Neal Stephenson has joined Kim Stanley Robinson, Greg Bear, Vernor Vinge, Catherine Asaro and me -- along with several others -- in urging the renewal of a science fiction that talks about hope. (While delivering great action, peril and adventure.) Read about Neal's positive-thinking and uplifting Hieroglyph project…

Where #art and #science meet!
Artist Lori Tomita, from Yokohama, Japan
This particular artist takes dead creatures that he picks up from pet shops and/or fishermen and puts them to an awesome use.
He makes these super vibrant creations by putting the dead creature though a lengthy process that sometimes takes up to a year to do.
He first uses enzymes to break down the soft tissues and protein. That process leaves a transparent specimen to work with.
He then proceeds to dye the cartilage one color and the bones another color for a vibrant contrast.
He sells prints of his work and he also sells bottled specimens locally in Japan :)
View the rest of his awesome work here: http://www.shinsekai-th.com/en/top.php

What happens when you create a ballpit with some icebreakers written on things, put it in an urban center, and hang a sign inviting people to "Take A Seat - Make A Friend?"
Happyfeels. That's what happens. <3

Ode to Poop
This is a Korean children's book that belongs to my six-year-old son Marley. I am currently facing expulsion from +Allison Sekuler's Circle of Niceness (http://goo.gl/P8nUs) for quoting F. Scott Fitzgerald that "a drop of poop in a glass of water turns the whole glass into poop water" ( This Side of Poopy Paradise, page 143 ).
She has made the outlandish claim that "poop water is pretty bad, even to swim in." This book, particularly Image 8, where the little fish are following the hippo, saying "Nom, nom, nom. It's delicious!" demonstrates conclusively that poop is indeed quite natural and delicious (disclaimer: do not try this at home).
The next time you swim in a river, please remember that you are bathing in poop. The next time you take a dip in the ocean, please remember that the poop that goes into your mouth... more »

This video documents one physicists journey as he seeks to build the "perfect" machine to rid an Oreo of its creamy filing (and to learn robotics).
It is also a hilarious reminder that we all need to sometime Rub Goldberg our way out of something silly at least once in our lives.

M.I.T. Computer Program Reveals Invisible Motion in Video
Very interesting! I'd love to see more examples of this being used in the real world. Maybe even on plants and animals...
The amplification process is called Eulerian Video Magnification, and is the brainchild of a team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

Calvin and Hobbes Photoshopped into Real Life Scenes
These are awesome.
Redditor Nite4awk has created a smile-worthy set of photoshopped images that plant "too smart for his own good" Calvin and his partner-in-crime tiger, Hobbes, in a wide variety of real-life scenes.
All time favorite cartoonist of all time, Bill Watterson. And easily Gary Larson coming just a bit behind.

Inspirational stuff, thanks google!
Moonshots live in the gray area between audacious technology and pure science fiction. Instead of a mere 10% gain, a moonshot aims for a 10x improvement over what currently exists. The combination of a huge problem, a radical solution to that problem, and the breakthrough technology that just might make that solution possible, is the essence of a moonshot.

It's finally out.
I'm sitting here on a plane, flying to Minneapolis after signing 1280(!) books last night at the midnight release of A Memory of Light. That marks it as my largest signing ever, though a whole lot of readers (understandably) grabbed their pre-signed books and ran off to read them, rather than waiting for a personalization. [Assistant Peter's Note: Brandon wrote this yesterday. Today he's in Chicago.]
Harriet did a reading, which my good friend Earl filmed (along with the Q&A). I'm sure he plans to post that as soon as the editing is done, and we'll get you a link. I'll be doing many more signings and readings in the coming weeks. http://brandonsanderson.com/events (Of special note is the signing in Lexington, where the bookseller wanted me to let you know that he has been able to get Michael Whelan to send prints of the cover of A... more »

Further Up Yonder: A Message from ISS to All Humankind
NASA Television shares this inspiring production by Italian videomaker, Giacomo Sardelli, about the International Space Station, its inhabitants, and its role in space exploration.
Sardelli writes of the video, "I'm not the first one to use NASA's pictures taken from the International Space Station to craft a Timelapse video. You can find many of them on the Internet, that's where my inspiration came from. What I wanted to do, though, was to look beyond the intrinsic beauty of those pictures, and use them to tell a story and share the messages sent by the astronauts who worked on the station in the last 11 years."

Magnetically levitating graphite can be moved with laser
[...]Magnetic levitation has been demonstrated for a variety of objects, from trains to frogs, but so far no one has developed a practical maglev-based actuator that converts some external source of energy into motion. Now in a new study, researchers for the first time have used a laser to control the motion of a magnetically levitating graphite disk. By changing the disk's temperature, the laser can change the disk's levitation height and move it in a controlled direction, which has the potential to be scaled up and used as a light-driven human transportation system. Laser light or sunlight can also cause the levitating disk to rotate at over 200 rpm, which could lead to a new type of light energy conversion system.[...]
