Covered the Annual Cuba Rail Jam for Canta Magazine the other night.  Pretty amazing event.  Glad I had a photographer tho, 'cos my poor little 1000D couldn't really handle the weird lighting.

Google Glasses have a mini-trackpad.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin revealed on a Current TV show hosted by California Lieutenant Governor and former San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom that the experimental Google Glasses use a tiny black trackpad as a control.

You swipe in one direction to view a picture gallery, and up or down to exit and enter galleries, for example.

The episode will air Friday.

Here comes the video: http://topicfire.com/share/Confirmed-Google-Glasses-Use-a-Trackpad-VIDEO-19958151.html

Sometimes the best camera is the one at hand... and in this case, I usually only carry a 3mp phone camera. You can actually do a fair bit with it (filters do help of course).

Supposed to be studying, which of course, means it's time to procrastinate!

Just scrolling through my old photos and found this heavily edited number. Funny story goes with it actually. A cop saw me setting up the tripod and pulled over to check out what was going on, he must have thought I was being a peeping tom.

National Geographic Goes in The Womb!

National Geographic released a very interesting book for animal lovers. In the Womb: Animals by Michael Sims, explores the fascinating development from conception to birth of a golden retriever, a bottlenose dolphin, and an Asian elephant.

Beautifully illustrated with ultrasound images of these animals as embryos and fetuses, the book highlights the development of unique physical characteristics that the animals will come to rely on once out of womb.

For example, one section showcases the elephant fetus after four months. At this point, the trunk is recognizable, but it will need the full 18 more months in the womb to continue developing. Once out of the womb, the elephant will use this strong, highly dexterous snout to pick foliage, carry objects, suck water, and use as a snorkel while swimming.

End of the Journey

Found this poor wee seal at Birdling's Flat last week. Doesn't seem right that it died on land, wanted to give it a proper sea burial, but she was well decomposed.

Hope I haven't disgusted anyone!

New Zealand Roadside

Sarah and I went for an impromptu day trip last week, ended up at Birdlings Flat in South Canterbury. The area is amazing, hilly ranges right next to the ocean.

This particular hilly range was right on the side of the road, some pretty cool driving scenery. Had to hike up a wee bit to get the shot, she was a steep one - that herd of cows in the distance must be fit!

Haven't really shot a landscape before this, was a lot of fun. Edited in Lightroom 2.

The 10K Giveaway

Last week I announced a canvas print giveaway to celebrate breaking the 10,000 followers mark.

I figured that I had finally found a use for our +Sisson Fresh New Zealand Images business page and decided to host it over there.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, I was wrong. I have been notified that it is a breach of my TOS to run a sweepstake or competition directly on a page (somehow I must have missed this when reading the document ;-)

So, I am having to change direction a little here.

I personally am going to give away a 'Midi' sized canvas print of 'Clearing Storm, Wakatipu', valued at $NZ 350. I will even pay the shipping - personally, out of my own pocket.

Seeing as I (personally) will be running the competition I can dispense with robust methodology for drawing the... more »

Been playing with post-production a little bit lately. Here's an attempt at partial colourization (is that what it's called?), was loads of fun!

The model is my baby sister (Abigail), who was trying out a new pram and dress she'd been given for Christmas.

Usually we go the other way - converting colour photos to monochrome - but this project on display here, is actually quite fascinating. Turning famous monochrome photos into colour photos. And done very well - a splendid piece of work in my opinion. Take a look.

-- Morning Moon --

Waited up to try some moon photography last night, only to discover (should have thought of this before I started) that my lens was WAY underpowered in the zoom department.

Didn't manage to get what I was going for at all - I just couldn't get close enough. Was forced to over-expose the shot, so you could see the surroundings. When the police showed up, I decided to call it a night (they seem to be a bit suspicious of photographers on the side of the road at 2am).

A motion shot from a work function yesterday. The flying fox was a slow one, we had to use a team of pullers and pushers to get Eddie fast enough.

These photographs by the Google car, and from Google Street View, are blowing my mind.

There's something so raw about them. Each of the random moments which are captured are so entirely natural, and human, and give us a glimpse into our world, as a whole. The photos here have been curated into by Jon Rafman an exhibit and book which you can find here: http://9-eyes.com/

Wow, just wow.

The "easy" way to disrupt the mobile market

I've been seeing stories for weeks on the less than amazon battery life of the iPhone 4S. Today Motorola announces the Droid RAZR, which is likely to also have less than stellar battery life. It's funny, all these companies tried to tell us that dual core phones would mean better battery life, yet it seems we are now closer than ever to being umbilically attached to that socket on the wall.

Now, there's even more noise coming as Android manufacturers are prepping the first wave of Quad Core phones. I can't help but laugh at this, especially the notion that battery life will get even better. It's a sad joke at best, and yet here the gearheads sit about how amazing it's going to be.

You want to really disrupt the mobile market? Release a phone that gets you 72 hours of battery life at a... more »

I am pretty much opening this thread to discuss concepts of God in a Christian sense, good and evil, a personal relationship with God and whether that can be accurately reflected in a larger group. Feel free to comment but please commit no personal attacks, this is a purely philosophical and theological discussion.

Writing an assignment on Google+ at the moment, basically asking whether it's completing what it set out to do - use circles, sparks and hangouts to make a social network that reflects real-life social communication.

It's early days yet, but do you think it's reaching that goal - has it changed the way you use or view social media? Anyone made use of hangouts or sparks yet?

Traits of Successful Bloggers #12 (Final) - Curiosity

The last trait I want to cover in this series is one that I see in many great bloggers - a restlessness and a dissatisfaction with the current state of play in their world/blog/industry.

They are not content to sit comfortably but are always exploring, pushing boundaries and experimenting.

They are curious people who are always asking ‘what if….?’ – a question that leads to all kinds of discoveries and possibilities that the rest of us could only dream of discovering.

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” – Walt Disney

"People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.
For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway."
