It is still save to trust Monsanto. Everyone else is against them, which is not fair at all. They do such a good job. If bees can get resistant to Roundup, people could be next. Wouldn't that be a blessing in the sky? All your veges can be loaded with Roundup and it wouldn't hurt you. Heaven is coming down to earth and you can thank Monsato. OK guys, on your knees.

More G+ style censorship on the net? If that happens, half (or more) of the value of Tumblr will be gone very soon. :)

When is the police getting tough on logging trucks? Accidents are an almost weekly occurrence. You wonder whether they get free firewood to turn a blind eye?

Max Residue Levels (MRLs) of pesticides in food as published in the EU. Question is whether this is being tested on a regular basis. People have the right to know what is in their food. Especially with GMO's, the MRLs could easily be exceeded. That may be the reason for Monsanto and others to block labelling as it would be easier to pick those products for testing.

The EU GMO register. Gives an idea of the kind of products to be aware of. Most of these products are also used in food and are authorized as food additives. Looking at the withdrawn list, it takes more than 5 years to remove traces of those products from the food chain. Sad that no reason for the withdrawal is given.

By surrendering to the big industrial suppliers, the risk of GMO products being included in olive oil have significantly increased. We all know that big companies always try to squeeze an extra dollar out of a product and adding some other, cheaper oils is a likely way of doing so. There are several candidates as is shown in the list here.

The army should be on trial here. The senior officers who didn't put systems in place to prevent these things from happening. The war is bad enough, but this is simply disgusting and to blame it on one man only is wrong. They all failed him.

New Zealand is a long way off from high-speed rail, but the cooperation talked about in the last part of the article is sourly missing. Here, buses and train compete on the same stretches, especially in the big cities. Trains should do the longer hauls from the suburbs to the city, buses should feed them and bring passengers back home from the stations.

Now how the hell do we get 300,000,000 people to use it?

Finally a way to fight back. Perhaps it will make the 'big ones' take note of what consumers want, rather than what their shareholders want.

Extremely low in essential minerals and high glyphosate, even as high as being many times over the level set by the EPA, which by itself are much higher than what is considered safe in Europe. Monsanto, DuPont and other GMO producers are killing America with the consent of the Government.

If it is bad for other animals and humans, don't you think it will be bad for bees?

Farmers should consider patenting the seeds that are a hybrid from non-GMO anf GMO crop. DuPont or Monsanto did not make those and they differ from their products and every seed will be unique. Go take a hike DuPont and Monsanto (and others that do the same)

Where is the research stating that bees are not dying from GMO derived high-fructose corn syrup? If bees are vulnerable, what does it do to people, or other animals in the long-run?

Where are Monsanto and DuPont when you really need them? Just a simple old-fashioned insecticide will do. Or is this industry too small to pay attention to? (Please don't come up with round-up resistant citrus trees.)

Just let it go for a while. I just heard that food shortage in the US will cause a revolution. When most have died down, just import some bees from Europe so you can start from fresh, assuming the revolution has also taken care of the big GMO companies like Monsanto and DuPont. Fresh means without these chemicals and without GMO.

When is the Government going to introduce supplier audits? They pet themselves on the back for doing such a good job, but they award large contracts based on financial competitiveness only. No process of auditing potential suppliers before awarding contracts.

Where is the research on GMO? This springtime in the US and bees have been fed (mostly) high-fructose corn syrup, most likely derived from GMO grown corn. If that syrup is of slightly different composition due to GMO, bees may not get enough energy out of it or may not be able to digest it properly. A weakening immune system makes them vulnerable to all kind of diseases. Wonder what GMO derived products do for humans.

Time for New Zealand to pay attention. We talk about global warming a lot, but where is the research, maps etc. that shows which areas of NZ are threatened and may disappear under water with half a meter or perhaps a meter of sea level rise. I have noticed that the sea is eroding higher grounds along a beach I visit regularly and the high tide appears to creep higher and higher. Storms cause significant further erosion. How much of Northland will be inundated on a very regular basis?

Perhaps time for Housing NZ to set minimum standards for houses the lease/rent from property investors. Those minimum standards should include insulation and other means to reduce dampness in homes and decent heating options.

First I like to commend The Warehouse on this initiative. However, there may be some pitfalls. In the paragraph below "For qualifying Warehouse staff it will increase their overall package to between $18.50 an hour and $20 an hour, adding $50 to $100 to their weekly pay. For someone working a 40-hour week, that's an annual salary of between $38,480 and $41,600." First you have to qualify i.e. be with the company for 3 yrs AND have achieved a training level. The company also doesn't say whether it will employ staff at the lower youth rate. They can pay that rate while people are still in their qualifying years, saving the company a lot of money, given that a lot of their staff comes straight out of school. Only when they jusy come off their youth wage time, they made up the 3 yrs. Whether this is a good deal for younger staff?

Bob McCoskrie is all about curtailing people's freedom of expression or carrying out doing things they believe is their right. He challenges, and wants to change, the current legal fabric of the New Zealand society by limiting people's freedom to suit his own believes and he uses 'Family First' as a front to achieve that. It is ridiculous that he gets tax payer funding to do so. If he wants to start his own 'church' so his followers can adhere to what he preaches within the confines of the 'church' is fine with me. Let his followers pay and don't force it on people that don't want it.

Why does it need to cost people a lot of money to do jury service? $31/half day doesn't pay the bills and only if you are employed AND your employer keeps paying your wages, it may be sufficient to cover your costs. Parking in the city costs a fortune and at other places you have hidden tow-away signs and it costs you $200 to get your car back. Why do jurors have to accommodate highly paid lawyers and judges almost for free?

Amaze Your Mind
Some things have the ability to open up our thinking in ways that change our worldview, make us redefine how we connect to the world and alter how we view the 'impossible'.
Miyoko Shida Rigolo puts in a performance that achieves just that. Balancing a feather, atop a stick, she builds up an intricate relationship of interplaying forces that in a broader social media community setting stand as an apt metaphor for the power of the relationships that unite us.
The 'weakest' amongst us has the ability to be a catalyst. bring in fresh insights, provide answers to questions that have been troubling the most able. If anything it makes the point that a community (and by association, a civilization and maybe our entire global human construct) is ultimately fragile, perishable. Easily destroyed when we fail to achieve balance, harmony, f... more »

Gang initiation killing? Police should get much tougher on gangs and any headquarters should be raided at least once a week as most of the crime originates from there. If it is not direct, it comes from proceeds of crime or to fund an addiction.

Guns, free for all. Bring in the weekly shoot out in front of the pub. Everyone with a grudge can join in. Registration and back ground check not required. Coroner is kindly asked to assist with the removal of some clients. This will help 2 purposes. Only (hopefully) people that participate get killed (by choice) and a lot of frustration is taken off the street. Oh.....as it will be self defence, the state prosecutor has provided a nationwide pardon for these shoot outs. Have fun.

The practice of feeding high-fructose started in the 70's, but colony collapse not until approx. 2006. I tend to think that 2006 is around the same time Monsanto pushed their GMO corn onto farmers. Would the GMO grown high-fructose corn syrup have a different make-up than the natural product and contribute to colony collapse in that way? It seems far-fetched that a practice that started 25-30 yrs before colony collapse started happening can be blamed for it, unless the syrup is not the same any more.

The attitude of 'she'll be right' will dominate the area of safety. A few years back, people were constructively dismissed because they spoke out about bad safety practices, simply because doing something about it was not a priority. That is not likely to get any better with this. Primark has found out first hand where that can lead to.

This bags the question: Do we want to constantly run around banning dangerous synthetic substances just because people want the freedom to decide whether they want to get high or drunk or addicted to tobacco? Why not look at a country like Holland. They had major drug problems until they allowed people to grow a few plants for personal use. There are still problems associated with drugs, but most of those are caused by people from other countries who cannot control themselves. It is like binge drinking, but binge drinking will not put a ban on alcohol. If you take (limited) personal use out of the equation, police can focus on the (semi) commercial operations. I tend to think that the natural product is a lot healthier than hard drugs and all the synthetic that is being smuggled into the country.

The would-like-to-be specialised IT companies will be lining up to promise the world that they will do the best job, only to require the government to fork out millions more to fix it after it is found that the system fails to meet specs. Government make sure that the contract is written in such a way that faults or not performing to specs after commissioning is fixed and paid for by the company, not the government.

This is what is wrong, even before it starts. "met industry representatives on Monday and agreed to form a joint panel to put together a new safety plan." Insider involvement is the worst possible approach to safety. They are bound to cut corners, because they are in there to reduce their expose (and costs) to protect their own margins. At the end, the industry will only be marginally safer. Please proof me wrong.
