been debunked by data/fact. Yet I still encounter some very intelligent Religious people for whom I have a lot of respect despite their glaring flaw.
How can this be? Intelligence = Reason != Religion.

oooh Big News!
Our company is moving to a new expense reporting system ... "The new system will have enhanced capabilities for travelers such as: scanning and attaching receipts versus mailing, and a mobile app to prepare, submit and approve expense reports from iPhone/iPad/Android/BlackBerry."
This might be the first time I have seen our company acknowledge the existence of Android!!!! That's progress.....

So I am adding it to the Rubin Dhillon banned words list to make sure it does not end up in my own writing.

9 Year Old Indian Boy Drives Ferrari
Doing a pretty good job too! But he got his dad arrested.....
NEW DELHI -- Police in India have arrested a man who allowed his 9-year-old son to drive his Ferrari.
Mohammed Nisham was arrested on charges of endangering the life of a child and allowing a minor to drive, said Inspector Biju Kumar. He was released after posting bail of 5,000 rupees ($92), Kumar said.
Nisham's wife filmed the boy driving the sports car on his 9th birthday two weeks ago with his 5-year-old brother in the passenger seat. The video was widely watched on YouTube and created an outrage across India, causing police to file charges.
India's economic boom has created a class of super-rich, whose excesses are frequently in the news.
Police Inspector M.V. Verghese said the boy's father, who has a thriving tobacco and... more »

How is your takeout delivered?
The famous Dabbawala or Tiffin Wallahs translates as one who carries the box. Tiffin is an old English word for a light lunch, and also the name of the multi-compartment metal lunch box that carries it. The Tiffin Wallah originated over a century ago when the many Indians working for British companies disliked the food served at work. Tiffin service was created to bring home cooking to the workplace. Today the city's 5,000 tiffin-wallahs deliver 200,000 tiffin-boxes filled with home-cooked food each day.
According to a recent survey, there is only one mistake in every 16,000,000 deliveries and the system has registered a performance rating of 99.999999."
I bet you get your takeout in a plastic container that ends up in the trash (maybe some will be recycled) and can you say that you get a 99.999999 accuracy performance ... more »

Okay fellow Googlers, I have a very important question that +Google can't seem to answer me about itself.
tl;dr: Google Image Search is playing music when relevant images are uploaded
I found this image on 4Chan and reverse image searched it (there's a button on 4Chan to bring you to the image search page with the relevant image already uploaded and searched) to find out what it is. I'm now aware that it is a visual representation of +The Cure's song "Friday I'm in Love", however this is not relevant to my question, only the example.
I am on the +Samsung USA +Chromebook (not sure if that is relevant) and when you upload this image to Google image search, either normally or though the 4Chan button, it starts playing the song "Friday I'm in Love" while you're on the search results page. I had this happen first a week ago and cou... more »

How do you make a sandwich?
I remember when I first met my wife and I made her a sandwich, she was shocked and sort of grossed out that I had used butter and not mayonnaise as the spread. Of all the cultural differences I encountered when I moved the the U.S., this was the most surprising. Where I came from - bread and butter ALWAYS went together, whether it was a ham sandwich, tuna fish, chicken, a simple cheese sandwich or just ... bread and butter. I have mostly adopted the mayonnaise thing for all my sandwiches now. Except for some - mayonnaise would completely destroy the classic cucumber and cheese sandwich I just had for lunch (for example).
Oh and the other surprise - how a bag of potato chips was standard fare along side sandwiches. Can't have a sammich without a bag of chips. I suspect with Subway now the largest fast-food franchise in the world, all this must be... more »

You have to ask yourself - what horrible crime did Romaldo Giurgola commit in New York?
For he was doomed to leave the "city that never sleeps" for the most boring place on the face of the earth - the capital of Australia, Canberra - the city that never wakes up. Fair punishment, I say for designing Parliament House.
