Drink and Click ™ VAN220Our theme for January is In MidairOur first location is The August Jack in Kitsilano! We'll do a photowalk towards the beach, and do some jumping around and/or scaring of birds and anything else we can launch into the sky. We'll finish near the beach at The Local, where we can keep an eye on the sunset just in case :)We will leave The August Jack by 3pm sharp. If you own anything we can fly or launch or anything relating to this challenge bring it along! If you've never been to a +Drink and Click™ event before, it's easy!We meet at a bar and have a drink (non alcoholic is okay too!) and meet everyone who showed up. We then do a photowalk (all camera types welcome. This includes your phone!) and finish at a new bar and hang out with your new best friends. The fun doesn't stop there though.. afterwards you can share your photos to this G+ event where we all can see what each other saw, exchange reminiscences, and generally plus one each other's stuff and make silly, yet insightful, comments.  You may also submit up to three photos from the walk into the D&C Monthly Challenge to have a chance at winning some awesome prizes. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them below, invite others you think may be interested, and I hope to see you there! Please RSVP as soon as you can!Drink and Click Vancouver January2014-01-19 14:00:0010G+
Google+7,557,105The Google+ team will be sharing a few updates. RSVP to this event to watch the broadcast live.A Morning with Google+2013-10-29 17:30:0034250G+
Drink and Click ™ VAN220UPDATE! Our first location will be in Kitsilano at The Courderoy at 1943 Cornwall Ave. After some drinks and getting to know each other we'll head out to Kits Beach and park area for some hopefully iconic summer shots for our chapter challenge theme. Maybe someone can bring a frisbee or some other easy park activity props? Our second location will hopefully be The Local at 2210 Cornwall Ave. because they have a big open area outside and it looks like it's going to be sunny, however they don't take reservations so we'll find locale #2 on the fly.Don't forget to RSVP!Summer is upon us! That's why our theme for July is SUMMER. RSVP!If you've never been to a D&C before it's easy! We meet at a bar and have a drink (non alcoholic is okay too!) and meet everyone who showed up. We then do a photowalk (all camera types welcome. This includes your phone!) and finish at a new bar and hang out with your new best friends. If you submit a photo from the walk into the chapter challenge you have a chance at winning some awesome prizes. See you there!Drink & Click VAN July!2013-07-15 02:00:0024G+
Drink and Click ™ VAN220Update! We will meet up at St. Augustine's on Commercial Drive at 4:30. We'll do our photo walk and most likely end up at The Dime, further down Commercial. If we find some rad graffiti we can do some portraits for our black and white chapter challenge! See y'all there!First - Congrats to +Jordan Oram for taking 1st Prize in January's Challenge, Straight Out Of The Camera!! Way to represent, Jordan!!!For March, exact locations TBD - we've learned that we need numbers first in order to secure enough seats! It will be in the downtown core or a close outlying neighbourhood. It'll be awesome as always - the question is: you comin'??Last month was a funny challenge of Photographing Strangers in Bars, which ended up with us staying put in the Morrissey. This time we will get OUTSIDE again, likely picking places a decent distance apart to ensure ample Walking Photo Mayhem. If last month was your first time with us, come again to get a better feel! The Challenge is Black and White. That's pretty open so we're mulling over several fun ideas. Feel free to throw ideas out there! Stay tuned, but mostly, save the date! and RSVP so we can book some tables!Drink and Click: March MeetUp!2013-03-24 16:30:0019G+

Brian Buckley55,635Sharing My Aug 16 Engagers Showcase CircleHappy Saturday. Here is my latest circle of engaging plussers. I am giving away a special prize with this share. Make sure you read the entire post to see how to qualify for the giveaway! There is a very special person who I follow that doesn't like to be included in a mass circle share. This is because she doesn't think her taste is everyone else's cup of tea. She's  +Pam Adger and she is wicked awesome.  I'm recommending that you add her, but she is not in the circle. You'll have to follow her tag to her profile and add her manually . If her tastes aren't for you, then don't add her.READ ON - GIVEAWAY INFORMATION TO COMEThe Engagers Showcase part means that I would love for you to share a link to one of your own recent posts in the comment stream here. That is a unique feature of this type of circle and it's a lot of fun. It also gives everyone a chance to learn a little bit about why I like to have you in my circles, and if they would like to add you to your circles. You'll need to use a public post or Google plus won't give you a link to it. There are lots of new people in this circle. This is your chance to make some great new connections. It's also your chance to win one of our coveted "Blue Footed Boobies" tee shirts. Everyone in this circle (plus Pam) who shares a link to a post will be added into a new circle. We will give one member of that new circle a tee shirt as pictured in this post: http://goo.gl/2MJGE4If you don't have a public post of your own that you would like to share you can include a link to someone else's awesome post that you like.SHARING COMMENTING PLUSSINGAll the above are welcome and appreciated, but please do any of the above for your own reasons. You are in this circle already because of our interactions or because I admire what you do online and I want to recommend you to others. This is not a snowball circle. You don't get in or out by the same criteria as most circles. Thanks again everyone. Enjoy and thank you for your engagement Good luck with the giveaway :) #circleshare   #engagersshowcasecircle   #engagerscircle  2014-08-16 16:24:3236322467152CC G+

I curate like crazy and make this circle up based on interactions on all of my posts and from my go-to peeps. You can count on this croup to be awesome at engagementThere are some people who I follow that don't like to be included in a mass circle share. This is because they feel that their particular brand of googling is not everyone else's cup of tea. +Pam Adger  is one of those folks. She finds a lot of people add her only to  remove her from their circles later. I would love for you to check out her profile. In other news NASA tests snake oil..

My last post on the NASA "quantum vacuum plasma thruster" was mainly about the shoddy theory behind it - like how there's no such thing as a "quantum vacuum plasma".

But you could argue: hey, if the gizmo actually works, isn't that good enough?

Unfortunately, the experiment has problems too.  In brief:

1.  They tested a device that was designed to work and one that was designed not to work.  They both worked.

2.  They tested the devices in a "vacuum chamber", but they didn't take the air out.

3.  They didn't carefully study all possible causes of experimental error... like their devices heating the air.

In a bit more detail:

1.  Their device, called the Cannae drive, was invented by a guy named Guido Fetta.  You can see a picture below.  It's not complicated!  It's a hollow container made of metal, about 11 inches in diameter and 4-5 inches long.  You pump radio waves in one end. At the other end, a copper wire serves as an antenna.  This lets you measure the radio waves bouncing around inside the container, and adjust the frequency.   At a resonant frequency this thing is supposed to generate thrust.

Fetta thought this device would work if you carve slots on one side of the flat part.  The NASA guys tried a version with slots and one without slots.  They claim both versions generate a thrust of 22-48 micronewtons when they pump 28 watts of radio waves into them:

Thrust was observed on both test articles, even though one of the test articles was designed with the expectation that it would not produce thrust. Specifically, one test article contained internal physical modifications that were designed to produce thrust, while the other did not (with the latter being referred to as the "null" test article).

So, basically they found evidence against Fetta's idea: the slots make no difference.  It's like giving someone a placebo and finding it works just as well as the drug you're testing.

They also tried a resistor instead of their device.  They claim this produced no thrust.  This rules out some possibilities of experimental error... but not others.

For example, if parts of their flat metal can get hot and create air currents, that might create the force they saw.  It's a tiny force, less you'd get from 5 milligrams of mass pushing down due to gravity.

2.  Their paper goes into great detail about the "vacuum chamber" their experiment was done in - but in the abstract to the paper, they say they didn't remove the air.  This is important because of the issue of air currents.

It's also just weird.  In their paper they say:

To simulate the space pressure environment, the test rig is rolled into the test chamber. After sealing the chamber, the test facility vacuum pumps are used to reduce the environmental pressure down as far as 5x10E-6 Torr. Two roughing pumps provide the vacuum required to lower the environment to approximately 10 Torr in less than 30 minutes. Then, two high-speed turbo pumps are used to complete the evacuation to 5x10E-6 Torr, which requires a few additional days. During this final evacuation, a large strip heater (mounted around most of the circumference of the cylindrical chamber) is used to heat the chamber interior sufficiently to emancipate volatile substances that typically coat the chamber interior walls whenever the chamber is at ambient pressure with the chamber door open. During test run data takes at vacuum, the turbo pumps continue to run to maintain the hard vacuum environment. The high-frequency vibrations from the turbo pump have no noticeable effect on the testing seismic environment.

They're working really hard to get a good vacuum, right?  But in their abstract they say:

Testing was performed on a low-thrust torsion pendulum that is capable of detecting force at a single-digit micronewton level, within a stainless steel vacuum chamber with the door closed but at ambient atmospheric pressure.

At ambient atmospheric pressure?   What's the point of the fancy vacuum chamber?  A sentence in their conclusions gives a clue.  Talking about future plans, they say:

Vacuum compatible RF amplifiers with power ranges of up to 125 watts will allow testing at vacuum conditions which was not possible using our current RF amplifiers due to the presence of electrolytic capacitors.

So it seems they couldn't actually test their device in a vacuum.

3.  If you're trying to find some small effect, checking the ways you could have screwed up is the most important thing.  The device they're testing is simple, but the test apparatus itself is very complicated, and lots of things could go wrong.

Their paper should have a big section on this, but it doesn't.  Instead it has a section on how if the gizmo works, you could scale it up and do great things:

Figure 23 shows a conservative 300 kilowatt solar electric propulsion roundtrip human exploration class mission to Mars/Deimos. Figure 24 shows a 90 metric ton 2 megawatt (MW) nuclear electric propulsion mission to Mars that has considerable reduction in transit times due to having a thrust to mass ratio greater than the gravitational acceleration of the Sun (0.6 milli-g’s at 1 AU). Figure 25 shows the same spacecraft mass performing a roundtrip mission to the Saturn system spending over a year around two moons of interest, Titan and Enceladus.

This is called 'counting your chickens before your eggs have hatched'.

I would need to be more of an expert than I am to imagine all the things that could go wrong with their experiment.  But just so you see what I mean, here's one thing they do mention:

one visible effect to the seismic environment is the periodic (about one-third to one-quarter Hertz) perturbation created by the waves from the Gulf of Mexico (about 25 miles southeast of Johnson Space Center), especially on windy days.

The thrust they're measuring is so small that waves in the ocean 25 miles away could screw up the experiment!  They tried to deal with this... but it goes to show, you can't revolutionize physics until you carefully check all the sources of error.

I thank Greg Egan and +Matt McIrvin for their help, but of course they're not to blame for any mistakes I made.

The paper I'm talking about was published here:

• David Brady, Harold White, Paul March, James Lawrence and Frank Davies, Anomalous thrust production from an RF test device measured on a low-thrust torsion pendulum, 50th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference, http://arc.aiaa.org/doi/abs/10.2514/6.2014-4029.

Unfortunately it's not free except for the abstract.  Luckily someone has liberated the paper and put a free version here:

Beware: the abstract in the paper is different than the abstract that's publicly available for free.  The publicly available free abstract is longer - and that's where they say they didn't remove the air from the vacuum chamber.

There's a website about Guido Fetta's company and his device:

• Cannae Drive, http://cannae.com/about

It says:

The Cannae Drive is a resonating cavity with design features that redirect the radiation pressure exerted in the cavity to create a radiation pressure imbalance on the cavity. This differential in radiation pressure generates an unbalanced force that creates thrust. The cavity is accelerated without use of propellant. Don't believe it? Study the theory.  Replicate our numerical models.  Review our experimental results.  And draw your own conclusions.

Unfortunately, when I click on the links to theory, numerical models or experimental results, I get:

Amazing shot of Vancouver..

Incredibly, another year has gone by already, and on Saturday it was once again the first of the three Celebration of Light fireworks displays here in Vancouver. This display was by the USA team.

I like to show the fireworks in the context of the city, so rather than heading to the official viewing points right by the water, I instead headed north-east to Mount Seymour, approximately 17km from the actual fireworks barge, and hiked the trail to the Dog Mountain lookout.

Approximately 250,000 people turned out to view the display, but as the sun set and the city lights came on, I was the only person at this lookout, watching and waiting for the display to start. When it did, it took over 45 seconds for the sound of the fireworks to reach me!

As usual, this is another panoramic shot taken with my 70-300mm lens at 300mm. The final photo was made up of five vertical shots stitched together, although I've cropped a bit off the sides. This photo shows the Burrard Inlet, Vancouver Harbour, downtown buildings, Stanley Park, English Bay (where the fireworks barge is) and the UBC peninsula. In the far distance, the lights of Nanaimo and Ladysmith on Vancouver Island can be seen.

The return journey in the dark was rather more tricky than I'd anticipated. I last did this trail in the snow, and found it relatively easy going, but the trail now consisted of a jumble of mud, rocks and thousands of exposed tree roots, all extremely slippery due to the recent rain, and with very few markers. It took me two hours to complete the return journey, slipping and falling three times, and getting lost for about 10 minutes at one point! Needless to say, I was very glad to reach the trailhead sometime after midnight, and am feeling rather bruised and battered!___Amazing shot of Vancouver..

Ira Glass, producer of This American Life ( my favourite podcast - well told stories from all walks of life ) was interviewed on lifehacker.

I love this idea:

Ira Glass, producer of This American Life ( my favourite podcast - well told stories from all walks of life ) was interviewed on lifehacker.

I love this idea:

Keep an eye out for this stolen trailer..

Help Find Our STOLEN +Geek Beat Trailer!
Sometime between 9pm last night and 8am this morning the brand new Geek Beat trailer was stolen from our parking lot at +The Geek House!

The trailer is VERY distinctive because it was custom made for us, so it should be extremely easy to spot.  Features include:

* It's a 12' long x 7' wide Cargo Craft Elite V nose
* It had custom smooth sidewalls (no visible rivets)
* Tandem axle (two sets of wheels)
* Two tone with black on top and silver on bottom
* Custom wheels
* So new we don't even have the permanent license plates for it yet!
* The top front was absolutely COVERED with dead bugs from the long drive to and from New York.

It was purchased from R&J Trailers in Seagoville, TX, and most of the stickers were already peeled off with the exception of PART of the R&J Trailers sticker on the front side of the trailer.  It currently only says something like "railers.com"

If you spot the trailer, please immediately call 911 and report it as stolen.  Also, it would be awesome if you could help try and find it by spreading this post and encouraging others to join the hunt.  Also, help keep an eye out on Craig's List or eBay for the trailer.

The worst news of all is that I'm hearing there is probably a problem with our insurance which might mean a total loss for this theft.  As in no reimbursement.

Crime sucks. Help us find our trailer. And make the bastards who stole it pay.___Keep an eye out for this stolen trailer..

There doesn't seem to be a solid consensus as to the cause, but I'm not interested in experimenting with my dog's life..

So it seems from comments on BoingBoing this is out by a factor of 10. (too small)  #Lazyjournalist ..

It also seems from the comments that people don't get (that even if it is too small by 10x) that this is merely a great way to visually demonstrate the scale needed relative to a small part of Africa.

IE Actual solar power should be installed at the point of load, right where it's needed. Nobody rational would recommend putting all of it in one single location.

It does show that those Northern African countries could build up manufacturing industries along the coast, encouraged by access to solar panel arrays in the nearby desert. Aluminum smelting uses a Lot of electricity..

Peas in a pod. Hurrah for sociopaths.

We'll have a handful of jobs while they build oil pipelines through pristine wilderness, and a few more jobs when they have to clean up an oil spill on the Pacific coast. All so Harper can sell off our natural resources cheap to China which is already literally choking in fumes.

Yeah, that's worth "protecting".

How about follow Germany's model and cause a massive build out of solar power for Canada?  That would create a whole lot more jobs than a couple of leaky pipelines.

Who the hell voted for this nutbar??

Exactly. EXACTLY!!

"Solar Roadbeds" is at best the work of incompetents, and at worst a scam

I've seen yet another glowing post over the concept of replacing asphalt with solar panels on roadways.  Sorry, people, but this is either a scam or something promoted by idiots, pure and simple.  Or both.

The problem facing expansion of solar power isn't places to put solar collectors.  It's the cost of that deployment.

Total electric energy consumption in the US for 2013 was 4,058 TWh [1].

Sunshine delivers about 1 kW per square meter area (or 10 MW per hectare).  Solar PV cells can convert about 20% of that (their efficiency), and effectively operate about 30% of any 24 hour day ("capacity factor").  Which means you can figure out how much land area you'd need to provide 4,058 TWh in a year pretty easily.  I'm really fond of GNU units[1.5] for conversions such as this:

You have: 4058 TWh / (1 kW/m^2 * 0.2 * 0.3 * 1 year)
You want: km^2
* 7715.5804

That turns out to be a region 87 km on a side.  Or if you prefer square miles, a hair under 3,000 mi^2, or 55 miles on a side.  You could pave Rhode Island over with solar panels, power the nation, and rid yourself of the most corrupt state government all in one fell swoop.

There are other details:  the sun doesn't shine 24/7, storage or alternate sources are still required, etc.  That's not the point here, it's the logistics of gross provisioning.  Storage or alternate generation needs can be addressed through overprovisioning and other generating sources (hydro, geothermal, nuclear, wind, biomass, synfuel-as-storage, etc.).  That's another discussion.

The point is this:

WE ARE NOT HURTING FOR SPACE.

Cost is another story though.  Solar is approaching fossil fuels in levelized cost of electricity[2], but installed cost per MW still remains fairly high:  about $5 million/MW for residential, $2.26m for utility-scale.  It's also sensitive to the lifetime of equipment.

So the 1.5 TW of power capacity[3] you'd need to install would run, at present-day best rates, would run you $3.5 trillion to $7.7 trillion to build out.  And that's assuming a 20-40 year life of equipment.[4]

The Solar Roadways concept, by contrast, would cost at least $56 trillion, and deteriorate far more quickly.[5]

The roadbed anti-solution is:

• More expensive per square meter.

• Less efficient due to poor orientation, road grime, damage, and shading from vehicles.

• Has a VASTLY shorter life.  The busiest roadways are resurfaced every 2-3 years, and even less-trafficked residential streets are typically repaved on 5-10 year schedules.  That means a loss of all your solar PV capacity and a very rapid investment amortization.

You want to deploy solar someplace sane?   Put it on your fucking roof.  You want to deploy it at parking lots?   Build an awning over it and put the cells there, angled toward the sun for improved efficiency.   You want to deploy this along roadways?   There's often a median or right of way 2-3x the width of a roadway available, and better yet, it's not filled with cars and trucks beating the surface to shit.

No, this isn't a good idea.  It's an insult to retards and idiots everywhere.  And it's preying on the gullibility of naive investors.
