White Pelicans at Lake Hodges (2 photos)

In recent years I’ve seen white pelicans at Lake Hodges more frequently. They like brackish water, so I guess as the lake’s water level dropped more and more, they found more food in the really shallow areas of the lake.

"Light Path" - backlit trail through chaparral at the Del Mar Mesa Preserve, San Diego. One of my favorite places got even better this year with all the rain that we had: there's a LOT of water running there right now (some trails are impassable because of pooling water actually) and it's super green already.

This is one out of seven photos that I made this morning, the others are in my latest blog post, on my website: https://www.alex-kunz.com/2017/02/trails-creeks-del-mar-mesa-preserve/ - thanks for looking!

#throwback to 2010 when I was hiking in the alps in Bavaria, Germany. This is the most gentle slope of Mount Watzmann and on that little notch sits an alpine hostel called Watzmannhaus.

Watzmannhaus is run by the German alpine club (Deutscher Alpenverein). It is one of the most popular hostels at the Berchtesgaden National Park in the Bavarian alps. The notch it sits on is called "Falzköpfl" and is at an elevation of 1930m (~6330 feet). Mount Watzmann is the second highest mountain in Germany (only Zugspitze is higher) and people use the Watzmannhaus hostel as a rest stop or overnight stay to do the famous Watzmann traverse (Watzmannüberquerung) as a two day hike.

We made a little afternoon cruise to Palomar Mountain and hiked down to the Love Valley meadow. After plenty of rain, it’s the first time for me to see the pond there with water – it’s highly ephemeral and very shallow of course, but a really nice sight.
