Unfortunately I'll be on the wrong side of the globe but for those of you in the Americas: Straighten up, pass a comb through your hair and please smile towards Saturn because it'll take a while before we have another chance!

SelectedPapers.net is a prototype system for discussing mathematics articles. It's "federated", in the sense that it doesn't actually host the discussions; just gathers and links discussions happening elsewhere (for now, essentially just google+). I hope it gets off the ground.

To use, just tag discussions with #spnetwork, and include the arXiv identifier (or DOI, or ...).

Wow, I would so love to see the Prez debate NSA-whistleblower Edward Snowden! This is a great petition.

Growing Trend Towards Open-Science

Good to hear, need to start spending more time there. Open-science IS THE FUTURE - one small component of OPEN KNOWLEDGE. Unfortunately nothing publishable for me (yet) and I never tracked any of the forestry research stats publications I co-authored back in the 90's. So pleased to see these global trends towards "open" models spreading everywhere! This IS the philosophy which I admired when I first learned about open source software more than 15 years ago and felt it would spread to other disciplines. Lucky guess...

How long would it take to count to one Googol?

This was precisely the question that my 6-year old daughter asked over breakfast. Naturally, as a mathematician, I was delighted to hear her ask such a question; certainly I was much more in my comfort zone than having the usual questions I try to deal with such as how babies are made and which hole they come out of...

I asked my daughter to make an initial estimate and she guessed around one month.
