The Cross Keys - Norton Fitzwarren

Following the terrible floods of 2012, the Cross Keys has undergone extensive refurbishment. The Pub itself is only a short distance from the 40 commando marine camp , and the village of Norton Fitzwarren.

The Blackbrook Tavern

Just off Junction 25 of the M5 here in Somerset is the Blackbrook Tavern. Last time we went there for one of their Carvery meals... the food was cold and really quite poor, but they may have upped their game.

Iggle's been hunting.... Again

Just go back from a little trip out to get some fresh air to find that the cat has been hunting again and brought another "Gift" back.... this time we heard the sparrow cheeping away in one of the upstairs rooms.

The Sparrow was rescued and is currently in an outbuilding recovering.. no idea yet on how bad it may be damaged, but it's still moving around

Princes Royal

Very topical at the moment, with The Duchess of Cambridge ready to produce the future King or Queen next month and her launching a cruise ship this week, called "The Princess Royal"....

I give you the pub by the same name, in Taunton, within walking distance of both Somerset County Cricket Club and also Taunton town centre, the Princess Royal is a traditional, family run pub.

Castle Green Pub
This hostelry is situated opposite Taunton Castle (hence the name!!) and next to the Castle Hotel, it's had many names over the years, but thankfully they've decided to give it a name reflecting it's position.

I need to dig deeper into the history of this building but it looks like it used to house the carriages and horses when they visited the castle and castle hotel.

The Greyhound Inn

The Greyhound Inn nestles in the charming little hamlet of Staple Fitzpaine approx 6 miles outside of Taunton and dates from early C19. 
If you hear the merry laughter of the Grey Lady in the bar of The Greyhound Inn it just might be the inns resident ghost.

The Taunton public library was opened here in 1905, to the design of architect Alexander Little of London and part funded by the Carnegie Foundation. It remained the town’s library until 1996 when its conversion to a public house raised some eyebrows, due to the covenant applied by the Carnegie Foundation, that alcohol must not be consumed on the premises!

The Master Thatcher

Established in 1996, the purpose built, two-storey public house occupies a central location. Inside, the open plan pub and restaurant area is traditional in design with wooden beamed ceilings, exposed stonewalls and a feature fireplace.

Upstairs on the first floor is our fully furnished function suite that presents a bar servery, dance floor and DJ Booth.

The quintessential English Cottage

Whilst I went out for a small drive this afternoon, (It helps with the bending of the knee ) I spotted this cottage bedecked in a range of floral attributes.

It appealed to me and reminded me of the typical Old English Village

Maypole Inn - Thurloxton

Originally named the Star Inn, the Maypole Inn dates back to 1880, when it was under the ownership of William Day. The Star Inn was originally a Cider House and remained so until the mid 1970's when The Green Dragon, the Public house in Thurloxton, closed. The Star therefore took on the role of being the village pub although, strictly speaking, it is located in the village of Adsborough and not Thurloxton.

The Old Port

Here is the Old Port in Motreal, Canada. It stretches for over two kilometres along the St-Lawrence River in Old Montreal. It was used as early as 1611, when French fur traders as a trading post.

You can't keep a good photographer down

I shot this from my seat on the sofa, where I've been living these past four weeks.... The Knee is healing nicely... slow progress but healing... 

So I saw this Rose was open this morning, probably due to the really nice sunny day outside. I had my camera delivered to me and shot through the window. What I didn't notice until I put it into Lightroom was the green bugs on the petals, having a picnic!! see the right hand side... zoom in

New photography focus - The traditional Pub Sign

This is going to be my new theme once I get back on my feet, hopefully in a few weeks, as I don't think the sofa can take much more of my arse on it..

Pub signs are awesome, they hold so much history and are often highly detailed and intricate designs. This makes for an interesting subject. In the current economic climate where 26 pubs a week are shutting it seems fitting to make a documentary of Olde English pubs before they are all gone.

In 1393 King Richard II compelled landlords to erect signs outside their premises. The legislation stated "Whosoever shall brew ale in the town with intention of selling it must hang out a sign, otherwise he shall forfeit his ale." Murder in the Night

I came down this morning and found this corpse waiting for me with the cat and two dogs looking very pleased with themselves.....

I guess the cat brought it in during the night and played with it before the dogs got hold of it.. Look at that rug.... those dogs are shedding their winter coats quicker than we can hoover the damn stuff up!!!!

I'm still sat here on the sofa, the knee is still healing, and I still can't get out shoot some of my own images, so I shall continue to bring you the best that I find.

Is it Summer Time?

Usually May is a time to think of sunshine and trips to the beach, it seems someone has failed to tell nature that it's Summer-time. This week we are expecting strong winds and rain with temp as low as 8c

Larry the Lamb
Just going through some older photos whilst sat here on the sofa getting bored by the minute.... One thing we have a lot of around here is agriculture and farm animals, it's always a pleasure to go out and shoot some cows or sheep, they make interesting subjects, just like this little chap.

I'm back home now, they took most of the kneecap away and wired remains to the fibula before attaching tendons to the remaining kneecap.... Hurts like he'll at present now General Anaesthetic has worn off, and the femoral block has worn off.
