The 1% force middle and lower class out of a handful of ruling cities (New York, London, Brussels) and then it's even easier to pass law and policy that 'helps everyone'.

I know these images are "imperfect" with the reflection of the astronaut's hand in the window, but I love them. These are the pictures that give a real sense of people being there. This one's from Apollo 15, taken in Lunar orbit.

My books are still all boxed up and I have nothing in my office, but I'm slowly getting back to work!

Paul Krugman 2096:

When looking backward, you must always be prepared to make allowances: it is unfair to blame late-20th-century observers for their failure to foresee everything about the century to come. Long-term social forecasting is an inexact science even now, and in 1996 the founders of modern nonlinear socioeconomics were obscure graduate students. Still, many people understood that the major forces driving economic change would be the continuing advance of digital technology and the spread of economic development throughout the world; in that sense, there were no big surprises. The puzzle is why the pundits of the time completely misjudged the consequences of those changes.

Perhaps the best way to describe the flawed vision of fin de siecle futurists is to say that, with few exceptions, they expected the coming of an ''immaculate'' economy -- one in which... more »

The reactions of the three other guys were just as hysterical. Dobbs said the data was among a set of "a lot of other concerning and troubling statistics." Dobbs was apocalyptic, saying, "We're watching society dissolve around us." Williams agreed: "You're seeing, I think, systemically, larger than the political stories that we follow every day, something going terribly wrong in American society."

What is going terribly wrong in American society? Crime rates are at historic lows. So are teen pregnancy rates. Worker productivity is high. Dobbs mentioned the high dropout rate, but it's declined from 12.1 percent in 1990 to 7.4 percent in 2010. He said we needed to "teach out kids to read and write," but the literacy rate is 99 percent. Very few people even smoke anymore. America is kind of awesome, actually, despite all these terrible working... more »

"Ben Franklin had that passionate curiosity," Isaacson said, "but he also had a sense of tolerance, which I think is the real lesson learned in childhood."
After running away from home as a young man, Franklin went to Philadelphia. While there, he created a club, the Leather Apron Club, for the shopkeepers and artisans, the middle class people whom he wanted to found a nation on, which listed the values that they ought to have; things like industry, honesty, and frugality.
"Being a geek, (Franklin) marks them on a chart and marks every week how well he does on each of those virtues until he could master them.
"Then he shows them around to the people in his club that he has mastered all 12 of those virtues. And one of the members says to him, 'Franklin, you've forgotten a virtue you might want to practice.' And Franklin says, 'What's that?'... more »

A number of quotations in the OED derive from a book with the title Meanderings of Memory. However, we have been unable to trace this title in library catalogues or text databases. All these quotations have a date of 1852, and some cite the author as ‘Nightlark’.

Have you ever seen a copy of this book? Can you identify the ‘well-known connoisseur’ mentioned by the bookseller?
