Natural History Museum in London. It's a wonderful place, but much better when you get away from the school groups.

Heading to see this in an hour. Who knew that cool things happened in London?

Cardiff castle. The decorations are amazing. Took an age to create and a lifetime to appreciate.

If traffic on Deerfoot is normally like that, then the city should use that spare $52m on extending the C-Train to the airport.

Saw this guy on a bus in Edmonton. There's a transistor wired in there and it looks like speaker cable to run a control line to it. I expect there's an LED as well. Modern magicians.

Just noticed that Google Now doesn't seem to be robust to time zones for flight notifications. My connection from LA is still half a day away. Gotta get there first.

How is this even possible? How can a law be passed that is redacted from the members of parliament that are supposed to be voting on it? This is a kick to democracy's genitals.

Final batch of cider just hit the bottles. This is a 1:3 pear and apple blend. Very light colour and just a bit of pear taste. It's quite dry, so most of the fruit flavour was lost during fermentation. I didn't get an initial measurement, so I don't have any idea how strong it'll be.

I absolutely hate giving out a Gross Misconduct. Even if I have all the justification in the world, it throws off my game and I replay the event in my head over and over.

Interesting interpretation of j/k scrolling with the #newgoogleplus layout. I can get used to it, but it was a bit jarring on the first go.

When we get away from black-and-white, yes-or-no, mine-or-yours answers to difficult problems, we find not just solutions but new opportunities.

One of the benefits of living away from major metropolitan areas is the lack of light pollution. This guy is based in Manawatu.

As a small league in our far-flung region of the south Pacific, we've always operated with a bit of a casual attitude towards communication. Rules are rules, but both skaters and refs are human and are capable of handling a 2-second factual question. I see a natural threshold after which the captain should be chatting with the HR: if the question has been answered and the answer doesn't jibe with the skater's perspective, then go get the captain.

Although this is framed in terms of cyclists, speed limits and on-street parking impacts on many parts of urban living and activities. WCC has already made moves towards lowering speed limits in town centres and has recently removed parking for bus lanes, both of which have been controversial.

I've seen a few variants on this argument, but this is a great comparison point for New Zealand at the moment. Earthquakes aren't as dangerous as our driving habits.

+Google+ What's the deal with j/k keys? (Context, Firefox/Linux) Sometimes scrolling items with j/k skips a post or seems to wrap around, which seems a bit wrong to me. Or if I hit home and go to the top, j/k will still pull me back to some arbitrary point (not always the last post I was on). Is this a bug? Please don't call it a feature.

A small set of photos from Makertorium, held at Te Papa on April 27th. It was a brilliant mix of techy, geeky and crafty design stuff. It was great to see such a great blend of both projects and attendees.

Water spots. Blasted water spots.
I've been using distilled water for mixing my chemistry and for the final wash before the stabiliser goes in. As it stands, there's 1 litre of tap water that is used for the pre-soak. Should I try distilled for that as well?
Assuming I don't get the water spots problem solved, I'll have to clean the negatives for scanning. I just had my first try at using isopropyl alcohol to clean the spots. First thing, don't use too much. What doesn't work is a cotton bud that's been dipped. That leaves whole drops of alcohol. What seems to work better is dipping the bud and letting a drop hit a microfibre cloth and gently wiping down the negative (shiny side only). Am I on the right track here? Is there a better way?

I'm a sucker for colourful sunrises, to the point where I'm considering building a weatherproof east-facing camera unit to attach to the roof of the house. Just cause.

What impresses me most about this article is the number of possibilities for tactical urbanism style projects. Wanna see how people would use a chair in a given space? Give them one.

I had an issue with flash triggering with my Mamiya C330 on the weekend. By the end of the shoot, I had decided that there's a poor connection between the sync port and cable. Is there any way to improve the connection?

The consultation on the Annual Plan should be on everyone's list of things to do this year. This is your chance to address individual issues and projects for the upcoming financial year. In my mind, this is just as important as voting for local government. This is your voice, in your words.

We have heard most of the bits of this before. It's really nothing new. However, seeing it all in one place, almost as a timeline, makes it a bit harder to miss the ongoing systematic failure.

Wellington water supply situation update – 12 April 2013
Small amounts of rain in our river water catchments have maintained river flows. We still believe that the need to use our storage lake to supplement low flows is about four weeks away in the event that we get little rain in that time. This view is still dependent on water use not rising sharply.
Water use has increased slightly since the ban was lifted. This weekend may see a more significant increase, as people attend to cleaning and maintenance jobs around their homes and gardens. We want to remind everyone to continue to use water sparingly. Rivers remain at low levels and just because the ban is lifted doesn’t mean it’s okay to go for broke with water.
We thank all water users for their continuing efforts to conserve.
The 14-day weather forecast indicates some showers this weekend, with moderate fall ... more »

This video is largely a sales pitch for a new type of design within New Zealand. On one hand, it's bold in the way it's not the status quo. On the other hand, it's pretty modest and completely achievable. It's worth discussing whether our traditional notions of what we want are still valid.

Jarrett is letting them off easy in my mind. Demand-responsive transit may be useful in areas where patronage statistics are indistinguishable from noise, which is surprisingly few services, but will pretty much always fail to provide a reliable service. As a result, it also destroys any benefit of network effects. If you want a useful service, don't think in terms of instantaneous demand, think in terms of statistical demand.

First, I can't imagine what it's like to be subjected to this. It sucks that it happens and bullshit like this should be smashed back to the stone age. Second, when at all possible, avoid transiting through the US. It's not worth the hassle.

Went for an early morning walk (skipping my early morning run) and decided to hit Evans Bay. Even at night, the Zephyrometer is a lovely sculpture.

I can't say that I've followed this story. I know the short story and that's about it. But I have a lot of respect for Rollins and I think he's on the right track.

So, how do you fix that? I’m just shooting rubber bands at the night sky but here are a few ideas: Put women’s studies in high school the curriculum from war heroes to politicians, writers, speakers, activists, revolutionaries and let young people understand that women have been kicking ass in high threat conditions for ages and they are worthy of respect.
Total sex ed in school. Learn how it all works. Learn what the definition of statutory rape is and that it is rape, that date rape is rape, that rape is rape.
...
Education, truth, respect, equality—these are the things that can get you from a to b very efficiently.
