Alasdair Allan33,320This one day course will guide you through developing location aware applications for the iOS platforms that make use of the onboard sensors: the 3-axis accelerometer, the magnetometer, the gyroscope, the camera and the GPS. You'll learn how to make use of these onboard sensors and combine them to build sophisticated location aware applications. You'll also learn how to extend the reach of the on-board sensors by connecting your iOS device to external hardware. We'll look at how to connect the Arduino micro-controller platform to your iOS device, and build simple applications to control the board and gather measurements from sensors connected to it, directly from iOS. This course will give you the background to build your own applications independently, using the hottest location-aware technology yet for any mobile platform.iOS Sensors and External Hardware Masterclass2012-10-08 09:00:001

Manufacturers have been quick to pledge support for +Google's new beacon standard, #Eddystone . But the rush to offer support may have consequences, as basic security considerations are being ignored.

Our analysis shows that it’s possible to reconfigure any +Estimote beacon running their current developer firmware to broadcast an entirely different URL. The vulnerability allows you to update beacons you don’t own, and theoretically at least, are not supposed to have authorisation to access. #Bluetooth   #BLE   #iBeacon   #EddystoneBeacon

Taking about the end of Moore's Law, and the possibility that it might not be a bad thing. That it's possible our children will grow up with computers that are not much faster than we use today. But it might not matter, because we may well have reached the point where our computing is “good enough.”

The most common business model supporting the current generation of Internet of Things devices is the one time purchase of a thing. However these things then almost always rely on an cloud service to make it “smart,” and that appears unsustainable. Ever seen a Hollywood movie where the “hacker” unlocks all the doors in a prison, or some other high security facility, their team is trying to enter from a van outside the building… with just a single typed command? Well, apparently we all have to stop laughing. We can now do this at most major airports using a command injection bug and a single UDP packet. #iot #industrialinternet #security #hack

The people taking over the project seem to have a lot of good ideas for the direction of #TheThingSystem  and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it. +Marshall Rose and I will be hanging around as maintainers emeritus to offer advice.

friends - the proto-curators would like to announce that The Thing System is about to be adopted by a new set of curators... that is all.

so, the period of hiatus is nearly over.
