Brittany Wegner
_Brittany Wenger, a high-school senior, is well on her way to making the diagnosis of breast cancer less painful and more accurate. Wenger began studying neural networks when she was in the seventh grade. And this year, she won the grand prize in the 2012 Google Science Fair for her project, “Global Neural Network Cloud Service for Breast Cancer.” The resulting Cloud4Cancer service aggregates data from biopsies done with the fine-needle aspiration process, instead of the traditional and more painful surgical option. The goal of Wenger’s network is to ensure that fine-needle aspiration biopsies are as accurate as traditional biopsies, which would allow more women to be diagnosed and treated early. In preliminary trials, the service has achieved 99.11 percent sensitivity to malignancy, and its over 7.6 milli... more »

Can I put Mint Linux or Ubuntu on this Chromebook?

The price of the Chromebooks is really attractive but I'm hoping that I can put Linux on it and use it for more than web based stuff.

So that's around 5months of bandwidth for a high end NZ broadband connection. Awesome.

How am I supposed to program stuff?
I have a love-hate relationship with code. When it works seamlessly to do what I want, I love it. When it takes minutes to write something that saves hours of time, I love it. But when I have to constantly scour Internet forums, or deal with the vitriol on StackExchange, I HATE code.
I have really only just started to learn how to use things like R and Python to make my job easier. I've used VBA for a long time, but even with that I've never really become fluent. My typical workflow goes something like this:
1. Define a problem
2. Search on the Internet for people with the same or similar problem
3. Modify their code so it works for me
4. Hit a roadblock because there's something I don't understand
5. Repeat steps 2-5 until it works.
It's becoming a bit long winded.... more »

Great reading for statisticians and data scientists. R^2 has many flaws: it is sensitive to outliers and size-sensitive:an R^2 of 0.65 does not have the same meaning for a data set with 20 observations, than for a dataset with 10,000 observations. How do you normalize this?

London in 1927, in colour!
The opening shots of this incredible scene were eerily familiar to me. The building on the extreme left is on Tower Bridge Road in Bermondsey where, 50 years after this film was shot in 1977 I opened my first bank account.
An amazing record of the city 86 years ago. Check the hats, so many hats.

Abigail Harrison, also known as +Astronaut Abby, is a very bright, enthusiastic, and determined 15-year-old girl who dreams big: she aspires to be the first astronaut to set foot on Mars.
Below is a short clip about Astronaut Abby who has been interested in space since age 6 and later wanted to become an "astro navigator" :D
Her mentor is flight engineer and ESA astronaut +Luca Parmitano, whom Abby met 2 years ago while standing in line at the airport after the NASA Social Tweetup for the final voyage of Space Shuttle Endeavour.
Parmitano is set to launch to the International Space Station from the Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on May 29, 2013 as part of Expedition 36/37.
Not only will Abby be there in person as part of her #SoyuzAdventure to share her experiences, but also will continue to promote STEM outreach as Parmitano's selected go-to person ... more »

I wonder if the threat of mass starvation might get people to consider organic agriculture.
Bees are being wiped out by a long list of issues. One major issue is pesticides and fungicides, which not only kill bees, but weaken their immune systems and make them vulnerable to various diseases another issue.
Food companies and consumers use these chemicals because they make food cheaper. But now they're on the brink of making food VERY expensive due to shortages.
What will it take for us to reject industrial agriculture? Will the threat of starvation and massively high food prices do it?
What do you think?
