Does anyone have recommendations for a database suited to log-like data? Write heavy, zero updates and will need to support moderately complex queries to facilitate some dashboards. PostgreSQL will probably be fine, but I thought it would be worthwhile to take a look around.

Do you know programming, and want to know more about this Python thing? This event is a 3 hour overview of the language. Programming experience in another language is assumed.

We'll be covering:

- its data types, syntax and idioms
- some things that make Python unique: iterators, being ultra-dynamic, coroutines, other goodness
- how to make it run fast
- how to integrate it into other environments, such as the JVM and the CLR

Thinking about reviving the Data Book Club idea using Google+ Hangouts now that I can schedule events in here. The in-person idea hasn't gained much traction (see http://www.meetup.com/data-book-club/), but the concept is quite cool. What do you think?

Learned a surprising amount about fusion power yesterday. Some interesting facts include the plasma shields are actually at room temperature, while the plasma is at around 100 million degrees C a few meters away.

Magnets keep the plasma from escaping, although turbulence can lead to breaches. The talks I attended yesterday werre mainly dealing with simulating the effects of turbulence using Europe's biggest supercomputers.

Also, it's possible to heat and crush particles into plasma with multiple lasers. That is, the photons from lasers pounding a tiny spec of deuterium can compress and heat it to a plasma state!

I've been thinking a little bit about the #Singularity. In particular, I've been concerned about the prosect of friendly AI. If you're not familiar with the problem, I guess you could call this the iRobot problem: We would like to constrain the ability for an artificial intelligence to destroy humanity.

There are significant doubts about the efficacy of any of the methods to do so. Any limitation we could place on an artificial intelligence would 1) a limit its potential benefits, 2) have its loopholes be undermined by the intelligence and/or 3) introduce unintended consequences.

I don't have the answer, but I feel like we need to give ourselves the best chance at providing solutions. Here are some things that I've come to believe upon reflection:

Maturity

There will be a adolescent stage for any new intelligence. A new intelligence will have... more »
