Scott Jarvie380,505POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURESIt's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event.SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINKIt's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all.You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to.BENEFITWell it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most. I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks likeON AIRThis will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout.I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't.SPECIAL GUESTBecause I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things I will have my good friend and great photographer +Susan Marinello on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well.We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access.DIRECTIONS1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery2. Put a title or description of what we'll see in the album3.  IMPORTANT If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and perhaps your profile in a recorded Youtube video.4. Make sure the album is Public access5. Add +Scott Jarvie  +Susan Marinello to your circles6. Return the favor. Take some of the other people's albums and +1 some of your favorites.IMPORTANTIt bears repeating:If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and your profile (maybe) in a recorded Youtube video.DShare your Album- A Jarvie PlusOne Critique Experience2012-09-12 05:30:00148G+

EDZUL FREDY KRISNAWAN0This is My Nucleus CircleIt is made up of a variety of people from all interests and backgrounds and a few pages. There are a handful of newbies as well. The common theme is that my interactions with these people has been for the most part all positive.Want to be added to the #hyperball?1) Add me to your circles.2) Share, +1, and Comment This Share3) Reshare anything that interests you on my stream (profile) from today or the rest of this week.People inspire you, or they drain you - pick them wisely.  - Hans F HansenThis is a positively charged circle filled with positive people; if a few "neutrons" find their way into my circles, they will likely not be in them for long - I have no room or time for negative people in my circles or in my life. I have all of these people in my circles and all of them - except one but I believe that is a mistake due to domain issues - have me circled as well. There are more that I wanted to include but had to cut due to the limitation of how large a shared circle can be on G+. The limit is 500 and you are able to increase it to 501 if you include yourself.» I cut anyone who hasn't been active on GPlus over the past 2 weeks although you are still in my circles - I realize people take vacations!» I also cut a few that I don't yet know very well or who fell to the very bottom when sorted by relevance.» I cut most pages as I prefer to share circles filled with people.» I didn't include a few friends of mine that have asked me not to share them in circles. If anyone in this circle would prefer not to be included in any additional circle shares, let me know and I will respect your wishes. This is a good circle to add and share. If you encounter any spammers in my circles, let me know. Bear in mind that some newbies do not realize or intend to spam and may just need to be told. I am going to be a guest on the following hangouts on air this month:10.11.2013 (Fri, Noon EST) - The +Mia Voss Show10.16.2013 (Wed, 6PM EST) - +Jason T. Charles Lupica83,296═════════════════════════════════     Top Photographers you should follow                 An Art of Photography Circle  Photographers whose art we think will amaze you ═════════════════════════════════#ArtOfPhotographyCircle tag to allow people to easily mute this post. It's been a while since I shared a circle here on G+ so I thought I would team up with +Scott Thomas and +Brian Dukes to share with you the first new circle I've created in more than a year.  We think you'll find that the photographers in this circle are some of the very best that G+ has to offer.  Of course you're probably already following people like Jeff Sullivan , Lori Hibbett, Jay Patel and  Vivienne Gucwa but we think that all of the people in this circle will add high quality content to your stream.  All share their amazing work and many of them share tutorials and resources to help you perfect your art. When deciding who would be in this circle, we used these guidelines• Sharing mostly their own work• When sharing the work of others, the work is clearly identified• Little to no, promotional material. • Some people are included that share a lot about technique but may not share a lot of their photography.• If they have gifs in their stream, they're almost always educational. • The images shared by these people frequently fall into the category of, "I wish I'd taken it" • They post to G+ on a regular basis,  For some this may be a little as once a month.  For others, this may be one or more a day.  People who post less than once a month are not included.  We prefer to circle people that are active here on G+. No one has asked to be in this circle, however, we intend to share a version of this each month.  *If you know of a talented photographer you'd like us to add*, please leave a comment and share the circle.  Doing so will get us to look at their profile. However, there is no guarantee that we'll include them in a future circle.   We want to maintain the quality of this circle.  Therefore, we will only add photographers that we would want to see in our own personal stream. Many of the photographers in this circle are well known so we are particularly interested in hearing your choice of photographers with fewer than 15'000 followers.  We would like to give them the opportunity to gain more views for their work. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the quality of the work by the photographers in it.  ValidationThis circle was very heavily vetted.  We have looked at each photographer's stream and decide that we would like to include them in this circle. +Charles Lupica (me), +Scott Thomas and +2014-06-27 17:39:05116935056CC G+

Gailen Mapes64,770Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Canon Camera  D-F - 4 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).       Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to June 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting May 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag.I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +Gailen Mapes2014-06-04 10:27:00163605CC G+

Lonesome Prairie

I had a blast last weekend. Skies and light was absolutely awesome. I was in an area previously unexplored and was photographing to heart's content.
This was a tricky scene to photograph. I absolutely wanted light on that tree. I had to wait for it. I stood there for at least 30-40 min until everything lined up. Light, no wind, clouds, ... Patience is a virtue.

Fish Creek

Last week I drove around in, what was for me, an unexplored area SW of Priddis, Alberta. I got to say it, I might have fallen in love with the terrain around there. Rolling hills, creeks everywhere, lots of sloughs, and lots of trees.
There was one road in particular that I loved driving on. And that was Coalmine Road W. If you are in the neighbourhood, you should give this road a try!

Minimal Monday Wrap Up no 139

A VERY slow week this week here at #minimalmonday  . You guys knew it was a monday right? :p I've seen some photographs come through without the appropriate tags. Sad to say but those will be not considered for the wrap up nor for the chance to be publicized in +Stark-Magazine . Make sure to publicly share your photo with the #minimalmonday  tag and to also tag me.

It's tough to say but +Frank Hoefs your photo was definitely a top 3 choice. But it wasn't tagged properly. So – I have to be hard here – I can't consider this photo. I'm really sorry.

Very excited to announce this new opportunity for all participants of the weekly #minimalmonday theme.

From now on, all award winners go into a monthly pool where both +Jason Lowry and I will pick one monthly winner. That winner will have the option to get the chosen photo published in Stark Magazine.

Since photographers are always on the lookout in ways to show their work, we thought this would be a perfect opportunity for you to play along with the theme.

Oli

We are always seeking opportunities to promote artists, so we are stoked to announce a partnership with +Olivier Du Tré .  Oli has literately spent hundreds of hours promoting artists on Google +.  We are in the business of promoting artists so working with Oli just makes sense.

How it works [we love simplicity]

Upload an image [Theme is Minimal Landscape] each Monday to Google+ and tag it #minimalmonday   AND include Oli’s name +Olivier Du Tré

Each week Oli reviews the tagged images and announces 3 winners, Gold, Silver and Bronze.  From these 12 winners for the month, the Publisher  of +Stark-Magazine  of in collaboration with Oli will select a winner to be published in the next Issue.  There is an new opportunity to get published each month!

This opportunity begins Monday so get ready!  The winning entry from month 1 will be published in the October Issue.

Don’t worry, nothing gets published without the permission of the artist and of course, publication is optional :)___Very excited to announce this new opportunity for all participants of the weekly #minimalmonday theme.

Homestead

Here's one from last winter. (I know, I'm a bit late)

I took just 1 photo during the minimalist workshop Marc Koegel and I set up in March of this year. I believe workshops are all about YOU getting the shot and not ME getting the shots I want. But this was too good to pass up on so I took it. But while I was making it I explained a brief version of my approach (and the zone system) to 4 of our students. I let them look under the dark cloth as well.

If you are interested in attending the 2015 version of this workshop. Check this link. Registrations are currently open. I would love to see you there!

Hill

I know I haven't been sharing many photo's over the last 6 months or so. But I am still going at it. Don't you worry. I just lack the means to scan my 4x5 photos. I've been meaning to buy a new scanner. But for now I am manually scanning in sections and stitching these parts together. Big downside is dust since I am directly scanning on the glass of my V600. Not the best of options I know.

Anyhow. So here's a photo of a random hill I took about a month or so ago. I developed the negative over the weekend.

This is FP4+ (rated at 80) in 1:4 DD-x at N+1. I placed the grass in the foreground (shadow) on Zone III, and the sand (foreground) fell on Zone VI. I used a red filter in this one too. Contrast of the negative is really nice. A little burning of the sky and a slight overall contrast adjustment was needed but that was it. The area on the... more »

Contrast of the negative is really nice. A little burning of the sky and a slight overall contrast adjustment was needed but that was it. The area on the bottom of the hill that is slightly lighter in colour was due to the fact that the grass was lighter over there. Probably due to the fact that water runs down the hill there and the area is slightly wetter than the area surrounding it.

Minimal Monday Wrap Up no 132

Pretty quiet week back here at #minimalmonday
Not a lot of entries this week. Must be summer. Or the Calgary Stampede.

Just on a side note. When you add your work to the theme, please ensure you plus me. I like to keep track of all your entries in my email inbox. If you don't, I don't see your work, and therefor chances are that I won't feature your work. I also ignore the 'I'm going to link every friggin' damn theme in my post'-posters (unless it's really good).

Winter Finale

I know, meteorologically, summer started a few days ago. What the heck am I doing with a winter photograph. Right?!

I haven't gotten around developing some of my winter photographs yet. Those are still in the fridge waiting for me.

A few of them I have processed already. Here's a group of trees that has eluded me in recent years. Every time I took a photo something went wrong. I finally got something worth keeping.

Lower Kananaskis Lake and Opal Range

This is from a while back. I photographed this together with +Bernardo Möller . You can see his photograph here: https://plus.google.com/114392797573764577387/posts/8F6LFq1Dx7a

I measured the light as followed. The trees on the right and the foreground dark ice was placed in Zone III (I lightened the ice up a tiny bit in post). The cloud in the middle was placed on Zone VI. With the sunlit snow on the peaks at VI 1/3. The foreground snow fell on zone VI. Therefore I developed N+1.

4x5 Delta 100, 1/60 @ ƒ22 1/3
I didn't write down the lens. But I presume this was with the Fujinon 90mm wide angle.

An early contribution for #mountainmonday curated by +Michael Russell .

Deforestation No6

Continuing my series on the clear cutting/tree harvesting close to my home.

This is such a multifaceted photograph. Very layered both in composition as in story.

The trees in the back fell on Zone III. The sky with the filter became a VI and was very light blue (the filter darkened it a bit). The trees on the ground where overall a zone V with the brightest areas (the faces of the cut trees in sunlight in the foreground) to be zone VII.

Minimal Monday Wrap Up no 124

Hey it's Thursday! Time to do the wrap up for this week's #minimalmonday  !

My fav of the day goes this week to +Eric Fredine and his subtle yet masterful photograph of Iona Beach. What I really liked about this was the monotone feeling of this photograph, the details in the foreground, the glare on the water. The veil of daylight. Lovely high key photograph Eric. And I like that 'thing' in the water. It's like a snake on the prowl.

Good photo by +Greg Mills as well this week. Great detail in the rocks, water and sky. Great to see you not using a too long of a long exposure. It would have yielded a completely different photograph. One thing I would do differently (I talk about this a lot) is let that rock touch the horizon line. You created an unnecessary tension point.
https://plus.google.com/101113091420824726764/posts/45Kne7axsF4

This photo by +Alexander S. Kunz could lead to an interesting discussion about foreground. How much or how little foreground is necessary to make a foreground work and what do you put in your foreground to make that work. You see, I think the photo is there if you crop out the rocks on the bottom. I see 4 bigger rocks that are making a circle around the standing position of the viewer, making a barrier and locking them in. A barrier that intervenes with the ability to further explore the photograph. Also is this photograph about the rock in the distance or the rocks in the foreground? It's a bit too busy for my taste. Crop it square or 4x5 horizontal around the shark fin and you're in business. Or crop out the shark fin all together and make the photograph all about the rocks in the foreground. I don't find the combo working too well. BUT it is a well processed photograph.
I want to hear what everybody thinks about this. Am I weird? Again I am not dissing Alex. Just trying to start a discussion.
https://plus.google.com/110486517623939606418/posts/Uw2hYvCNktL

The same discussion about composition we can have about the square photograph by +Gerard McGrath . It is a very bottom heavy photograph. Would you think a little bit more foreground, a step to the left and a slightly lower position would make this a better photograph> Or not? I think it would. What would it do? It would separate the two left rocks better. It would place these rocks higher in the water and would make it less bottom heavy. Again... what are your thoughts?
https://plus.google.com/117334967857829202117/posts/3V4eR9C14qT

YES +Bernardo Möller! This is a killer photograph. Who cares you had to jump through hoops in the processing department to get this? It's awesome! LOVE the added grain too because it emphasizes the texture in the concrete.

The Grandfather Tree

It's been a while since I shared a new photo.
I still photograph. Don't worry about that. I stepped it up to 4x5 and loving every minute of it. I'm just even more selective than before with the medium format camera.

I've also keeping myself busy testing my Delta 100 and FP4+ films in my preferred DD-x developer and putting these test sheets under the densitometer. The results where fascinating. But I now know everything I need to know about development for these 2 films.

About this photo.
If I recall correctly (I don't have my notes with me) I placed the shadowed bark on zone IV, highlighted bark (on the right, and the foreground root) fell on V 1/3. The illuminated patch of ground on the left fell on VIII 2/3 with the darkest areas (being the shadowed areas between the roots) on II 2/3.

Processing was minimal. I burned in the edges and background forest a bit. Did a slight overall contrast adjustment. And highlighted the bark of the tree a bit.

This is FP4+ (rated at 80 instead of 125) in Ilford DD-x 1+4 at 20C. I developed this N-1 (to get that sun patch under control).___

Here's a little behind the scenes photograph from an outing this morning/afternoon.

Three weeks ago I had no clue this tree existed this close to where I live. It's literally in the ravine across my street. It was +Kurtis Kristianson that asked me where this tree was whilst showing me a picture of it. I gasped. What?! Where?! How did I miss this. This is in Cochrane?!

So today I loaded a few holders with the freshly tested fp4+ and started my search for it.

Yup I found it alright. I took 2 photographs of this tree and 1 of the tree you see in the picture in the background to it's left.

Just finished developing these negs in DD-x and they look great.

Minimal Monday Wrap Up no 123

+Sandra Canning get's my fav of the day this week. Sure it is NOT a minimal landscape photograph (this theme is about landscape photography) but this is TOO GOOD not to share. This is CLASSIC photography. Very exquisite tones. I can't believe how little people noticed this photograph. This is a masterpiece. A true portfolio photograph. PRINT IT SANDRA! It's going to look amazing.

I'm biased when it comes to scenes that are local to me. +Bernardo Möller posted a beauty of Lake Minnewanka in Banff. I've seen this tree many times and my buddy +Paul Zizka has a stunning photograph with this tree, an owl and aurora in the background. I've looked at this tree on some occasions and always knew I wanted to photograph it. Bernardo beat me to it. Last time I didn't because Paul just made his photograph. There aren't a lot of different compositions out there with this tree. The terrain dictates us where to stand. Well done Bernardo. Love this one!
https://plus.google.com/114392797573764577387/posts/eBuvczakSG2

Originality. It's a tough aspect of what we do. +David Orr posted just that this week. A composition I have not seen too often before and therefor comes across as fresh. Beautiful little waves you photographed there. I can feel them splashing on my face. :D Every thought of doing a series from these?
https://plus.google.com/107343380917808930971/posts/8PkGbMQZ22T

This is a photo straight from a science fiction movie or something +Michael B. Stuart ! Good concept. I wished the sky was a little less busy. But again, I see a series in this. Same vantage point. Different skies and/or light. Thumbs up!

This one is killer too by +FineartPhotoshots ! Almost War of the Worlds-esque. Love the subtle processing.
https://plus.google.com/104246440058522125973/posts/NuQdmYtZMRN

+Martin Rak is on a roll with his latest series. Love the big Z shape that is leading you through the composition. I can't wait to photograph open water again soon (September, I'm going to Newfoundland).

Those where the photo's that caught my eye. Great week! Lot's of quality yet again! Well, for me it's back to the grindstone. See you all next week for another edition of #minimalmonday  ___

Minimal Monday Wrap Up no 121

Man why do my weeks always turn into these crazy busy weeks?! It's Thursday again so here we go. Bear with me.

+Greg Mills wins this week's 'Fav of the Day' award with his stunning Photograph "Jefferson View". The darks in this photo are very deep yet there's enough detail in them to keep me happy. A great first contribution as well by +Paul Trebilco (I hope I tagged the right Paul. Paul please add a portrait photo to make things simpler, THX). Great low key photograph with low contrast. It makes it a very moody atmospheric photograph. Cold and desolate looking.
https://plus.google.com/112713142385664220883/posts/QhTTgQWSrCf

'Regular' +Bernardo Möller added a beauty this week too. Love the movement in the seagulls. Love the grain in this photo as well. Good separation between the rock and water/horizon too. Big thumbs up!

+Marek Rak submitted a photograph that makes me think of the lighthouse series by my friend +Marc Koegel . Dark, moody, ominous and somber looking photograph (which is great!). Nice cloud motion that draws you into the lighthouse. Thanks to +Quincy Jefferson for the tag.

Minimal Monday Wrap up no 120

It's Thursday and I'm only now able to do the wrap up. So very sorry about the delay friends.

Great qualitative week yet again. I feel like I'm saying this week after week but it the truth. You guys keep pushing the bar up higher and higher. In the process, you teach me (and others) valuable lessons.

The 'fav of the day' award goes this week to +José Luís Costa for his superb 'cloudy nike effect'. Second week in a row where a 'non regular' gets the prize. ;) It's a great seascape. Love the light. Love the contrast in the dark ocean. Love the sun rays (looks indeed like the +Nike logo).  Well composed. This one is a keeper José!

+Frank Daniel Brubakken was early to the party this week! He shared this last Thursday! :) It is a very beautiful, subtle coloured, long exposure square. I can almost smell the seaweed from here. I wished there was a little more separation in between the rocks though.
https://plus.google.com/105003321811678461670/posts/8HJfgRbjtf7

When +Marc Koegel and I did the winter workshop last March, I told him that there's a photo in that quonset location we went to. I'm super happy that +Bernardo Möller FOUND the photo I had in my head for this quonset. But now I need to find another quonset! :) Very nice light on the curved aluminum roof! Great processing too with subtle gradients to keep the eye locked in and a good 4x5 crop.
https://plus.google.com/114392797573764577387/posts/Sy7X9JrFMF9

Benji (+Benjeev Rendhava) posted an interesting seascape as well. The motion in the flags is wicked. The curvature of the sticks is enough to suggest to my eyes to keep wandering around the sticks in a circular motion without loosing attention and wander off the frame. Of course the subtle burning of the corners helps this as well. Thumbs up Benji!
https://plus.google.com/109014209938613931495/posts/Gh3uorsRDKZ

Brilliant photograph by +Simos Xenakis this week. Moody. Almost gloomy and grim rendition of a simple subject. It feels like this was photographed in subtle moonlight. This is VISION! Love it!
https://plus.google.com/113111857754202208081/posts/NW9eHNDBH6g

Minimal photography is often 'done' in B&W but working in colour can be beneficial too. Take this photo by +John Dunne for example. There's no mistake that the lighthouse (and not the island with the lighthouse) is the subject here. Love the clouds that direct the eye towards the lighthouse. And the water that mimics these lines. The movement of these two secondary subjects (clouds and water streaks) visually pushes this island to the side. And that's OK. The composition is still balanced.
https://plus.google.com/103731328851511193776/posts/1VMVWeGqBQx

I love trees. Every photographer loves trees. This little tree is a special one +Bernd Walz . Keep it close to your heart. This is a scene that can be photographed year round, with good results! Very nicely done.
https://plus.google.com/103312915472597933613/posts/Lm2gJksG3ME

And finally a little intimate photograph by +Garry McCarthy ! This is one heck of a photograph. Beautiful tonalities. Beautiful curves. I think I'm in love!
https://plus.google.com/105575110775527575127/posts/J4CEVaNZQHd

That was it for this week! Two things I'm keeping an eye out for next week:
- will another 'non regular' scopp up the main prize?
- will the bar be raised higher yet again?

Happy Easter to all! May you kill many chocolate bunnies. I Hope your Easter is eggstra special! ;)___

Minimal Monday Wrap Up 119

What a week what a week. A tremendous amount of submissions! Quality submissions. So it's a bit heartbreaking for me to only feature a small selection of work that I liked.

Man I had a very touch time deciding who I'd pick for the fav of the day this week. I finally settled on +Simon Williamson 's photograph. Such a peaceful photograph yet very powerful. Maybe the water is a little too gray but that's just a small detail that can be fixed rather quickly. The photo resonated with me and somehow reminded me of a series Ansel once did. Looking forward seeing the final of this once Simon returns to his calibrated computer. This photograph has fantastic potential.

+Toby Trueman added a very moody photograph in this week's mix. Sometimes, we photograph light. And only light. Like in this photograph for example. This is all about the sliver of light behind the shape of the mountain. Drama!

Simple symmetrical photograph by +Martin Rak this week. Great detail in the concrete. Emptiness sounds about right. I feel the quietness and freedom.
https://plus.google.com/100121771572038665942/posts/FED82gufRX2

The same feeling I get from +Simos Xenakis . This was a long time favourite of mine during the day. Love the hint of the island in the background. Not sure what the line is to the right of the structure. Clone that out. I like the juxtaposition of the 'thing' and the island. The line ads just a little bit of distraction for me.
https://plus.google.com/113111857754202208081/posts/SFGF9YZyc4m

Stunner by +Grant Murray this week too. Minimalism at it's best. Again same comments here. Love the juxtaposition between fore- and background. Also like the nature vs man made subject tension. Very nice!
https://plus.google.com/112737356589974073749/posts/SXLa7j7eM7E

+Bernardo Möller shared another photo from the minimalist winter workshop +Marc Koegel and I set up last March. I'm very pleased that Bernardo got something out of these trees worthwhile sharing. Great to see the trees disappear in the background. And yes 4x5 format! (you see Marc how nice that works < inside joke). Soft gradients at the top and bottom keep the eye locked in on the trees.
https://plus.google.com/114392797573764577387/posts/3gYocj3o8Jq

Right on +Johan Peijnenburg! Very very nice photograph. Poles in snow always work. Maybe a few steps to your left could have opened them up a little but I'm glad to see you emphasized the length of the poles by choosing for a vertical composition. Thumbs up!
https://plus.google.com/101373961279443806744/posts/1pin6Lq2P1W

And finally...

We have discussed this a few times before already but minimalism doesn't automatically have to translate into long exposure and black and white photography. Sure those things sometimes help out a situation but they aren't necessities. Proof of that concept this week was provided by +Anne Abernathy . A very simple morning photograph. The trees are almost like a brush stroke to me. The blue light just ads to the overall mood of this photograph.
https://plus.google.com/106308460468087891570/posts/1jCc38vTgwc

Big thank you's and congrats also go to +Šárka Svobodová , +Chris White , +Richard Terpolilli , +Gerard McGrath , +Craig Szymanski , +Christof Teuscher , +Benjeev Rendhava , +Jerry Downs (very smart photo BTW), +Didier Demaret , +Maria Blosser , +Adam Williams , +Stephen Cairns , +Bernd Walz , +Matthias Schroeter and +Dominique Dubied for making my initial selection.

Have a great week friends! See you all next Monday for another edition of #minimalmonday  ___

Minimal Monday Wrap Up 118

Busy week this week for the theme. A lot of entries. Took me a bit to sort them all out and to find my favourite. Here goes.

This week fav of the day goes to +Paul Simon Wheeler for a few reasons. First of all the feeling it depicts. Solitude, being alone, even the feeling of swimming against the current. Second, the amount of subtle details is beautiful in this photograph. The waves, the rock, the distorted sand underneath the waves, ... gorgeous. Third, composition and technical execution are spot on. I got noting more to say than that this is an excellent square.

Maybe not perse minimal, BUT a very good photograph was posted by +Andy Lee  this week. You see in my opinion, you don't need to be a hardcore minimalist to introduce some facets of minimalism in your work. This photograph is a good example of that fact.
https://plus.google.com/115492479555704154908/posts/J1AJAnbTjoX

Here's another good example of careful composition. This time by +Russ Bishop . It's just proves that the idea of S.EX (Simplify and EXclude) works!
https://plus.google.com/118337792374870658609/posts/Bx2zHpRVPmc

Here's the other side of the spectrum. Very talented (minimalist) +Martin Rak is on a mission. This new series Martin is killer! This is the best one (IMO) so far. Love the hint of humanity in the photograph. Perfect composition and long exposure technique.
https://plus.google.com/100121771572038665942/posts/dEP1kYizo2H

And what about this one by +Grant Murray . 3 years in the making you say? That's patience my friend. But it proves that it was worth the wait. Great 2:1 pano with a big hooking L shaped leading line. Can't go wrong with L shapes. Love the illumination the fog provides too! Well seen, well constructed composition and idea!

Enough seascapes. Let's get on to land for a bit. Calgary was thrown back in winter mode over the weekend. And beautiful hoar frost continued for 3 days straight. I see scenes like this one by +Andy Gray  all over and just looking at his photograph, makes me fall in love with the prairies all over again. I LOVE scenes like this. It is probably the sense of space that this photograph is creating in my mind. (hope that makes sense).
https://plus.google.com/111835024921462866899/posts/SLUk5Rcp44d

I want to share 2 photographs that were made on our Minimalist Winter Workshop +Marc Koegel and I set up a few weeks ago around Calgary. (shameless plug) We are doing this workshop again next year. Follow this link if you want more info about this event.
http://www.vancouverphotoworkshops.com/workshops/winter_photography_calgary.php

The first one if a great 2:1 pano by +Bernardo Möller. Bernardo did great here. Giving the trees ample room to breath in the frame. That's probably the one thing I take away from minimalism the most. Make room for your subjects. Nothing worse then trying to cram it all in there. Do the opposite often works better.
https://plus.google.com/114392797573764577387/posts/YLS2jy21Tyh

The other one I want to share is the photo by +Neil McElmon . Neil blew me away with this one during the review process. Such a great location. And Neil proved me wrong by including the metal thing in front of the houses. It sure does work.
https://plus.google.com/104773885009548694562/posts/XYCkxp73jDH

Finally I want to share an exception to the landscape rule here at #minimalmonday   and share with you the photograph +Jerry Downs posted. It just shows you that S.EX (see above) can be applied to any subject in any situation! Love the graphical nature of this photograph. Very well seen! Great moment.
https://plus.google.com/110265446230424225875/posts/Z9gXzjEN4QW

So. That was it for this week! See you all next week kids. Have a great weekend.___

Minimal Monday Wrap Up 117

What a weekend this week! Geez. Between all the commotion my blog post caused, there was one such thing as #minimalmonday too this week. This theme is a result of one of the things I miss in social media these days. To sit down and tranquilly study other peoples' work and come up with a little bit of an honest critique. And to promote the work by people that submit. This is my way of giving back to the 'community' (or whatever you want to call it these days). Nothing more nothing less. I don't do this to gain followers nor do I do this to promote my own work. This theme is about you.

This week was not as busy as usual. Probably because of the changing of the seasons. Winter is slowly coming to an end. And as a result, also the simple way of simplifying otherwise busy looking scenes.

This weeks Fav of the Day award goes to Vesa Pihanurmi of +FineartPhotoshots . The photo that he posted and the accompanied title made me chuckle because I can totally relate to why you would name a photograph like this 'Three Ladies and a Skinny man'. I've been saying it for some time now. There are male and female subjects in the landscapes we photograph. Trees often take on a soft appearance vs rocks and mountains are often the dominant male elements. A combination of the two is something I actively go out searching for. This is a wonderful photograph that makes me come up with a whole scenario in my head. Look those two trees on the right convinced the third tree to go and talk to that guy on the left there. The two trees on the right are giggling about the whole situation living there life through the third tree. Almost being a little bit jealous. I LOVE photos that do exactly this to me. Well done Vesa!
https://plus.google.com/104246440058522125973/posts/TEEpZKgrwm4

Two options to die for is a great photograph by +Matthias Schroeter . Very well presented. Great contrast, texture, sky, movement and details. Love the symmetry of it all too. And that ring in the bottom left makes this square special. You could have easily make this completely symmetrical by stepping in the frame a bit or cloning the ring out. I'm glad you did not. Somehow it anchors down this whole composition before it floats away.
https://plus.google.com/110066418092382572627/posts/MJxQGuf5qax

Photography is painting with light and that's exactly what +Frank Hoefs  did this week when he submitted his photograph titled "Shoreline". It is a really good photograph with a beautiful sense of illumination, and deep shadow detail (look at the sand on the right). Good selenium toning too.
https://plus.google.com/101524367788273063124/posts/GoovX1fiAdE

Crazy cool photograph by +Martin Rak this week too. The repetition of the submerged stakes work well to lead your eye through the square.
https://plus.google.com/100121771572038665942/posts/avARBhU4QgV

Leading lines galore in +Andy Gray's photograph this week. Who says you can't photograph in full sunlight and during bluebird skies. Right. Here's a prime example that you can.
https://plus.google.com/111835024921462866899/posts/STgDHGR7auS

And finally I want to share this dramatic photograph by +Andy Lee. This is very nice Andy. Great texture created by the water in the foreground. I would burn in the right side of the composition or completely cut it of to create a 4x5 photo. Just my opinion. It would
benefit the light in this composition.
https://plus.google.com/115492479555704154908/posts/HmUUuLkft83

There you have it. This weeks selection.
Have a great week everybody!___

Minimal Monday Wrap Up 116

Good week for MinimalMonday again this week. It all started on a high note on Saturday, when enthusiastic +Kevin Boyle  posted the first photograph of the week. He set the bar very high for everyone with his photograph 'Bullies'. A photograph I instinctively liked. Without hesitating I give him my Fav of the Day award this week. It is a well-composed and balanced photograph that is executed to perfection. I have just the spot in mind to showcase this 24x24" print. That is in my bonus room. :D All kidding aside. It reminds me of a Michael Kenna photograph (Six Sticks, Omi, Honshu, Japan, 2003) that I've always liked.

'Tree among Sweeping Hills' is killer +Stefan Bäurle.  Great composition. Talk about dynamic symmetry! This gets me excited. If you look at the left square of this photograph the tree is in the middle of that square (vertically speaking). There is so much more going on so I drew a diagram to explain. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m32/olivierdutre/StefanBaurleComp_zps708ae26e.jpg
This is composition my friends! Look at where the horizon falls. Look at where the top of the tree falls, the top of the hill. I hope this was not an accident. Study Composition! It pays off in the end.
https://plus.google.com/109619063322910077914/posts/VKT8Ye8TcCa

+Didier Demaret  knocked it out of the ballpark too this week with this photograph. Compared to the previous wreck Didier shared in an earlier edition of the MM wrap up, this one is even more simple then the previous one. And this one is at the same time also more mysterious. Reminds me of a slain dragon. Well done!
https://plus.google.com/101804880413288303244/posts/2RojPAFD5pX

+Šárka Svobodová  submitted a stunning photograph (yet again). This too is very Kenna-ish and shows an intimate relationship with what is photographed. The combination of wind breaker fence and crooked tree work very well. Great toning too!
https://plus.google.com/103428784083394204372/posts/FbYBXsy9brs

And to end this weeks wrap up I’d like to share +Alexander S. Kunz  photograph ‘Remembering Atlantis’.  Beautiful! Muted colours and a soft processing hand combined with good composition grace this photograph very  well.

Minimalist Winter Workshop Results: Leigh Trusler

Here's another photographer that was part of our Minimalist Winter Workshop. Today I'd like to introduce Leigh Trusler.

On another note. +Marc Koegel  and I are proud to announce that we have set the dates for the 2015 'Minimalist Winter Workshop'. We are setting up shop on February 7th and 8th, 2015. According to Marc 'that should heighten the depth of snow and lower the temperatures - all in the spirit of a true winter workshop'. Let's keep our fingers crossed on that Marc.

Details on how to register will be available soon.

Plus One Collection III

For the third year in a row +Ivan Makarov is doing his 'Plus One Collection' again, supporting a noble cause yet again.

This year the proceeds of the book will go to the Samburu Project in the hopes of being able to build a water well for a tribe in Kenia.

There's a few days left to submit your picture and have a chance at getting published in the coolest Google+ charity book around! Read more details about everything in Ivan's post here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+IvanMakarov/posts/c54Y13Ljif2

Interesting to see that this year's book will cover a theme. The theme is 'Our World' with subsections for 'Our Planet', 'Our People' and 'Our Creations'. The photo I'm re-sharing with you falls under the 'Our Planet' section.

Around the town of Cochrane where I live, life gets dominated by 2 things. Oil/gas wells and lumber. Cochrane has a very large lumber mill that supports quite a few people in town (job wise). And Sundre (a town about an hour north of Cochrane) is the largest around. They harvest the wood they need (we need apparently) in the nearby foothills leaving behind pure devastation. Sure everything gets replanted years later but I can't help but think how disrespectful we go about our natural resources every time I stumble onto a scene like this. Calgary is growing exponentially and so are the surrounding towns (like Cochrane). Sadly this is the side-effect of that grow spurt and nobody knows/does anything or cares about. But I do.

I felt the #PlusOneCollectionIII was a great way to show people what is going on around 'My World'.

Thank you for reading this.___

The button shows the number of followers you have directly in a small button. You can add this button to your website, like the +1-Button of Google or the Like-Button of Facebook.

You can add this button directly in your website. For more information about the CircleCount Buttons and the description how to add them to another page click here.
