Happy Flag Day
On June 14, 1777, John Adams spoke about the flag at a meeting of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. He said, "Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation." There have been twenty-seven official versions of the flag; stars have been added as states have entered the Union. The current version dates to July 4, 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state.
On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing June 14th as national Flag Day.
Have a great Flag Day & Weekend everyone :)

Tiny Survivor
Last week a tropical storm came through the area and washed away many chicks and eggs on the beach. The good news is there were many suvivors. Here is a Wilson's Plover chick who was running around the beach like nothing happened :)

Knight Anole
She's back! It's +Reptile Monday curated by +Will Pirnasch so I'm sharing this female Knight Anole to the theme. This is the second year she came to lay eggs in our potted plants and most likely born here. She's almost 2 feet long and always a pleasure to watch. Florida Scrub Jay
The Florida Scrub Jay is the only species of bird to be exclusively found in the state of Florida. It's known to have been present in Florida as a distinct species for at least 2 million years and is heavily sought after by birders. It was officially listed as a threatened state species by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in 1975.

Burrowing Owl Chick
These little chicks are everywhere in Cape Coral, Florida this time of year. This paticular chick was the bravest of all it's siblings hanging mostly outside the nest. This is a great time of year for photographing birds with migration and chicks hatching the oppertunities seem endless. Click on the link below to see more of these owls on my website.

Is your food fighting back?
I captured this Willet getting attacked while trying to catch some breakfast. That little crab put up a good fight but lost the battle.
Hope everyone is having a great week.

Blue Screen of Death
Sunday my computer had a hissy fit and flashed me the blue screen of death (I have not seen that in years). Monday I was able to get the computer back on and stable enough to diagnose the problem (thanks google chrome for the scare) I discovered it's been 2 years since I've done a full back-up so I'll be offline till I get everything cleaned and backed-up :)

Roseate Spoonbill
I found this beautiful bird at sunrise on one of my favorite beaches. They get their pink color from eating crustaceans that have fed on algae. It's hard to believe that people used to make fans from their wings.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend :)

Cover Image Hidden Photo Challenge!
Okay, long post, but it's worth it, trust me...
So I've finally upgraded my profile to cover image and I have to say it took ages to create (just look at how it lines up with other elements in the G+ profile page - sweet!). However, I've done something else with my cover image that I've not seen anyone else do. There is another image hidden in plain sight behind my profile photo that will only be revealed by clicking the cover image. Go on, click it, you know you want to! So those of you who've been looking at the back of my head for the past year and a half now know what I look like ;)
It occurred to me whilst doing this that I could have been much more creative with my two photos and told a short story. Perhaps a profile image of me pointing at something and the hidden image revealing what it is. Or a profile... more »

Red-breasted Merganser
I can't believe it's been so long since I've played online.
This photo was taken at one of my favorite beaches. I love this time of year. It's so much fun photographing birds I don't get to see all year long.

Wolf Spider
(Corkscrew Swamp, Naples Florida)
After photographing this beautiful spider I had to learn more about her. She is unique in the way that she carries her eggs. The egg sac, a round silken globe, is attached to the spinnerets at the end of the abdomen as seen here. This allows the spider to carry her unborn young with her. The abdomen must be held in a raised position to keep the egg case from dragging on the ground, however despite this handicap they are still capable of hunting.

Broad-winged Katydid
Named after it's call "Katy-DID-katy-DIDN'T" made by rubbing it's serrations at the base of it's fore-wings. It can be found throughout Florida in the woods and shrubby fields. I photographed this Katydid at Freedom Park in Naples Florida with +Ray Bilcliff back in June.

Osprey with a fish
Also called a Sea Hawk, Fish Eagle or Fish Hawk. These beautiful birds can be found by any large body of water as fish make up 99% of it's diet. I really enjoy watching these beauties hover over the water and diving for their food. If you get the chance to see one take a few minutes to sit and enjoy the show.
