The exact measurement times are encrypted using an unbreakable One Time Pad, which will be revealed with the results of each measurement. *CLUSTERS* Four Clusters per city have been selected for measurement. Images are enclosed to clarify the Portals within each Cluster. Each Cluster corresponds to a single Measurement Time. (Cluster 1 = Measurement 1 etc.). *VOLATILE PORTALS* 15 minutes prior to each measurement, we will be able to determine 5 Volatile Portals, a subset of the active Cluster, that will be significantly more valuable to the factions when the measurement occurs. *MAJOR POWERCENTERS* Of even greater significance are two key powercenters in Washington D.C., The White House and The US Capitol Building. It is predicted that capturing these structures in an XM field will be critically valuable to the Factions during the course of the Anomaly. *VALUES AT MEASUREMENT TIME* (At measurement time, within the Cluster being measured) Portal Ownership: 2 per Portal Link connected to Portal: 5 per Link * Volatile Portal Ownership: 20 per Volatile Portal A Field over All Portals in the Cluster being Measured: 100 ** A Field capturing the White House or the Capitol Building: 50 **  * Links anchored by multiple Portals will be counted once.  ** In the event of overlapping fields from different  Factions, the outer field will be measured. *IMPACT ON REMAINDER OF ANOMALY* The end state of this Anomaly will accumulate and carry forward for the remainder of Operation #Cassandra. The losing Faction will be able to gain access to Volatile Portal information approximately 5 minutes earlier (via Private Intel and/or Faction Comms) at the next Operation #Cassandra city. *XM ANOMALY LINKS* AUG 11: SYDNEY http://goo.gl/ujBcwP  AUG 13: MILAN http://goo.gl/Y6iOWP AUG 15: TOKYO http://goo.gl/H3JDLL  AUG 17: DUSSELDORF http://goo.gl/DznAsx  AUG 17: WASHINGTON, DC http://goo.gl/HiBk2W  AUG 17: BOSTON http://goo.gl/xpftg9  AUG 18: MANILA http://goo.gl/wgB7gK  AUG 20: PARIS http://goo.gl/LyaFOM  AUG 21: SAO XM Anomaly: #Cassandra, Washington, DC2013-08-17 13:00:00459

The Ethics of a +Project Glass World
I want it as much as you do, but we need to talk. Seriously.

It is unquestionable that the good; in a catering-to-the-gadget-inclined sense, and the addictive; in a feeding-the-delusional sense, as well as the helpful; in a bionic, augmenting, supporting-those-that-are-disabled sense, and the economical; in an obvious sense; is beyond current imagination.

With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the dark side. Take one feature: The ever-recording, potentially streaming, continually filming, über-sensing [1] video camera.

The question is very simply stated: What happens if everybody, anybody, starts wearing continually recording video cameras, 24/7?

Privacy, not mine and yours, but exceedingly fundamental, the privacy of that one person is a concern, that one person, who justdoesn... more »

Building a Nuke? You Need Snake Oil

In April 2009 it was reported from Saudi Arabia that rumors that Singer sewing machines contained "red mercury" had caused the prices of such machines to massively increase in the Kingdom, with some paying up to SR 200,000 for a single machine which could previously have been bought for SR 200. Believers in the rumor claimed that the presence of red mercury in the sewing machines' needles could be detected using a mobile telephone; if the line cut off when the telephone was placed near to the needle, this supposedly proved that the substance was present. In Medina there was a busy trade in the sewing machines, with buyers seen using mobile phones to check the machines for red mercury content, while it was reported that others had resorted to theft, with two tailors' shops in Dhulum broken into and their sewing machines stolen. In Medina there was a busy trade in the sewing machines, with buyers seen using mobile phones to check the machines for red mercury content, while it was reported that others had resorted to theft, with two tailors' shops in Dhulum broken into and their sewing machines stolen. There was little agreement among believers in the story as to the exact nature or even color of the red mercury, while the supposed uses for it ranged from it being an essential component of nuclear power, to having the ability to summon jinn, extract gold, or locate buried treasure and perform other forms of magic.

From:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_mercury

The beauty about that kind of hoax is that attempts to debunk it are seen as cover-ups, hiding the secret in plain sight...

Tomorrow's NYT Magazine has an interesting feature about "red mercury" as well:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/22/magazine/the-doomsday-scam.html?_r=1

(The picture is an actual picture of legitimate red mercury, copying that picture constitutes WMD proliferation.) ___

A handy guide to measuring the sky

Our conventional methods of measuring distances between two objects on Earth make very little sense while measuring distances between celestial objects.

Because of this, astronomers measure the apparent distances between objects in the sky using a method based on angles. Developed by the Babylonians thousands of years ago, this method uses the angle that any two celestial objects with an observational point on Earth as a way to measure and define the apparent distances between such objects.

Such distances are known as angular distances or angular separation and are measured in terms of degrees (°), arc minutes (') and arc seconds (").

A handy way to measure distances

Hold your hand at arm’s length and close one eye.

# Make a fist, with the back of your hand facing you. The width of your fist will approximately be 10 degrees. This means that any two objects that are on the opposite ends of your fist will be 10 degrees apart. The North Star (Polaris) and Dubhe, one of the northern pointers of the Big are 3 fists apart. This means that angular distance or angular separation between the two stars is 30°.

# Open up your fist, stretch your little finger and thumb as far as you can and curl down the rest of your fingers. The tip of your little finger and your thumb will span about 25°. The Big Dipper spans around 25°.

# The tip-to-tip span between your index finger and your little finger is 15°.

# Your three middle fingers will span about 5°.

# Your little finger at an arms length is about 1° wide.

It is important to note that such measurements are approximate – not everyone has the same sized hand.

Angular size

Angular size or angular diameter of a celestial object is the angular separation between opposite edges of the object. The Sun and the Moon are the only objects in the sky whose angular size is visible to the naked eye.

The angular diameter of a full Moon is about 30', while the angular diameter of the Sun is around 32'.

Find your latitude

If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, you can use your hands to find your current location’s latitude. To do this, stretch your hands in front of you and measure the angle between the visible horizon and the North Star. This angle is your latitude in degrees. There is no bright star equivalent to the North Star in the Southern Hemisphere.

Taking books into the future?

The book format on the Economist site nicely illustrates the difference between a tangible book and a digital prop. While the message may or may not be devalued, it is certainly altered, a fact that needs to be taken into account; you cannot arbitrarily change the medium without adjusting the message.

When I'm making books (http://alexanderbecker.net/books/), it always yields better results to invest in the extra work to adapt the printed book's content to the ebook, instead of merely copying and forcing what was created for one medium into the respective other medium.

Soft Control (in case you thought you'd move freely, you probably aren't)

How can we control the collective behavior of self-organized multi-agent systems? We try to answer the question by proposing a new notion called 'Soft Control', which keeps the local rule of the existing agents in the system. We show the feasibility of soft control by a case study. Consider the simple but typical distributed multi-agent model proposed by Vicsek et al. for flocking of birds: each agent moves with the same speed but with different headings which are updated using a local rule based on the average of its own heading and the headings of its neighbors. Most studies of this model are about the self-organized collective behavior, such as synchronization of headings. We want to intervene in the collective behavior (headings) of the group by soft control. A specified method is to add a special... more »

A specified method is to add a special agent, called a 'Shill', which can be controlled by us but is treated as an ordinary agent by other agents. We construct a control law for the shill so that it can synchronize the whole group to an objective heading. This control law is proved to be effective analytically and numerically. Note that soft control is different from the approach of distributed control. It is a natural way to intervene in the distributed systems. It may bring out many interesting issues and challenges on the control of complex systems.

An application

A number of novel wireless networked services, ranging from participatory sensing to social networking, leverage the increasing capabilities of mobile devices and the movement of the individuals carrying them. For many of these systems, their effectiveness fundamentally depends on coverage and the particular mobility patterns of the participants. Given the strong spatial and temporal regularity of human mobility, the needed coverage can typically only be attained through a large participant base.

In this paper we explore an alternative approach to attain coverage without scale -- (soft) controlling the movement of participants. We present Crowd Soft Control (CSC), an approach to exert limited control over the temporal and spatial movements of mobile users by leveraging the built-in incentives of location-based gaming and social applications. By pairing network services with these location-based apps, CSC allows researchers to use an application's incentives (e.g. games objectives) to control the movement of participating users, increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of the associated network service. After outlining the case for Crowd Soft Control, we present an initial prototype of our ideas and discuss potential benefits and costs in the context of two case studies.

Books. Emotional Objects.

There are few things that are predictable, and even fewer things that are forever, even in the sense of being around as long as the culture, society, and world as we know it exists.

There is one prediction I'd like to make though. Books, printed books. They will be around for a long time. There will be digital books, ebooks, and more delivery vehicles will be created, some seriously interesting and some truly useful. But the printed book, the book as a physical object, isn't disappearing anytime soon.

Around 1995, David Carson created a book, "The End of Print" — mostly typographical terrorism around the title thesis with tons of graphics and ill-cropped photographs. But the printed book, the book as a physical object, isn't disappearing anytime soon.

Around 1995, David Carson created a book, "The End of Print" — mostly typographical terrorism around the title thesis with tons of graphics and ill-cropped photographs. It's beautiful, spectacular even, and I still have it as a hard copy, a physical souvenir of the time. It's a monument, an ironic paradox that failed to deliver its promise starting from day one, its contradiction getting even stronger over the years. Even better, the cheap paperback came loose during the first weeks. I had it repaired by a bookbinder. It's a book after all. The kind that doesn't die. (Now, it's out of print. Q.E.D.)

In 2011, I wrote "None of This is Real" — a beautiful book full of art criticizing itself. Even more beautiful is that it delivers on its title, I never had a substantial amount of copies printed. If you order it, it will be printed in the geographical region you happen to be and become real.

Books are emotional objects. That's why I'm betting on them — as a bookmaker.

In the strict meaning of the word there cannot be anything 'new' in the typography of books. Though largely forgotten today, methods and rules upon which it is impossible to improve have been developed over centuries. To produce perfect books, these rules have to be brought back to life and applied. —Jan Tschichold, 1958

Is Professional Life Being Informed By Personal Life And Vice Versa?

The question came up in a different context and I'm not as much interested in this specific story as I'd like to know whether there is some sort of dilemma, or bias depending on the amount of overlap between the two sides of life.

Here is a rather disturbing case —

Among the evidence that convicted Makarov was his daughter’s drawing of a cat with a tail that Leila Sokolova, a psychologist at the clinic, called phallic. Her testimony played a key role in establishing that a rape took place, argued Tokareva. With many already skeptical of the verdict, bloggers unearthed a series of photos of Sokolova in tight fitting black leather outfits brandishing a whip; her comments on online forums exposed her as a dominatrix, lesbian and “inclined toward sadism.” [1]

The psychiatrist, who works for Ozon psychological rehab for abused children, declined to comment on the allegations.

Prominent psychologist Alexander Shadura told The St. Petersburg Times that Sokolova’s personal life — whatever it might be — should not have any influence on her expertise. “I don’t think it plays a role. She should just be a professional,” he said. [2]

Does it have an influence or not?

The requirements were equally clear: At least 8 level-8 players with the problem being that our rival green frog faction was far ahead of the game with more than 8 players for weeks, but apparently a lack of motivation or organisation. For us blue smurf players, developing an underdog strategy was the only way out of an almost completely green city at the beginning of the year. Project Eightball: The First #Ingress Level 8 Farm in Berlin
brought to you by the 8-Ball Team of the Berlin Resistance

The challenge was clearly laid out: Capture the Victory Column and be the first faction to erect a bunch of level-8 portals in the city. In the first days of 2013, I made my level 8 and we decided to keep it within a trusted circle and used our resources, open source intelligence, and a couple of ruses and many deceptive moves (a shared map with all the players names and false level numbers, as well as continuously feeding the egos of the usual suspects) to prepare the revolution. (#werock) Our community grew and the city turned blue, to the point of full spectrum dominance a week ago, mostly due to what might be perceived as torpor with the frogs.

Now, after the last frogs started to thaw and move again, the race was on, and yours truly — jam-packed with almost 1000 level-8 XMPs and the remainder of the inventory consisting of 6, 7, and 8 resonators — accidentally planted a lone level 8 resonator, which promptly alerted the COMM-trackers of the green faction. With 7 level-8 players, we convinced out own garyy to do an all-nighter and gather his remaining marginal 200k AP to make the victory column glow in bright blue.

The rest, as they say, is history, Saturday, high noon, beautiful weather (not really) and the 9 portals in the center ring were ours and farmed until burnout, just in time before the green demolition team woke up in shock, arrived and did their ugly thing within an hour — but not before we left the autographs of the 8 players on a packet of jelly smurfs at a lantern post in the inner ring.

Enjoy the happy pictures, the only ones missing are those of a few of our dear frogs upon receiving the news of the day.

Very special thanks and a big shout-out to our tireless community manager and cunning operator +Johannes Paul, who gave away many levels in support of lower level players!

I detest self-laudatory celebrations and mutual aggrandizing excesses, so read the above with a huge grain of salt and imagine the narrative tongue very firmly in cheek. That said, the team spirit, motivation, and organisation efforts were and are outstanding and deserve the real credit here, so thanks! And in case we ever have to fight a civil war or defend against a Zombie outbreak, the structures are in place.

Pimping where pimping is due...
Editing, production, etc. by yours truly.

Now Available! My very own Kindle ebook: Engineer to Dot-Bomber: How Did I Get Here?

A memoir of working in the time before, and leading up to, the dot-com collapse. With stories and remembrances along the author's sometimes-twisty path from aerospace engineer to "web guru," this is a tale that will interest those who lived through, and those who came after, this unique era.

This project grew out of a series of Google+ posts I recently made under the heading "You may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?" These were so well-received by my friends here on G+, that I was encouraged -- and helped -- to make an ebook out of it. With +Alexander Becker - publisher/editor, and +Dieter Mueller - cover illustrator.

Even if you read the original series, I hope you'll consider downloading the book, and of course leaving a glowing review on Amazon! :)___Pimping where pimping is due...

I want it as much as you do, but we need to talk. Seriously.

With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the dark side. Take one feature: The ever-recording, potentially streaming, continually filming, über-sensing [1] video camera.

Privacy, not mine and yours, but exceedingly fundamental, the privacy of that one person is a concern, that one person, who just doesn’t want to be filmed and photo-captured and who claims the right to his own picture.

CCTV surveillance cameras and smartphone cameras are ever-present today and implicitly accepted through social conventions which emerged and formed over the last 10 years. But, taking out your smartphone and starting to film someone vs. filming unconditionally and without the third-party role which any photographer takes on, by way of taking himself out of the action and into an observer mode; instead being both actor and documenter does make all the difference.

Ethical questions

We can’t have arbitrary people film our kids on the playground, we can’t have a non-consensual livestream of a one-night-stand that wasn’t supposed to be in the first place, and we can’t have people who don’t want to be photographed, be photographed. Take the example of +Steve Mann [2], who was attacked at a French McDonalds for wearing augmented reality glasses — paranoid people who don’t want to go on record? Need to be taken into account, at least.

Legal problems

When compared to the subjective, ethical, cultural, or whatever-you-want-to-call-it dilemma, the legal issues are almost trivial. The trick will be to make explicit non-privacy work in the general public, in Europe, and especially in Germany despite the legal problems that need to be solved in order for the privacy-invading features to be allowed in public spaces.

Streaming video to another device is one such legal problem, Hangouts on Air, for example are currently not permitted in Germany because they are considered public broadcasts which are specifically regulated.

The “right to one’s own picture” is another such regulated area. You have the right to deny the use of any picture taken of you.

Solutions, and all of those are partly inadequate, could include:

• Individually carried scrambling devices, which actively disturb the camera feature.
• Stationary scrambling devices, which actively protect certain locations from camera views.
• Face recognition which, after recognizing a face and determining an opt-out decision, prevents a face from being recorded.
• Passive disabling of camera and other features based on locations as recognized by the device’s sensors.

If these sound unfeasible, it’s because they are. And we’re back at square one: How does (a) society have to change in order to accommodate a broadly available technology that is truly revolutionary in its potential positive effects and almost unacceptably intrusive from a variety of ethical perspectives?

The problem, and the big change which lies ahead is a societal and an ethical one — +Project Glass, and its competitors will be a reality in 5 years and we need to have the discussion, the understanding, and the means to deal with the disruptive and — as of now unreflected — side-effects of a geek’s wet dream.

For the related discussion on the conceptual and theoretically even more important problems that “augmenting” reality presents, compare +Dieter Mueller’s excellent essays —

A disclaimer: I’m involved in the planning stages of a startup dealing with and employing the exciting new opportunities and endless positive potential that +Project Glass opens in a difficult legal environment, specializing in (re-)augmenting impaired cognitive skills.

By the way, do we have a quid pro quo situation with regards to people wearing glasses like +Sergey Brin does? Does he retain the rights to his own picture while taking the opposite one?___

Time To Apply The First Law Of Robotics To Our Smartphones?

Seventy years ago, Isaac Asimov created the “first law of robotics,” the idea that robots of the future would obey a rule rooted deep in their programming: “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.” By the year 2015, as his short stories predicted, even outmoded droid models would obey that maxim.

But now we’ve nearly reached that date. And according to free software pioneer, futurist and activist Eben Moglen, that fundamental law of robot ethics has yet to be coded into the most ubiquitous bots in our lives: our smartphones.

“We imagined that robots would be designed so that they could never hurt a human being. These robots have no such commitments. These robots hurt us every day. They work for other people. They’re designed, built and man... more »

“We imagined that robots would be designed so that they could never hurt a human being. These robots have no such commitments. These robots hurt us every day. They work for other people. They’re designed, built and managed to provide leverage and control to people other than their owners. Unless we retrofit the first law of robotics onto them immediately, we’re cooked.”

“They take our money. They take our autonomy. They spy on us. And around the world, they result in our arrest, beating, torture.”

Even jailbreaking iPhones and rooting Android devices is only a first step, he adds. “That’s like taking the cover plate off the robot,” Moglen says. “But we have to deeply infiltrate the thing, all the way from the cloud to the device, and make it work the way people need it to work, not the way the network operators want it to work.”

There are a gazillion academic papers on the Prisoner's Dilemma from a good dozen different academic disciplines, but the weirdest dataset on real people playing the game is from a British game show called Golden Balls. In the final round of the game, called "Split or Steal," two contestants play a one-shot Prisoner's Dilemma -- technically, it's a variant -- choosing to either cooperate (and split a jackpot) or defect (and try to steal it). How John von Neumann solved the fly puzzle —

Two bicyclists start twenty miles apart and head toward each other, each going at a steady rate of 10 mph. At the same time a fly that travels at a steady 15 mph starts from the front wheel of the southbound bicycle and flies to the front wheel of the northbound one, then turns around and flies to the front wheel of the southbound one again, and continues in this manner till he is crushed between the two front wheels.

Question: what total distance did the fly cover?

The slow way to find the answer is to calculate what distance the fly covers on the first, northbound, leg of the trip, then on the second, southbound, leg, then on the third, etc., etc., and, finally, to sum the infinite series so obtained.

The quick way is to observe that the bicycles meet exactly one hour after their start, so that the fly had just an hour for his travels; the answer must therefore be 15 miles.

When the question was put to von Neumann, he solved it in an instant, and thereby disappointed the questioner: "Oh, you must have heard the trick before!" "What trick?" asked von Neumann, "All I did was sum the infinite series."

On Cultivating Dissent

My own working assumption is that groupthink — roughly defined as a self-enforcing consensus-driven, leader-pleasing, sense-of-belonging-evoking psychologic mechanism (and not just a failure) — can’t be escaped. But we can make it work for us; by disrupting groups through constantly changing parameters and perceived “members” and by shuffling groups (nothing is worse than your core group) as well as by playing and inviting devil’s advocates from the outside.

The two main culprits are —

#1 the human need for harmony and consensus, and
#2 the human need to belong to a group.

Manipulate these two points by introducing enough discomfort and groupthink decreases until the next iteration.

Groupthink And The Brainstorming Myth
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/01/30/120130fa_fact_lehrer?currentPage=all

“While the instruction ‘Do not criticize’ is often cited as the important instruction in brainstorming, this appears to be a counterproductive strategy. Our findings show that debate and criticism do not inhibit ideas but, rather, stimulate them relative to every other condition.” Osborn thought that imagination is inhibited by the merest hint of criticism, but Nemeth’s work and a number of other studies have demonstrated that it can thrive on conflict.

According to Nemeth, dissent stimulates new ideas because it encourages us to engage more fully with the work of others and to reassess our viewpoints. “There’s this Pollyannaish notion that the most important thing to do when working together is stay positive and get along, to not hurt anyone’s feelings,” she says. “Well, that’s just wrong. Maybe debate is going to be less pleasant, but it will always be more productive. True creativity requires some trade-offs.”

Criticism allows people to dig below the surface of the imagination and come up with collective ideas that aren’t predictable. And recognizing the importance of conflicting perspectives in a group raises the issue of what kinds of people will work together best.

From Wikipedia —
In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, no dynamic range imaging (NDRI or just NDR) is a set of techniques that allows virtually no dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image compared to current standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. The elimination of dynamic range allows NDR images to represent more accurately the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight, and is often captured by way of a plurality of differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter.

Impact on numbers: The overall averages for shares, +1, and comments per post went up; I doubt that this reflects or approaches reality more than before, in fact, appearing on What’s Hot several times would improve these numbers without an actual improvement of the quality of the stream. Interesting examination: +Baldur Bjarnason navigates through the various levels of ebook design and the pitfalls in visual design, usability, and general trouble for the reader —

"Let’s be honest here. As readers, we never asked for interactivity in our books, and the interactivity we need we won’t get, because both ereader vendors and publishers view us as cattle to be herded, locked up, and milked until we die."

This is a really smart post that cuts through the Gordian knots around "enhanced ebooks" with some smart thinking about what levels of design are needed for various types of books, and what ebook formats support each type of book. A great example of +Edwin Schlossberg's dictum that "The skill of writing is to create a context in which other people can think."___Interesting examination: +Baldur Bjarnason navigates through the various levels of ebook design and the pitfalls in visual design, usability, and general trouble for the reader —

"Let’s be honest here. As readers, we never asked for interactivity in our books, and the interactivity we need we won’t get, because both ereader vendors and publishers view us as cattle to be herded, locked up, and milked until we die."

I remember being raised on the German equivalent, the Brockhaus — equally prestigious and the original also long out of print. As a kid, I used to browse through the volumes and learned a great deal from the curated common knowledge.

Checked facts, that's what today's kids don't have on the Internet and at 5 years old, I couldn't fact-check but I could read, from a reliable resource.

Running out of Ink
The Encyclopaedia Britannica ceases publishing its printed version after 244 years

The Encyclopaedia Britannica (Latin for British Encyclopedia) is finally going to stop being printed. After the current stock of the 32-volume strong collection of knowledge runs out, it will be impossible to buy a new copy of the reference work of so many generations. It had been in print since 1768.

244 years is a long time. When the first edition was published in Scotland, it consisted of ‘only’ three volumes and did not contain an entry about Napoleon Bonaparte because he had not even been born. The world was a very different place and the need and reach for an encyclopedia was still limited to the elite few.

Ironically, this led to the encyclopedia becoming somewhat of an object of desire as a status symbol rather than as an actual reference for most families. This popularized Britannica’s offering greatly, but by being popular it did not necessarily mean it was being used more often. Even though it was practical to hold a wealth of information in your living room (where it can be seen clearly and thus admired by visitors), looking up information took painstakingly long and moving to related subjects usually meant getting up to grab another volume and start searching all over again.

Nowadays the control of information has been taken from the few and given to the many. The Britannica will still be offered as a paid-for service online (it is actually free for a week following the announcement of the demise of the printed version), however the appeal of a paid service is relatively limited when there is so much quality information available on the Internet. The bonus of using a source such as the Britannica is that the information is still collected and checked by professionals, but as long as you can look well enough you can find respected sources all over the world wide web.

But don’t despair! The information contained in the print volumes will still be accessible. In addition to being available online, Britannica offers the full encyclopedia on DVD at a relatively modest price. They also produce a wealth of educational apps for children, research tools and brain training games.

Did you know?
Even though the Britannica was originally a European publication it is now owned by a company in the US (+Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc.) but still keeps its British English spelling.

Do you think we still need well-respected sources compiling information or should we learn how to find the information we need online?
or
Is there still a reason to pay for quality information in the Internet age?

My Kindle Experiment

Using the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing service, I published an electronic version of the #readonly part from last year's Lyrois volume of works from 2002 to 2011. The pricing is somewhat dynamic and on Friday and on Saturday you can download the book for free.

It's an experiment and I'm not sure how it'll play out.

Apply this concept outside the world of art and you may be onto something.

Book Publication & Production Services

After I did the layout and typesetting for +james altucher's "I Was Blind But Now I See" and James did such a good job at writing and promoting it, I'm now flooded with requests for assistance in the book publication process.

Here is what I do as well as I need from you if you want your own book laid out, designed, or made look good.

The Ignorant Audience Law states: "Someone important in the audience always knows less than you think everyone should know, even if you take the Ignorant Audience Law into account."

True. The recursive part makes this advice a real gem.

The War Against Books

#1 Why are people so fascinated with destroying books?
#2 Why do artists tend to intellectualize the anti-intellectual?

From the artist's statement: With the vanishing of cultures, some people are displaced and destroyed. We are currently told that the paper book is bound to die. The library, as a place, is finished. One might say: so what? Do we really believe that “new technologies” will change anything concerning our existential dilemma, our human condition? And even if we could change the content of all the books on earth, would this change anything in relation to the domination of analytical knowledge over intuitive knowledge? What is it in ourselves that insists on grabbing, on casting the flow of experience into concepts?

What?

I wrote about artists explaining their art to death earlier --
http://behind.lyrois.com/2010/06/rant-dont-explain-your-art-to-death.html

"If your art needs to be explained, there is the danger of the explanation being better than the art itself."

Well, not in this case. An artist with obviously great skills in craft, he not only presents a "statement" competing with his art, even more so, his art is in direct competition with the material he uses, and in destroying the books, he takes away value he isn't able to give back. Guy Laramee: Use telephone books, apply your great skills and make the statement fun, ironic, or leave it out altogether.

It's hard enough to get people to actually read.

(Yes, it's a rant. Yes, I'm over-interpreting. Yes, I take insult where they might be none. Yes, it bothers me seeing books destroyed. Yes, I believe artists should do they thing, without trying to explain the obvious. Yes, I believe most artists's statement are fluff.)___
