Strange Scent on Super Sunday
The Chinese folks have a different way of curing #Bacon  . They hang it in the breeze and let the north wind cure it, rather than smoking it.
This apartment building goes way above the call of duty . I can't imagine what it smells like in their neighborhood. Why does it seem to me that my pal +su ann lim had something to do with this ?
Have a Super Bowl Sunday. Go Seahawks, Go Broncos, Go Bacon !!

Horse and Buggy Topiary

Took this shot on the grounds of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Horses with their buggies are a very common sight on the island, since there are no motor vehicles allowed. All freight (and people, too) is moved by teams of enormous draft horses with their wagons.
This topiary is very clever. Notice, if you can, the grasses the are used here for the mane and tail of the horses.

Good April Fool's Day from the Snow Frog

Yesterday, Mother Nature gave us an untimely morning surprise, 4 inches (10 cm) of spring snow. With that, an early April Fool's object appeared to be creeping up onto the edge of my back yard deck. A Snow Frog is crawling up to get a view of my back door.
Hope everyone is Getting After It today, right +Scot Duke ?

Ready for a Downhill Run

Our 12 year old Granddaughter, Kaylee, is at the Junior Olympics in Winter Park, Colorado today. She is competing in the Downhill Ski Race (or is today the Super G?) . She has her hair pulled up under her helmet and is in the gate ready to Smack It.
Don't believe I could even consider skiing down this hill. How about you? Are you Getting After It today ?

Look At The Rack on This Bird !

Part of the problem that we have in feeding the birds,  is that our dear deer friends think it is theirs for the taking. This photo was taken by my neighbor, Sparky, presumably before she nailed him with the paint ball gun :-}
Hope that y'all Get After It today !

Tunnel of Snow Love

Old Man Winter was a bit late this year, but he arrived with a vengeance ! This shot was taken by my pal, Mike Werkmeister, in Royal Oak, Michigan, just 6 miles north of Detroit. He had just cleaned the sidewalk off with a snow blower. His iPhone then was placed at ground level for this shot. I liked the perspective.
Going to be very frigid here the next few nights in the  -25 degree C range (-10 to -15 F). Keep warm y'all !

A Double Kidlet Birthday

This shot was taken by my daughter, +Laurel Geis back in 2004 on Hawaii. These 2 grand kids of mine (by 2 different daughters) share a February 6 birthday. Tate, on the left turns 16 today, and Audrey turns 15. Fun to revisit this shot for me on a #throwbackthursdays  .

Ca d'Zan- You Can Have This and A Circus

Ca d'Zan is the Venetian-style 30 room mansion built by John Ringling and his wife, Mable, back in the 1920's. It sets on 30 acres of land that includes an Art museum and Circus museum as well.
Mr. Ringling made his fame and fortune as the owner of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum, and Bailey Circus that toured North American by train in the early part of the 20th century. I am shooting this photo standing at the water's edge, so this porch offers quite a view of the Gulf of Mexico.
It's rather cold here today and this photo was a warm reminder to Get After It  !

This is the Little Engine that could, an example of the ice sculptures featured in my town at the Rochester, Michigan Winter Fest. It always me amazed with what talent the ice artists display.
Hope y'all Get After It and chug-a-lug through your day !

A Cannon's Eye View

Fort Mackinac sets on a bluff overlooking the Straits of Mackinac which separates Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. In the 19th Century, the country which controlled the Straits ruled over the lucrative fur trade in the Upper Great Lakes. The Fort changed hands more than once as Britain and the USA  battled for control.
I am standing next to a cannon on top of the wall. From there, after a couple of practice salvos, the soldier commanding this cannon could pop a cannon ball right on an enemy ship's deck, thereby ruining the crew's day :-}
The Statue in the lower center is Father Jacques Marquette (1637-1675) who first evangelized the Native Americans for the Roman Catholic Jesuits. He is also credited for being the first white man to spend a winter on the Island. Better him than me.
Get After It, you Plusketiers !

Cherish the Ladies

This photo by +c cay Wesley really captured the moment. Here in this part of the USA we have the Amish folks, who have shunned the trappings of modern life, (i.e. automobiles, electricity, etc.) and prefer the simple life. Here is an Amish horse and buggy against a dark foreboding sky.
Thanks, +c cay Wesley for being a friend on G+ since the beginning.
Hope everyone has a Get After It day !

Merry Christmas to All of you Plussers !
Santa Claus (Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas) has decided to give the reindeer a break while he works the Mitten of Michigan. He'll be driving this little vehicle here.
This old colored pencil drawing of mine has served as my G+ Christmas card to all of my friends on the Plus since the very first Christmas here.
Get After It during the New Year y'all.

All I Want for Christmas Is A Big Couch

Found this couch while exploring the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan, It's the biggest one that I've ever seen. Notice how my feet can't touch the floor. The coat and tie is how men must dress for dinner at the Hotel.

Solar Powered Lighthouse or...Lighthouse Eclipse of the Sun ?

In the Mitten of Michigan, where I live, is this lighthouse. The Mackinaw City Lighthouse stands right at the very top of the Mitten at the base of the great bridge of Mackinac.
I've always loved lighthouses and this particular one is an architectural beauty. Took this shot in September during the last week-end of lovely weather that this area will experience for many months.

Maw of Creation ?

Up on Mackinac Island, in the northern Great Lakes of Michigan, is this Arched Rock, that has fascinated visitors to the Island for many a year. I learned last month, however,  that my Native American brethren in that region believed that all of Creation came through this Arch !
Be that as it may, I did manage to catch the shadow of the Arch down in the water of Lake Huron, if you'll look closely.
I hope everyone has a Get After It kind of day :-}

One Grand Hotel

The week before last, I had occasion to take a road trip up to Northern Michigan. Had the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular autumn colors and also spend a couple of nights at the Grand Hotel, the crown jewel of the Northern Great Lakes. Buitl in 1887, it overlooks the Straits of Mackinac with a view of the Mackinac Bridge off the veranda.
The veranda is quite imposing, being 880 feet (268 meters) long.
Hope your autumn is shaping up well, and Get After It !

Electrified Mackinac Bridge

We've had some crazy storms here in Michigan this week,  topped by a tornado that touched down 2 miles due north of my house. This great photo by Dave Black shows the Mackinac Bridge during a lightning storm 3 days ago. The bridge spans the strait that separates the Lower and Upper Peninsulas of Michigan . I will be heading there tomorrow morning. See y'all later. I'm going to get after it on the highway !

Anatomy of A Storm Drain

What was once a sloping hillside containing a storm drain system, is now a gaping hole exposing all. A torrent of water from our great flood blew out this hill. Stories of damage and great heroism have been coming forth with strangers helping strangers. Those are the silver lining in a disaster like this.
Have a great day, everyone :-} And Get After It !

The Great Flood of 2014

Folks, there are cars submerged under this water !
The water depth is about 4 meters.
My brother sent me this shot of the Southfield Freeway near his house in Royal Oak, Michigan. He lives about 10 miles south of my place.  The little yellow sign on the bridge reads 14 feet 3 inches. It is the clearance height for the truckers. They were able to open all the freeways last night after a great job by clean-up crews.

Beauty On A Very Soggy Day

Here in Southeast Michigan, we have severe flooding. Yesterday was the second most rain on 1 day in recorded history. As folks clean up and try to get their lives back to normal, I saw this photo of my old pal, Cheryl Willard, who is quite the photographer and acrobat. One of the more elegant selfies that you'll see.
Cheryl played Venus de Milo in my last film World of Art.

Blue Water in Black and White

This fine shot by my friend, Kevin McCracken, was taken up in Port Huron, Michigan. The Blue Water Bridge spans the St. Clair river at the south end of Lake Huron, and connects Port Huron with Point Edward, Ontario, Canada. It is the second busiest crossing between the USA and Canada..
This shot was taken late in the day from the American side as a freighter is about to go under the bridge. I love the lighting on this one.
Have a great day, everyone.

Perseverance Through A Great Twin Tornado Trial

Last month, I posted a scary photo of the twin tornadoes that plowed through Pilger, Nebraska, USA. The tornadoes virtually destroyed the town and flattened the St John Lutheran Church... all except for the bell tower. Not to be deterred, the folks decided to hold their worship services outside at the site of the destruction. My hat is off to these determined folks !

A Jurassic Kind Of Creation

My friend, +Paul Stickland , across the pond, in Britain, is the author of the Children's classic book, Dinosaur Roar. The decision was made to reprint it after 20 years. Great news for Paul, who recently constructed a likeness of his hero for kids of all ages. Here is what it looks like (along with Paul and family). May some of Paul's creative energy rub off on the rest of us.

Twin Tornado Blast In Nebraska

Received a report along with this photo this morning.  We lost our sister church, St John Lutheran in Pilger, Nebraska. The church and parsonage are just gone. I'm sending prayer for them.

World's Biggest Cave

This is a shot by my friend, +Chris Miller , a wonderful photographer and good friend on the Plus here, almost from the beginning. This is a photo of Hang Son Doong , in Vietnam. The mood here seems very prehistoric and surrealistic to me and Chris nailed this one.
Here's hoping that you make friends here on the Plus that are half as talented and social as +Chris Miller . Do yourself a favor and visit his page and take in some of his spectacular work. Have a great Friday and week-end, everyone ! Need I say, Get After It ! ?

New Month, Newly Born Fawn

June Greetings, everyone. Wanted to share this photo of a newborn White Tailed Deer by my friend Kevin McCracken. This was taken just a few days ago here in Southeast Michigan. This little guy was only 15 minutes old when this photo was snapped. The doe will move off from the fawn 200 meters for a short time after giving birth and then return to clean it up.
May you have a safe Sunday and Get After It !

Family Good News

This photo was shot by my youngest daughter, +Holly Paulson .
My son-in-law, Casey Paulson (pictured on left) is in partnership with the center guy, Mike Abbott to develop a new golf course/ country club down in the Houston, Texas. Tiger Woods' team is going to be designing the course which will be the first Tiger design in the USA.. The official press release was made yesterday, and now it's full speed ahead. They used Holly's photo for the release, so she was really tickled.

My Grandson, +Paul Richardson graduated with his Masters degree last week from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Oddly enough, my wife, Toni, and I both graduated from there (in the last millennium). I'm very proud of the young man. He's now officially too big to play Scar and Simba anymore :-}

Life Imitates Art After World of Art

The shot on the left is a freeze-frame from our film World of Art. I call it the "Avenue of Pines". In the film, this is where our young hero, Art first meets the young lady in the painting, Inspiration. Not long after, in my villainous role, I destroy this place with a fiery inferno.
It seems now that Mother Nature has chosen to do some destruction of her own to "Avenue of Pines" with a violent wind storm last week. The film is rapidly becoming a time capsule of what used to be.
For those who haven't yet seen the film, here is the link:

Year Of the Tiger
Yesterday brought baseball back to our area yesterday, and man, have we needed it. This winter was the second most snow on record,  2.4 meters (90 + inches). Our beloved Detroit Tigers played their Opening Day game yesterday and they won in storybook fashion with a walk-off win. Opening Day is a pretty much a Holiday here in the Motor City. Tens of thousands of folks turned out and watched the game and it just proves that hope springs eternal. Spring is here !
Happy April and Get After It today :-)

A Capital Idea

One year ago, I met up with my long lost cousin +Evanne Schmarder in Lansing, Michigan. We hadn't seen each other for 40 years and we spent the day catching up. We also did a little photo tramp and this is a shot I got of the Michigan State Capital building,  a fine 19th century structure.
Hope everyone Gets After It today .

First Full Spring Day Brings you Happy !

These kids from the Detroit Academy of Arts & Sciences practice their craft just a few miles (kilometers) from here in Southeast Michigan. This little video was shot by one of the parents on their phone and it has gone viral during the last couple days. I don't often post music videos, but believe me, this is worth 2 minutes of your time.

Crane Wars
This is an introduction to the work of Kevin McCracken, a co-worker of mine and a fine photographer. He was out on a photo tramp watching these 4 Sandhill Cranes feeding for several minutes. Without warning they paired off and began savagely attacking one another, rolling on the ground and ritual dancing as well.
Kevin said it was a few moments later that he noticed a huge hawk and an eagle soaring directly over them. When the hawk and eagle left, the cranes resumed feeding peacefully.

This is one Big Bus ! When I was in University, I worked for a summer at General Motors Truck & Coach in Pontiac, Michigan. I did various jobs on the final inspection line before they were sent out to their new owners, metropolitan bus lines all over the USA. I never did work on one near this large. Thanks to my pal, +Matthew Woodall for the photo find.

Cherish the Ladies

This edition of Cherish the Ladies is dedicated to my friend, +Andréa Cheroske . She is one of my favorite artists here on Google Plus. Her talent for expression and detail is tremendous and she even allows the whimsical at times.. She hasn't spent much time on G+ lately, but Welcome Back, Andrea,  if even for a drive-by ! Here is her newest piece, "Bear on a Unicycle".

A Friend Returns !

This terrific photo by my friend +G. Brad Lewis is more than just a photo. It signifies the return of a friend to G+. Some folks take a break from here, some leave never to return. I have to take breaks from time to time just to give the rest of my life the attention it requires.
It is so good to see Brad's return to G+ , that it has put a big smile on my face as big as a Polar Vortex :-} Head on over to +G. Brad Lewis 's page and check out his wonderful work in Hawaii, Alaska, and Utah.

World of Art - Internet Debut !

I have been promising my folks here on G+ the impending release on DVD of World of Art since 2012. Plans changed and the film did as well, although ever so slightly.
Here is the final cut, the finished version, according to my Producer/ Director +Mike Allore . My friend +Jonny Victor plays our hero, Art. I play his nemesis, The Man, an evil art killer. The film  is only about 38 minutes long and I hope you enjoy it. Look forward to hearing from y'all :-}

Cherish The Ladies

This yellow rose photo that I snapped in Texas is in memory of +Lee Daniels . Her passing this week has sounded both sad and happy notes here on G+. Sadness to those of us who grieve, but happiness for those of us who were privileged to know her well and enjoyed her presence. This is my Fleur-de-Lee.

A Sad Loss for Our Community

I found out a few minutes ago that our own +Lee Daniels  lost her fight with cancer. She was a ray of joy and hope in our G+ community and she will be sadly and sorely missed here. Her photography work was always beautiful and her shining personality shone through on her posts.

+Isabelle Fortin

I’m sorry I haven’t been online to explain my absence and diminished activity and I’m afraid I’ll continue to be missing for a bit.

My health insurance was cancelled as of June 1.  Every treatment and procedure abruptly stopped.  There are no alternative programs of any sort available for me.  None.  In fact there are no programs for anyone after the government stopped the PCIP program in February.  Even if the ACA does not get delayed, treatment could not resume until January.
In terms of serious conditions like cancer, that can be a death sentence.  As a people, we abhor acts of genocide in other countries, yet we not only commit it here, we legislate it.  Not providing an ongoing program of care is an atrocity.
People will die today because there are no options.  People will die tomorrow, next week and next month because they have no access to care.

I was doing amazingly well.  I was beating the odds.  Having treatment halted is disastrous.  Waiting until January, should the ACA not be delayed, means 7 months without treatment.
Constantly trying to find programs and loopholes and bits of help here and there is taking huge amounts of energy that I could use to get better.
There are others far worse off and who simply don’t know how or can’t advocate for themselves or a loved one.
I went through the same thing when I was first diagnosed and fought long and hard to get coverage.  There were alternatives then.  There are none now.

I am lucky.  My oncology office may have found a program that will cover a small part of my treatment.  I’m hopeful.
But what about the millions of others?  Many will just die because they are denied treatment.  Because there are no alternatives.  Because they can’t even buy insurance or health care.
We won’t die of disease, we will die of politics.

I would love to be here as I used to be.  It gives me joy and sparks my imagination and heart.  This community has been a huge part in my fight and my positive outcomes.  I am still shooting almost every day and working on new projects, and someday I hope to share them with you and, more importantly, revel in your work and be amazed.

Right now, I simply can’t.

Thank you all for understanding.

(Important: I am NOT asking for nor will I accept financial help.  That is not the issue. )

No need to comment or plus. ___A Sad Loss for Our Community
