Besides the doodle for Edward Gorey's 88th birthday, the Google NZ homepage is also sporting a little red poppy for the 2 year anniversary of the devastating 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch that killed 185 people. Nice touch Google on a tough day for many here in NZ.

"One more year of numbers isn't in itself significant," GISS climatologist Gavin Schmidt said. "What matters is this decade is warmer than the last decade, and that decade was warmer than the decade before. The planet is warming. The reason it's warming is because we are pumping increasing amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere."

"This may be an uncomfortable truth, but it is one we ignore at our peril. The world's best scientists have been sounding the alarm for many years," he said. "There can be no looking away, no persisting with business as usual..."

Tend to agree - when they started the rapid updates and broke the add-on model it killed it for me. I do still keep a copy of Firefox around for local rendering of php files I'm coding (which Chrome still doesn't do! -grrr!) but that's it. Mozilla has a tough road ahead - on the desktop at least...

Good to see it's not just me who wants to rant about this! I like the idea of a single app for podcasts, but the lack of syncing playback positions to iTunes kills it for me. Not to mention duplicate entries in the library, no method to remove played episodes from the list, no notification of new episodes on the tile screen of the library... Until Apple fixes this, it's back to the old Music/Videos apps for me.

Tried out Google Navigation to/from work today. Brilliant. Flawless experience - stoked the phone GPS works so well, and having the street view pop-up near the destination is pure awesome.
Yo Goog, you can drop the beta tag for me. Kthxbye. ;)

Tracking a stolen phone - possible or too hard basket?
My old phone was stolen a couple of weeks ago, without a SIM in it (wife was inheriting and using on wifi only at time).
We changed her Google account password immediately, so presumably (hopefully!) the phone can't access my wife's Google account in any way. However, as it was linked to her Google Play account (presumably by a UUID of some sort) it is still listed alongside her replacement phone. Google Play can clearly still track the device and now says it was last used a few days ago on carrier 2Degrees. So, the thief/recipient has put a SIM in and is now using the phone...
What are the chances of getting info out of Google (like an IP for the device or other) and then getting 2Degrees to track the phone to pass on to police? While theoretically possible, is this actually doable or simply not ... more »

Nice look at the old and new Windows logos from The Windows Team Blog:
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/bloggingwindows/archive/2012/02/17/redesigning-the-windows-logo.aspx
Must say I'm surprised they're abandoning the basic windows flag (yes it's a flag imho despite what they say!) that's been with us since 3.1.
Regarding a new design, I like the concept proposed by Juan Perez at The Verge which still retains that classic flag shape in a more modern looking logo:

Morphed Integrated Microwave Imagery at CIMSS ftw!
This is one of the coolest tropical cyclone animations I've seen... The animation is centred on the eye of TC Jasmine and covers the last 48 hours as it passes north of New Caledonia and just south of Vanuatu.
