A Cosmic Axion Background to explain excess X-rays from galaxy clusters
This paper that appeared on the ArXiv proposes an extremely intriguing link between questions in fundamental physics, early universe cosmology, and a longstanding discrepancy in the emission of X-rays from galaxy clusters.
An axion is a hypothetical particle that could be associated with a new degree of freedom, parametrizing the asymmetry of the laws of physics under left-right (parity) reflection. It was proposed in the context of the strong force, which appears exactly left-right symmetric despite accommodating departures from that symmetry, and with the weak force providing a stark demonstration that the laws can and do violate this left-right balance. Promoting this parity-breaking parameter to a dynamical field, the axion, provides an elegant explanation for why it seems to be exactly zero, when it has no ... more »

Comet PanSTARRS Anti-Tail
Image Credit & Copyright: Marco Fulle (INAF)
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130518.html
Once the famous sunset comet, PanSTARRS (C/2011 L4) is now visible all night from much of the northern hemisphere, bound for the outer solar system as it climbs high above the ecliptic plane. Dimmer and fading, the comet's broad dust tail is still growing, though. This widefield telescopic image was taken against the starry background of the constellation Cepheus on May 15. It shows the comet has developed an extensive anti-tail, dust trailing along the comet's orbit (to the left of the coma), stretching more than 3 degrees across the frame. Since the comet is just over 1.6 astronomical units from planet Earth, that corresponds to a distance of over 12 million kilometers. In late May Comet PanSTARRS will pass within a few degrees of the north celestial pole.

Some one mentioned GMO foods in response to one of my posts and it made me wonder is there any food that I eat that hasn't been modified in any way in the past centuries.
From the research I did I don't think there are. So this is a revelation, but not a surprise. I have no problem with science in improving the yield and quality of these foods.

The New Google+ interface (includes HINTS AND TIPS)
I thought I would write up a few changes, observations and hints and tips you may find of use.
#newlook #newgoogleplus #googleplusupdate
This now looks very similar across all devices. So whether you are using Chrome or Android (or iOS) you will find usuality and style to be almost the same.
I will focus on Google Chrome as this is where most of the changes have been, and forgive me for any errors/omissions as I am still working it all through...
Site structure:
The side bar of options for e.g. profile, communities, ‘what’s hot’ etc, is now a hover activated one.
The top bar of e.g. for a profile options for ‘about’ are now at the top of the page instead of being underneath the ‘cover photo’
Google+ Search is hidden at the top until you need it
