"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." -Lao Tzu
This handmade, leather journal was carefully planned and co-created for a 7th wedding anniversary. I was contacted by the wife who wanted a custom journal made for her husband. The traditional gifts for the 7th wedding anniversary are wool or copper. I was asked to incorporate both. Her husband likes earthy colors (he was initially drawn to my work because of the coffee bag books), and she wanted the quote on the first page. The word "journey" is hand-stitch on environmentally-friendly, 100% wool in a copper colored thread. The center closure is copper. I also really like that it is a circle since that echoes both wedding rings and the idea of a journey. Their anniversary was earlier this week, and I received the kindest email from her husband once he received it:
"I just received my 7th... more »

In honor of Derby and #booksaturday ...
This is a horse photo album that I created for my younger cousin. She is using it as a scrapbook to put pictures in of her and her horses. The pages are acid-free, which means that her photos won't yellow over time. Each page was individually crafted so that she can add pictures without the book getting bulky. It will naturally expand for her and become a keepsake.

Happy Earth Day!
Love the quick profit, the annual raise,
vacation with pay. Want more
of everything ready-made. Be afraid
to know your neighbors and to die.
And you will have a window in your head.
Not even your future will be a mystery
any more. Your mind will be punched in a card
and shut away in a little drawer.
When they want you to buy something
they will call you. When they want you
to die for profit they will let you know.
So, friends, every day do something
that won't compute. Love the Lord.
Love the world. Work for nothing.
Take all that you have and be poor.
Love someone who does not deserve it.
Denounce the government and embrace
the flag. Hope to live in that free
republic for which it stands.
Give your approval to all you cannot
understand. Praise ignorance, for what man... more »

This journal was created as a travel journal. The recipient is going on a trip to Mexico, and the person who gave it wanted her to be able to record her experiences and thoughts along the way.

for #booksaturday : This book was created for a lady who is heading to Rwanda this summer to meet her adopted son. Her circumstance is quite unique and she is planning on making annual trips there. This journal is meant to accompany her and allow her to record her story. It is created from repurposed leather and archival, recycled paper. The lettering is handstitched, and the book is handbound using a variation of longstitch.

I've got several favorite parts of this, but I especially like where he talks about head cases and how some people view their bodies as vehicles for their head. While it is meant as a joke, it is so incredibly accurate.

Happy Spring Equinox!
Have you heard of "imaginal cells"? They are the cells that occur in a chrysalis during the time that a caterpillar is transforming into a butterfly. These cells are completely different from the caterpillar’s cells and vibrate at a different frequency. It makes me think about our "imaginal cells", the part of us that knows that we are more than we appear. This is the aspect in us that beckons us to wake up, to see more, to step into our larger selves. In caterpillars, these cells are initially attacked by the caterpillar's immune system and are seen as enemies because they are unfamiliar. However, the imaginal cells persist. They foresee that the caterpillar is more than it seems. We are the same. We are more than culture tells us, more than our families and teachers teach us. If we want to be able to actualize all of this potential w... more »

Welcome to my first official e-reader sleeve! This one was a custom order with a flower design for a kindle. The outside is leather and has a pocket that can be used for a charger, paper and pen, or something else all together. The kindle fits nicely inside where it is padded with eco-felt. Eco-felt is 100% tan wool with no extra processing. There are no dye’s and the wool is naturally flame retardant. The kindle will stay in securely with a flap and leather tie that goes around a handmade wooden button. I've been asked to create these for awhile now so I'm excited to finally be able to do so. My big hang-up was finding the right kind of padding. Once I discovered this particular felt, it was just a matter of prototyping. Thankfully, a teacher requested one, which gave me a bit of a push to get it developed and created.

This customized book was created for a lady who wants it for plant data that she is collecting. It has lined paper and alphabetical tabs. The tabs will make it so that she can easily look up specific species, recipies, and the like. This is the first book that I've put tabs in like this, and I'm pleased with how it turned out.

I just completed this custom Celtic book necklace. It is over-sized based on what I usually do at 1.5 x 2.25 inches with 60 blank acid-free pages. Both the leather and the textblock are recycled. The binding is a combination of a couple of traditional binding methods along with my own interpretation. The directive was an extra-large book necklace with green leather and a triskelion. Also in the request was wanting something that was "distinctly Oesch". I really enjoyed creating this little treasure and think it would be perfect for someone into Irish mythology or St. Patrick's Day.

I'm thrilled to finally get these fabulous photos! I was asked to assist in multiple aspects of a wedding last fall. For the bride, I created a leather guestbook with the bride and groom's initials on the front, a wedding banner that went across the front of their reception table, and 35 mini books to go on each table at the reception for guests to write advice and notes in. I was also contacted by the Maid of Honor who asked that I create a shirt for the bachelorette party. Both the banner and the letters on the tank top are created from linen and are stitched down. Yes, I drew and hand-cut each of those letters before stitching all the way around each of them! The font was one that the bride asked for, and I was able to recreate.

This letter is so gorgeous! How significant it is to go back and comfort our younger selves and encourage them (us) to heal as deeply as we were wounded. Her words are striking, and I love this idea of writing to our younger (less knowing, more vulnerable) selves.
