What would it look like if Earth had rings like Saturn?

Funnily enough, our planet did once have rings. Going by current theories millions of years ago a planet-sized body called Theia collided with Earth. A huge amount of material from Earth was blown up into orbit by the impact, where it formed a ring. Because this material was orbiting outside of earth's Roche limit, it eventually coalesced into the Moon.

These illustrations by Ron Miller show what our skies would look like if we had rings that were the same proportional size and position as Saturn's.

Are Americans flunking science?
A new national survey commissioned by the California Academy of Sciences reveals that the U.S. public is unable to pass even a basic scientific literacy test.

Over the past few months, the American government has allocated hundreds of billions of dollars for economic bailout plans. While this spending may provide a short-term solution to the country's economic woes, most analysts agree that the long-term solution must include a transition to a more knowledge-based economy, including a focus on science, which is now widely recognized as a major driver of innovation and industry. Despite its importance to economic growth, environmental protection, and global health and energy issues, scientific literacy is currently low among American adults.

According to the national survey commissioned by the California Academy of Sciences:

Love this Doctor!

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Heart only good for so many beats, and that it... Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually.
Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: Oh no. Wine made from fruit. Brandy distilled wine, that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made of grain. Bottom up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one.. If you have two body, your ratio two to one.

Q: What are some of the... more »

Why don't you just summarize the article you're sharing on social media?
Why keep promoting the fake mystery of online content?

I keep seeing the following ongoing trend on social media (and I might have been guilty of the same on numerous occasions):

People share articles with linkbait headlines and they do nothing or too little to add to informational value of their own share.

For example, a person shares an article with the following (fictional) headline:

Earn extra $10,000 per month by changing these 2 simple things in your business

The sharer adds nothing to his/her share, or adds a comment which goes something like this:

I've tried these two things last month and they really worked, highly recommended!

We've all done this, but now I see the mistake in our behavior. The online mediah... more »

"Time-lapse videos on the internet are pretty much a dime a dozen these days. But this new one stood out for us.
It was put together by director/actor/video editor +Luc Bergeron - aka Zapatou - who compiled 179 different time-lapse videos from around the world into one.
Bergeron, who lives in Montreal, calls this video 'Welcome To Earth' and it's spectacular."

Cosign. If I owned a bar I would have this sign up outside it too.

Can the oceans clean themselves? 19-year-old Boyan Slat thinks so – with a little help from humans, of course: http://ow.ly/l5nFe.

Find out more about his ambitious and creative project to get rid of plastic in major ocean gyres at http://ow.ly/l5nLW. And get involved if you are a physical oceanographer, a hydrodynamic/fluid dynamics modeller, or a maritime structure engineer!

With the help of massive amounts of computer muscle, Google has scrubbed away cloud cover, filled in missing pixels, digitally stitched puzzle-piece pictures together, until the growing, thriving, sometimes dying planet is revealed in all its dynamic churn. The images are striking not just because of their vast sweep of geography and time but also because of their staggering detail. Consider: a standard TV image uses about one-third of a million pixels per frame, while a high-definition image uses 2 million. The Landsat images, by contrast, weigh in at 1.8 trillion pixels per frame, the equivalent of 900,000 high-def TVs assembled into a single mosaic.

Call for action of Europeans: where are you? Comment and you will be circled
the latest figures of stats service Comscore show a sharp rise in the number of European users of G+ which sounds good
In November I posted about the limited number of Europeans on G+ and I included some figures to show it. This weekend new figures came in which are probably much more reliable and most importantly more recent. In the attached graph you can see that the US still dominates G+ but Europe would be strong if the numbers were combined.

My post of two months ago, based on the profiles suggested otherwise. I warned at that time that my figures were based on the profiles people filled in and an overwhelming majority never specifies their country. You can read it here: https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/4ADw2NVV7WG
At that time I said Europe which is almost twice as large as... more »

Vote for a slogan!

We are looking for a clever or better the best wordplay where you explain what Twitter is, what Facebook is and what Google+ is.
It's that simple.

In my opinion, it shows the difference between being always connected, and use the Internet. Like every thing in life, it's simply necessary to find an equilibrium.

Les taronges a Europa (i rodalia)
Oranges in Europe (and surroundings)

An interesting map with the oranges names.

- Color carbassa: del sànscrit नारङ्ग nāraṅga (taronger) possiblement d'origen draviídic, a través del persa  نارنگ (nārang) i l'àrab نارنج (nāranj).
- Orange colour: from the Sanskrit word for "orange tree" (नारङ्ग nāraṅga), probably of Dravidian origin, through Persian نارنگ (nārang) and Arabic  نارنج (nāranj).
- Carbassa fosc: variaciò de l'anterior, de l'antic francès pomme d'orenge, poma de taronja (sic).
- Dark orange: variation from the previous one, from old French pomme d'orenge, orange's apple (sic).
- Green: they were intr... more »

Undeclared martial law, dancing to terrorists' tune, ... and we applauded
I think I'm one of the few people disturbed and unhappy by how the manhunt was run in Boston and by how few people even questioned if any of this was legal.  Or what precedent we just set.

The media, who should have been loudest in questioning these actions, used the polite term "lockdown" to describe what was an undeclared martial law.  When you shut down all transportation, close businesses, tell citizens they must remain inside their homes, and bring in the armored vehicles - that's martial law.  When you search people's bags and demand their ID because they are walking on the street - that's martial law.  When you "ask" people for "consent" to search their homes by sticking your foot in the door and using intimidation and fear - that's martiallaw.  T... more »
