Drink and Click ™ VAN242Vancouver is a foodie paradise!  This month's challenge is *food photography*, so get your hunger on as we visit the heart of the food scene in Vancouver: Commercial Drive!  Hone your instagramming skills or try your hand at getting pro results, or just have fun enjoying some of the best food the city has to offer.   If you've never been to a Drink and Click™ event before, it's easy! We meet at a bar and have a drink (non alcoholic is okay too!) and meet everyone who showed up. We then do a photo walk (all camera types welcome - this includes your phone!) and finish at a new bar and hang out with your new best friends. The fun doesn't stop there though... afterwards you can share your photos to this G+ event where we all can see what each other saw, exchange reminiscences, and generally plus one each other's stuff and make silly, yet insightful, comments.  You may also submit up to three photos from the walk into the D&C Monthly Challenge to have a chance at winning some awesome prizes! If you have any questions please feel free to ask them below, invite others you think may be interested, and I hope to see you there! Please RSVP as soon as you can! This month prizes brought to you by our awesome sponsors: 1st Place @100424993750772730018  one year account 2nd Place @113098803538418320794  ebook 3rd Place @108013589332077559621   $20 OFF If you're attending, be sure to also join the chapter-wide challenge and enter up to 3 of your images to win one of the above great prizes! Drink and Click ™ VAN242*Happy New Year, everyone!* This month's event is *Double Exposure*  Time to get creative or just play around with the way we look at things! This month we're making a run for the border (almost) and heading down to White Rock!   We'll meet up for a quick refreshment at The Hemingway, play around on the strip, then gather back at Jan's on the Beach where there's a good chance @103864209986771135372 will treat us to some entertainment on guitar!   Sandy beach, ocean views, the famous promenade, and of course the scenic pier should give us plenty of options for some creative multiple exposures!  Set aside a short afternoon for some good times with some great folks!   If you've never tried double-exposure, there'll likely be a few people who can give you a quick lesson to get you started! Here's a nifty Youtube clip with a bit of ideas and how-to for multiple exposure:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJsmQVVjalY (Thanks to @109730141206260750030  for the tip!) Drink and Click ™ VAN242*November's Event: Off-Camera Flash* *UPDATE* We'll meet up at the Two Parrots Taverna at 1ish which should give us enough time to have a refreshment and/or lunch, and catch up with one another. *At 3pm* we'll head over to the studio +116166930518893390711 was kind enough to book for us at *1067 Granville Street*.  If everyone shows up to the studio, and we each bring $5, that should cover the studio time for a few hours of off-camera flashing fun and learning! This month's chapter-wide challenge is off-camera flash, so it's time to get creative with some lighting setups! If you've never been to a +Drink and Click™ event before, it's easy! Drink and Click ™ VAN242*Our theme for January is In Midair* Our first location is The August Jack in Kitsilano!  We'll do a photowalk towards the beach, and do some jumping around and/or scaring of birds and anything else we can launch into the sky. We'll finish near the beach at The Local, where we can keep an eye on the sunset just in case :) We will leave The August Jack by 3pm sharp. If you own anything we can fly or launch or anything relating to this challenge bring it along! If you've never been to a +Drink and Click™ event before, it's easy! Google+12,209,253The Google+ team will be sharing a few updates. RSVP to this event to watch the broadcast live.A Morning with Google+2013-10-29 17:30:0033725
Drink and Click ™ VAN242*UPDATE! Our first location will be in Kitsilano at The Courderoy at 1943 Cornwall Ave. After some drinks and getting to know each other we'll head out to Kits Beach and park area for some hopefully iconic summer shots for our chapter challenge theme. Maybe someone can bring a frisbee or some other easy park activity props?* *Our second location will hopefully be The Local at 2210 Cornwall Ave. because they have a big open area outside and it looks like it's going to be sunny, however they don't take reservations so we'll find locale #2 on the fly.* *Don't forget to RSVP!* Summer is upon us! That's why our theme for July is *SUMMER*. RSVP! If you've never been to a D&C before it's easy! We meet at a bar and have a drink (non alcoholic is okay too!) and meet everyone who showed up. We then do a photowalk (all camera types welcome. This includes your phone!) and finish at a new bar and hang out with your new best friends. If you submit a photo from the walk into the chapter challenge you have a chance at winning some awesome prizes. See you there!Drink & Click VAN July!2013-07-15 02:00:0024
Drink and Click ™ VAN242*Update! We will meet up at St. Augustine's on Commercial Drive at 4:30. We'll do our photo walk and most likely end up at The Dime, further down Commercial. If we find some rad graffiti we can do some portraits for our black and white chapter challenge! See y'all there!* First - Congrats to +Jordan Oram for taking 1st Prize in January's Challenge, Straight Out Of The Camera!! Way to represent, Jordan!!! For March, exact locations TBD - we've learned that we need numbers first in order to secure enough seats! It will be in the downtown core or a close outlying neighbourhood. It'll be awesome as always - the question is: you comin'?? Last month was a funny challenge of Photographing Strangers in Bars, which ended up with us staying put in the Morrissey. This time we will get OUTSIDE again, likely picking places a decent distance apart to ensure ample Walking Photo Mayhem. If last month was your first time with us, come again to get a better feel! The Challenge is *Black and White*. That's pretty open so we're mulling over several fun ideas. Feel free to throw ideas out there!  Stay tuned, but mostly, *save the date!* and RSVP so we can book some tables!Drink and Click: March MeetUp!2013-03-24 16:30:0019

We need a much more concise replacement for the "Cargo Cult" concept. The definition is a bit long winded..

I first read about it in Richard Feynman's book "Surely You're Joking Dr. Fenyman":

In the South Seas there is a cargo cult of people. During the war they saw airplanes land with lots of good materials, and they want the same thing to happen now. In the South Seas there is a cargo cult of people. During the war they saw airplanes land with lots of good materials, and they want the same thing to happen now. So they've arranged to imitate things like runways, to put fires along the sides of the runways, to make a wooden hut for a man to sit in, with two wooden pieces on his head like headphones and bars of bamboo sticking out like antennas—he's the controller—and they wait for the airplanes to land. They're doing everything right. The form is perfect. It looks exactly the way it looked before. But it doesn't work. No airplanes land. So I call these things cargo cult science, because they follow all the apparent precepts and forms of scientific investigation, but they're missing something essential, because the planes don't land.

If they adjust the self driving cars to drive like humans, then self driving cars will have the same accident rate as humans. (Ok, they'd still be better than humans, due to fast reaction time, and 360 degree multitasking)..

It does seem though that Google needs to have the car consider what will happen if someone is tailgating the car, and they decide to stop suddenly for a potential accident in front.

It also seems to me that many current driving laws are in place because humans are bad drivers. Watch the videos for Amazon's self driving robot product shelves for example. Split second timing and "near misses" everywhere, because the shelf robot can easily handle it.

Anyone have experience getting a lense repaired? What is a typical cost just to get a repair estimate?

The details:

So, my sleeve caught my D3200 strap and I dropped the camera to the floor. This lens took the fall, and now it won't autofocus, and it feels a little rough on the zoom when it's at the shortest length.
It seems to work ok on manual focus.

A quick survey online shows it's worth around $300 ish used.

Should I take it into a Nikon repair shop for an estimate, or just live with it?  (assuming it actually takes good photos anymore).

There's this old folk song in Mexico called Cancion Mixteca.
I first heard it as recorded by Ry Cooder on the Paris, Texas  soundtrack years ago.

Off and on over the years I've dabbled at playing it myself. Something about it just tweaks my heart, corny as it is.

Down here in Mexico, I've become "that guy" who always requests Cancion Mixteca from the Mariachi bands that cycle through each restaurant here in Bucerias.

We just lost a good friend to sudden cancer, and this song seems to fit just perfectly as Jan and I have a drink or two to our good friend Cam Shuttleworth.

The lyrics in English are a good match to the situation.
Live is short, make sure you let your loved ones know you love them.

Cancion Mixteca in English:

How far I am from the land where I was born!
Immense nostalgia invades my heart;
And seeing myself so lonely and sad like a leaf in the wind,
I want to cry, I want to die from this feeling.
Oh Land of Sun! I yearn to see you!
Now that I'm so far from you, I live without light and love;
And seeing myself so lonely and sad like a leaf in the wind,
I want to cry, I want to die from this feeling.___

I've often thought this was an almost ignored resource. I've assumed the problem was drilling costs.

"There is an infinite amount of energy lying right beneath our feet. It is a renewable and stable energy source – free of CO2 emissions. Researchers are now planning to drill deep into the Earth to extract it. If they succeed it will be a major technological breakthrough. Ninety-nine per cent of planet Earth has a temperature in excess of 1,000 degrees Celsius as a result of residual heat inherited from the Earth's primordial origins and the breakdown of radioactive materials. This heat can be transformed into energy – and there is more than enough to go round".___I've often thought this was an almost ignored resource. I've assumed the problem was drilling costs.

Singing lessons! Check out some of the intro videos here. Enjoy!

I made an online course. On singing. It's good because I know how to teach singing. I DONOT know how to sell online courses. I have absolutely no idea how to "get it out there". How do you sell online courses?

Reshare to bookmark. I'd like to use blender for 3d printing (solid modeling tools) but I find the user interface almost incomprehensible..

Finally a good software tutorial I got to the end of!

I normally get very impatient when following tutorials usually getting distracted trying to figure it out on my own... and end up having not much to show for it.

This was my first experience of the open source software Blender and in addition to being a very good introduction to the software this tutorial kept me on track and gave me something pretty to show for my time at the end of it.___Reshare to bookmark.
