Winskill Stones
An area of limestone paving above Settle, North Yorkshire.
I like the way the hawthorn tree has grown round the limestone.

Under the Pier
Rust and structure a great combination to photograph.
A blend of two shots and a lot of work with Nik filters.

Metamorphosis
Metamophosis - a complete change of form, structure, or substance, as in transformation by magic.
With the continuing cold weather I decided the best place to be today was at home in the warmth. I have been toying with trying to work an idea I got from Alex Koloskov so I got the light table out, covered the room with drip cloths, found a pot of paint and started playing.

Went on an Architectural Photography workshop today. The workshop was run by Sean Comboy but the star of the show was undoubtedly the location it was held in - the Grand Theatre.
Opened in 1894 the theatre was designed by Frank Matcham who also designed the Tower Ballroom, the London Palladium, Victoria Palace and the London Coliseum among more than 150 theatre and entertainment buildings.
The Grand was almost demolished in 1972 but as a Grade ll listed building it was saved at the last minute.
I hope you agree it would have been a crime for this beautiful building to have been demolished.

Kingfisher
Taken in deep shade at high ISO and, since I only had the 200mm lens with me, an extreme crop. Still I am happy with it since it is my first ever photograph of this iconic bird.

Art Deco Cafe, Stanley Park, Blackpool
The Cafe was opened in 1937. Symmetrical in design high windows were installed to increase the lighting and sense of height and is a common feature of the art deco period.
The term Art Deco refers to the decorative style of the period between 1910 and 1940 and there were many influences on the style e.g. functional design and simple geometry with little ornamentation. There were also cultural influences for example from ancient Egypt (following the discovery of Tutankhamen tomb in 1922).
The Art Deco period is also associated with streamlined curves and rounded corners which can be seen in the interior image.
The interior also features art deco iron grills depicting scenes of sport and fashion.

A north west venue I've not seen mentioned is Blackpool. Three great piers, the tower, trams, pleasure beach, sand, donkeys etc. Plus its got its own airport.

Ready for the Washing Up
Oscar has decided the washing up bowl is a good perch when he is in the kitchen. Dont mind in this weather because it keeps all the muddy paw prints in one, easily cleanable, place.

Wine bottle stopper
My daughter bought me this for Christmas under the misapprehension that once I open a bottle of wine I need to stopper it again. I thought she knew me better than that!

I thought I was Mad
On the seafront leaning into the galeforce wind and hanging onto the camera with frozen fingers " What am I doing here? I must be mad"
Then out of the corner of my eye I saw this guy. I almost missed the shot, too gobsmacked to react at first.

A Study in White
Although officially Fairhaven United Reformed Church, this church is known locally as The White Church. The church was opened on October 17, 1912 and celebrated its centenary last year. The church architects, Briggs, Wolstenholme and Thornley of Blackburn, created a design that imitated some of the features of Byzantine architecture (on the outside that is).

Lytham Hall
This Grade 1 listed building is probably the finest Georgian house in the North West. It was designed and built for Thomas Clifton by John Carr of York between 1752-1764. Apart from Basildon in Berkshire, Carr worked entirely in the North of England and always in the Palladian style. His works include the Castle and Court complex in York, Tabley House, Knutsford and the Royal Crescent in Buxton. Unfortunately, none of Carr's plans, specifications or accounts for Lytham has been found, but it is known that he incorporated parts of the Jacobean house into the service quarters behind the new three-storey main block. The design is unusual in that all the main rooms are on the ground floor rather than the first.
The Hall itself is built mainly of red brick, with stone dressings used for the windows and doors. An Ionic portico links the first and second floors over the... more »

Has the introduction of communities helped or hindered G+?
Am I the only one finding that I have lost contact with many people here because they are posting in communities which I have no desire to be part of and not posting publicly?
As more and more pages become communities this trend is set to continue. G+ is splintering into little villages with their own agendas and the interaction with the surrounding 'countryside' is being lost.

Sunrise
Woke this morning to no rain and broken clouds so took a chance on a drive to get out of town and photograph the sunrise. This is the result. Three hours later the rain was back with a vengeance so the respite was very brief.

End of an Era
Pontins Holiday Camp had been the destination of choice for generations of Blackpool holiday makers. For 40 years it provided affordable holiday accommodation and entertainment to millions. Victim of expanding affluence and lack of investment, it finally closed in 2009.Now in the process of being developed for housing only this thin veneer remains, its sole purpose to provide a security barrier to the rest of the site.

Pain or Pleasure?
One of my granddaughters Christmas presents.. She can only see glamour, I can only see pain.
They should a least come with a warning of the form 'Dont consume alcohol whilst driving these shoes.'

Coxswain William Johnson looks out to sea from on top the memorial to the 1886 St Annes lifeboat disaster.
When the barque, Mexico went aground in a gale near Southport on December 9, 1886, two lifeboats were lost while making rescue attempts. The Southport lifeboat capsized with the loss of 13 of her sixteen crew.
The St Annes lifeboat, Laura Janet, was overturned by waves and all fourteen crew members drowned.
All the crew of the Mexico were later saved by a third lifeboat.
This still remains the greatest disaster in the history of the RNLI.
