Higgs Higgs Higgs Higgs

HIGGS!

Today, a huge breakthrough was made in physics. And it all rests on the seemingly simple graph below: it shows the detection of what is almost certainly the Higgs boson, a fundamental particle that is predicted to be critical in giving other particles mass!

I suspect that graph may well be in physics books for decades to come:

The bottom line is that two independent detectors at the Large Hadron Collider have found a new particle at an energy of 126 GeV (about 125 times the mass of a proton) with a confidence level of - get this - 99.9999%. This new particle is consistent with predictions made by the Standard Model of particle physics of what the Higgs should look like. This discovery is so strong that scientists are essentially saying it must be the Higgs boson.

This is a breakthrough in modern physics, a monumental first step in understanding one of the most basic questions that can be asked: what is mass?

I have a description of this discovery, how it was done, and what it means here:

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2012/07/04/higgs/

There are links in there with all the other information you need to understand this critical and amazing and wonderful giant leap for science that was made today. ___Higgs Higgs Higgs Higgs

Innnteresting

There is no question that melting ice sheets and glaciers will be the dominant contributor to the rising sea levels in the future as melting accelerates with rising global temperatures. But I thought it really interesting to read about the sheer amount of 18 trillion tonnes of water which have been removed from underground aquifers without being replaced over the past half century. This accounts for a rise of 5cm of sea levels since 1961 and did exceed by twofold the effect of global ice melting and thermal expansion of sea water!___Innnteresting

The exact opposite of what advertising sells us.

A human worth being lives by function before form.

The authors looked at the relationship between self-esteem and product choice (among lamps and calculators) when one option is more physically attractive and the other more functional. The authors found that participants who had completed a prior self-affirming task were less likely to choose the highly aesthetic option, but instead chose based on function.___Confirmation :-)

Your Work Ethic Depends on Dopamine Levels Across the Brain

Some of us work hard, others are slackers—and for a long time the reason behind radically different work ethics has been a mystery. But new research reveals that dopamine levels in three different areas of the brain influence our willingness to work.

After some illuminating discussion on Facebook and some more research (and thought) of my own, I've come to the (admittedly weak) conclusion that humans are certainly affecting Earth's climate via the accelerating use of combustible fossil fuels. The next question is, "what should be do about it, if anything, and when?"

What we might be seeing over the next 100 years, in a nutshell:

Edit: I’m pretty sure our models of global population predict something on the order of a steady-state 10 billion people before too long (based on historic trends, the observed phenomenon that well-developed countries have lower than 2-children-per-couple birthrates, and the fact that underdeveloped countries are quickly developing).

Google's Delusions of Openness

(Warning: This is a long Essay in Response to recent Utterings of King Google aka Mr Sergey Brin)

https://plus.google.com/u/0/109813896768294978296/posts/44gsPvAm5a5

http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2012/04/open-web-google-brin/

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/apr/15/web-freedom-threat-google-brin

----------------

"Openness" is one of the many Fetishes of Tech-People and Companies, usually attached to equally great Rubber Words like "Standards" and "Access".

Usually these Words are mostly used when one of the Giants has a serious Market Disadvantage wants equal access to our Money. Apple loved to complain about Microsoft's lack of "Openness", until they had their own little Monopoly etc.

"Openness" is a powerful and dangerous Word.

We often see "Openness" as Synonyms for "Fairness" and "Democracy", while Tech-Companies mean something completely different.

They are mostly concerned with Machines and Databases talking to each other, it's about how Data is formatted and if that Format is "open" or just one Companies golden Secret ...

Today too often are political and social Discussions intermingled with technological Propaganda.

So the Freedom of one Company to suck in all everybody's Data has certainly NOTHING to do with our personal Freedoms ...

----------------

Openness is essential to Google's Business Case

Mr Brin likes to complain that the "the principles of openness" on the Net are under Threat (in the Guardian Interview).

"The kind of environment that we developed Google in, the reason that we were able to develop a search engine, is the web was so open. Once you get too many rules, that will stifle innovation."

Let's look at this in Detail:

1. Google needs to able to access (read crawl) as much Information as possible to provide it's Search Service which is Basis for it's Advertising Business. The more relevant the Information you find via Google the better Ads it can sell.

2. Google dominates the Search and the Advertising Market, which makes it literally the Overlord of the Internet. If Google doesn't "know" you or deletes you from Search Results you almost cease to exist for the everybody else that uses Google Search.

3. The Web was once "open", because "we" hardly had the technical Expertise or Tools to secure it. That's why Google was able to suck down everything ...

4. ... and many Content Creators are no longer willing to freely fill Google's Databases - so Google can make good Money from their WORK. Many Publishers have fought and are still fighting bitter legal Battles against Google for a fair Share from the Profits made via their Content.

5. Since Google is such a powerful Multiplier no Company can't afford NOT to be included and featured via Google. Google's Dominance ensures the Compliance of small, medium and even giant Companies.

So Facebook is not willing to hand over it's Data so willingly to fill Google's Coffers? Good! Time for some Competition ... and why should they open their Data to Google's insatiable Hunger for Data?

Why should any Company willingly allow any other Company to Money from their Work?

----------------

The Google Monopoly in Search

We Consumers are so used to the Idea that ONE Search Enhine is enough to find everything that we have never truly considered how much Power and Privileged we give this single Company called Google.

Searching or Research was once a time consuming and difficult Process before Internet Search Engines and Google was the first Company that delivered excellent Results (sorry Alta Vista).

We Consumers have whole heartedly embraced Google Search, but this has given it a too powerful Position and Deadlock on one of the Internet's Key Function of creating a searchable global Knowledge Repository.

When Google talks about "Openness" it primarily means it's access to Data to built their Indexes to sell Advertising for a lot of Money.

We Consumers confuse this quasi free Service for an open Service like Public Libraries, but Google has made us part of the Business Concept - and we swallowed it completely ...

----------------

Abuse of Power - Openness

Another misguided Mix of the technical "Openness" and political "Openness" is the Access to Information.

Mr Brin loves to complain that Governments use their Power to close down open Access to Information and use Censorship. Once again this creates the lovely Impression that Google cares for Democracy and this Thing called Openness.

But let's look at Details:

1. The Internet should belong to the People, not to Companies.

2. It was an Delusion of the early Internet that it is an unregulated Space. Governments are now enforcing their Ownership.

3. Google's Interest in Openness is in the End a commercial Interest and has NOTHING to do with a Citizens Rights. Therefore it's a Conflict of Interest when Google recommends Openness, when it makes Money from it.

4. Google's Search Results are also not "open", but based on the commercial Interests of Google. So what you get via Google is NOT neutral and the Process by which Google ranks Companies, Content and all Forms of Information is their OWN CLOSED Process. It is not an "open" and "democratic" Index of Information on the Internet, but purely shaped by commercial Interests.

5. Google is constantly forced and challenged by commercial Lawsuits and various Governments to censor, expand or modify their Search Results. So often you "find" different Information based on the Country you are searching from - although it comes all from the same giant Google Index.

6. There is now way for the Public to get "unfiltered" Access to the Google Index - it is not open. Any Access is limited by Filters and Rules Google applies to your every Search Request.

It is important to note that we modern Citizens love to use commercial Offerings like Google without caring for a Public Solution.

Why can't the Index of the Internet be either a Public Institution like Public Libraries or non-profits like Wikipedia that are truly open?

I am not sure Google would like a open Public Search Index that would circumvent it's primary Business Case ...

----------------

Abuse of Power - political Censorship and Suppression

Mr. Brin said so nicely: "Today, the primary threat by far to internet freedom is government filtering of political dissent. This has been far more effective than I ever imagined possible across a number of nations. In addition, other countries such as the US have come close to adopting very similar techniques in order to combat piracy and other vices. I believe these efforts have been misguided and dangerous."

Honestly I can describe how incredibly naive this Statement is - and how angry it makes me.

It is like Mr. Kalashnikov complaining about the "Abuse" of his great Invention: "You were supposed to kill these People with my Invention, not those ..."

The Technocrats and Nerd-Herd is almost universal in it's Denial that their Toys are used and specifically built to "enforce political and social Power".

It is NOT the Technocrats Job to define what Freedom is and how our Societies should work.

They should finally takes Responsibility for the powerful Tools of Mass Datafication they create and acknowledge the new Dimensions of political Power and social Control they have created.

It is not only naive, but highly dangerous to think that Power Brokers, Politicians and especially Bureaucrats will NOT abuse these Tools.

It is delusional to cling onto such Believes "that in the End the Internet will win".

And what does that mean "that in the End the Internet will win"? What strange Dreams of Power does this reflect? Freedom for Data or Freedom for People?

Please also note that the good old Phrase "Internet Freedom" is a blurry Concept (as well as the "Internet" winning). Freedom for whom and what? Freedom of Citizens or Companies like Google? The same applies to "Openness", we don't really know that that is supposed to mean.

And as a further Detail it shall be noted, that Google has also profited from Piracy. You still can find Torrents for Movies and Software Serials & Crackz via Google - and Google Ads are often found on some less legal sites.

So Google loves to make a Public Stance against "bad Bills", but never was very respectful or concerned about protecting Content Creators Copyrights - although it has the Technology to filter illegal "Links" and Content (especially on YouTube).

Plus Google now also sells Music and Movies themselves. So they cater for legal and illegal Media needs.

------------------

How open is Google?

Mr Brin likes to talk about political Freedom and technical Openness in the same Context.

That makes him look like a Champion for Democracy and ... well ... Openness. But Google is anything but open ...

Google is notorious for it's Way to deal with Customers and User's alike.

Try finding a Telephone Number or eMail-Address for Support Line for almost any Google Products. Even the Support you can get via Google Groups is so deeply hidden in the Google Jungle most Nerds don't know it even exists ...

------------------

AdWords - What Google giveth and Google taketh away

Many small and medium Sites totally rely on making Money via Google AdWords.

Google has here absolute Dominance.

If some Google Algorithm decides you have cheated or abused the System Google closes down your Account for good.

It is almost impossible for small and medium Sites to reverse that Decision. It is not an open Process, getting to "talk" to a Human is "rare". Only big AdSellers get a "personal" Account Manager.

Google keeps all your current Profits and kicks you out of AdWords forever. There is no real Alternative to Google Search and Google AdWords.

This is an incredible and unchecked Power. Google uses the "open" Internet to build it's giant Index and sells Advertising with it's closed System. Google has created and controls this Market. Every time we Consumers use Google Search we cement that Dominance.

------------------

Your Google Account - What Google giveth and Google taketh away

The same Power applies to your Google Account, your eMails, social Connections and whatever Google Services you use. If for some Reasons Google closes your Account you have little Chance of re-opening it.

Once again, there is no Human Help or open Process available. Unless you drill very deep into Google's Support Jungle you won't find any Representative to talk to ...

Just imagine the Effect of a total Loss of your digital Life.

http://consumerist.com/2011/07/google-deletes-last-7-years-of-users-digital-life-shrugs.html

------------------

Social Networking - Google Style

Even on Google's Social Network you find no Support Group, no List of Community Managers (by Google) or Help-Chat or Help-Hangout.

Is that "Openness"? Is that social Behaviour? Is that the kind of Care and Attention Mr Brin speaks about when he talks about the Ways Governments don't care about Freedoms and Engagement with their Citizens?

On G+ we are your Citizens ... so how well are we cared for? How well can we participate? How open is Google when it changes our G+?

------------------

Mr Brin - the Hypocrite

"We push back a lot; we are able to turn down a lot of these requests. We do everything possible to protect the data. If we could wave a magic wand and not be subject to US law, that would be great. If we could be in some magical jurisdiction that everyone in the world trusted, that would be great … We're doing it as well as can be done."

It's always a good PR-Move to say you care and Point at the Abuse of Power - but please make your own Company more "open" and "human" before you point your golden Finger at others.

Show that you care by making Google a "People Company" and not just a Data Dump caring only for the Needs of Automatized Advertising.

Stop confusing what kind of Openness is a Benefit for Google with the Openness Private Citizens need.

And start talking to Customers and don't hide behind Algorithms, Databases and automated Scripts. You make enough Money to hire good People ...

Openness might mean for you two Machines communicating in Harmony, for the rest of us it means unhindered Communication from one Human Being to another ...
