This is the largest known prime number!  Like big diamonds, large primes are useless, but people like them - and it takes lots of work to find them.  This one was found by the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, or GIMPS, a project where volunteers donate computer time to search for primes of the form 2^n - 1.   Currently GIMPS has a sustained throughput of approximately 95 teraflops, making it the 330th largest computer system in the world.

Primes of the form 2^n - 1 are called Mersenne primes, and there are only 48 known so far.  Nobody knows if there are infinitely many, but there are efficient ways to test whether these numbers are prime - much better than for an average number. 

This particular number was proved to be prime on January 25th by Curtis Cooper of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.    He runs GIMPS software on around a thousandunivers... more »

It's finally out.

I'm sitting here on a plane, flying to Minneapolis after signing 1280(!) books last night at the midnight release of A Memory of Light. That marks it as my largest signing ever, though a whole lot of readers (understandably) grabbed their pre-signed books and ran off to read them, rather than waiting for a personalization. YAY!  I have been accepted into the #ingress   community.  I instantly embraces my #ingressinvite   and set out to discover my first 'portal.'  I had only taken a few steps from my front door when I happened upon the #enlightened   base of operations complete with a grand regional portal.  I was glad that I agree with these enlightened brethren, for I would hate to think of what it would take to defeat them.  I just hope I can be helpful in this well kept fortress they have built for themselves.
