What Lies Ahead

I'm not one to title my work, prefering the viewer to interpret the image for themselves, but I couldn't help myself with this one.

Taken on the tiny Maldivian island of Gouridhoo, population bugger all, I captured this young girl, in head-dress, walking round the corner towards her home. Or is it her future?

What lies ahead for this girl is to (possibly) dress like the woman lurking in the shadows. I quite like the way the girl is in bright light, free, young and innocent as all children are, and about to turn a corner into darkness, where her future awaits: perhaps being made to dress like her waiting mother, hidden in the shadows, covered by her dark clothes, unnoticed.

I'm not making a statement on whether this is right or not, but this is how I see this photo. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

I wasn't aware that my visiting friend Mark was doing a running commentary of me street shooting until half way through. It's hardly the best footage of me at work, but it's a bit of fun and for anyone not familiar with this style of photography, it's a little insight into stroboscopic street shooting. We've just dropped anchor in Uligamu, after a fractious four-day crossing from Cochin, India. Fire extinguishers went off, alternators weren't charging, engines weren't starting, watermaker has just blown. All these worries go out the window with a wander along the desolate beach of the Maldive's most northern (but one) island. My first album upload in a very long time!

Finalist in the Wanderlust Photographer of the Year

I've been so busy getting the boat ready my photography news has taken a back seat recently. One thing that happened last week was the Wanderlust Photographer of the Year Awards where I was one of the finalists.

The latest issue of Wanderlust travel magazine contains all the shortlisted finalist entries, so if you get a chance to grab a copy, do let me know what it looks like because I'd love to see it in print!

Although I didn't win, it's nice to know my work was whittled down to the last 10 out of over 8,000 entries. The winner of the landscape category in which I was a finalist, sadly died before he discovered he'd won. Probably later today I'll be publishing a little account of the techno festival they had on Bolgatty Island here in Cochin (Kerala, India). I was mainly shooting off-camera flash but with a cable, so the flash was TTL and not manual as I normally do. Looking for Royal Photographic Society Moderators

Next year set sail and will be spending much of my time at sea, all things being well! This means I will be offline for quite a bit of 2013 so I am looking for moderators of the Royal Photographic Society G+ page.

The mods just need to update the page every now and then with RPS news and events, and to circle new followers. The mods should be members of the RPS.
