Sorry! :)At nearly 1000, my art circle is bursting at the seams. It's too big to share on it's own anymore, so I thought I'd break it down into several smaller circles, to share over a period of days. These people fill my streams with visual imagery, sometimes beautiful, experimental, evocative... each one has a unique perspective and practice. Most of these people are painters, drawers, illustrators, sculptors, etc. (I generally keep my photogs in a separate circle, with a few exceptions, for good measure. So yes, this circle is a different beast.)The desire to connect with other artists is what brought me to G+, and it is a huge part of why I am still here.**************************************************************************A note about this circle, and my sharing it.Every time I share a circle, I get a backlash of anger from people that are not in it. Honestly, it is to the point that I rarely share circles. Please know that this circle is not all of the artists that you should be following here on Google+, it is simply the artists that I follow. I have chosen them for personal reasons, and enjoy following each of them. I am sharing them because I believe that you may also enjoy following them. This circle reflects my choices, of whom to follow, please be respectful of that. If you are an artist, and not in my circles, please feel free to say hi and let me know in the comments, so that I can mosey on over to your profile and see your work! #art #creativity #sharedcircles  2012-08-17 16:56:459712313

I often talk about what it means to me to curate a theme and how I view things. To me, the best themes are the ones that have highly interactive curators. The vast majority also have a page to compliment their theme. A theme page is a great place for the curators to share information about the theme and to list the name or names of the people currently curating the theme. IMHO, a good theme page should provide information about the theme, how to participate, and who is curating the theme. There are many themes that were created and then abandoned by their creator so I wanted to know, "Which themes rock?". I asked the G+ community to tell me which themes have highly interactive curators and an active community. This circle is based on community feedback and my personal view of what it means to have a theme that rocks.A good place to start if you are new to themes is perhaps the about page of +Monochrome Monday or the about page of +Daily Fine Art Themes.  This circle is part of an ongoing series and will eventually include, "Charles Lupica's guide to themes on G+™".*If there are any themes that you feel rock that aren't mentioned, be sure to add a comment to this post, include the name of the theme, what day of the week the theme takes place or daily, the name of the page, and the name of the curators.  If there is no page, please state this.  Themes without a page are less likely to be listed but some very interactive themes don't have a page.* *Because of the limitation put on posts by Google Plus, the curator names will not be hot linked nor will the page names.  Sorry if this causes an inconvenience but only 100 links can be put into a post and this one contains close to 300.* Let's rock.Sunday• Dawn on Sunday  #dawnOnSunday  +Dawn On Sunday  +Ray Bilcliff +Sherry McBriar • Sacred Sunday  #sacredSunday  +SacredSunday™  +Charles Lupica +Manfred Berndtgen +Margaret Tompkins +Robyn Morrison +Sherrie von Sternberg  • Selfless Sunday  #selflessSunday +#SelflessSunday Theme on G+    +Jeffrey Sullivan • Sentimental Sunday  #sentimentalSunday +Sentimental Sunday Theme   +Louisa Catharine Forsyth• Sign Sunday  #signSunday +Sign Sunday +Jonathan Davis +Lori Carey • Sky Sunday  #SkySunday +Sky Sunday - Photography Theme  +Randy Scherkenbach +Patrick Scherkenbach • *Zen Sunday*   #zenSunday +Zen Sunday +Charlotte Therese Björnström +Simon Kitcher +Nathan Wirth  ────────Monday• Backyard Birding Monday  #backyardBirdingMonday +Backyard Birding Monday #BackyardbirdingMonday   +Celeste Odono +Ricky L Jones• DOF Monday (Depth of Field)  #DOFMonday +DOFMonday +Mara Acoma +L2012-06-06 17:32:51260927778

Melanie MP14,009.Please share!I have often seen the circles are shared with female photographers but still no circle with only male photographers. For me this is not equality. Equality means to treat me the same.So I have all the men and women separated from photographers circles and share my now 3 men and one women's circle with you. So once the men have their owncircles.I hope it will soon be more women, so I can make them 3 circuits. Here are included only photographers who actively participate in this year were or are.Errors are possible. There were so many ....And here is the women's circle (A to Z) Ich habe oft gesehen das Kreise mit weiblichen Fotografen geteilt werden aber noch keinen Kreis mit nur Männlichen Fotografen.
I have finally put together my 1st circle of photographers that I personally find inspiring. Nearly every genre of photography is represented here. These are individuals that are constantly providing photography work that speaks to me. They are hand picked and all active on G+. It includes full time professionals and amatures alike...all that create compelling photography. Everyone in this circle has less then 30k followers (although a few are very very close) and many have just a few hundred. Please enjoy...I know I have!If you like what you find in this circle, please share it with your followers to help these individuals reach a wider audience. I will share more circles of those I find Inspiring in the future." (by Colby Brown)2012-03-04 12:50:38501117

Christy Ramsey10,583G+ Awesome Chicks Circle #1Did you know, as of right now, the Google+ user base is only 30% female? I recently posted a thread proposing that I wanted to create a circle of Awesome G+ Chicks. I was DELIGHTED AND AMAZED at the response I got in just 24 hours! In fact, there were too many recommendations to fit into one circle! These two circles are filled with women from all kinds of backgrounds, hobbies, careers, interests, etc. There are artists, photographers, geeks, techies, mothers, wives, writers, entrepreneurs, executives, nurses, cooks, podcasters...anything you can possibly think of! They were all recommended by someone and are all awesome!I've met some great ladies through this experiment and hope to get to know so many of them!2012-02-24 14:44:3229210374132
Mike Shaw721,375Your Recommendations CircleI have been putting this circle together from people that you recommend and I said that when it hit 500 I would share it again, its not all photography based and each member at the time of being added had less than 30,000 followers.Admissions to the circle are now closed but I hope you enjoy the mix of people that are here, thank you to all that recommended and there are a few that I have included as well.2012-02-22 18:33:0050012676137
Nikon Shooters2,897Nikon Shooters Circle 1The Nikon Shooters Circles and Page continues to grow. We now have over 2800 members! There are now 6 Nikon Shooter circles. There's a 500 person for adding people to your circles each day, so we've limited the circles to 450 each so they're easy to share and to add to your circles. There's no difference between any of the circles. To be included one of the Nikon Shooter circles, you must first add the Nikon Shooters page to your circles. (That's a G+ rule for pages, a page cannot add you to their circles unless they're already in your circles.) Once you do that, you'll be added to our circles. The page can be found here: https://plus.google.com/b/114191697554873400049/114191697554873400049Once you circle that page, you'll be added to the Nikon Shooter circles. Since you can't add 2800 people at once, we'll publish the circles on a one per day basis. I'll go through them all, then start over with the first one. #Nikon, #Photography , #Camera2012-02-22 15:08:16449715

Billy Wilson30,060Interactive People on G+: Part OneYesterday I asked people who they thought was the most interactive person they have found on G+ and I got a lot of responses. Since people from many different communities responded I ended up with a sampling of people from across a lot of the G+ world. Since there was interest in having a circle created of the people nominated in my threads I made this circle. I'm still working through all of the nominations and will have another circle ready once I'm done working through my threads. You can still nominate people on this post: https://plus.google.com/105706178492556563330/posts/bTjXGJcRNcK The original post hit the 500 comment maximum. You can also nominate on this circle share post as well. #CircleShare2012-01-31 20:54:52501249133190

Jeff Sullivan41,837The Net Effect of Circle SharingAny time you have the release of such large circles totaling 1500 community members from one with over 880,000 contacts, there will probably be discussions on the pros and cons of circle sharing. At a high level, he added 22,000 contacts yesterday, but if even 500 of his contacts added the circles, 750,000 new connections were made in the community, more than he'll add in a month. I added 500 yesterday, and the 500 people not in his circle shares before probably added much more (so that's a highly conservative estimate). We could second-guess the process, but overall, the community is the beneficiary. Now clearly there are more people which should be recognized and included in circle shares, and many more topics than photography as well, so what I'd like to suggest is that others follow this example and similarly "pay it forward" to the community. Share your own circles, to continue and broaden the interconnection process within the community. Let's make tomorrow a #CircleSharingSunday !What do you think?-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*+Thomas Hawk * - Yesterday 10:16 AM (edited) - Public*1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (P-Z, Part 3 of 3) *1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (A-G, Part 1 of 3) http://goo.gl/WGdFw1,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (G-O, Part 2 of 3) http://goo.gl/1yiS61,500 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+ (P-Z, Part 3 of 3) http://goo.gl/6nLZEI've shared my photographers circle on Google+ two times now. Once when it got to 500 and then again when it got to 1,000. Today my circle hit 1,500 so I'm sharing them again.I have to break them up into 500 person circles because this is the limit on Google+. Also Google limits the number of people you can add to circles per day so I'm going to publish my kick ass photographers circle over 3 days. Today I'm publishing A-G. Tomorrow I'll publish G-O. Friday I'll publish P-Z. By last name.In addition to the kick ass photographers in these circles I've also added three other accounts. Our new photography hangout show which will be on live tonight at 8PM PST +Photo Talk Plus as well as our show's sponsors +Drobo and +SmugMug as a way of saying thanks to them.A few notes about these circles. not to be long-winded, but…Every time I've shared my circles I've gotten haters from it. People who are upset that they are not in them. I absolutely detest that. It makes me not even want to share them because of that. These circles are not meant to be the definitive list of what photographers you should be following on Google+. These circles are simply who I have chosen to follow for photography on Google+ for my own personal consumption. I want to share them because I think YOU may also benefit from having these rich, talented, kick ass photographers in your streams. This is the circle that I browse every single day looking for great stuff to +1 and comment on Google+ and as such it reflects my own personal biases. For example. I hate looking at watermarks. This is a personal preference thing. If you use them, more power to you. It's absolutely your right. But as a consumer of photography I find them ugly and distracting and so I tend not to follow people who use them. This is not a big deal. This is not a personal attack against you if you watermark. I apologize for my absence. Finally back from a...er... semi-vacation. Well, two conferences back to back in a fun part of the world.

I ran out at the end of a conference to play at the happiest place on earth. Not as entertaining as it was when I was 12 but it still holds lots of surprises. Certainly has lots of photographic opportunities. :)

I still love the look of Cinderella's castle. ♥ all those beautiful turrets ♥

Dichotomy

The Transamerica Pyramid seems to just split this image right down the middle. Tall buildings and bright lights to the left, and what looks like incoming storm clouds to the left. I really didn't ask the fog to come in the way it did. Really, I didn't.

The Transamerica Pyramid was the tallest building west of the Mississippi between 1972-1974 at 850 ft tall, surpassing the Bank of America building a few blocks away.

Ridges

Isn't it interesting to think that without contrast our cameras could not function? Without contrast, my camera has no idea where to focus. What about our own lives? Does the contrast between the happy and unhappy moments in our lives serve as a way for us to focus as well? Do our moments of triumph and sadness swirl together to create a beautiful painting on our canvas of life?

Thank you curators!!

Shapes
by Shel Silverstein

A square was sitting quietly
Outside his rectangular shack
When a triangle came down -- kerplunk! --
"I must go to the hospital,"
Cried the wounded square,
So a passing rolling circle
Picked him up and took him there.

Ok, last one from the San Francisco Chinese New Year parade; the San Francisco Symphony float!

Ok, I have to ask since I really don't know (& I'm embarrassed that I don't know). Who are these guys? I see drawings of the one in front all the time on Chinese goods. I can only assume he represents long life and wisdom, but I'm not positive about that. What's with the gourd flask?

I assume the one in the green hat represents fertility and prosperity? I didn't get a photo of the third guy behind the one with the peach.

Stone Monkey

Ok, I'll admit it. I'm posting this one mostly because it amused me. These are characters from one of the greatest Chinese classic novels, Journey to the West aka The Stone Monkey.

It amuses me to see characters set 1500 years ago come to life in the middle of downtown San Francisco. On stilts.

Mazu

April of last year I was in Taiwan watching a procession of Mazu followers celebrate her birthday. It surprised me to see the same god figures parading down Market Street during the Chinese New Year parade. It surprised me to learn that there was a Mazu temple here in the US as well.

Mazu is the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. Legend has it (well, this is the version I'm familiar with) that her family lived by the sea and her father and brother, as well as all the local men, were fisherman by trade. One night when she was a girl there was a particularly nasty storm. Fearing that her father and brother might lose their way, she threw on a coat and hat, grabbed a lantern and ran up to a cliff overlooking the beach. One by one fishermen arrived on the beach and said to her, "If it were not for the lantern you were holding up so vigilantly, we would have lost... more »

One by one fishermen arrived on the beach and said to her, "If it were not for the lantern you were holding up so vigilantly, we would have lost our way." Soon her father and his crew arrived and similarly gave her their thanks. However, by daybreak her brother had yet to return. For the next few nights she would stand at the cliff with the lantern held high awaiting his return. Villagers said to her, "Lin Mo Niang (what she was called back then), your brother will not return. Give it up." Still she stubbornly held up that lantern through the nights, refusing to give up hope.

Years passed and every night she would hold up the lantern for her brother and in the process, guided fishermen back to the village.

Lin Mo Niang passed away at a relatively early age (<30) and was given the name "Mazu" and promoted to deity status. Both the Taoists and Buddhists celebrate Mazu but they have their own rendition of how she fits into their religion.___

Baby Dragon

Counterpoint to my last post, this is perhaps the smallest dragon I've seen in a Chinese parade. There must have been five milling about.

Ok, 1...2...3... everyone say "awwww!"

Lion on the loose!

This must be the largest Chinese lion I've ever seen. It was the finale of the San Francisco Chinese New Year parade. The head had to be supported by five people and the body by 20. I was sort of out in the middle of the street when it came charging at me. Ahhhh!

For +Serge Ivanov and his new night time Chinatown obsession :)

Cherry Blossoms Adrift

Pink petals passing
Scents above so high
Painted porcelain perfection
Blossoms caress the sky

Swaying silent shroud
Suitors strolling by
Pink petals passing
Lover's gentle sigh

Pastel hues falling
Slow fluttering grace
Pink petals passing
Lining streams in lace

Pink petals passing
Smoothest transit by
Soft essence floating
In most subtle lullaby

Inducing springtime slumber
Upon a satin shore
Sailing with the current
Pink petals pass before

Alcatraz & Coit Tower

The big glowy thing is Coit Tower, the island is Alcatraz, up further is Angel Island (the chunk of land that isn't lit) and behind that (where the lights are) is probably Marin, perhaps the Tiburon area.

Coit Tower
Was commissioned by Lillie Coit, a wealthy socialite who liked to assist with volunteer firefighters since she was 15. She was known for being eccentric, smoking cigars and wearing trousers before it was socially acceptable for women to do so. She would also dress up like a man so that she could get into gambling establishments.

There are a multitude of brightly painted buildings in Chinatown. I suspect it has more to do with attracting tourists than it has to do with any sort of tradition.

Eagles and Lions and Shadows oh my!

This is the old SF Federal Reserve Bank Building (aka The Bently Reserve). The Federal Reserve Bank moved operations a few blocks away in 1983 and sold off this building to Bently Holdings who rents out this location for events. I have not seen the interior but from what I've heard, it's fantabulous!

A hair out of place

Two pieces of string walk into a bar and the bartender looks at them suspiciously. He says "Sorry, boys, we don't serve your kind here." So the pieces of string walk out again.

They're sitting in the gutter outside and feeling really thirsty when one piece of string says "Hey! I've got an idea to get me into the bar."

So he starts twisting and turning, wriggling this way and that, pulling out a few threads here and there. His mate's looking at him and thinks he's gone completely nuts.

Then the piece of string walks back into the bar. The bartender looks at him a little suspiciously again and says "Here, you're not a bit of string, are you?"

The piece of string replies "No, I'm a frayed knot."

Belden Lane

This is a tiny street (1 block long) in the financial district of SF lined with French and Italian restaurants one side and efficiencies on the other. There's plenty of outdoor seating with umbrellas and heat lamps if that tickles your fancy. One of my favorites is Plouf which is known for their heaping bowls of mussels. http://www.ploufsf.com/03_lunch_01.html. I need to go back to Cucina Italiana to remind myself what their tiramisu tastes like. Yeah, I've totally forgotten. Really.

The office building in the back is the Bank of America Center which is the second tallest building in the city.

For +Serge Ivanov 's NEON obsession ;)
And +Jessica Gray because there's Plouf in it. :D

What is this stuff?

There's sheets of this stuff screwed onto the walls on the upper half of my daughter's school multipurpose (cafeteria/auditorium). Anyone know what it is and what purpose it serves besides adding texture to the walls? They're like sheets of drywall and maybe an inch thick or so. I can't imagine these staying clean if they were up at my old elementary school where the kids threw food at the walls and ceiling to see what would stick. Cheese cubes sticks very well, btw. So do paper towels soaked in milk. Bleh!

Sky and Sea

As I sat in the beach,
the sky cried a speech
about beauty,
and the art of a smile
the sea did agree,
and it swam to my toes
where I listened to it all,
with curiosity

the sea breathed in deep
when the sky said "The end"
I imagined that both the sea and the sky
were long time friends
that year after year,
they'd discus life and sing a many too song
So, still I sat in the sand watching their connection,
and rain fell into the sea
The sea and I clapped our hands,
its waves roared in laughter
and the sky,
went purple, pink, and blushed

I'm so glad, that the sea and sky,
let me listen to thoughts on that night

The Impossible Dream of the Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico

Joshua Abraham Norton 1819-1880 (aka Emperor Norton) is perhaps one of the most colorful characters of San Francisco history. He was lured to California during the Gold Rush and became a wealthy businessman before losing everything trying to corner the rice market. After disappearing for a few years, he reappeared and proclaimed himself "Emperor of the United States." Beloved by the San Franciscans, he was allowed to issue his own currency (which was accepted by local merchants) and politicians had to seek his approval or risk political suicide. His funeral was attended by 10,000-20,000 locals, businesses closed for the day and flags were flown at half mast. When his remains were moved in 1934, businesses again closed and flags flown at half mast. The ceremony had an attendance of 60,000 and the ceremony featured full military honors.

Besides dissolving the US Congress, declaring sexism illegal, and combating racism, one of his strokes of genius included commanding that a bridge be built from Oakland to San Francisco. He wrote:
"The following is decreed and ordered to be carried into execution as soon as convenient: I. That a suspension bridge be built from Oakland Point to Goat Island and thence to Telegraph Hill; provided such bridge can be built without injury to navigable waters of the Bay of San Francisco. II. That the Central Pacific Railroad Company be granted franchises to lay down tracks and run cars from Telegraph Hill and along the city front to Mission Bay".

Peter Moylan of Encyclopedia of San Francisco writes:

How prescient was Emperor Norton? 64 years later, the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge opened, a suspension bridge that passes through what we today call Yerba Buena Island, but in 1872 was Goat Island. The double decked freeway that once lined the Embarcadero from the foot of Broadway (at the base of Telegraph Hill) south to Mission Bay was officially part of the bridge!

All hail Emperor Norton!

My Shadow

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow—
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an india-rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that there's none of him at all.

He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he's a coward you can see;
I'd think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.

To your health, wealth, happiness and security!

I am dedicating this photo to an outstanding member of the g+ community, +Charles Lupica. I think there are few people in the photo community who have not come across this gentleman who has done so much, curated so many themes and just seemed to be everywhere at once. Some of us suspect that he's superman's alter ego, but that's a theory to test another day. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to co-curate the #FoodFriday theme with him these past couple of months and wish him the best as he involves himself in other projects.

Since I don't drink, I will raise one of these locks up to you +Charles Lupica and attach it to the handrails of the stairway known as life. To your health, wealth, happiness and security, sir! Thank you for all you have done and continue to do!

Purple with Pink Polka-dots

Well, that's what I told my daughter what color dinosaurs were. Hey, you can't disprove it.

That's a pier...uh...Pier 5 I think. I lost track of the numbers. The land you see is Treasure Island which used to be a military base. Beyond that is fog and behind the fog is the Oakland Hills in the East Bay. It was amazing to me that the fog was all east of Treasure Island.

This is my absolute favorite time to take long exposure photos - when the sky is blueish-purple and the clouds are pink. The pinker the better. I'm still a girly girl at heart. Unfortunately the colors only last 10 minutes if that. Phooey.

Oh wow! +Colby Brown shared a circle of recommended photographers with a following of under 30k. There are some great people for inspiration when you have a creative block. Amazed and honored that I was included. A bit giddy too :D ...and perhaps explains why my gmail account has exploded. o_O

COLBY'S PHOTOGRAPHIC CIRCLE OF INSPIRATION

I have finally put together my 1st circle of photographers that I personally find inspiring. Nearly every genre of photography is represented here. These are individuals that are constantly providing photography work that speaks to me. They are hand picked and all active on G+. It includes full time professionals and amatures alike...all that create compelling photography. Everyone in this circle has less then 30k followers (although a few are very very close) and many have just a few hundred. Please enjoy...I know I have!

If you like what you find in this circle, please share it with your followers to help these individuals reach a wider audience. I will share more circles of those I find Inspiring in the future.___Oh wow! +Colby Brown shared a circle of recommended photographers with a following of under 30k. I love My City!

There's so many things to photograph in the city of San Francisco. The red and gold lights were a tribute to our beloved 49ers but shhh! Don't tell anyone, but I think it's also for the Chinese New Year. :D

[P]ort of San Francisco
This is the San Francisco Ferry Building which was the second busiest ferry terminal in the world in the late 1800's/early 1900's. Right after the great 1906 SF earthquake, the fire marshall gave directives to "save the ferry building" at all costs. He foresaw that this building was the only way in and out of the city.

This building doesn't actually sit on land; it's built on a bunch of pylons that are anchored in the sand and mud below. After the 1989 earthquake divers inspected each of the pylons and found one to be warped to the extreme but it was unclear if the damage was... more »

Today the ferry building houses offices and a popular marketplace.

Coit Tower
In the background to the right is Coit Tower built in 1933 under the direction of Lillie Hichcock Coit to "beautify the city." Coit was a wealthy socialite and honorary firefighter. Contrary to popular belief the tower was not designed to look like a fire hose nozzle.

Sani ethnic group singer in the Yunnan Stone Forest in China, a couple hours ride east from Kunming. I usually prefer tightly cropped portraits, but I really love the detail on her clothing.

Our day spent in the Stone Forest was the first day it stopped raining in two weeks which also meant that it was the first day in half a month the performers got to do their thing. Fortune smiled upon us, that's for sure!

You know what? I'm not sure if I posted any photos of the Stone Forest itself. I need to fix that.

Light & Shadow

Ok, I admit it. I was a bad Asian yesterday. Instead of cooking a dinner large enough to feed an army, we just went out to a Chinese restaurant. This is equivalent to going out to (pick your favorite restaurant) for dinner on Thanksgiving. Ah well. I guess I need to surrender my Asian Membership Card.
My excuse was that I was at a conference all weekend long and finally got out at 5pm yesterday.

This was taken at Ming's Restaurant in Concord, California.

Cave of Wonders

I had a difficult time choosing which photo to submit, but in the end I settled on this one, though it seems people seem to have varying opinions on this particular image. I am amused by the fact that it takes a little while to figure out what this subject is. Is it upside down? Is it a cave in a glacier? A crystal cavern? Is this a painting or a photo?

No, it's not upside down and this photo was taken at the Reed Flute Cave in Guilin, China so called because of the reeds that grow outside the cave. Yup, you guessed it; people made flutes out of the reeds. The lighting is artificial and cycles through various colors.

Slow shutter speeds and tripod absolutely required for this shot. :)

Year of the Dragon

When I was little I was told that dragons ruled water which meant they lived in rivers, lakes, oceans and in the clouds. This coming year is the year of the water dragon. I really have no idea what the element component does except give the zodiac symbol a 60-year cycle.

Another thing I was told is that a family is considered very, very lucky if there are three members who are dragons. Get ready for a baby boom this year.
