Hi friends. Today seems like a prime day for storm chasing here in Alberta. So my #minimalmonday  wrap up will have to wait until tomorrow. Sorry about any detox symptoms you might experience later tonight. :D

Tree Line, Ittre, Belgium

Here's something along the lines I usually photograph. It's weird. For some reason I am addicted to these very simple scenes. Tree lines are subjects that fascinate me for some reason. I really don't know why.

The story behind this one goes something like this. This too was photographed while hanging out with +Didier Demaret. It was still raining (see previous post, which was photographed later that day). Half an hour or so before I had photographed something with the Noblex panoramic camera. When I wanted to dig out the good old spotmeter to meter this scene. I couldn't find it. It was in my other bag. Which was now 30min away in the car.

So I basically had to guess. Guessing is a big word. I knew the light didn't dramatically change in the last hour or so but I was nonetheless missing my meter. As a result this... more »

Two Trees, One Bird

Here's one form my outing with +Didier Demaret . Such a funny story behind this one.

Didier took me out on a day of sight seeing around the town he lives in. Of course it had to rain that day. Ugh.

After a bit of a hike along side muddy fields and pastures we came acros this scene. Two beautiful trees on the opposite side of the field we were walking along side of. The rain simplified the background really well. Rain curtains tend to do that.

So I screwed on the Vivitar 2x and the longest lens I brought with me (looked through the viewfinder) and then I saw this. I turn to Didier and say 'dude there's a bird in between the two trees'. Like on que, the bird started to walk from right to left. In perfect silhouette. Just like that bird knew it was posing for us. When it came close to the center of the two trees, Ire... more »

Malo les Bains, France

Here's another photograph I took when I was back home. For this one I just jumped the border into France. The day before I had seen these wave breakers on Google Maps and I had to go there.

To be completely honest, every time I see a LE photograph I am amazed how it smoothes out light and time.

This one is a bit different. It's more of an impression of the place for me than anything else. This was photographed during conditions where the sun popped out from behind the clouds once in a while. It's great to see how the LE did it's thing.

Field, Ronquieres, Belgium

Here's another one form my trip to Belgium.
This was photographed on the day I met up with +Didier Demaret.  It rained that day. A LOT!
We were just finishing up our visit to the Inclined Plane in Ronquieres when I saw this field. I said to Didier that I wanted to take a closer look.
When we stood next to this field I realized the rain really brought out the shapes of the gullies that the tractor tires made. I made 2 photographs. One panoramic with the Noblex (I still have to develop that one) and one with the RB. This is that photo.

Again very little adjustments. Contrast, and a little dodging and burning. Done.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Still don't know why +Didier Demaret  didn't take a photograph though. Lol ;)

Breakwater, Wenduine, Belgium

Here's another photograph from my time in Belgium. Taken on the same day as the previous upload (White Bench).

I am amazed how good this one came out to be quite honest. Very little adjustments where made. A little bit of burning on the edges and a slight contrast adjustment where needed.

When I was exposing the film I had my doubts though.

But I am very pleased I was able to 'make' a nice L shape starting approximately in the left bottom corner with the highlights of the waves. Thank you long exposure! :)

This is a 9:20m exposure.

White Bench, Raversijde, Belgium

Here's a photograph from my trip to Belgium last month. I started to develop my negatives from my trip and this one jumped out at me.
Well mostly because I had forgotten all about it.

It's a long exposure (probably 9min or so) of a white bench on the pier of Raversijde. And one of the first photographs with the new Mamiya Sekor C 50mm ƒ4.5. What a lens! Sharp and lots of contrast!

Oh and this is an almost straight scan. I just burned in the edges a bit and a very slight contrast adjustment. Love it when a plan comes together.

Minimal Monday Wrap up No74

Guess who's and what's back! #MinimalMonday that's what's back!!!
Here is wrap up no 74. Half way through the episode I called it the 'let's place the horizon in the middle'-episode. :)
Thank you again for keeping this theme alive and kicking. Even after a 3 week hiatus it was amazing to see all the work come in. Thank you guys so very much!

edit
Aaaaaagh for some reason G+ never generated the youtube preview. And I was unable to share this with +Simon Dawson  (now it works) to let him know, his photograph got selected now. That should now be corrected.

As usual here are all the links to the photographs featured in the video in complete random order.

Don't forget about #MinimalMonday today

Really excited to see everyone posting photographs to #MinimalMonday again. It's been three weeks but I'm very much looking forward to doing the wrap up tomorrow.

For all you photographers that don't know the theme or what it is about. I am looking for your best minimalist landscape photographs. Collie or black and white it doesn't matter. But try to simplify your compositions so only the necessary elements are left.

Very much looking forward too everyone's submissions today and the next few weeks.

Here's to a productive #MinimalMonday !

Malo Les Bains

I just returned from a 2 week trip to the good old home country, Belgium. Long story short. Think of it as a 2 week splurge on food, beer and an overdose of family and friends.

I was particularly excited as well to pick up a new/old camera too. A Noblex Pro 150/06 panoramic camera. It's a weird bugger. The camera has a lens which is mounted in a rotating turret. You gotta see it to understand what I mean.

The camera covers a whopping 146degrees. Pretty crazy. You don't know what wide is until you use one of these. ;) My dad found a great deal in Belgium a few months ago and I told him to go ahead and purchase it.

Anyway. This is the very first photograph I made with it and it shows you exactly what I mean. This is Malo Les Bains just over the border in France. I saw these breakers on Google Maps and decided to make a drive for... more »

Thank you to everyone who is posting photographs to #minimalmonday today. Sadly (as mentioned in the last 3 wrap up videos) I'm not doing the theme this week, next week or the week after that due to me not being home. Next #minimalmonday will be on May 27th. Thanks again for all your support.

Well. Almost leaving the house to go home for two weeks. It's funny to say that actually, because Canada feels like home to me now. Anyway. I'll see you all in a couple of weeks. And stay out of trouble ok? Oli

Storm over Abraham Lake

Wow... I finally caught up with some processing over the weekend. This is an image I made this winter when I met up with +Rob Tilley at Abraham Lake. This was made on the first day when I had just arrived at the lake.

The clouds were AWE-SOME! Very moody, windy and rapidly changing conditions. The light was flat, but the sky was pretty. I didn't see a lot of photographers out on the lake that day.

I did meet some friendly (but horribly unprepared) Japanese tourists who where very disappointed that the lake did not contain the wonderful bubbles that it is known for.

I couldn't care less because I knew what I saw was wicked. Once they were gone I jumped on the ice, found this little snow drift and shot a roll of film.

Don't ask me anything technical about this photograph other than it was made with theRB6... more »

I know I know. Most of you are still waiting for 'my big reveal'. You will have to wait a little longer for me to 'officially' spill the beans but it's a fairly big deal.

For now, I present to you the portfolio I worked on for the last 3 weeks. In the end it turned into a 16 photograph portfolio covering The Prairies. This slideshow was part of the leave behind package I made for the venue.

All photographs were printed using archival pigment ink on Ilford Pearl, T-hinged to acid free museum board and matted using 8-ply mattes to 16x20". Obviously up to par with the highest museum standards.

Oh you liked that huh? What could I be working on?! I can't tell you. Well I could. But then I'll have to kill you.

Here's another small peek. But keep it between us. ;)

I've been extremely quiet lately. But. I've been busy. I'm not letting the cat out of the bag - yet. But I will update the blog about it next week or so. Let me tell you. I am very excited about it and can hardly sleep. Here's a peek.

Minimal Monday Wrap Up no71

I know. You were not expecting this SO early. I bailed on work this afternoon and went home early. A little treat so to speak.

I curated VERY tightly this week. So don't feel bad for not making the wrap up.

Thanks goes out to everyone who contributed this week again (and making the theme trend judging from the total randomness of some entries). It's thanks to you we are still doing this!

Cheers
Here's to you!

Before and After

Here's the promised Before and After of the previous uploaded photograph.
There's no secrets about what I do here. Just a bunch of burning, little bit of dodging and a contrast adjustment. Simple...
The original scan could use a bit more contrast but I'm sure this negative will print awesome.

Epic Light

Here's another one from our trip to Montana.
We were on this random range road that day. Nothing to see really, but frantically looking for something to photograph, when the road started to rise.

We were joking when we were approaching the crest. "Epic view, epic view, please give us an epic view". And then "BOOM" here's your EPIC VIEW!

Everybody jumped out of the car and quickly set up the camera. Awesome light was spilling over the fields in front of us. Absolutely amazing. This scene and moment made our days.

Square Butte, MT

Hey here's a name I didn't make up! :)

This is taken – yet again – from Interstate 15 south of Great Falls, somewhere between Ulm and Cascade. This this is called a Butte. It's an isolated hill with steep, vertical sides and relatively flat top. Square Butte is a 4,728 ft / 1,441 m mountain peak and was a landmark back in the day...

Again light, sky and setting where amazing driving in that day. Although prohibited by traffic laws (I found out later), I stopped on the shoulder of the Interstate. I simply HAD to photograph this. It was too good to pass up.

The Broccoli Tree

Ha... yeah I know. Funny name. But that was what this little tree reminded me off. This was photographed in Yellowstone NP 2 weeks ago. Beautiful park (although we only saw the north part of it due to winter road closures)!

Funny story. We were driving back and I saw this tree on this hill from a long ways away. It's like my eyes are constantly scanning for things like this. Turned out... This little one was on a hill besides the Yellowstone National Park Training Center.

Yeah I know.
PURE WILDERNESS! :)

But the light was so good (soft veil in front of the sun). The angle and shape was so interesting. I couldn't resist! I HAD to photograph this.

By a lack of a better name I call this 'The Broccoli Tree'. Just for now... :D

MOM, DAD, I MADE IT ON A ROCK ALBUM COVER!

Today I'm very proud to announce the new Age of Days album "Radioactivity".
Yours truly was chosen by the band to do the photography for them this summer. Very proud to know that in the end, they chose one of my photograph for the base of what is now the cover photo.

I MADE IT ON A ROCK ALBUM COVER! Pretty wicked huh?!
I can scratch that off my bucket list.
Done and done.

Show your support and buy the album now on iTunes!

Tower Rock Nat' Park MT

Here's a first photograph from out trip to Montana 2 weeks ago.
I developed 2 films over the weekend. Just by luck film no1 and a film that contains one of my favourite photographs of the whole trip.

To see WHAT I photographed click here http://goo.gl/maps/8c1bB

I was so lucky with the light and the sky that day that I had to stop on this little parking lot along I15.

Who says you can't do good stuff from the highway?

Kista Peak Sunrise

Who said photographing a colorful sunrise in black and white is pointless?
I thought so in the past anyways. I'm glad I've seen the light.

Literally. Because that's exactly what the difference is in my opinion.

Here's a sunrise taken from the land tongue at Windy Point. And I can tell you. It was windy! Oh boy.

Abraham Mountain

OK just trying to squeeze this one in for #mountainmonday   hosted by my friend +Michael Russell .

This was photographed a couple of weeks ago. Yes I just scanned it in. No I didn't develop it yesterday instead it was laying on my 'to do' pile. Let's say I finally found a minute or two to post process this.

This was photographed on a sunny afternoon where big clouds where performing a dance with the sun. I waited about 30 min to finally be able to photograph a patch of light moving across the forest you see in the foreground.

Settings I don't recall. But I had the red filter on.

Here's something different...
Well not really. But it's a welcome change from all the snow stuff I've been trying to do lately.

This is also my contribution to #mountainmonday   (It's been FOR-EVER!) hosted by the very talented +Michael Russell

An interesting sunset I photographed not too long ago. So many layers where getting illuminated by the setting sun. And then this little cloud popped up out of nowhere.

If I had to tell you the settings, I have no clue anymore other than I used the tele convertor on the good old trusty RB...

Crooked

I am off for a 2 day stint to Abraham Lake tomorrow, for a little soul searching and for meeting with +Rob Tilley  . I am very much looking forward to meeting Rob. It has been long overdue. Rob was one of the very first people I started following on Twitter. And Rob has always proved to be a very helpful and supportive photographer, for which I thank him a lot.

I want to share this photograph with you that I made last weekend. The reason why I'm sharing this, is because I am slowly zoning in on a particular look I like in my negatives.

When I exposed this photograph I measured 3 zones of light. THREE! This scene was as flat as a pancake, light wise that is. I placed the shadows on Zone III and the highlights (snow and sky) barely went over Zone V. BIG problem. Why? You really need tonal separation to make a compelling print. Something Ansel Adams totally... more »

Once in a while I try to share interesting photographers with you. Here's one of the all time greats when it comes to minimalism or amazing fine art photography in general.

So sit back. And enjoy the deep and large portfolios of Josef Hoflehner. It's going to take a while to browse all of his work.

This is a site I try to visit often because I can't get enough of his work.
