The Post-Apocalyptic Google Reader World

So! I asked where Google Reader fans were going to migrate to after its untimely demise. There seem to be four main camps. I'm also going to be publishing this publicly, so don't be alarmed if you see it elsewhere.

1.) Sadness.

It'll be OK. At least there's new Daft Punk and Arrested Development this month.

2.) Once Bitten, Twice Marked All As Read

Some folks are going back to a desktop RSS reader, like lovers once spurned who need to learn to trust again. Vienna and NetNewsWire are the most popular options here. I personally use Vienna as my secondary reader to check my own feed. It's very free and very good.

3.) Fuck It, We'll Do It LIVE

Another interesting minority are the people who are opting to run... more »

I think my favorite part of the Nexus 7 is the ability to have multiple users on a machine. I know I'm not a special snowflake for having a couple of different Gmail profiles. I wish the ipad did that.

Yet another of my insane Kickstarter rewards in progress: A nice man named James pledged to get this shirt made. It's *metallic.*

Tonight's comic just found out about Google Reader and is currently being shared via Google+ which is quite meta and complainy, if you think about it. It's also available via standard RSS. ( http://www.dieselsweeties.com/feeds/ )

Looks like Baby Andy is the breakout superstar of 2013, if reactions to a single panel in last night's comic are to be believed.

If you've never read my comics or have fallen out of the habit, today's strip + the next one will catch you up completely. Pass it on!

I somehow managed to not sweat the iPhone 5 all weekend. This is a personal best for me. Kinda got my fingers crossed there will be a 7" iPad with data plans available, because I have big pockets and fuck telephones.

(A 4G Nexus 7 sounds like it might have worked too, but I don't have a ton of experience with Android and it'd be a bit of a leap of faith.)

Diesel Sweeties is doing this awesome Kickstarter project for DRM-free e-books. If he hits $35,000, he is going to drive cross country to give Wil Wheaton a Pac-Man arcade machine. I think Wil should have Pac-Man. XD

So, I'm doing a Kickstarter to make those DRM-free ebooks I was talking about a reality. It's been kind of ridiculous and extremely fun. I hope to keep adding to it.

BUT I am here, amongst the more technical crowd to ask a more technical question. I'm afraid that working on so many comics in a 3-4 month period will re-wreck my mouse arm like what happened when I was doing syndicated strips. I like to solve with technology before medicine and would love to know if anyone has used a Dell multitouch monitor with a Mac running Lion?

I used a combination mouse/trackpad/Cintiq two-handed technique at the computer, but feel like using my fingers on the monitor in Photoshop would be a real boon. (I mouse right and draw left, using a pen for mousy tasks screws me up.)

tl;dr: Webcomics as iBooks files look very promising. Readers are excited about the idea, I want to produce more work this way if I can afford it.

**

It's been a few days since I put my iBooks comic experiment up and it's been a lot more popular than expected. I'm honestly not sure how many times it's been downloaded. My own server is reporting almost 8,000 downloads but that doesn't take into account the first burst which I had hosted on my Dropbox. (It was enough to get the public folder shut off... not sure I was supposed to use it that way. Sorry, Dropbox!)

I think it would be safe to say at least 10,000 people grabbed the file. Not bad for a file created by software which has only been out for a week on a single platform!

The responses so far have been overwhelmingly positive. Since getting covered by a lot of... more »

So apparently you can change the file extension on an iBook from .ibooks to .zip, then browse inside of it and swap the image files for more efficiently compressed ones. In case you were wondering how insane I am.
