I was nominated by +Richard Nelridge  to take up the #challengenaturephoto and publish a different nature photo for the next 7 days. I usually select my favorite images of the year at about this time so I thought this was a good opportunity to pick my favorite nature photos of 2015. My first trip this year was with my good friend +Gary Hamburgh  to Yellowstone in February. We were disappointed because there was not much snow at lower elevations, but once we got to the interior of the park there was more than enough snow for some great photography. This is Lower Yellowstone Falls which is perhaps the most iconic location in all of Yellowstone. It was such a beautiful sight to see the canyon walls cloaked in snow!

Whenever I am out shooting, I try to make both horizontal and vertical compositions of the same subject. Of course this does not always work because some subjects really look better either horizontally or vertically. But there are many times when it is possible to find a pleasing composition both horizontally and vertically. This is a vertical composition of the Scrips Pier in La Jolla. The horizontal version of this image has been one of my best selling prints, but I quite like this vertical version as well.

I am a big fan of bamboo. This is a grove of bamboo I found at Koraku-en Garden in Okayama, Japan. Japanese gardeners are among the best in the world and the gardens in Japan are always so well looked after and this garden was no exception. There is something peaceful about looking at a bamboo grove and I also liked the autumn color of maples leaves on the left.

Kasuaga Shrine in Nara has more lanterns than I have seen in any other Japanese shrine. In fact this style of bronze lantern is called "kasuga lantern" in Japanese. They are a favorite of mine and we have 2 displayed in our living room that we purchased in antique stores in Kyoto.

Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima is unique in Japan because it is built on stilts in a shallow inlet of the Inland Sea. This unique architecture makes it look like the shrine is floating on top of the water when the tide is high. I like this image because you can see the shrine and the torii gate "floating" above the sea. I also like the beautiful sunrise sky in the background.

When I was in Kyoto last November, I got up early to go to Kibune Shrine. Many Shinto Shrines perform a service for the gods early in the morning and I arrived in time to see this one. You can see the Shinto priest performing this ceremony in the above photo.

When I visited Kyoto last November I went down to Nara one day. Nara was the capital of the Japan before Kyoto so there are many historical places to see. This is Kasuga Shrine which is one of Nara's most famous landmarks. Kasuga Shrine is known for its lanterns which you can see in this image. I like the leading lines of this image and the profusion of lanterns hanging from the outside of these buildings.

When Japanese visit a Shinto Shrine, they often write a prayer on a prayer plaque and then leave it on a rack in front of the shrine. I like the design of these prayer plaques which I found at Kibune Shrine in Kyoto. The images of horses and dragons represent the Chinese zodiac signs which are associated with specific years. It is also interesting to read the individual prayers. The one in the very middle says "Lord help me make a wonderful family."

When I visited Kyoto in November last year, I walked up to Kiyomizudera to see the sunset. This was peak season for the autumn leaves so Kyoto was crowded everywhere I went, but I still could not believe how crowded it was. They even had volunteers in the streets to make sure the pedestrians stayed on the right side of the street. The people lined up below are waiting for a special entrance to the temple to see the illumination at night. It makes me feel lucky that I do not have to cope with crowds like this all the time.

I was pleased that the Woodmark Hotel's interior designer chose both some very new and very old images. This is one of my newest images which I shot on a trip to Colorado last September. I like the red and yellow colors of this image and the water drops almost look like little jewels.

When the interior designer of the Woodmark Hotel first approached me, she asked me to send her images that are primarily red or blue. Of the images purchased, most of them are either a combination of red and green or blue and yellow. These two color combinations are opposites on the color wheel and go together very well. This image is a good example. The red leaf appears so vibrant because it is sitting on top of bight green moss. When I composed this image, I think I was drawn to this color combination subconsciously. In the future, I plan to look for these color combinations every opportunity I get.

It can sometimes be interesting to look directly down. This image is looking directly down on Indian Paintbrush flowers. I also used a very shallow depth of field which makes the background an out of focus blur. The Woodmark Hotel interior designer choose this image because she liked the color combination of red and green. I also like this color combination and the abstract star design of the two flowers.

An unusual perspective can be effective in creating an abstract composition. Most people do not look directly up because it is not so easy. But when I am photographing I try to look at a scene from many different perspectives. I made this image last year when I was visiting Colorado. The yellow aspen leaves make a great contrast with the deep blue sky and looking directly up makes the composition look abstract. I was happy that the interior designer for the Woodmark Hotel chose some of my newest images as well as some very old ones.

This is another image purchased for display at the Woodmark Hotel in Kirkland, WA. These are out of focus Christmas lights which I shot in Tokyo in 2003. I like the abstract design of this composition and the blue and green color against a black background. The interior designer was looking for a blue abstract image and this seemed to fit the bill.

This is another image purchased for display at the Woodmark Hotel in Kirkland, WA. For this image I used a telephoto lens to zoom in on the autumn color in the Cascade Mountains. Zooming in on a small part of the landscape can be an effective way to create an abstract image. The bright red foliage in this image is huckleberry which is quite common in Pacific Northwest mountains. The interior designer who chose this image mentioned that she liked the combination of red and green in this composition.

This is another image purchased for display at the Woodmark Hotel. Whenever I am traveling, I like to visit botanical gardens. The plants there are very well taken care off and usually do not have the blemishes one often finds on wild plants. This is a succulent called Kalanchoe which I found at a botanical garden in Baja California. I like the pattern of the leaves as well as the combination of red and green. Red and green are opposites on the color wheel so they tend to go well together. The interior designer for the Wookmark also mentioned that she likes this color combination.

This is another image purchased for display at the Woodmark Hotel in Kirkland,WA. I took shot this photo from a small footbridge which crosses the Ohanapecosh River in Mt. Rainier NP. The flowing water and the sun shining on the river created this abstract effect. Many people have told me that it looks light shining on a gemstone. I like to make abstract images that make the viewer ponder what they are looking at.

This is another image purchased by the Woodmark Hotel. I tend to do most of my photography when I am traveling. Traveling is stimulating and when I am away from home it is easier to concentrate on photography. But this image is proof that one does not have to travel to exotic locals to make interesting images. These are some autumn leaves I found in our front yard and arranged into a combination of red and yellow. I used a macro lens to shoot very closeup which created an abstract image more about color and shapes than the leaves themselves.

When an interior designer first approached me about providing artwork for the Woodmark Hotel, she told me that she liked my abstract images and wanted to see more similar work. So I searched through my archives and sent her more than 250 abstract images, some of which were recent and some that were quite old. The images she chose include both very recent images and also some very old ones. This is an image I shot in 2003 when I was still living in Tokyo. This shot is a zoom blur of out of focus Christmas lights. I like the colors and the sense of motion created by the zoom blur. I think it was chosen because it is so abstract that it could have been shot anywhere.

I met with the interior designer of the Woodmark Hotel in Kirkland, WA yesterday and she ordered 12 - 16 X 24 framed prints. All of the prints they chose are abstracts, but the subject matter is various. This hotel is situated on the shore of Lake Washington with a marina in front of it, so it was very appropriate for them to choose the above image, "Marina Reflections". Installation will be next month in public hallways. There may also be a chance for them to purchase more prints when some of their guest rooms are renovated. It was such a great way to start off the year!

When I visited Kyoto on my trip to Japan last November I joined a tour of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Kyoto was Japan's capital from the 8th century up to the 19th century when the emperor's court moved to Tokyo. The Kyoto Imperial Palace was the residence of the emperor when he lived in Kyoto and this is the Hall of State Ceremonies where the emperor held court. It was a truly impressive building, but rather understated reflecting Japanese aesthetics. Looking through this gate it is easy to imagine what court life was like more than 1000 years ago.

I like to make abstract photographs. I think they are interesting because at first glance you cannot see what the subject matter is and then you start to think about what it might be. Also the more abstract an image the more it relies on the pattern and texture to make it pleasing to the eye. This is a closeup of a tree trunk I found in Okayama, Japan last year. I like the patterns and texture in this photo and it will be a new addition to the many tree trunk images I have taken all over the world.

Guanajuato is one of my favorite cities in Mexico. This is a view looking down on the city at sunset. During colonial times, Guanjuato was one of Mexico's most prosperous cities because there are many silver mines nearby. At one time more than 70% of the world's silver was mined near here. It is also known as the birthplace of Mexico's independence movement and today it is famous for its well regarded university.

This is the Toyokuni Shrine Pagoda, one of Miyajima's famous landmarks. It was built in the 15th century to commemorate Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a medieval war lord who unified Japan. I like the leading lines of the wall and path that draw your eye towards the pagoda and the Inland Sea in the background. I was lucky to have such nice weather that morning.

Itsukushima Shrine is one of the most important Shinto Shrines in Japan. It was originally founded in the 6th century. The buildings were destroyed and rebuilt many times, but the current structure dates from the 16th century. I like to take architectural shots and one technique I like to use is symmetry. Buildings tend to be symmetrical so composing an architectural image to be perfectly symmetrical can be very powerful. This is a shot of the most sacred part of the shrine where many ceremonies are performed. The wooden structure in the foreground is a donation box where visitors toss in coins as offerings to the gods.

I visited Miyajima on my trip to Japan last November. This is Miyajima's most iconic landmark, the Floating Torii Gate. Of course it is not really floating. It is built in a very shallow bay so it looks like it is floating in the Inland Sea at high tide. Miyajima has been considered sacred ground by the Japanese since at least the 6th century and the Floating Torii Gate dates back to the 12th century. Since it is made out of wood, it eventually rots away and has been reconstructed many times. The gate standing today is the 8th one built since the 12th century. After sunset the gate and shrine are illuminated which is a great opportunity for a twilight shot. I like the brilliant orange color against the deep blue twilight background in this image.

This is another image chosen by an interior designer as a finalist for purchase by a local hotel. I am a big fan of tree trunks and have a large collection of these images. If it makes the final cut, it will be the first time sale for this one.

This is another image chosen by an interior designer for display at a local hotel. She wanted a group of abstract images with various subjects. This is an old rusty steel door I found at Fort Warden State Park in Port Townsend, WA. This fort was made redundant by the army after WWII and since then has been left to the elements. I like finding abstract designs in weather beaten objects. I was fascinated by this combination of color and texture.

Recently an interior designer contacted me about a project for a local hotel. She is looking for abstract images to display in the public areas. This image of an alium flower is one finalists she has chosen. The hotel is planning to purchase 12 images as part of their permanent art collection. If it does pan out, it would be nice to have a large collection of my images on display at this local venue.

Merry Christmas Everyone! This is an image from my trip to Yellowstone last winter. It was such a beautiful place in the winter. This was one of our stops on the snow coach tour which ended at Old Faithful Snow Lodge. Most of the roads are closed, but the snow coaches run all through the season. There are so few people at this time of year so it is one of my favorite places to photograph in wintertime.

On my last day in Colorado, it was rainy. It was not pouring, but a soft, gentle rain. I knew the conditions were not good for landscapes so I started looking for closeup shots. There were many water drops on the fallen leaves, but the way they had fallen was not particularly attractive. So I started moving the leaves I liked to a different location. It was very difficult to move the leaves without loosing the water drops and I was not always successful. But I was able to assemble a fairly large number of leaves with the water drops in tact and this image is the result of my efforts. I like the different colors in the image ranging from red to yellow and of course the water drops make it eye-catching.

When I was driving one of the back roads of Gunnison NF, I came across this aspen grove.  The trees in the foreground had already lost most of their leaves so the early morning sun created very dramatic shadows on the road while the trees in the background still had most of their autumn color.  I like this combination of dramatic shadows in the foreground with yellow foliage and blue sky in the background.

In late September we visited Colorado to see the autumn color.  Colorado has the best aspen trees of anywhere I have been and we were lucky to catch the autumn color near its peak.  I found these aspen trees growing just outside the town of Aspen.  I like these very tall trees with very white trunks and the yellow foliage in the background.

After touring Portugal we traveled up to Spain and visited Santiago de Compostela for the first time. Because it is home to St. John's grave, this town became famous as the destination of many pilgrims from all over Europe. Since it was such an important town for the Catholics, they built many monuments. The image below is in a former monastery which is now used as the Museum of the Galician People. I had never seen a triple spiral staircase before and I thought it looked best looking up towards the ceiling. Looking up is often an effective way to create an unusual point of view.

After Porto we spent several days in the Douro Valley.  This area has been growing wine grapes since Roman times and the hillsides have that well tended look which comes from centuries of cultivation.  It is the custom of the Portuguese to grow olive trees mixed between the vineyards which makes for some pleasing compositions.  This shot is a typical scene of the Douro Valley.

In late May we traveled to Portugal for the first time. We started in Lisbon and slowly worked our way up to Porto and the Douro Valley. When we were in Porto I found a great spot to shoot the Douro River at sunset. I like the illuminated buildings of the waterfront against the beautiful sunset sky in this image.

In February we visited Mexico and for the first time Oaxaca which is known for its indigenous culture.  One evening we attended a demonstration of Mexican folk dancing at a local hotel.  I was fascinated by the colorful costumes and energetic dancing so I decided to use motion blur.  For this shot I used a long shutter speed and mounted my camera on a sturdy tripod.  This technique caused the dancers to blur while keeping some parts of the image sharp.  I like the sense of motion and vibrant colors in this image.

For Day 5 of my #challangenaturephotography and #Bestof2015 I choose Kauai Moonset. In March, we visited Kauai for the first time in many years. One morning I got up early and hiked out to Mokolea Point with my friend and photographer, +Brian Hiltz  , in the dark to shoot the dawn light. I was very pleased to find the crescent moon low in the horizon just as the dawn sky was beginning to light up. I like the simplicity of this image with the crescent moon above the ocean and this ancient lava field. Thanks Brian for introducing me to this beautiful spot!

This image is for Day 4 of #challangenaturephotograpy and #Bestof2015. We took a photo tour while we were in Yellowstone on one of their snow coaches. Our guide was familiar with the wildlife and in communication with some other tour leaders. One of the other tour leaders said that they spotted a bobcat near the Madison River and when we got there we found the bobcat stalking a muskrat. I decided to use a pan blur to capture the bobcat as it leaped into the river. This technique kept the bobcat relatively sharp, but blurred the background as the camera moved with the bobcat. I like the sense of motion in this image.

I like to shoot close up shots of details which can produce an abstract feeling. In February was walking along the boardwalk near Old Faithful which has many hot springs and geysers where I found this scene. This image is frozen geothermal runoff from the nearby geothermal features. I like the colors and lines of this composition which I call Earth Tones.

For day 2 my Best of 2015, this is my Winter Forest Abstract image. While I never pass up the opportunity to shoot impressive landscapes, I also like to use different techniques to produce impressionistic images. When we were in Yellowstone in February, we stopped at a forest that had been burned in a forest fire. The burned trunks were very black and stood out against the white snow. So I decided to use intentional camera movement. For this image I used a long shutter speed and moved the camera up while the shutter was open. This produced the abstract feeling of the image above.

Barcelona is well known for its modernista architecture and the master of this style is Antonio Gaudi. Gaudi designed Parc Guell as an upscale housing development at the beginning of the 20th century, but it was never commercially successful. That was lucky for the general public which can now enjoy this wonderful public park looking out over the city of Barcelona. It has become a very poplular destination and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I just love this Gaudi's whimsical style and the mosaic tile work on the terrace is amazing.

When I visited Charleston several years ago I drove down to Edisto Island early in the morning to shoot Boneyard Beach. It was a very high tide due to the full moon and these dead trees were completely submerged in the incoming waves. These trees were originally on dry land, but the ocean currents changes and slowly ate away the coastline. It is a surreal sight to see these dead trees sticking up out of the ocean and the clear dawn sky was so beautiful!

These are the Moeraki boulders off the southeast coast of New Zealand's South Island. I think they look like a herd of turtles heading out to the ocean, but the native Maori people thought they looked like sleeping ducks which is what Moeraki means in the Maori language. Ducks usually sleep with their head tucked under a wing which is what the Maori saw. It was such a beautiful sight as the sun peaked over the distant horizon!

I love to explore gardens to find interesting compositions with my macro lens. This is a euphorbia plant I found growing in a garden on San Juan Island. I like the radiating pattern of the leaves and its beautiful aquamarine color. Mother Nature is such a wonderful artist!

When I am photographing, I always try to make horizontal and vertical images of whatever I am shooting. This is not always possible because some scenes only work in one direction. But often it is possible to find good compositions as both horizontal and vertical images. This image is the vertical version of a horizontal image I posted recently. I think it works a little better as a vertical because the vertical image conveys how tall these trees are and gives the impression that they are reaching up to the sky. What do you think? Does this image work better as vertical or horizontal composition?
