Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/2)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca  #sharedcircles #circles #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:30:374321234895CC G+

Be carreful, this article may put a large smile on your face. It definitely worked for me!

_Sometimes it seems that our entire economy is based on distracting women from their blessings. Producers of STUFF NEED to find 10,000 ways to make women feel less than about our clothes, kitchens, selves so that we will keep buying more. So maybe freeing ourselves just a little from the Tyranny of Trend is a women’s issue – because we certainly aren’t going to get much world changing done if we spend all of our time and money on wardrobe and kitchen changing._

The "perspectacles" you need to wear to love what you have.

I don't love where this post ended up, but the tour of the kitchen and the perspective on all we have (and may take for granted) is essential reading for anyone who has dreamed of what the Joneses are doing. ___Be carreful, this article may put a large smile on your face. I knew Hippos were really dangerous big animals, but 2 900 people killed every year is a lot!

The perceived danger of sharks may be a little skewed. You're statistically more likely to die from a falling coconut, lightning, icicles, vending machines and rollercoasters than from a shark attack.

#scienceeveryday

Maryam Mirzakhani won the Fields medal yesterday.

As a child in Tehran, she didn't intend to become a mathematician - she just wanted to read every book she could find!  She also watched television biographies of famous women like Marie Curie and Helen Keller.  She started wanting to do something great... maybe become a writer.

She finished elementary school while the Iran-Iraq war was ending, and took a test that got her into a special middle school for girls.  She did poorly in math her first year, and it undermined her confidence.  “I lost my interest in math," she said.

But the next year she had a better teacher, and she fell in love with the subject.  She and a friend became the first women on Iranian math Olympiad team.  She won a gold medal the first year, and got a perfect score the next year.

After getting finishing her undergraduate work at Sharif University in Tehran in 1999, she went on to grad school at Harvard.  There she met Curtis McMullen, a Fields medalist who works on hyperbolic geometry and related topics.

Hyperbolic geometry is about curved surfaces where the angles of a triangle add up to less than 180 degrees, like the surface of a saddle.  It's more interesting than Euclidean geometry, or the geometry of a sphere.  One reason is that if you have a doughnut-shaped thing with 2 or more holes, there are many ways to give it a hyperbolic geometry where its curvature is the same at each point.  These shapes stand at the meeting-point of many roads in math.  They are simple enough that we can understand them in amazing detail - yet complicated enough to provoke endless study.

Maryam Mirzakhani took a course from McMullen and started asking him lots of questions.  “She had a sort of daring imagination,” he later said.  “She would formulate in her mind an imaginary picture of what must be going on, then come to my office and describe it. At the end, she would turn to me and say, ‘Is it right?’ I was always very flattered that she thought I would know.”

Here's a question nobody knew the answer to.  If an ant walks on a flat Euclidean plane never turning right or left, it'll move along a straight line and never get back where it started.  If it does this on a sphere, it will get back where it started: it will go around a circle.  If it does this on a hyperbolic surface, it may or may not get back where it started.  If it gets back to where it started, facing the same direction, the curve it moves along is called a closed geodesic.

The ant can go around a closed geodesic over and over.  But say we let it go around just once: then we call its path a simple closed geodesic.    We can measure the length of this curve.  And we can ask: how many simple closed geodesics are there with length less than some number L?

There are always only finitely many - unlike on the sphere, where the ant can march off in any direction and get back where it started after a certain distance.  But how many?

In her Ph.D. thesis, Mirzakhani figured out a formula for how many.  It's not an exact formula, just an 'asymptotic' one, an approximation that becomes good when L becomes large.  She showed the number of simple closed geodesics of length less than L is asymptotic to some number times L to the power 6g-6, where g is the number of holes in your doughnut.

She boiled her proof down to a 29-page argument, which was published in one of the most prestigious math journals:

• Maryam Mirzakhani, Growth of the number of simple closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces, Annals of Mathematics 168 (2008), 97–125, http://annals.math.princeton.edu/wp-content/uploads/annals-v168-n1-p03.pdf.

This is a classic piece of math: simple yet deep.  The statement is simple, but the proof uses many branches of math that meet at this crossroads.

What matters is not just knowing that the statement is true: it's the new view of reality you gain by understanding why it's true.   I don't understand why this particular result is true, but I know that's how it works.  For example, her ideas also gave here a new proof of a conjecture by the physicist Edward Witten, which came up in his work on string theory!

This is just one of the first things Mirzakhani did.  She's now a professor at Stanford.

"I don't have any particular recipe," she said.  "It is the reason why doing research is challenging as well as attractive. It is like being lost in a jungle and trying to use all the knowledge that you can gather to come up with some new tricks, and with some luck you might find a way out."

She has a lot left to think about.  There are problems she has been thinking about for more than a decade. "And still there’s not much I can do about them," she said.

"I can see that without being excited mathematics can look pointless and cold. The beauty of mathematics only shows itself to more patient followers."

I got some of my quotes from here:

http://www.simonsfoundation.org/quanta/20140812-a-tenacious-explorer-of-abstract-surfaces/

and some from here:

They're both fun to read.

The hypersnake versus the moiré eel

This animated gif is cool, but here's something much cooler:

It starts out intense... and then keeps getting more so.

You can control the shape of the little rectangles by moving your cursor over the screen.  Try to keep your eye on just one little rectangle!  It moves up and down, not very fast... but sometimes it's impossible to keep your eye on it, because all the rectangles together produce patterns that grab your attention.  These are called moiré patterns.

I think the 'hypersnake' here is attention-grabbing because your brain has parts that are good at detecting snakes even before you are conscious of it.  Your amygdala is one of these parts:

I think the 'hypersnake' here is attention-grabbing because your brain has parts that are good at detecting snakes even before you are conscious of it.  Your amygdala is one of these parts:

Information from an external stimulus reaches the amygdala in two different ways: by a short, fast, but imprecise route, directly from the thalamus; and by a long, slow, but precise route, by way of the cortex.

It is the short, more direct route that lets us start preparing for a potential danger before we even know exactly what it is. In some situations, these precious fractions of a second can mean the difference between life and death.

Here is an example. Suppose you are walking through a forest when you suddenly see a long, narrow shape coiled up at your feet. This snake-like shape very quickly, via the short route, sets in motion the physiological reactions of fear that are so useful for mobilizing you to face the danger. But this same visual stimulus, after passing through the thalamus, will also be relayed to your cortex. A few fractions of a second later, the cortex, thanks to its discriminatory faculty, will realize that the shape you thought was a snake was really just a discarded piece of garden hose. Your heart will then stop racing, and you will just have had a moment’s scare.

The 'moiré eel' was made by Darius Bacon.  You can see more of his stuff here:

http://wry.me/blog/

Puzzle: who made the 'hypersnake' here?  I don't know!  A Google image search shows it on many websites, but I haven't found one that credits the inventor.  Naughty!

A really great idea in a lovely city!

Roughly a year ago, I got an idea: take a photo once a month, on a clear(ish) day at noon, for a whole year. I wanted to capture the seasonal change. I chose this location as I've always seen this tree become very colorful in the Fall, and the one behind it blooms in the spring. Sadly, this winter saw almost zero snow accumulation.

Keep an eye on the building/tree shadows, as they creep along with the shorter/longer days.

I'd also recommend going full screen, then scrolling through with the arrow keys. Hold down the right arrow (after they've all loaded) to make an interesting time-lapse movie___A really great idea in a lovely city!

To paraphrase Abe Lincoln, you cannot screw all of the people all of the time. We're there. All we lack is a major precipitant – our Tunisian fruit seller. When it happens the revolution will be deep and lasting."

The Arab spring analogy has its negatives. So far, there really isn't much to root for. I want to know what's to stop this revolution from turning into a violent, destructive mess. Steele is characteristically optimistic. "I have struggled with this question. What I see happening is an end to national dictat and the emergence of bottom-up clarity, diversity, integrity, and sustainability.

Individual towns across the USA are now nullifying federal and state regulations - for example gag laws on animal cruelty, blanket permissions for fracking. Those such as my colleague Parag Khanna that speak to a new era of city-states are correct in my view. Top down power has failed in a most spectacular manner, and bottom-up consensus power is emergent. 'Not in my neighborhood' is beginning to trump 'Because I say so.' The one unlimited resource we have on the planet is the human brain – the current strategy of 1% capitalism is failing because it is killing the Golden Goose at multiple levels.

Unfortunately, the gap between those with money and power and those who actually know what they are talking about has grown catastrophic. The rich are surrounded by sycophants and pretenders whose continued employment demands that they not question the premises. As Larry Summers lectured Elizabeth Warren, 'insiders do not criticise insiders.'

"But how can activists actually start moving toward the open source vision now? "For starters, there are eight 'tribes' that among them can bring together all relevant information: academia, civil society including labor unions and religions, commerce especially small business, government especially local, law enforcement, media, military, and non-government/non-profit.

At every level from local to global, across every mission area, we need to create stewardship councils integrating personalities and information from all eight tribes. We don't need to wait around for someone else to get started. All of us who recognise the vitality of this possibility can begin creating these new grassroots structures from the bottom-up, right now."

So how does open source everything have the potential to 're-engineer the Earth'? For me, this is the most important question, and Steele's answer is inspiring. "Open Source Everything overturns top-down 'because I say so at the point of a gun' power. Open Source Everything makes truth rather than violence the currency of power. Open Source Everything demands that true cost economics and the indigenous concept of 'seventh generation thinking' – how will this affect society 200 years ahead – become central.

Most of our problems today can be traced to the ascendance of unilateral militarism, virtual colonialism, and predatory capitalism, all based on force and lies and encroachment on the commons. The national security state works for the City of London and Wall Street – both are about to be toppled by a combination of Eastern alternative banking and alternative international development capabilities, and individuals who recognise that they have the power to pull their money out of the banks and not buy the consumer goods that subsidise corruption and the concentration of wealth. The opportunity to take back the commons for the benefit of humanity as a whole is open – here and now."

For Steele, the open source revolution is inevitable, simply because the demise of the system presided over by the 1% cannot be stopped – and because the alternatives to reclaiming the commons are too dismal to contemplate. We have no choice but to step up."

These hygroscopic scaffolds are made possible by chemically altering the base of the forests to be hydrophobic and the tops to by hydrophilic, which attracts water molecules and keeps them there - this turns out to be a passive feature (requires no energy) and simply squeezing the material can release the water for it to be used again. 25% of the material’s mass in water can be absorbed in arid air, growing to 80% in humid air. Scaling-up to useful volumes is a problem that needs addressing however. How about covering your house in the material to achieve water independence? What about altering the chemistry so that carbon dioxide or other gases are absorbed to be used as productive building blocks?

First, a standard sewing machine was used to create a conductive wire zig-zag pattern embedded into a flexible polymer; the wire and polymer can deform and stretch repeatedly around novel shapes http://singularityhub.com/2014/06/10/simple-sewing-machine-has-high-tech-role-in-future-soft-machines/. Sensors were embedded into the wire, allowing flexible sensor networks or meshes to be wrapped around organs for example, with the proof-of-concept used to wrap a urinary catheter balloon - such flexible designs will be important for interfacing with the human body. Second, better devices for emitting and detecting scattered light from tissues have been developed that allow better sensing and measurement of glucose, dehydration, and pulse levels; all features that are starting to make their way into wearable devices http://phys.org/news/2014-06-biometric-non-invasively-glucose-dehydration-pulse.html.

3. Better Polariton Lasers.
A new polariton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polariton) laser has been created that works at room temperature and is fueled by electricity rather than light; both significant semiconductor advances that bring polariton lasers closer to real-world applications than they ever have previously http://phys.org/news/2014-06-laser-like-1000x-power.html. Polariton lasers achieve ultra-low thresholds for lasing of light, capable of producing fainter lasers that require 250 times less electricity to operate and which could power on-chip laser connections to replace wires for smaller, faster, and more energy efficient electronics.

4. Rapid Self Assembly of Wafer-Scale Nanoparticle Films.
A new technique allows nanoparticle arrays to rapidly self-assemble over large macroscopic distances in less than a minute http://newscenter.lbl.gov/2014/06/09/nanoparticle-thin-films-that-self-assemble-in-one-minute/. The materials involved include gold nanoparticles, block copolymers, and certain solvents and result in the formation of ordered hierarchically-structured thin films composed of nanocomposites. Such films have the potential to be used to create optical coatings for a range of applications and even metamaterial coatings for more exotic and useful applications. Think on that: precise nanostructures assembled over comparatively huge macroscopic distances. The group plan to create a library of different materials with different properties based on manipulating the solvent, nanoparticle, and block monomer composition to allow a diverse range of applications to be explored.

5. Cheaper Medical Hardware.
A couple of advances in reducing the costs of medical hardware this week. First, neuroscientists release designs for open source neural recording hardware called Open Ephys in order to bring the cost of equipment down from $60k to $3k and helping to drive further innovation http://spectrum.ieee.org/biomedical/devices/neuroscientists-join-the-opensource-hardware-movement. And in IVF news a complete IVF lab has been shrunk down to fit inside a shoebox (I wonder how long until it fits on a chip?), and cheaply creates the same necessary conditions as you’d get in a multi-million dollar lab http://www.theverge.com/2014/6/10/5793872/a-low-tech-breakthrough-could-put-in-vitro-fertilization-in-reach-for with the proof-of-concept of course being the existance of 16 babies successfully born with the aid of the device.

6. Carbon Nanotube Fuel Cells and Terahertz Sensors.
A new chemical vapour deposition method allows for the fabrication of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube - graphene hybrid materials that exhibit superior catalytic capacity for the function of regenerative fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries http://www.nanowerk.com/spotlight/spotid=35950.php. Meanwhile, thin films of metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes have been demonstrated as exceptional photodetectors for light in terahertz wavelengths, offering a promising new avenue to develop scanners for security, food spoilage, and a range of biomedical applications http://phys.org/news/2014-06-terahertz-detectors-carbon-nanotubes-mris.html.

7. DIY DNA Sequencing of a Fetus Before Birth.
For the first time an unborn fetus has had its whole genome sequenced in the third trimester, well before its subsequent healthy birth http://www.technologyreview.com/news/527936/for-one-baby-life-begins-with-genome-revealed/. Further, this was done in a DIY fashion by the father - who admittedly has a strong genetics research background - after a conventional CVS test obtained a small sample of the placenta, and the unused / untested portion of which was placed into a spare slot in a high speed DNA sequencing machine. While this is at the high end of DIY Bio, this capability will continue to grow more broadly available - having your unborn fetus sequenced within the first trimester will be common and routine in future.

8. Mimicking The Retina with Curved CMOS Image Sensors.
A new process enables the mass-fabrication of curved CMOS image sensors for use in cameras http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/semiconductors/devices/sony-creates-curved-cmos-sensors-that-mimic-the-eye. The curved sensors achieve the same curvature as the human eye, have been made in DSLR and mobile phone sensor sizes, allows simpler optics and lenses to be used as well as larger apertures to let in more light. The structure happens to reduce signal noise and improve sensitivity to light. Advances in flexible electronics should make such improved sensors even cheaper and more robust. In related retinal news miniature human retinas sensitive to light have been grown in a dish - another advance in tissue engineering http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-06/jhm-ruh060914.php.

9. New Generation of Switchable Thin Films.
New thin films that comprise a layer of lipid and a layer of nanoparticles attached to DNA molecules of defined sequences undergoes a phase transition, being switched between one state and another, with the addition of salt http://phys.org/news/2014-06-dna-linked-nanoparticles-switchable-thin-liquid.html. The addition of salt causes the DNA molecules of neighbouring nanoparticles to link up and form a network mesh, quickly and drastically altering the mechanical properties of the film. Such a film might allow for switchable membranes or in a microfluidic example could allow for selective and controllable filters for different molecules. Changing the chemistry of the nanoparticles and DNA might also allow stimuli other than salt to induce the same change.

10. HP Bets the Company on Transformative Computing Architecture.
This week HP unveiled a new processing architecture called The Machine that consolidates the company’s many years of research and development on special-purpose cores, photonics interconnect links, and memristor unified memory http://www.engadget.com/2014/06/11/hp-the-machine/. Embodied in server hardware the architecture would be 6 times more powerful and use 80 times less energy, and there are also designs to achieve similar capabilities for laptops and smart phones. While samples won’t be ready until 2015, and devices not shipping until 2018, this still represents a big move by HP and it is good - after watching years of decline - to see the company making such a big bet on something powerfully new and better and potentially transformative, rather than the usual innovation by iteration that many companies often embody.

In 2013 The Ocean Cleanup was founded, a foundation focused on developing technologies to extract, prevent and intercept plastic pollution. Working to prove the feasibility of his concept, Boyan currently leads a team of approximately 100 volunteers, and temporarily paused his Aerospace Engineering study to completely focus his efforts on The Ocean Cleanup.

The next phase we are about to enter is a crucial step in The Ocean Cleanup project; through a series of up-scaled tests, The Ocean Cleanup will work towards a large-scale and fully operational pilot, enabling us to further optimize and fine-tune the passive clean-up concept.

This is where we need your support.

You can’t know what you’re going to do with your life right now, because you don’t know who you’re going to be, what you’ll be able to do, what you’ll be passionate about, who you’ll meet, what opportunities will come up, or what the world will be like. But you do know this: if you are prepared, you can do anything you want.

Prepare yourself by learning about your mind, becoming trustworthy, building things, overcoming procrastination, getting good at discomfort and uncertainty.

Crowdfounding is the future!

Citizen scientists can take over 36-year-old satellite, NASA says

"We have a chance to engage a new generation of citizen scientists through this creative effort to recapture the ISEE-3 spacecraft as it zips by the Earth this summer,” John Grunsfeld, NASA’s associate administrator for science, said in a statement. The NASA agreement gives Skycorp Inc, a California company working with the citizen scientists, permission to attempt to contact and possibly command and control the satellite, which is believed to still have fuel and working scientific instruments.

“Our plan is simple: we intend to contact the ISEE-3 spacecraft, command it to fire its engines and enter an orbit near Earth, and then resume its original mission,” Keith Cowing, a former NASA engineer who runs the NASA Watch website, wrote in a project status report on Wednesday."

Photoshop applied on art

Photoshop is applied on every woman's body we see nowadays. So someone did it to classic painting.

It just feels a lot more ridicoulous. We learn to look at these painting and see how beautiful they are. And they just look like normal women!
