Back at the beginning of the month we held our annual Academy for talented young musicians – a week of intensive sessions led by our Principals. This year it was the turn of the woodwind players to take part. Our Principal Flute Gareth Davies led the flute section sessions, and this video is the result of some of their work. They're playing a fantastic arrangement for seven flutes of the Scherzo from Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream, written specially for the Academy by Carla Rees.

When the BBC Proms are on and there are orchestras from all over the world descending on London in a very concentrated space of time, rehearsal space is at a premium. The BBC Symphony Orchestra sent us this pic of the road outside the Maida Vale Studios today, where our truck is fighting for space with the BBC Concert Orchestra truck... Oi, it's our turn!!

For the last month nine LSO players have been down at the +Festival d'Aix-en-Provence to coach the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée (Mediterranean Youth Orchestra) on their summer course. Formed from young people from the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and the countries bordering the Mediterranean, the orchestra supports these young musicians in their musical training and at the beginning of their career.

Tonight is the culmination of this summer's work, and you can watch the concert live on YouTube from 7pm (UK time). They've been working on Mahler 4, Verdi Sicilienne Vespers and Ana Sokolovic's Concerto for Orchestra. And they are AMAZING!

The Monster in the Maze - a new opera by Jonathan Dove with a libretto by Alasdair Middleton, jointly commissioned by the +Berliner Philharmoniker, LSO and +Festival d'Aix-en-Provence - received its UK premiere on Sunday. With a cast of hundreds of adult and youth singers from our local community, plus professional soloists, musicians from the +Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the LSO, this was an epic way to end our season and is the shape of things to come as we start to work with our music-director-to-be Sir Simon Rattle.

These photos were taken in the dress rehearsal by Alasdair Muir. Want to know more about The Monster? Check this out: http://www.monsterinthemaze.com/

The LSO is sad to hear of the death of its friend and long-time collaborator, the film composer James Horner, yesterday. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this sad time.

The LSO recorded 16 soundtracks with James over more than 20 years. In this interview, recorded back in 2009, he says some very nice things about working with us and the relationship we shared with him.

A lovely video by Yamaha in which our Co-Principal Trombone Peter Moore talks about his Yamaha instrument, his life in the LSO and how he got his start in life from brass bands in Manchester. Pete is such a great ambassador for young musicians, at only 19 years old. Well worth a watch.

We kick off the LSO International Violin Festival (April–June 2015 ) with the chance to chat live to Roman Simovic, Leader of the London Symphony Orchestra. What's life like in the LSO? How does he balance this with his solo career? How do you get a career started? What difference does having a Strad make, and can you even tell the difference between an expensive violin and a cheap one?

Come and hangout with Roman. We have eight places for the public to join this Hangout. To be in with a chance to take part, send us a question for Roman by Wednesday 8 April in one of the following ways:

1. Put a comment on this thread
2. Tweet us @londonsymphony with the hashtag #lsohangout
3. Send us a message via our Facebook page
4. Email to comment@lso.co.uk
