NASA moves to Linux
“We migrated key functions from Windows to Linux because we needed an operating system that was stable and reliable – one that would give us in-house control. So if we needed to patch, adjust or adapt, we could.”

Is winning all that counts? Are you absolutely sure about that?
Very little has been said about this…..On December 2, Basque athlete Iván Fernández Anaya was competing in a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarre. He was running second, some distance behind race leader Abel Mutai - bronze medalist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Olympics. As they entered the finishing straight, he saw the Kenyan runner - the certain winner of the race - mistakenly pull up about 10 meters before the finish, thinking he had already crossed the line.
Fernández Anaya quickly caught up with him, but instead of exploiting Mutai's mistake to speed past and claim an unlikely victory, he stayed behind and, using gestures, guided the Kenyan to the line and let him cross first.

Forget Print-on-Demand -- Now There's Write-on-Demand
A tech-savvy economist has developed a software system that can write books about specific subjects in about 20 minutes. The patented algorithms have so far generated hundreds of thousands of books, with Amazon listing over 100,000. Originally focused on arcane scientific subjects, the system is now going to try its digital hand at genre fiction--starting with romance novels.

Victoria Police say - Don't use Apple Maps app.
From the news report: "Victoria Police say that in the past two months they have rescued six people who were lost in the Murray Sunset National Park while trying to get to Mildura - more than 70km away.
Inspector Simon Clemence says he is concerned people using the Apple Maps app could find themselves in trouble.
"If it was a 45-degree day, someone could actually die," he said.
"It's quite a dangerous situation, so we would be calling for people not to use the new Apple iPhone mapping system if they're travelling from South Australia to Mildura.""

The Ktrak is a patented wheel system that turns a mountain bike into a pedal-powered snow machine and all terrain vehicle. Created by Kyle Reeves, the biking innovation is a kit that can attach to the rear of any mountain bike. It creates traction on previously ‘unridable’ surfaces such as snow or sand, turning your bike into a snow or sand plough.

Status of 'Daemon' Movie
Lots of you have asked me what's going on with the motion picture adaptation of my book, Daemon. Here's an update: after having been optioned four years ago by a major studio, the film rights will likely revert back to me on December 8th.
I've been talking with several interested parties (not all of them in Hollywood), and I'll make a public announcement when a new agreement is reached.

<advanced prosthetic limbs>
The human arm is an incredibly versatile biological machine: it is strong enough to push open doors or lift heavy boxes, yet also enables movement precise enough to allow us to write, or thread a needle. Those who have lost an arm must relearn how to mimic all of these actions in a different way.
As the technology behind prosthetic limbs advances, prosthetics are able to more and more closely approximate the human limb they're substituting for. The results, as you can see in this video, show just how far this technology has come.

+Malte Ubl:
"The difference between IE and all other modern browser is that IE still has versions. Nobody gives a shit anymore about which Chrome or Firefox version you run, but with IE there is still IE10 which will be a painful legacy browser in 4 years, being the final version available for Windows 7 with 70% of computers in the world not eligible for automatic upgrade to a new version. It is sad that it is so easy to see the future."

Is it now a compliment if someone calls you a "geek" or a "nerd?"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20325517
I'd like to think that the bit may have flipped, so to speak, in how pop culture perceives either category …but then I have acknowledge that, as a self-identified geek, I'm biased here.
When I hear "nerd" I think of a person who has immense quantitative intelligence but has some degree of social awkwardness.
Thankfully, I've matured a lot in the past two decades, but it came at the price of a lot of "growth experiences" -- a neat euphemism for social mistakes.
There's some crossover with how I think of "geeks" but it doesn't carry the negative connotation, at least to my ear.
On the one hand, I'd say that I'm a geeky because of the things I par... more »
