+Neil Patel has posted an infographic, How to Calculate the ROI of Your SEO Campaign on +Search Engine Journal  http://goo.gl/iwLcNf .

The takeaway from this infographic, "Return on Investment = Life-Time Value – Customer Acquisition Cost" (ROI = LTV – CAC), is, of course, valuable. However, since it's presented in an infographic rather than text it’s value is mute.

If one queries by 'Command' (OSX) 'F' or 'Control' (Windows) 'F' to search the page content, none of the words or acronyms are present nor if one does a view-source in the browser and runs the same query are any present. (The exception is 'ROI' which is included in both the title element and the headline.)

This is also true for the six resources footnoted at the bottom of the infographic:

Not only are any possible SEO benefits which might have accrued from value attributed to the anchor text, back links, etc., that the links in the infographic are actually NOT clickable is a usability failure. Even with shortened URLs no one is going to retype the addresses — unless it’s to make a point in the comments on a poor user experience (UX).

In short, I fail to see any purpose in presenting content on a blog which ostensibly seeks to address search engine optimization (SEO) in a format which can’t be crawled and indexed thereby defeating searchability.

Preserving user-initiated activity (media in play, completing a form, etc.) should a visitor opt to click-on a link before the activity concludes should always be a goal. However, I'd suggest choosing to implement target="tab" to open a link in a new tab rather than target="_blank" which open a new window.

target="tab" also validates in HTML5 in both Validator.nu Living Validator: http://validator.nu and the World Wide Web Consortium's W3C Markup Validation Service: http://validator.w3.org .

Back before broader acceptance of tabbed browsing and right-clicking links, I used to use inline javascript to force links to open in tabs (adapted from a recommendation by +Aaron Boodman): <a onclick="window.tab.open(this.href, 'popupwindow', 'width=, height=, scrollbars, resizable' ); return false; " target="tab" href="http://www.example.com">Example</a>.

Now, for me target="tab" works.___

Are these patents a description of what we might see with Author Rank?

They do describe an "authority signature value" influenced by content that you're a creator of, and how pages might be ranked based upon topical authority.

They also answer the question about how authority might be used when there is more than one author.___Google receives a patent which recognizes value for an author's authority. +Bill Slawski's latest post, Google Patents on Author Signature Values and Authority Scores, http://goo.gl/P6aoJ , outlines an "authority signature value" for the content an author posts.

Given the toggle on / off function of the Show / Hide sidebar button, I'd like to see toggle on / off functionality added to the History and Bookmarks menubar icons. Or if menubar icons will go away in favor of the sidebar, then add a History tab to the Bookmarks | Reading List | Shared Links tabs in the sidebar.

Favicons are not displayed in the addressbar, or any of the lists: Bookmarks, Reading List, Shared Links, and History. This needs to be fixed.

I will say the "smooth scrolling" is a real improvement.___

Following the SEO maxim, "content is king", the greatest benefit is realized by including video transcripts in the page content.

During Google I/O 2009, +Vanessa Fox posted, "Google I/O: New Advances In The Searchability of JavaScript and Flash, But Is It Enough?" http://goo.gl/79lOY. While Flash, of course, has it's own issues the premise is still the same, how to have content [text] from within a video format indexed.

If the text from video content is solely for placement on one's own web site there will be much greater benefit from dealing with the transcript as actual text and placing with headlines, subheads, blockqoates, etc. Google places substantial value on <H1> - <H6> elements, etc.

It's about improving the indexing of the content by increasing the crawlability of the page.

A Custom Analytics Report To Identify Testing Opportunities

To get started with website testing and landing page optimization you need something to test. In the old days (2009) we would look for landing pages with a high bounce rate and test those pages.

But that's a very one-dimensional view of the world. External traffic sources land on different pages. And we need a better metric than just bounce rate. Let's also consider conversion rate to help us understand the impact of a landing page. We need a multi-dimension, multi-metric approach.

I created a custom +Google Analytics report that shows landing page, conversion rate and, if you're an ecommerce site, transactions and revenue.

Click here to add the custom report to your analytics account: http://troni.me/16TJvJf

You can view the traffic sources for each landing page a couple of ways.

1. Start by adding a secondary dimension of source/medium (or campaign).

2. Look for combinations that have >30% bounce rate and low conversion rate

Or, you can click on the name of a landing page to view the traffic sources for each page. (You can continue to drill deeper and look at referring keywords as well).

Remember, change this report to include your specific conversion events.

Please let me know what you think!___+Justin Cutroni's posted A Custom Analytics Report To Identify Testing Opportunities http://goo.gl/2zGgE . A great primer on using Google Analytics reports for landing page optimization (lpo). +1

Is AuthorRank live? In a Google Webmaster hangout +John Mueller & +Mariya Moeva answer, "Is AuthorRank as it is publicly termed live and effecting the Search Results?"

The short answer is "get prepared". John expounds further on authorship, extolling how having an author profile photo in the search engine results pages (SERPs) is having a beneficial influence on click through rates (ctr).

Is AuthorRank Live?

There is not what I would call a "definitive" answer in the response from Googles John Mueller.
0:58 - 2:44

Question:
Is AuthorRank as it is publicly termed live and effecting the Search Results?

Response:
M: AuthorRank is really popular, I think Matt mentioned it
JM: OK
M: At SMX this week talking to Danny Sullivan
JM: I think this is something we are still mostly working on, so it's not something that you really need to worry about at the moment.
It's probably giving to understand how Authorship works and ot make sure you have your site setup for that, to kind of get prepared for all of that
, but er at the moment it's not something critical you guys have to worry about.
M: It's just good for your brand for people to see your face in the search results.  So, if you want to do it just for the actual users as oppossed to how your site is raning, that is great.
JM: Yeah  I mean,. it's definitely something to kind of get started with, to understand how it works, to understand how it ties in with your Google Profile, how it er kind of interacts with the publisher markup, what the differences are there so you will have things prepared technically, that you are ready for this, that people are used to seeign your face in the Search Results, that er you are happy with how it's working out.
So even if it's not directly used for rankings I think it's something that can definitely affect how users click through to your content because if they see that you are there and they generally like your content, then they are probably more likely to click it.

So make of that as you will.
