Drink and Click ™ VAN236*Happy New Year, everyone!* This month's event is *Double Exposure*  Time to get creative or just play around with the way we look at things! This month we're making a run for the border (almost) and heading down to White Rock!   We'll meet up for a quick refreshment at The Hemingway, play around on the strip, then gather back at Jan's on the Beach where there's a good chance @103864209986771135372 will treat us to some entertainment on guitar!   Sandy beach, ocean views, the famous promenade, and of course the scenic pier should give us plenty of options for some creative multiple exposures!  Set aside a short afternoon for some good times with some great folks!   If you've never tried double-exposure, there'll likely be a few people who can give you a quick lesson to get you started! Here's a nifty Youtube clip with a bit of ideas and how-to for multiple exposure:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJsmQVVjalY (Thanks to @109730141206260750030  for the tip!) If you've never been to a +Drink and Click™ event before, it's easy! We meet at a bar and have a drink (non alcoholic is okay too!) and meet everyone who showed up. We then do a photo-walk (all camera types welcome. This includes your phone!) and finish at a new bar and hang out with your new best friends. The fun doesn't stop there though... afterwards you can share your photos to this G+ event where we all can see what each other saw, exchange reminiscences, and generally plus one each other's stuff and make silly, yet insightful, comments.  You may also submit up to three photos from the walk into the D&C Monthly Challenge to have a chance at winning some awesome prizes. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them below, invite others you think may be interested, and I hope to see you there! Please RSVP as soon as you can!D&C Van January - Double Exposure2015-01-31 15:00:009
Drink and Click ™ VAN236*November's Event: Off-Camera Flash* *UPDATE* We'll meet up at the Two Parrots Taverna at 1ish which should give us enough time to have a refreshment and/or lunch, and catch up with one another. *At 3pm* we'll head over to the studio +116166930518893390711 was kind enough to book for us at *1067 Granville Street*.  If everyone shows up to the studio, and we each bring $5, that should cover the studio time for a few hours of off-camera flashing fun and learning! This month's chapter-wide challenge is off-camera flash, so it's time to get creative with some lighting setups! If you've never been to a +Drink and Click™ event before, it's easy! We meet at a bar and have a drink (non alcoholic is okay too!) and meet everyone who showed up. We then do a photo-walk (all camera types welcome. This includes your phone!) and finish at a new bar and hang out with your new best friends. Be sure to invite yourself to the chapter-wide challenge November event here: https://plus.google.com/events/ceheo17950bamtugf1l7nk0rhnc  and then upload up to 3 of your favourite photos for a chance at some awesome prizes!   If you have any questions please feel free to ask them below, invite others you think may be interested, and I hope to see you there! Please RSVP as soon as you can!Drink and Click Van: November2014-11-22 13:00:0013
Drink and Click ™ VAN236*Our theme for January is In Midair* Our first location is The August Jack in Kitsilano!  We'll do a photowalk towards the beach, and do some jumping around and/or scaring of birds and anything else we can launch into the sky. We'll finish near the beach at The Local, where we can keep an eye on the sunset just in case :) We will leave The August Jack by 3pm sharp. If you own anything we can fly or launch or anything relating to this challenge bring it along! If you've never been to a +Drink and Click™ event before, it's easy! We meet at a bar and have a drink (non alcoholic is okay too!) and meet everyone who showed up. We then do a photowalk (all camera types welcome. Google+10,876,664The Google+ team will be sharing a few updates. RSVP to this event to watch the broadcast live.A Morning with Google+2013-10-29 17:30:0033825
Drink and Click ™ VAN236*UPDATE! Our first location will be in Kitsilano at The Courderoy at 1943 Cornwall Ave. After some drinks and getting to know each other we'll head out to Kits Beach and park area for some hopefully iconic summer shots for our chapter challenge theme. Maybe someone can bring a frisbee or some other easy park activity props?* *Our second location will hopefully be The Local at 2210 Cornwall Ave. because they have a big open area outside and it looks like it's going to be sunny, however they don't take reservations so we'll find locale #2 on the fly.* *Don't forget to RSVP!* Summer is upon us! That's why our theme for July is *SUMMER*. RSVP! If you've never been to a D&C before it's easy! We meet at a bar and have a drink (non alcoholic is okay too!) and meet everyone who showed up. We then do a photowalk (all camera types welcome. This includes your phone!) and finish at a new bar and hang out with your new best friends. If you submit a photo from the walk into the chapter challenge you have a chance at winning some awesome prizes. See you there!Drink & Click VAN July!2013-07-15 02:00:0024
Drink and Click ™ VAN236*Update! We will meet up at St. Augustine's on Commercial Drive at 4:30. We'll do our photo walk and most likely end up at The Dime, further down Commercial. If we find some rad graffiti we can do some portraits for our black and white chapter challenge! See y'all there!* First - Congrats to +Jordan Oram for taking 1st Prize in January's Challenge, Straight Out Of The Camera!! Way to represent, Jordan!!! For March, exact locations TBD - we've learned that we need numbers first in order to secure enough seats! It will be in the downtown core or a close outlying neighbourhood. It'll be awesome as always - the question is: you comin'?? Last month was a funny challenge of Photographing Strangers in Bars, which ended up with us staying put in the Morrissey. This time we will get OUTSIDE again, likely picking places a decent distance apart to ensure ample Walking Photo Mayhem. If last month was your first time with us, come again to get a better feel! The Challenge is *Black and White*. That's pretty open so we're mulling over several fun ideas. Feel free to throw ideas out there!  Stay tuned, but mostly, *save the date!* and RSVP so we can book some tables!Drink and Click: March MeetUp!2013-03-24 16:30:0019

Sounds like Canada.

I'm 40.  In 1975 I was born in Gosford, NSW, Australia.  My father moved to follow the work.  He was a surveyor.  My earliest memories are of Darwin, in the Northern Territory.  I was in preschool at the time.  Grade 1 was in The Blue Mountains near Sydney.  Central Queensland saw me doing Correspondence School in Grade 5.  Outback Queensland in Grade 7 to the mining town of Blackwater.  Started high school in Tropical Cairns and finished high school in the port city of Gladstone back in Central Queensland.

Since school I've worked as a computer technician, cotton chipper in Emerald, karaoke host, Harvey Norman salesman, stringer (news cameraman), voice-overs, air-conditioner installer, tradesman's assistant working on QR coal-hauling locomotives, graphic artist and pizza delivery driver.  I've been a singer/guitarist/songwriter in at least four different bands that never went anywhere.  I have probably enough material I've written myself to fill an album, but I'll probably never will get around to recording it.  I spent a few years making wedding videos in my own business which I closed down when I got bored of making wedding videos.  I'm currently working at a printshop where we we do all kinds of printing and sign writing.

I love computer games and all things tech.  My first computer was a Sinclair ZX80 that I got in 1981.  Second was a Commodore64 followed by a Macintosh II.  After that I got into Windows PC's (or DOS PC's as they were back then) and all the games they offered.  Windows 3.11, Windows95, 98, 2000, XP...  Then Vista burned me and I now use Macs.  They're simply better.

I've been married for 15 years and have a nice block of land with a humble little house on it.  We have a cat and a dog and no kids.

My point is, I've never had any interest in politics in my life.  Beyond being able to name the Prime Minister and the Premier of my state, I didn't really care.

Look at me now.  Since Tony Abbott and the LNP have been in power, I've joined a political party.  90% of my posts are political.  I'm talking politics with strangers online.

I can name the entire front bench of the government!  That information shouldn't be important to me!

But now it is.

Just to understand all the crap that we're being subjected to by the Abbott government, I've had to learn who everyone in his government is, what they're job is, what they're actually supposed to do.  I've had to learn how government works, what divisions and electorates are, where the boundaries are.  How preferences work.  (That's one that is rarely understood by anyone I've met.  It's not even complicated.)  Who the opposition are and their role in government.  I've had to learn how it's "supposed to work" and why it's not working in an acceptable way now.  The reasons are many and varied.  Refer to any Australian Politics channel from the past 2 years.

I've had to read party policies.  Policies of the Labor party.  Policies of the Liberal Party.  Policies of the LNP.  Policies of the National Party.  Policies of the Liberal Democratic Party (wholly shit!).  Policies of The Greens.  Policies of the Pirate Party.

All this time I could have been learning about robotics or playing computer games or something constructive.  If politicians did their job and acted in the interests of the people they represent instead of representing the interests of lobby groups that fund their political campaigns, then a huge portion of Australia could go back to doing what we do best.  Creating, inventing and innovating in a diverse multicultural society surrounded by the paradise that is Australia.___Sounds like Canada.

Not really wanting to go there, but here's why Google buying Twitter would be horribly stupid:

The technology is dumb. 140 character unlinked "conversations" is no where near as good as the software running Google plus. For a few billion any fool could come up with something far better.

So really, the only value in the acquisition is the user base. It's fairly obvious the actual Twitter user base tends to be anti Google, and have an exceptional dislike of Google plus specifically (especially the tech media).

If Google bought Twitter it would die faster than it is now, as all the twitterati would abandon it in droves.

Imagine spending a bunch of time and money to visit some amazing place, only to find the air filled with buzzing drones.

It will be the drone version of this ridiculous scene:

This will not happen, people will not put up with this. The more badly behaved the early adopters are, the worse the legal solution will be when it finally arrives.___

Smoke Blankets British Columbia: View 1 | NASA Terra Satellite
July 8, 2015: A difficult fire season in western Canada brought its impacts to coastal city streets in early July 2015. A thick pall of smoke settled over Vancouver and adjacent areas of British Columbia, leading some residents to wear face masks and health officials to warn residents and World Cup tourists against outdoor activities.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image in the late morning on July 6th. Note how the tan and gray smoke almost completely obscures the Strait of Georgia and southern Vancouver Island. Winds shifted abruptly between July 5 and 6, driving the smoke plume toward the east, dispersing it in some places while fouling the air in areas to the east, such as the Fraser Valley.

In the images, the principal source of the smoke appears to be fires burning 100 to 150 kilometers north of the city of Vancouver and roughly 50 to 70 kilometers north and west of Pemberton and the ski resort area of Whistler. The Elaho Valley fire was sparked by lightning in mid-June 2015, and stayed relatively small and contained until it started growing vigorously on July 4. By the morning of July 7, the fire and its scar covered about 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres), and the blaze was uncontrolled on all fronts. Fire managers reported crown fires—blazes high in the forest canopy that can leap across areas quickly when fanned by winds. Thick smoke and gusty winds prevented airborne firefighting flights on July 6, according to news reports.

To the northeast of the Elaho fire, the Boulder Creek Wildfire Complex also exploded, growing tenfold in a day. Firefighters estimate that the blaze spans at least 5,500 hectares (13,500 acres); it is not contained on any front. To the east (not in the image), the Cougar Creek fire has claimed 5,000 hectares (12,000 acres).

Western Canada and Alaska have been plagued by an intense fire season that started earlier than normal (usually late July). Below-average winter snowfall and extreme spring and early summer temperatures have left a vast region dry, hot, and primed for fire. As of July 7, 2015, at least 182 reported wildfires were burning in British Columbia; 23 of them were sparked on July 6 alone.

According to Canadian fire officials and news reports, there have been 841 fires in the province since April 1, and nearly half of them have been started by lightning. Observers in Canada and Alaska have noted higher than usual numbers of lightning strikes.

Prime Minister Harper here in Canada has the exact same playbook.

"The Abbott government has been caught red-handed using national security, our independent police and security agencies, and the fear of terrorism itself, as tools for its own gain. Once or twice might be contestable, but a clear pattern has emerged revealing a government too ready to stoke community fear and then parlay its 'tough' policy responses for its own aggrandisement."

Bookmarking this one. Here it is +Alex Burton

I occasionally will write a long article. This article is, I have to say, longer than even what I would write. But it explains a tremendous number of really important things extremely clearly: power production and use, the history of cars, how these things all fit together, and how Tesla is trying to change that. There's no way I could give you a useful short summary, because the point of this article is that, by the time you're done reading it, you'll understand all of the things well enough that you can join in very serious conversations about them.

So don't feel compelled to read this at one sitting -- but this is an article you may want to bookmark, and read bit by bit, because by the time you reach the end, you'll have learned a lot.___Bookmarking this one. Here it is +Alex Burton

Ever notice how the power of the Streisand effect always seems to be used for good, and not evil?

Lol!

Rupert Murdoch, retire already. Nobody is listening.

This is too cool. Now I want a pebble watch..

What's the time, monk?

If you liked the Ciphers of the Monks number system (https://plus.google.com/+EmlynORegan/posts/JwV9Dn8jra7), I've published a watchface using this system for Pebble watches. Free of course. There's absolutely no way to link the published app to you (oops Pebble, bad idea), but you can search for Ciphers of the Monks.

I built this because +Jodie O'Regan got me a Pebble for my birthday recently. Loving it, bless her cotton socks. This is my first shot at making something for it. ___This is too cool. Now I want a pebble watch..
