Misty Morning in the Manawatu

We have had a lot of rain and cloud over the last few days but when the clouds parted on Sunday morning I knew there was a chance of a nice sunrise. I expected the angry red sunrise but the mist and fog was a complete surprise :)

Last weekend I decided to make a flash diffuser to use with the extension tubes I bought a month or so ago. I found this design (http://petapixel.com/2013/04/22/how-to-make-a-cheap-diy-flash-diffuser-for-macro-photography/) and thought it looked like it could work quite well. Well half an hour later the project was done and after a bit of testing I think it works pretty well.

I know I know. Most of you are still waiting for 'my big reveal'. You will have to wait a little longer for me to 'officially' spill the beans but it's a fairly big deal.

For now, I present to you the portfolio I worked on for the last 3 weeks. In the end it turned into a 16 photograph portfolio covering The Prairies. This slideshow was part of the leave behind package I made for the venue.

All photographs were printed using archival pigment ink on Ilford Pearl, T-hinged to acid free museum board and matted using 8-ply mattes to 16x20". Obviously up to par with the highest museum standards.

Pulling Me In

Here is a second image from my trip to Clifton Beach with +Robert Simpson +Simon Cartwright and +Andrew Caldwell. We found this rock a little way along the beach as the tide was coming in. Initially +Andrew Caldwell claimed dibbs on this rock but as the tide came in relented lol.. probably for good reasons as this was the price I paid for this and a few other shots lol https://plus.google.com/photos/105190119447635952947/albums/5861429192245230321/5861429191904797090?authkey=CI3dtNDv79jIjQE  (image by +Robert Simpson ) I guess the quote from Robert Capa "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough" really applies to a 12mm lens (effectively an 18mm on my crop sensor)

Soaked

The incoming tide made for some great images, with the waves pounding on to Clifton beach. The more sensible +Robert Simpson, +Simon Cartwright and +Andrew Caldwell were all a little higher up the beach which meant they went home drier than me, but I think this image was worth the gumboot full of water lol.

Thanks again for a great morning guys, can't wait for next time :)

Ok, its not actually a mountain as such, its actually the rubbish dump but was nicknamed Mt cleese after John Cleese, after an infamous incident a couple of years ago.

Driftwood Butterfly
Awesome sunset last night... While walking along the beach on the Island of Gili Air, Indonesia, I came across this gnarly old piece of driftwood in the sand. After 30 shots or so, I finally captured this photo. I was shooting handheld so capturing the waves movement was somewhat of a challenge. The waves remind me of insect wings, hence the title.

Feel free to share if you like! Thanks guys!

Storm Coming

Storm clouds haven't been a common sight in our part of the world for the last couple of months. In fact for the first time the entire of the North Island of New Zealand has been declared a drought zone. Over the weekend a small storm moved in over the country, the old remnants of a cyclone. With it has come some rain, lots of humidity and this amazing sunrise on Saturday morning.

The Bike Ride To Work

Since November I have been biking to work each day, about 5.5 k's each way. One of the great things about living in the Manawatu is the awesome cycleways that have been built around the city, including the one I use along the banks of the Manawatu river.

With the sunrise getting later and later each day, watching the sun climb its way into the sky has been a great fringe benefit. With the steam rising off the river and crisp clean air, its a great way to start the day.

White Butterfly

Managed to find time this afternoon to finish a little DIY softbox, otherwise known as a icecream container with a hole cut in it to fit a flash in and a piece of A4 printer paper as the diffuser. Here is one of my test subjects catching a quick drink before heading off to lay some eggs.  The image was captured with a 50mm lens at f16, with 34mm of extension tubes.
