Just to let you know, I am still alive!
Have been away for quite some time now, but returned back home from a long planned treatment. Still need a few weeks until I am ready for photography again.
Meanwhile I rigged up my little Toy Box and got her ready for a short trip today on the Schlei Fjord with my daughter. Relaxing pure is all I can say :)

Lotseninsel X, Germany, Baltic Sea, 2012

must see in large (full size zoomable)

Hello all together, who ever is still following my stream here, sorry for being so quiet lately. No excuses, but I still need to find my way through all the social medias I am connected to, which are way too many at this time and kept too much time in the past.
The good thing is that I haven´t missed much of your images, I enjoyed them each and every day, just in silence mode! So please bear with me.

About the image below: I had this waiting on my hard disk for a couple of months, knowing about it´s potential for a pretty good image, but lost the vision I had about it until this morning. Winter is giving us a hard time this year, still plenty of snow and ice all around, it´s dark and bleak for months now, so much different from previous years and spring seems to be far faraw... more »

Globe House, Schleswig, Germany 2012

One from a very few infrared images taken last year. Inside the Globe House is the replica of the Globe of Gottorp, built in Schleswig 1654 and brought to St. Petersburg, Russia, 1717, where the original got destroyed in a fire 1747. Another replica still exists in the Kunstkammer St. Petersburg, Russia.

Hüttener Berge, Brekendorf, Germany 2012

I found this little guy today while having a first infrared field test with my into full spectrum converted 5D MK2. For this image I used a Heliopan IR715 screw in filter. The RAW already looked very monochrome with a tobacco tint, but decided to convert it into black & white. One might think that shooting IR in Winter doesn´t make much sense...but I don´t think so ;)

Oh well, I should mention that the white really is snow and not the so called IR effect :)
Edit 2: And this is not a long exposure...

Dockkoog VII

Have been to the Dockkoog again yesterday and today, but the drive was for nothing. It rained, snowed and all these mean things when I was in mood for light. Chilled to the bones and back home I digged in my folders from early summer, when I was there the last time and found this one, which I haven´t shared so far.

Santa was here :D

Today I got my Canon 5D MarkII back from dslr-astrotec.de
ready converted to full spectrum by removing all the filters from the sensor, which is Anti-Aliasing Filter, IR/UV-Cut Filter and Low Pass Filter. Instead of the removed filters it now has just a piece of clear glass in front of the sensor. To use it as a "normal" camera, I need to attach a IR/UV Cut Filter in front of the lens, which works great and without any AF or AWB issues, no colorcast, no nothing. I purchase the Heliopan 7075 77mm with Schott BG 38 glass, which is exactly the same as the X-Nite CC1 Filter.
To use it for IR photography, I need to attach a IR Filter to the lens. While using Live View, I can auto focus and shoot just like normal, but have to do a custom white balance. Sensor cleaning is working too!

I couldn´t resist to try it right out of the window with a... more »

Last weekend I had the chance to photograph a Bridal Fashion Show for http://www.modemaxhansen.de/ . Something totally different from what I usually do, especially when you keep in mind, that my images usually exposed for minutes, are black & white and planned. So a real challenge for someone who lacks of spontaneity ;)
Here is a selection of images I took. I am only allowed to post them on FB: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.303546989749760.60956.132717130166081&type=1

St. Petri Dom zu Schleswig

I admire +Nathan Wirth´s infrared photography so much, that I decided to give it a try myself and bought a Heliopan R715 infrared filter last spring. Early summer it finally was time to take it out into the field...and the trouble begun. Trouble was all about focussing. Since the filter is pitch black, you really cannot focus like without. Liveview and boosting the ISO sometimes can help, but not really. Then there is the fact of focus shifting, which you get when using infrared and the fact of the imprecise red scale for infrared in the focussing window on top of the lens. It´s all about try and error and experience (once you get it :P).
The image below was the best out of several attempts this year. Accidentally I focussed correct ;)
I never wanted to show you this image, but today I started printing for a limited edition calendar for our open dayc... more »

I thought it a good time to remind everyone who is interested in the forthcoming San Francisco Bay Area photowalk that we are still making plans for January 4-6, 2013.  Our list of guests is growing!  See below for the new additions!  I am still trying to convince some other special guests to join us as well.

We are planning a possible small gallery show for some of our featured guests-- which will give all that are interested the chance to come enjoy and view some prints and talk with the artists (and maybe purchase a print or two if the mood should strike you).

The Glass Agency (+Joel Tjintjelaar, +Michael Diblicek and +Luca Cesari ) will be hosting a variety of fee based workshops that will give those who are interested an opportunity to work closely with some award winningmasters of... more »

Did you ever know that our good friend and fellow photographer +Christian Louw Pedersen is an artist all through??
He not only controls the black & white images, but also masters the black & white keys in such a beautiful way, you should not miss that part of his life!!! Unfortunately he quitted playing, but that hopefully is only temporary!! ;)
Listen to him playing his beautiful jazzy extravagant interpretation of the old traditional "Who can sail" !!! Enjoy and relax here:

Lotseninsel VI

Here is another view from the Lighthouse Schleimuende on the Lotseninsel. I shoot that quite some time ago, but only now I found the time to finish the processing.

I am most likely not around for the next 2 weeks, simply because I am much too busy with preparations for the upcoming exhibition starting October 1st and organization for the relocation of our workshop, out of the containers into a solid building at the end of October. Inbetween I simply need some little breaks, otherwise I won`t be able to finish my work here. That does not mean I am not around, I still will scroll through your streams and at least leave my plusses here and there :)

So this should be my contribution in front of the upcoming

Surprise surprise!! :)

Checking the junk mail folder from time to time sometimes can bring a surprise to light ;)
I just found a message from the Lucy Foundation telling me, that one of my entries has received a Honorable Mention in the 2012 International Photography Awards annual competition Fine Art Landscape Non-Pro Category!! Woot :)
I am so pleased and full of joy to receive such a recognition among so many other and wellknown artists. It was my first ever entry into a competition and I never ever expected to "win" anything. The more I am surprised now, Well +Julia Anna Gospodarou, forget about what I wrote you earlier today, I should have checked my spam folder before ;)
So many thanks to everyone for your continuing support and congratulations to all the winners!!

Eidersperrwerk I

First I want to thank you all for the wonderful support, the warm words and the feedback during the last weeks!
Without you all this would not have been possible. You all out there, you were my inspiration, motivation and stimulus. I want to thank each and everyone for that!
Although the exhibition was not really well attended, there have been nearly 150 people gathered in 5 hours. It was the hottest day of the year and many of them have probably opted for the beach, which I can also understand very well.
I am glad I got the expert audience. There was a lot of feedback, constructive criticism and words of praise. At the end of the day we even were able to sell a few prints.
The last weeks and months were the purest stress for me, even though I've enjoyed every moment of it. It was an incredible challenge for me to work at this high level... more »

Almost done with printing, only a few more to go before I start cutting the matte and framing. Beside the framed images I also have the chance to showcase a canvas of 300cm x 80cm wide pano plus a few other colored images printed on canvas or mounted on foam board.

Help needed

Sorry for being so quiet these days, but I am totally covered organizing, printing and framing for my 1st vernissage in 3 weeks.
I have a question regarding the framing of square format images.
Image size is 30cm x 30cm, the frame is 50cm x 50cm. With rectangulars I usually put them off centered into the frame/passepartout, but not sure about squares.

Would you frame the image centered or slightly off centered?

Your input are much appreciated! :)

Lotseninsel V - The Cage

Another from the Lotseninsel Schleimünde, the same subject as with #2 just from a different perspective.
Holidays are over and just right in time with my first day back in the office the summer slammed in, yay :)) Preparing and printing images for my first short exhibition here in Schleswig at August 18th.

Have a great week all together!! :)

Lotseninsel IV - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out

Like so many others in northern Europe, I stopped talking about the weather now. To deal with that, this morning I shifted all my watches back to standard time, which makes me believing that autumn is already there.

Here is another image from the Lotseninsel showing the Lighthouse Schleimünde. It´s a pretty small one, about 14 meters high and build back in 1871. The lighthouse is still in use and is the guidance / orientation for the only 20 meter wide entry to the Schlei Fjord. As you can see on the sea wall, the water level was dramatically low that day due to the ongoing westerly winds. Usually it´s about 1 meter higher and with easterly storms over a couple of days parts of the seawall and parts of the Island are flooded.

I took this image while it rained quite heavily and tried to cover with an umbrella.Bu... more »

Lotseninsel III

This is the other Tree or group of Trees standing completely on their own on the Lotseninsel Schleimünde. This was shoot from the Naturerlebniszentrum two days before I entered the Peninsula from the waterside. I think this will be my last one in the high key style for a while, missing the dark ;)

For those who haven´t seen it yet, here is a short video I made while shooting the Lighthouse and some other interesting subjects there. In the video you´ll see the Trees from a different position.

Lotseninsel Schleimünde

Please bear with me, but this is my very first attempt on something like videography. Just a short impression of what and where I was shooting yesterday while heading to the Lotseninsel at the mouth of the Schlei Fjord. Had to turn volume down coz on terrible wind noise. We had offshore wind, so you barely can imagine how windy it really was, not to talk about all the rain and thunderstorms inbetween plus the fact that there was absolute no wave action and water level way below zero. Somewhere in the video you´ll see on of these viking boats. In about two weeks the annual Wikingertage / Viking Days starting in my hometown Schleswig. There a lot of these viking boat replicas around then. This one in the video came from Denmark. I just wonder if the real vikings back then would have used a motor boat to get ahead...and I thought the vikings were strong ;)

Lotseninsel II

Some kind of See Sign, as far as I know it holds a weatherstation plus a peak meter for the waterlevel. This one is from today while shooting on the Lotseninsel at the mouth of the Schlei / Schleimünde. Took the ferry while the weather was just great, perfect sky for long exposure, dry (almost) and promising. Once there the weather changed rapidly from heavy rain showers into exploding thunderstorms, back to sun and it was very windy. Wind was offshore and so the cloudmovement. Therefor the water very quiet, although the tide was pretty low. With westerly winds the Baltic Sea here simply runs dry.
I got all wet quite some times. For one time I had to seek shelter in the WC, really had to run with all my rig geared up and while hurrying I lost the Lee Foundation Kit completely with Big Stopper and ND grad plus the Adapterring, which somehow detached (guess I simply... more »

Lotseninsel I - Pilot Island

One out of two trees on the Lotseninsel at the mouth of the Schleifjord - Schlei - Schleimünde..

Escaped from home because we had lost our broadband (didn´t know I am so hooked to the internet)...and made a 12 miles hike into the Nature Experience Park Maasholm yesterday. Once there, all clouds were gone and wind settled (with broadband it would have been so easy to plan the hike). The idea was to get onto the Pilot Island to shoot the lighthouse. Been there about 35 years ago, but only from the waterside. Once I arrived I quickly found out that it is strictly forbidden to enter the island from the landside...pffft. So my plan for tomorrow is rent a ship and get that way to the lighthouse :D
This shot is more or less out of the cam except for the b&w conversion with SEP2 and the reflection which I massively enhanced in photoshop. If youg... more »

Dockkoog VI

First day of vacation...streetworkers still trying to bury some of these tubes into our street, since weeks. And once again these brutes cut my phoneline, the second time in 3 weeks :P Trying to upload using my iphone as a hotspot, which hopefully will do until tomorrow.

One from the archives I forgot to post. Did this one on that bleak day back in early May, when I shattered one of my ND filters at the Dockkoog in Husum. Precisely because it was so bleak and wet that eveninig, I enjoyed it a lot. No tourists, no dogs, no nothing, just me, my camera and the sea!
I´ve been there a couple of days ago again...felt like half europe spending there vacation at the Dockkoog, so drove back home without having achieved anything new.

Have a great week every one! :)

Amoeba Kiel Amöbe II

Another view of the new Center of Molecular Science at the University of Kiel. Moiré Alert ;) No idea how to get rid of that and I think the AA-Filter failed completely with this type of facade (bronce colored metallic grid something). It was hard decision to post it in black&white, the bronce colored facade against the deep blue sky I really like a lot, but at the end I love B&W... ;)
So +Brian Spencer, here is what I had in mind :)

Bülk III

Another one (and as promised the last one) of the old remnants of groynes around the Bülk Lighthouse.
I definitely will return back again and hope for some more cloud actions then. And if I wasn´t such a late riser, I would go and shoot at sunrise as well ;)

Amoeba Kiel Amöbe

I have been out shooting with my daughter this afternoon and drove down to Kiel University Campus.
About 6 weeks ago the new Center for Molecular Science opened it´s doors for the students. A pretty cool idea from the architects to design and name the new building after the Amoeba (Amöbe). When viewed from above, it looks kinda like a Amoeba. You might want to google for some other pictures around this building, unfortunately there is no wiki entry yet.

From the first days I knew about the plannings I wanted to go there and shoot it. Well, this is not a serious attempt on shooting architecture. I made this the last shot on my way back to the car, just to show you how it looks like in the overall view. You will see the one or other extraction over the next weeks.
Did some whitebalance correction, added some contrasts and a high passsh... more »

Bülk V

Sorry for a second image today, but I felt tempted to post another one from Bülk, just to fulfil the requirements of #LighthouseThursday kindly curated by +Heiko Köster. I gotta admit, that the first one from today probably was too minimal for the theme ;)

This is the Bülk Lighthouse / Leuchtturm as seen from the beach promenade in Strande near Kiel. It is the guidance and orientation for the entrance to the Kieler Förde and located at the Bülker Huk. Since 1807 lighthouses have been placed here. The current ligthhouse was established in 1862...well and as you can see, it looks quite dirty, just like it is crying for a wash me please ;)
It´s the last image out of this series (uhmm, not really, I forgot to post #III ). An uprising thunderstorm urged me to leave as quick as possible. So I took the last chance and made a quick 60 seconds exposurealread... more »

Bülk II

From last friday´s visit to Bülk / Strande near Kiel as seen from the Lighthouse of Bülk towards the Kiel Lighthouse on the left, just before a thunderstorm raised in the back of me.

I used the same technique as with the first image from Bülk, 302 seconds exposure, Heliopan 4-stops ND plus LEE Big Stopper plus Hitech 1.2 GND soft.

Edit: Interestingly this image made it onto the front page of flickr, I am really excited :-)
