There's an area of Killarney National Park, just in front of Muckross House, along the side of Muckross Lake, that is truly magical. It's a yew forest in shallow soil over limestone, which makes for a mossy wildness. (I believe parts of the movie Excalibur were filmed here.)

If the views of the lakes and mountains weren't enough, this enchanted wood should encourage you to visit Killarney.

Bring transparency to Wall Street and other political-corporate influencers by petitioning for this hack to Citizens United. Excerpt:

"This is our best shot to undermine Citizens United.

New Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chairwoman Mary Jo White is considering a rules change that would require corporations to disclose their political spending. The best part: this solution totally circumvents Congress, which is too flooded with corporate money to take action.

Already ALEC, the Chamber of Commerce, and major oil companies have begun to freak out about the possible change. (Which is usually a good sign we're doing something right.)

And the momentum is on our side. Already 500,000 Americans, along with legal scholars and 80 members of Congress, have announced their support. Please sign to the right to send a comment to the SEC in... more »

Don't Look Now, but Our Medicare Spending Projections Are Plummeting

Here's the story budget wonks will tell from today's Congressional Budget Office report: The deficit is poised to shrink to its lowest level since 2008. Good news? Yes, if you're a deficit hawk. Bad news? Yes, if you think (as I do) the deficit is falling too quickly, especially at a time of high unemployment and declining household debt.

Here's the story I wish more people would talk about: Our incredible shrinking Medicare projections. Since August, CBO has now revised down its projections of mandatory health care spending by nearly $500 billion, as Michael Linden pointed out. Since the 2010 CBO report, projected Medicare spending between 2013 and 2020 has fallen by just over $1 trillion ... or 16%.

Why should you care? Two reasons:

This is just astounding:

"If the current laws that govern federal taxes and spending do not change, the budget deficit will shrink this year to $642 billion, CBO estimates, the smallest shortfall since 2008. Relative to the size of the economy, the deficit this year -- at 4.0 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) -- will be less than half as large as the shortfall in 2009, which was 10.1 percent of GDP."

Thanks in large part to higher taxes on the wealthy, which Republicans said would not reduce the deficit, deficit reduction is picking up speed at a pace few could have predicted. We're now looking at over $400 billion in deficit reduction in just one year, and about $800 billion in deficit reduction since President Obama took office.

Let's say this plainly: for those who saw the federal budget deficit as a "problem," it's fair to say this... more »

Austerity: A Plan Used by Greedy Lying Bastards For Their Own Greedy Lying Self-Serving Purposes. That's the Fix the Debt Group.

Professor Kenneth P. Thomas, University of Missouri-St. Louis, joins Thom Hartmann. Austerity has been a total failure in Europe. Yet political elites here in the U.S. still think it's the best way to restart our sputtering economy. Are they really interested in "fixing the debt" or are they up to something more sinister?

One of the things brought up was a new study by the Institute for Policy Studies and Campaign for America's Future showing that the CEOs behind "Fix the Debt" have benefited from tax breaks for executive compensation to the tune of about $1 billion in 2009-11, for just those companies. This tax break lets companies count pay using stock options -- which doesn't cost the companies anything -- as if... more »

Travel Photography - Venice, Italy

Today’s featured image is a stunning shot of one of the most iconic and romantic cities in the world, Venice. The city itself is extremely unique, in fact Venice is made up of 118 small islands separated by a series of canals and linked by bridges. During the middle ages, the waterways of Venice were enhanced to produce the intricate series of canals that are still present today and provide the city’s main means of transportation.

The Grand Canal (Canal Grande) is the most significant of all these waterways and is the major traffic corridor through the city leading from the Santa Lucia railway station to Saint Mark Basin. Along the route, the banks of the Grand Canal are lined with some of the most spectacularly historic buildings which date from the 13th to the 18th century! As most of the palaces and historic buildings emerge directlyfro... more »

If austerity doesn’t work, what is the alternative? Spending sprees by already debt-ridden governments or a series of defaults in the developed world are hardly attractive options. But one does not have to be so ambitious. A simple rule would be Hippocratic: first, do no harm. The eurozone has consistently applied austerity, and it is now shrinking as a whole. The United States, by contrast, has not pursued austerity, and as a result it has cleaned up its balance sheets and is now able to grow. Yes, U.S. debt has increased, too, but growth eventually cures debt. Spending cuts, if they are simultaneous and large scale, will only add to the problem.

#eurocrisis

ECNO: The problem with that is that if the South hadn't cut spending sharply, their interest rates would have shot up to a point where growth would never have been able to reduce the debt...

Powell Memo: The Destruction of America and American Democracy

The Powell Memo (also known as the Powell Manifesto)

The Powell Memo was first published August 23, 1971

In 1971, Lewis Powell, then a corporate lawyer and member of the boards of 11 corporations, wrote a memo to his friend Eugene Sydnor, Jr., the Director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The memorandum was dated August 23, 1971, two months prior to Powell’s nomination by President Nixon to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Powell Memo did not become available to the public until long after his confirmation to the Court. It was leaked to Jack Anderson, a liberal syndicated columnist, who stirred interest in the document when he cited it as reason to doubt Powell’s legal objectivity. Anderson cautioned that Powell “might use his position on the Supreme Court to put his ideas into practice…inbehalf ... more »

Another celebrity or public person comes out of the closet to make the point that gay people are people too and to fight against those who seem to be making it their job to relegate homosexuals to second class status.

Meanwhile people like Cuccinelli who is planning to run for to become the next Republican Governor of Virginia and is already proposing making Oral Sex a FELONY in order to make gays uncomfortable.  Well, the problem with that plan is that it will make a lot of straight people uncomfortable too, and frankly I don't feel the government has any business criminalizing sex between consenting adults!

Over the weekend I was discussing this matter with a few people and someone suggested what we need is essentially an agreement among tens or hundreds of thousands of straight adults that we like oral sex and we don't want it criminalized.  She may have a point.  Thatmay... more »
