That mucoid enteropathy struck again; I still haven't worked out what brings it on. I hoped the answer would be with offering rolled oats to kits along with their pelleted feed, but a couple of days ago, I found two 3 week old kits dead from it. I gave the others probiotics; it can't hurt, and it might help. Their dam doesn't milk real well, so perhaps the dead kits overate on pellets and oats.

The power of selection
Take this animal breeding principle, and apply it to other aspects of life. In this, my "second rabbit life," that began in October of 2012, I have noticed remarkable progress in the improvement of my herd of show rabbits, just through the process of selecting the parents of the next generation.

With the process of selection, one might use a rather large "filter" at the beginning. I was easier to please, because after all, "Rome wasn't built in a day." As I went along, I became more specific about which traits had to be present in a breeding prospect, and to what degree.

The process of selecting what we allow the mind to dwell upon might have similar results.

English Angora doe, "Tweety" has a litter of six. They are not very uniform and I fear the small ones will be unable to compete for milk. So, I will keep them in a little box in the house, and take them to the dam once a day to be nursed. That way, I can give the small ones a head start.

I am pleased that three of the kits are tortoiseshell like their mother, because that tells me that the sire, Wicket, carries tort as a recessive. Wicket is black, and this is his first litter. Wicket's sire could sire only black (or REW masking black), so I am pleased that Wicket can sire tort, which the judges seem to prefer.

This is Tweety's second litter. Her first is a litter of one, and he is now 8 weeks old, and sired by a different buck. I think he is very promising.

I will carry you.
"Some day, when my bones are weary with age and your arms are full of your own babies, or perhaps their babies, I will pull your wrinkling face to mine and whisper to you about how I carried you. Your fragile newborn self, your round-headed infant person, your laughing, squalling, joyful raging toddler limbs, your muscle and kicks and tears, your smooth-soled feet and your climbing fingers, the sweat of your curls on my back- I carried you. My whole heart and your whole being, wrapped to each other, I carried you. On the days we paced dismal in each other's failure, the days we climbed mountains, the days that were only just days- I carried you. I heard a stray or dumped cat meowing outside this morning; I tried to call it up, but I think it left. It would be welcome here, if it wanted to stay.

I have been upgrading my health habits over the past two weeks; I changed from synthroid for my Hashimoto's to a brand of natural dessicated thyroid, and I changed my diet to Paleo. I have lost some weight and have been feeling better overall. Today, however, I feel sleepy; probably has to do with the thyroid adjusting to the different medication.

I am waiting for an English Angora doe to deliver; she could have them any time. Her last litter was a singleton, but he is a real crackerjack. She is carrying a larger litter this time, by a different buck.

I am doing some more work on that Google Sheets Rabbitry pedigree generator; +Eric Poe was using it and has some good ideas for improvements for version 3, so we are working on it together.

I have a bunch of Angoras that I need to get sheared, and then bred. The senior members of the show string need to be sheared and retired to the breeding herd. I will keep the black doe, Raquel, and her REW sister, Bardot, in coat; they are only six months old, so by fall they ought to be in full, prime coat.

I have some babies coming along for the show string this fall, and I have begun getting them tattooed.

Raquel, six month old English Angora doe.
She was BISS in one of the two specialty shows last Friday night. Then in one of the two following all breed shows the next day, she placed 3rd in a class of 5; that is a example of how placings can vary from show to show and judge to judge. :-)

Raquel has earned enough legs to get granded, so I need to get her registered.

Mid America Angora Club specialty shows, June 12, Wichita, Kansas.
Show A:
Judge, Dan Daniels
BISS: Moirai Raquel, Black senior English Angora doe. BOS to her was her older fully brother, Wicket.

Show B:
Judge, Sara Michaud
BISS: Moirai Wicket, Black senior English Angora buck. Raquel was BOS.

Obviously, most of the entries were English Angoras. Sasha and John McPherson showed several Satin Angoras, and I don't remember for sure at the moment, which was BOB. Laurie Holden and I each showed a Giant Angora. There were no French Angoras in the show.

More international attention is needed to be focused on America's shameful culture of forced genital cutting of boys. Please help us shame this hospital and doctor into respecting 4 1/2 year old Chase Neus Hironimus' human and civil rights. Chase has said, "Don't let daddy cut my pee pee."

This is not a "fathers' rights" case; little Chase will grow up to become a man, and he has rights, too!

Cutting Chase

Chase - the young lad who has been in the news for quite some time now with regard to his father having him circumcised against both his and his mother's consent - is scheduled to be circumcised on Thursday, 11 June 2015 at the Joe DiMaggio Children's hospital in Hollywood, Florida.

The Hippocratic Oath has become a Hypocritic Oath.

Do. No. Harm.

All children have a right to bodily integrity: female, intersex, male - stop cutting children's genitals.

A new litter of 8 this morning, out of +The Kelfla Project's Hepburn!  Anyhow, with her litter last year, Hepburn dumped her 3 kids on the cage floor, and I fostered them to another doe. This time, she made a lovely nest and had all but one in it. I found one slightly chilled on the cage floor, but it is warmed up and fine now.

There are two black, two tortoiseshell, and four REW like the dam. I am especially hopeful that the torts turn out very good, because it is the color that the judges tend to prefer.

This is a repeat of the breeding that produced Moirai Kelpie, a multiple Best of Breed Grand Champion.

Heather Hironimus arrested! #i2   #circumcision   #savingchase
There, now don't you feel a whole lot safer? Wouldn't you like to know what she did that is so terrible?

She has tried to protect her nearly five year old son from being subjected to forced genital cutting. The Chase's Guardians Facebook page announced about 30 minutes ago that Heather has been arrested, and little Chase turned over to the monster who hates the little boy's whole, natural body, Dennis Nebus, the sperm donor who is misidentified as Chase's "father."

America! Where sociopaths collude to deprive innocent children of their whole bodies!  http://chasesguardians.org/wp/

Stop sexual assault of children!
Millions of children are sexually assaulted in America each year.
Most of these helpless, innocent victims of sexual assault are handed over for it by their own parents.

If you are an American, there is a fair chance that YOU are guilty of this vile human rights abuse, and you don't even know it. However, "when we know better, we can do better." Don't let your own pride, denial, and cognitive dissonance prevent you from doing better.

Opportunity for intactivist comments:

My comment (awaiting moderation):
Regarding human rights, Americans are hypocrites with regard to bodily autonomy. Although the US has a law against forced genital cutting of girls, it turns a blind eye towards the forced genital cutting of millions of baby boys each year. Many Europeans look at America's violation of infant boys with the same horror that Americans have towards countries where cutting of girls is commonplace.

I am still having occasional problems with weanlings turning up with enteritis. Luckily, I caught the latest two cases quickly enough that doses of simethicone and loperamide (Imodium) shut it down. I also withdrew all pelleted food and am giving them only plain grass hay. When I start them back on pelleted feed, I will go very slowly.

I had already changed my feeding of weanlings, several months ago, allowing each only 1/2 cup of pelleted feed daily along with as much grass hay as they want. Now I wonder if I should reduce the pelleted feed some more. What do you think?

If they were being raised for meat, the restricted pelleted feed would not be good because of the resulting slow-down in growth. But for fancy show rabbits, it doesn't matter.

I've been trying off and on for a couple of months to get Wicket, a young senior buck, to breed a doe. He would hop on, pump a bit, and then just give up. He didn't have that extra "oomph" to drive it home, knowwaddamean? Well, he bred a doe for me today. And that's what it takes to make me happy. :-D

I've been excited about Wicket since he was two weeks old. Colleen Boyd had said that you can tell which kits will have exceptional wool density, because at two weeks of age, when you rub your hand over their fur backwards, it will feel like the fur of a Rex. Wicket and his brother Weechee had that. Weechee might have even better density than Wicket, but Wicket has the better body type.

I'm waiting for a first time mother to kindle today. She has me a bit worried because she moved a lot of the nesting material to the cage floor. I will just have to check on her frequently; I have scooped up newborns from the cage floor before. There is baby saver wire, so at least I know they can't drop onto the building floor.

Google Sheets
I figured out how to do some slightly more sophisticated stuff. I had made a rabbit database and pedigree generator that loads pedigrees dynamically from a dropdown selection list. Each animal has an ID number, and the first version had the ID and the name as separate columns, so a new user might mistakenly select the name instead of the number needed to trigger the pedigree.

I wrote a query that concatenated ID and name fields, for the dropdown display. Then for the cell holding the selected ID number, I put in simple code that extracts the ID number from the text string selection. I enjoyed finding an elegant solution.

I had started a similar project in PHP and Mysql that would be easier and more flexible, but I have found Google Sheets to be a lot of fun. It is interesting to see what can be done within the constraints.

A litter of 5 English Angoras today, out of "Have Angora," by "Drury." Both sire and dam are tortoiseshells, so of course all the kits are torts. Well, maybe not "of course," except it seems that the sire does not carry REW as a recessive.

This is a second litter for this doe, and she is again a really good mom. Her daughter from a litter last fall has done well for me at shows.

Using Google Sheets like a flat file database for dynamic pedigree generation.
Rabbitry database and pedigree generator on Google Sheets. Free and suitable for small to medium rabbitries. I did this mostly to satisfy my curiosity as to how Google Sheets can be used like a flat file database. Enter a rabbit once, and the generations of the pedigree are auto-filled. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pme1IDBzsQtjtV8TdoyGntGE3k4w2Rvy_IrGr0oG22w/edit#gid=689680029

My rabbit registrations are caught up to date. Every senior rabbit I have is registered. I mailed off several leg papers for Grand Champion certificates. At the show last weekend, I had the Registrar register 4 more rabbits, and when those are processed, I can get a couple of those rabbits granded. Registration and granding isn't necessary, but adds to the enjoyment of the hobby. Besides, the ARBA certificates are beautiful.

I have a beautiful senior buck in full show coat that I would love to breed. He attempts to breed does, but doesn't have that extra "push" to get the job done; I think his heavy coat deters him. I don't want to shear him until after a specialty show in June. So, I will shear and use his brother instead. The brother has even better wool, but not nearly as good body type. I think as long as I breed does to him that have good type and a common ancestor with... more »

I heard from the owner of "Holly" yesterday that she won 4 class at a rabbit show in Illinois on Saturday. This makes 5 Best of Breed English Angoras in the litter. One sister in Alabama (Mariah) owned by Jennifer Hornsby is a BOB winner, one sister in Florida (Marcella) owned by Shellie Ross is a BOB winner, the sister I kept (Muri) is a BOB winner, and the brother owned by Laurie Holden in Missouri (Drury) is a BOB winner.

They are from an accidental littermates breeding I did last fall. I forgot that the doe and buck were brother and sister; I was thinking they were half-siblings. They turned out so well, I am thinking about repeating the breeding. I think the key factor is that the sire and dam were each very correct rabbits.

I suppose everyone uses professional rabbitry software, but just in case this is of interest...I use Google Sheets for keeping track of rabbit breeding dates, because then the information is accessible via mobile also. My spreadsheet automatically calculates the dates for palpating, nestbox, due date, and late date. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n7E7mFCBF-FgedteSuZRcRmh8fi7509x9Hf7t6nDWO4/edit?usp=sharing

I went through the entire herd yesterday, giving the monthly doses of Ivomec. With Angora rabbits, one has to be vigilant for fur mites, which will destroy a coat before you even realize the mites have gotten established. I was very unhappy to find that one little junior doe had developed a case of mites while I wasn't watching; so, I had to scratch her off the list to take to shows this spring. She can grow her coat out and go show in the fall.

In the plus column, her littermate who had been chewing her coat (which is often a sign that mites are settling in, even before you can see the other signs) has stopped and her coat is recovering nicely.

I cared for an injured friend's rabbits for six months. Yesterday, another friend and I made the 5 1/2 hour trip to return them to her. There are a couple of her rabbits that I fell in love with and will miss very much. On the plus side, I now have a bunch of empty cages.
