Erasing A CD With Electrical Current

This works by removing the reflective metallic layer on the disc, rendering it useless. The spark gap follows the path of least resistance. The CD recording medium is conductive, so it arcs to the nearest point, vaporizing it until nothing is left.

Since I always have a Gmail tab open anyway, this little trick is always at the ready:

From within gmail, HOLD Shift+? and Gmail displays the keyboard shortcut menu.

I worship at the alter of Google Reader. I have a tab open to it pretty much whenever I am at my desk. It's UI is a bit dated and cluttered, so I'm stoked to see it getting some overdue love at last.

There's a venn diagram of functionality between G+, Reader, News, and Mail that could take over the world. I hope the googlers see it and are peddling towards it as hard as they can.

THE SITUATION

In Washington , DC , at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, this man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. So last week I put up my usual summary of top kernel contributors. I was somewhat amused to see Microsoft on the list by virtue of almost 350 cleanup patches to a single 15K-line staging driver, but I was a lot more interested in the long-term statistics - who has contributed to every kernel since 2.6.0 and such. So it has been interesting to see all the articles in the more mainstream press about the Microsoft number. There's a number of publications that have gotten a whole lot more traffic than we have out of our numbers.

That's life when you live behind a paywall, I guess; it doesn't really bug me. But I do worry, yet again, that focusing on changeset counts is perhaps not a helpful thing to be doing. Patch counts are an incredibly poor approximation for "valuable work done," and putting them into the news may well encourage developers and companies to inflate their... more »
