Justin Hill22,577338 Photographers :- Due to a post I saw float past in my stream today I am suddenly aware of the fact that I have not shared any of my circles for a very long time. So to rectify that here's my circle of photographers. If you are missing from this circle you are most probably in my other photography circle that is HDR based...if you are also missing from that one then I am sorry as I simply cannot add everyone that crosses my path or stream. Enjoy...2013-10-11 14:09:1333813411CC G+

Fraser Cain779,548Super Science Circle - May 2013 EditionNeed more science in your Google+? Well, here's all the science you can handle! Enjoy my latest, heavily curated edition of the Super Science Circle. Please share this circle... for Science! For the uninitiated, I maintain a circle of 450+ people who are active on Google+ and regularly post on Google+. In this circle you'll find scientists, journalists, astronauts, educators, and science enthusiasts. By importing this circle into your own circles, you'll immediately gain a vibrant and fascinating feed of amazing science stories.I recognize that it might be too much science, so I suggest you create a brand new temporary circle and evaluate the people in the circle. Only transfer the keepers to your permanent circles. Then, when I update the circle next month, rinse and repeat. Are you active on G+ and regularly post about science? +mention me and I'll check out your profile.Remember, please share this post2013-05-22 19:26:51456348390CC G+

Fraser Cain770,050Super Science Circle - April 2013 EditionIt's time for another sharing of my Super Science Circle. This is a collection of 400+ active people on Google+ who often post about science. If anyone tells you G+ is a ghost town (not that anyone does any more), get them to import this circle. PLEASE SHARE THIS CIRCLE... FOR SCIENCE!I have personally reviewed each and every person on this list, to make sure that they:1. Are active and engaged on Google+2. Regularly post science-related stories on Google+In this list you'll find scientists, journalists, researchers, professors, astronauts and general science enthusiasts. Not everyone in this list is going to be to your personal liking. So what you'll want to do is import the list into a temporary circle. Then move people over one by one into more permanent locations in your circles.I'm always looking for more people to add to the list, so if you know people who meet my criteria, feel free to nominate them.Again, please share the circle. Every little bit helps2013-04-26 21:02:03419226277CC G+

Gailen Mapes26,221Hand Picked Photographers Circles - "Unknown or Other" Camera A-F - 11 of 14Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 500 members.I am now sharing one circle per day, for the reason see:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/posts/RrPNTzHhQuHAs before these circles are photographers that I admire. They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to April 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting March 15th.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday #handpickedcircles   #sharedcircles #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle2013-04-11 10:58:3937616213CC G+

Sumit Sen57,209A Circle ShareCircle sharing by individuals seems to passé these days, and most shares are curated circles put together on some general basis by a few. That suits me fine because I am not fashionable and pretty faded! :)This circle is not one which contains all my best friends here or all the folks whose photography I really admire. It contains members who are my engagement set. People who follow my posts and people whose posts appear on my stream on a regular basis. Part of the selection has to do with Gplus's stream feed algorithm and part of it has to do with time zones. But these 200 are part of my life on GPlus now and I meet them virtually almost everyday.I am sharing this list mainly for the benefit of my new followers who are looking for worthwhile additions to their circles. Fraser Cain759,117The Return of the Super Science CircleOkay, I'll admit, I made a mistake in retiring the Super Science Circle. I wasn't wrong; Communities are still the future and the best way to make friends here on Google+. But I realized that the Super Science Circle is simple and efficient way to get new people to see that Google+ isn't a ghost town.PLEASE SHARE THIS POST... FOR SCIENCE!When I was attending +ScienceOnline 2013, I must have helped dozens of people join Google+, and the first thing I had them do was import this circle. It's an invaluable tool for getting new people up to speed. So, I just did a complete refresh on the circle. I examined every single member and judged them according to my two-part criteria:1. Active in the last 30 days or so.2. Regularly post on scientific topics. If you know anyone who might make a good candidate for this circle, please let me know.As always, import this circle into a new, temporary circle, and then you can refresh it when I share a new version.DON'T FORGET TO SHARE THIS POST2013-03-19 22:39:3139967163160CC G+

Or, I had a senior moment and missed them.  I thought I had avoided that this time but I still managed to miss +Magnus Ericson should should be around 454. I noticed some interesting things when compiling this circle.  There are a lot of people that moved into the top 500 that abandoned G+ for some reason or their interaction has become one post a month.  I have also noticed that many of the photographers in this group have a lower follower count than they had 6 weeks to 8 weeks ago.  I'm not sure what conclusion can be drawn from this but I find it very curious. To view the lists please see the following links.001 to 080: http://goo.gl/mmr7w  4'431'409 - 55771081 to 160: http://goo.gl/mXuup  55368 - 37454161 to 240: http://goo.gl/rLmy1  37343 - 30457241 to 320: http://goo.gl/o06Hy  30131 -25785321 to 390: http://goo.gl/747Lf  25760 -23013390 to 450: http://goo.gl/xDc2D  23006 - 21347450 to 510: http://goo.gl/sEnac  21321 - 194402013-02-23 23:33:1450013641100CC G+

Carry The One Radio:  Tapping Into the Brains Avoidance Centers
#ScienceSunday

Check out +ScienceSunday's content partner, Carry the One Radio, and their new episode with Dr. Garret Stuber at UNC, Chapel Hill.

The What - Traditionally, dopamine is known to transmit reward signals (food, sex, etc.) in the brain and promote behaviors that lead to that reward again. What you may not know, however, is that the area of the brain that releases dopamine, the ventral midbrain, also receives signals of aversion (things we find unpleasant or even dangerous) from a far-off brain region called the lateral habenula. These avoidance signals promote behaviors that lead us to avoid unpleasant or dangerous things in the world.

The Lab - These brain circuits are necessary for survival and are thefo... more »

The Unexpected.

While out photographing Snowy Owls on Amherst Island this year, this hawk decided to get pretty close to me.  I always attempt to maintain my distance from the wildlife I photograph out of respect for them.  This hawk was not concerned about me and landed quite close to me.  I was appreciative of the great opportunity to get a close shot to this beautiful hawk.  You never know what to expect each day you go out to shoot, but I always enjoy it.  All in all, it was a great day of photography.

Cheers everyone.

Science in Action

I thought it would be fun to start snapping some photos of the science I'm doing on a daily basis. There are often cool visuals that we see everyday that you would never see unless you worked in a lab. This is a photo of our centrifuge as we purify plasmid for a lentiviral gene delivery experiment.

Finally.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I have been hoping to photograph Snowy Owls for a few years now, but have come up empty.  This was finally the year and I was able to find a number of them over my Christmas vacation and get a few photos.  They are truly magnificent and it was special to see them in the wild.  I had as much fun observing them as I did photographing them.  I look forward to my next encounter with them, but for now will have to enjoy the photos I took of them.

Carry the One Radio: Pulling DNA.

We bring you the newest interview by Carry the One Radio (brought to you by +Sama Ahmed) of Sophie Dumont at the University of California, San Francisco.

Find the episode here: http://www.carrytheoneradio.com/episode/2013-12-01

The Process - When a cell divides (called a parent cell), it provides a complete copy of genes to each new cell that is formed (called daughter cells). This complicated process occurs repeatedly to accomplish an organism's development, repair, and replenishment. To reliably split the DNA correctly requires an orchestra of microscopic interactions among many molecules.

The Mechanics - While we know many of the molecules involved, scientists still know relatively little about the mechanical interactions that underlie this process. Our guest this month, Sophie Dumont, Assistant... more »

Mantis Eating a Fish

This really has to be seen to be believed. A mantis (probably a very hungry one) pounces on and eats an actual fish. Although, given that they are capable of eating birds, it's not altogether too surprising.

What's So Special About Science?

I love this quote out of the AAAS presidential address.

“[t]here is nothing which can better deserve your patronage, than the promotion of Science and Literature. Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of publick happiness” - George Washington, first annual address to congress which you can find here, http://ahp.gatech.edu/first_state_union_1790.html

I also particularly like the concluding passage from the AAAS presidential address.

"The American public already highly values science and scientists and seems to have an intuitive grasp of heavy-tailed, not immediately monetizable, returns. Through communication with the public, we must continue to provide the evidence that may justify those beliefs—indeed, this is the mission of AAAS. But also as individuals, we must seize every opportunity todemon... more »

Scientists Rising to the Challenge

Our congress may not want to do their job, but researchers show their resolve to continue to do their groundbreaking and life changing work despite serious adversity.  Dr. Sally Rockey, the NIH's Deputy Director for Extramural Research posted to her blog today,

"My colleagues and I have heard from many of you since Friday, expressing significant concerns regarding delaying the review of applications to the May council round due to the Government shutdown. Applicants faced with a four month delay in a funding decision described serious consequences to their research programs. Additionally, many reviewers contacted us saying they are ready and willing to do anything to get these reviews done. In light of this feedback, our review staff have risen to the challenge, and will be working with reviewers to go the extra mile in... more »

The Science of The Zombie Brain

Carry the One Radio, our newest +ScienceSunday  content partner,  brings us another fascinating podcast looking at the  science of brains through the lens of the  Zombie Brain!

Catch the podcast here: http://www.carrytheoneradio.com/episode/2013-10-31

The What - No, zombies are not real (at least not yet), but that does not mean we can’t enjoy analyzing their mental capacities.

The Who - This is the work of Brad Voytek, scientist at UCSF and our guest this month on Carry the One Radio. When Brad isn’t busy with his scientific research mapping the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that makes us human, he “studies” the effects of zombification on the brain. He uses this work as a fun way to teach neuroscience. Listen as Brad describes the zombie brain and how it can help us teach how the humanbrain might ... more »

Two Egrets.

These beautiful Great Egrets did me a favor and set up in a spot that both put the background in relative shadow and direct light on them.  This allowed me to expose for them and their reflections and produce one of my favorite Egret shots in some time.  I would say I spend many hours per photo that I find acceptable.  This often involves sitting for a long time watching the light and scene for the right moment.  I love every minute of it!

Brain, Plumbing, and Sleep.

Researchers out of the University of Rochester have demonstrated that the glymphatic system, which you can think of as the brain's "plumbing" system, changes states during sleep.  The space between cells can increase by 60% when asleep or anesthetized!  This change allows molecules such as beta-amyloid, a molecule associated with Alzheimer’s, to be cleared more rapidly when asleep than awake!  This study helps provide a novel clue into the function of sleep.

The video below shows dye flowing through the brain when asleep (left) and when awake (right).  The increased flow and clearance described above can be observed with the increased flow nad clearance of the dye on the left!

Retrograde motion
When you plot the position of Mars in the sky, you’ll notice that in general it moves from West to East. But when we are closest to Mars, it seems to go backwards for a bit before continuing. This is called retrograde motion, and this challenged early models of the Solar system which had Earth at the center. The animation shows why Mars appears to go backwards for a bit.

This Great Egret just finished its morning fishing routine and was ready to perch in a nearby tree.  It's always a magnificent experience to spend extended time with an animal in the wild.  Often, you get a quick glimpse of an animal and they are off.  But this Great Egret remained fishing for about 2 hours while I photographed the bird.  A wonderful experience.

Pain.

While I love the aesthetics of this immuno-fluoresence image, what it represents is not nearly as fun.  This is is a peripheral nerve that is involved in communicating a signal to the central nervous system (spinal chord and brain), where it will be interpreted as pain.

Afferent vs Efferent - Afferent nerve fibers, also known as sensory nerve fibers carry signals from receptors to the central nervous system.  These are the nerve fibers that would carry a "painful" signal to the brain.  *Efferent* nerve fibers, also known as motor nerve fibers, carry nerve impulses away from the central nervous system.  These are the nerve fibers that carry the signals that allow you to move.  When thinking about pain, we are interested in the afferent fibers.

Pain is Good - Pain has largely developed to help provide a reflexivewith... more »

At Home.

I'm always fascinated by the interaction between wildlife and their environment.  This Bison was at home resting on Antelope Island with the beautiful colors and patterns of the grass, beach, and the Great Salt Lake all around.  The Bison was introduced to Antelope Island in 1893 and has a population of around 550-700 on the island at this time.  The dry grass prairies provide a near optimum environment for the Bison.  It was a lot of fun being out in the island with these beautiful beasts and I look forward to spending more time on Antelope Island!

It's Horribly beautiful!! wow!!

Any Animal That Touches This Lethal Lake Turns to Stone!

There's a deceptively still body of water in Tanzania with a deadly secret—it turns any animal it touches to stone. The rare phenomenon is caused by the chemical makeup of the lake, but the petrified creatures it leaves behind are straight out of a horror film.

Photographed by Nick Brandt in his new book, Across the Ravaged Land, petrified creatures pepper the area around the lake due to its constant pH of 9 to 10.5—an extremely basic alkalinity that preserves these creatures for eternity. According to Brandt:

"I unexpectedly found the creatures - all manner of birds and bats - washed up along the shoreline of Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania. No-one knows for certain exactly how they die, but it appears that the extreme reflective natureof t... more »

Who's More Pig-Headed, Dems or Republicans?  Science Attempts to Answer

An interesting study conducted during the 2012 election attempts to answer this question and provides some insight into the stalemate occurring with the government shutdown.  It appears that both sides have equal levels of "belief superiority", while conservatives tend to be more rigid in their belief systems.

The study was conducted during the 2012 election and may offer some insights into our current stalemate.  Study author Dr. Katlin Toner states that “Once people get into a position that they’re feeling superior about, it makes them unable to compromise.  Because if you believe you’re totally right, then why should you yield on anything?”

A Part of the Puzzle: NHE9 and Autism

❑ People with autism have difficulty with social interaction, language delay and stereotyped interests or repetitive behaviors that vary widely in severity between individuals. Currently diagnosed at rates of 1 in 88 children, autism spectrum disorders are an urgent public health issue.

❑ Autism is one of the most inheritable of neurodevelopmental disorders. We know this from twin studies, family trees and rare chromosomal abnormalities. But it is also the most complex - because no single gene contributes to more than 1% of autism cases. We describe this as extremely heterogenic.  Most likely, these myriad genes impact a few common pathways, such as signaling between nerve cells. Although geneticists trawl through massive banks of DNA sequence and clinical data to uncover candidate genes, each one still hasto be... more »

Morning Flight.

I have been spending some time with the Great Egrets on Jordan Lake near Durham, NC recently.  It is wonderfully serene out there early in the morning with a number of egrets, herons, bald eagles, and osprey on the lake.  It is probably one of the few times I get to sit back and relax.  This Great Egret just finished catching a morning meal and was headed back to a tree to perch for a bit.  I spent about the 3 hours in total with this bird and enjoyed every minute.

This shot and more black and white wildlife photography can be found in my "LIfe" gallery here http://www.robbybowles.com/Art/Life

Cells: Masters of Their Domain
#ScienceEveryday (for when it's not +ScienceSunday)

This is a repost of a #ScienceSunday  post I made over a year ago at this point.  I wanted to go back into my archives and reshare for those that may not have seen it originally.

Cells are amazing, they help build, maintain, and provide the function to your organs and tissues.  However, sometimes it's difficult to visualize what type of impact they have on their environment.  In my field, tissue engineering, we try to harness their abilities to grow new tissues and organs to treat disease and injury.  During this process, we get to experience firsthand how they impact their environment.  I have provided a gif below that demonstrates the ability of cells to remodel their environment.

We have seeded the cells in a collagen gel.  The cells attach to thiscollage... more »

Breakfast for One

I have been on a bit of a Great Egret kick recently.   I have been spending time down on Jordan Lake near Durham, North Carolina photographing these beauties.  I parked for a couple of hours this weekend on a favorite spot for them to fish hoping one would make an appearance.  I wasn't disappointed!  This one showed up and fished very patiently.  I had my focus locked on for about an hour before the strike.  I was starting to cramp up!

This shot is immediately after the fish was plucked from the water.  You can see the water droplets around the face from the fresh capture.  I cropped down from the photo I posted on my website (http://www.robbybowles.com/Art/Wild/i-wJVwHFb/A) so that it would be easier to see the action.

Fall Begins.

It's always great when the colors begin to change and you can start including them in your photos.  This Great Egret here on Jordan Lake perches against the backdrop of the first sign of color change.  I often go out looking for Bald Eagles to photograph on the lake, but I really should spend more time on these beautiful birds.

Knee Rainbow Fail: Be Willing to be Wrong
#ScienceSunday (curated by +Allison Sekuler, +Rajini Rao, +Chad Haney, +Rajini Rao, and +Robby Bowles)

This is a failed experiment and they happen all the time in science.  In fact I spend most of my time "failing".  But the great thing about science is that we check to make sure what we are seeing is real, and not a byproduct of our experiment.  We run controls to confirm our experiments are real phenomena.

So the beautiful photo you see here, did not tell me what I had hoped.  However, it's better to know you are wrong, than assume you are right.  You can do great damage assuming you are correct.

Be willing to be wrong, you may be surprised where it leads you!

Evening Light

It has been an incredibly busy 6-8 months with a new baby and the very grueling faculty job search that started in the Fall of last year.  As a result, I haven't been posting much or using plus as much as I would like.  I'm trying to ease my way back into it.  Here is my first photo in quite some time from a recent trip to Salt Lake City.  This photo was taken about 2 hours north on Bear Lake.  My newborn waited patiently with my wife for about 10 minutes while I sped through setting up the shot and getting back into the car before he awoke.  Mission accomplished!

The Induro blog covered our nature photography today!  Always fun to get a little exposure :).  We haven't been able to get out to do any photography recently with the newborn, but hopefully it won't be too long!

I really do recommend the Carbon CT series of tripods, they provide great stability and ease of use.

Where I've Been.

I have been missing from plus for a bit now and a couple of you have kindly inquired as to my whereabouts.  I wanted to share a quick post and photo providing that answer.  My wife and I had our first child recently and I have cut back on a few endeavors, including plus, to adjust for his arrival.  I do plan on returning as time permits, but for the time being my posting will be limited.  Thanks for understanding.

Standard genetic parts, graphene speaker, hair-thin endoscope, self assembling tissues, true nanocomposites, robotic cloud, and more.

1. A Precision Genetic Grammar for Engineering Cells.
A research group / company called BIOFAB has launched an online shop for a library of standard biological parts that it has created http://www.nature.com/news/dna-tool-kit-goes-live-online-1.12585. These standard biological parts - DNA sequences - allow precise control of gene activity in the bacterium Escherichia coli  and should allow biologists to design bigger and more complicated circuits and engineer cells that can make medicines and perform other useful tasks simply by plugging in various sets of genes. The sequences overcome a significant barrier in synthetic biology in which genes inserted into an organism often do... more »

Lego Organs.
#ScienceEveryday (for when it’s not #ScienceSunday)

Organs and tissue are incredibly complex in terms of their cellular and material components.  An orchestra of cell signaling and material architecture is necessary to produce and maintain function of these complex tissues.  Therein lies one of the great challenges in tissue engineering and growing new organs.  How can we create these complex tissues in the lab?  A paper recently published in PNAS (http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/02/27/1300569110) may provide one key tool to help create these complex structures.

Legos – The concept has been around for a long time in the form of a favorite childhood toy of many.  The researchers at Columbia University have created very small building blocks of multiple shapes that allow complex components to be built up to help create complex organs.  Thekey here ... more »

Likes, Pluses, and Personal Privacy.
#ScienceEveryday (for when it's not #ScienceSunday )

An intriguing paper was recently published in PNAS (http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/03/06/1218772110.full.pdf+html) on the ability to predict personal and private traits from facebook likes.

A direct quote from the paper states "We show that a wide variety of people’s personal attributes, ranging from sexual orientation to intelligence, can be automatically and accurately inferred using their Facebook Likes."

It is important to note that the statistical techniques used are not particularly complex.  This makes similar methods fairly easy to employ if one has access to the data.  With more and more of our lives being made available online through our own actions on social media, this almost seems inevitable.

Will this cause you tocha... more »

Man has 75% of Skull Replaced!

Now this is just cool and amazing.  3D printing was used to replace 75% of a man’s skull!!

3D Printing - The technique used here was similar to a tissue engineering article I recently posted about (https://plus.google.com/u/0/114146479114949843175/posts/RvjmfiwN2or).  The patient had their head scanned and then that data used to produce a CAD (computer aided design) file.  This file was imported into a 3D printer, which then produced an implant layer-by-layer with the correct topology to match the patient’s skull!  This patient specific technology can dramatically improve implant fit and outcome.

PEKK  -  The material used for the printing was a thermoplastic, polyetherketoneketone (PEKK).  Thermoplastics are polymers that soften above a certain temperature but harden once cooled again.  This property allowsthis materi... more »

Mysterious Notochord
#Sciencesunday  (curated by +Allison Sekuler, +Rajini Rao, +Buddhini Samarasinghe, +Chad Haney, and myself (+Robby Bowles))

I’m sharing this beautiful image from a paper recently published in the Journal of Cell Biology (http://jcb.rupress.org/content/200/5/667) on the notochord and it’s role in spine morphogenesis.  Now you may be asking why this would be of interest to you.  The reason is simple, back pain is a huge problem, it dramatically reduces our quality of life and has huge societal costs.  The cells studied in this paper (notochordal cells) may be playing a significant role in the development of back pain.  Here is why.

The Intervertebal Disc - The intervertebral disc is a cartilaginous tissue found in your spine, which is believed to play a role in the development of back pain when injured or diseased.   Thisdisc is res... more »
