Tokyo from above: the bridge, Shinjuku

Shot this back in March of this year, from the 28th floor of a building near Shinjuku Station. 28th floor of this building is where the Nikon Salon is in Shinjuku. Come out the lift and you have some great views.

The city at my feet: Tokyo's Yurakucho & Ginza districts shot from above

Looking forward to doing some long exposures at night soon, at this location. I've helped students and people doing tours with me to do some but haven't had a go at it myself yet.

Great spot. The 14mm really makes it pop.

Some recent portraits of my kids, using the Hasselblad H4D-40

I've been really busy of late so it was nice to get out of the city for a few days recently, including an overnight stay in Nikko. 15cms of snow overnight was a nice surprise, too.

This year has been pretty busy so far, which is nice. My wife started full-time work again recently so our opportunities to get away have been limited.

We recently had to visit Fukushima, to pay respects at my father-in-law's grave on the one-year anniversary of his death. We spent a couple of days in our home town in Fukushima and planned an overnighter in Nikko, on the way back to Tokyo.

See more pictures here, at my Japanorama website:

Landscape photography in Japan: the start of our camping trip at Lake Motosu

Motosu-ko is one of the prettiest lakes in the Fuji-go-ko, or Fuji Five Lakes area. It also has the most awesome campsite in the area. And out of several campsites around the lake, the one we visit every year is the coolest, most relaxed and rule-free.

This year we spent three nights, four days there. Our tent of fifteen years service - which has kept us warm and dry in England, Wales, France and a bunch of other places - finally died during the intense rainstorm on the last night. It's done us well. It's time to get a new one.

I didn't take a lot of shots this year as I spent most of my time cooking, chilling, swimming, snorkelling and hanging with my kids.

But, I shot a few.

Mari in retro: portrait in the Azabu Studio

This is from a few months ago, when I was using the studio space for a few test shoots. Mari had just severely cut her hair and needed some new shots The original was colour but I had some time on the shinkansen the following day to play with a few of the shots and this looked good with an old treatment.

Photography studio in Tokyo: new studio space for portraits, headshots & lighting workshops

After years of trying to find somewhere convenient, friendly and in partnership with someone I like and trust, I’m very pleased to announce that from September 1st, I have a studio space in central Tokyo.

From the beginning of September, I shall be renting a studio for 45hrs a month in Azabujuban. The location is less than ten minutes walk from the main Azabu crossing and Oedo/Namboku Line train stations. It’s about 5mins walk from the Tsutaya in Roppongi Hills.

Travel photography in Japan: lady in kimono shoots a photo at Asakusa temple

I shot one or two frames back in May on a day when I was out shooting with someone in town for a few days and taking a lesson/tour with me.

This spot at Asakusa's main temple is a favourite of mine, for shooting the people putting money into the box and praying.

This lady in kimono made a nice subject. In the full size, out of the camera version, you can see the screen of her camera quite clearly.

Manual focusing at f/1.2 to get the screen of her camera sharp, so quickly - as she wasn't there long - is a bit tricky but it's pretty sharp.

Architectural photography in Tokyo: Mode Gakuen (Cocoon Tower) and Sky Tree

Tokyo is so ridiculously dense and getting up high to shoot with a long lens, in this case the 300mm f/4 I have for my Nikons, really does show you how dense the place is.

The Coccon Tower (Mode Gakuen school and university) is one of the iconic buildings in the city but this is a rather unconventional view of it. We see just the top of the tower here, with the Tokyo Sky Tree in the background and a whole swathe of the city in between.

This was shot from the the North observation tower of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku, 45 floors up.

Ballet photography, Tokyo: Alexandra Farber in Yurakucho

Alexandra is a pro ballet dancer based in the US and she was in Tokyo earlier this year and we hooked up for a few quick photos.

This alley/street next to the railway tracks in between Yurakucho and Shinbashi is a fave location of mine and I've used it over the years for a few shoots and workshops.

Alexandra was lovely to work with. I'll be posting an article on my blog tomorrow with a load more pics and will link to it from here in another post.

Fashion & portrait photography in Tokyo: Kat in Ikebukuro

It's been a while since Kat and I worked with each other and since she got a dramatically shorter haircut for a job at a hair styling show, I really wanted to catch up.

It was a pretty mixed ay, weather wise, but we met up in Ikebukuro as I was nearby for a meeting and I'd found some locations there last year that I wanted to shoot someone in.

Turns out that Kat is psychic... as she turned up in an outfit that matched, precisely, the colours in the location. We shot with a couple of sets of clothes but the first outfit, which you see in this shot, really popped in this spot.

One downside to the day was my slipping on some wet steps (it was raining on and off the whole time) and falling badly. I destroyed one Yongnuo flash and damaged another. I've had both of them for four... more »

However, bruised my back badly and my elbow and got a few cuts as well. Got it all x-rayed on Thursday and nothing's broken.

The show went on... cos that's what happens. We got some nice shots. I'll post some more soon. But there are a few more on my Instagram. See the link below.

Tokyo cityscape with telephoto lens: towards Roppongi and Mori Tower

Another from my recent trip up the Metropolitan Government Building and this again from the North Tower. We're looking towards Tokyo Bay and the big tall building at left background is Mori Tower in Roppongi. To the left of that you can just see one of the towers of the Rainbow Bridge.

Great view from here. Did a little bit of the de-haze filter in Photoshop's Camera Raw filter to crisp up the view and cut through the heat haze.

Architecture of Tokyo, shot with telephoto lens: Central Park Tower La Tour, Shinjuku, with the city behind it. Shot this from the North Observation Tower of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

For me Tokyo looks amazing through long lenses. It's already so dense but the additional perspective compression of the 300mm, for instance, just makes it look crazy dense.

Also loved the colours the glass and the reflections.. in contrast with the low-level, kind of monotone concrete character of everything behind the tower

Watching the city from Ginza 6: two ladies relaxing in Tokyo's newest, premium department store

Ginza 6, Tokyo's latest luxury department store development, opened about three months ago. Yesterday was my first visit. I've seen many pics of the main atrium, with Yayoi Kusama's lantern type creations adorning the space there. It was nice to finally have a quick walk around, see the wonderfully designed Tsutaya book shop and one or two other of the stores.

I was there, primarily, to check out the views from the 14th floor roof garden. Before I returned the HTS tilt-shift adaptor to Hasselblad, I just wanted to see what I could get from the roof of Ginza 6.

The corners of the roof space and the centre of each long side afforded me some cool views for the tilt-shift.

This shot, of two ladies enjoying the air-conned tranquility of the 13th floor and the view from there, was one from inside I spent a little time to get.

I'll be going back soon, to check out the store and take a few more pics.

Tokyo Tower in summer sunset light: 4-frame stitch, shot with 300mm lens

When I went out yesterday, I basically took just two rigs: the Hasselblad with the HTS tilt-shift adaptor - which makes my 80mm effectively 120mm [85mm on full-frame DSLR] - and the D800E with my 300mm f/4 on it.

Each camera produces very different colours and obviously a 300mm field of view is different to the effective 85mm field of view I had with the Hassie.

So, wanting to capture more of the scene with the Nikon than 300mm would allow, I shot four vertical frames and stitched them in Photoshop.

The full-rez version is over 13,000pixels wide.

I haven't done much to the colour in this. It was shot at 7200K white-balance and i just used the Image>Adjustments>Colour Balance tool in Photoshop to add some blue into the shadows.

Tokyo Toytown: shooting Tokyo with the Hasselblad HTS1.5 tilt-shift adaptor

Over the past week I've been shooting a lot with the HTS1.5 tilt-shift adaptor for my Hasselblad. I shoot with the H4D-40 and 80mm lens. The adaptor makes the lens 120mm or about 85mm equivalent on a full-frame DSLR.

Today I spent some time on the 40th floor of the World Trade Centre in Hammamatsucho, caught a great sunset and shot a bunch of other stuff besides the Tokyo Tower view.

This one came out nice. It was a great end to the long weekend.

Toy Town, Tokyo Style: shooting Tokyo in tilt-shift with Hasselblad HTS1.5

I'm currently shooting some artwork for a new music CD by a composer friend of mine and the name of the album is 'Dinkytown', so we thought it would be fun to shoot a few miniatures, to see if they worked.

I've had fun in the gaps between other jobs this week, shooting from a few high spots around Tokyo.

This was from the 28th floor of the L Building in Shinjuku, where Nikon has their Salon.

Tokyo Shorts: Tokyo in Slow Motion.... the local festival in our area

Quick video I put together this morning, with soundtrack I made, from the festival in our neighbourhood last night. It was getting dark so the Osmo in slow mode and high ISO doesnt look amazing. But it looks pretty nice, I think. Anyway, I like doing these little films and making the music. It's a therapeutic little hobby for me.

I recently came across an article on the FStoppers website, about a new website that sniffs your Lightroom-edited files, showing what exactly has been done to them.

‘Calling your bluff’, as the article said. Here’s what I think and why I don’t need my bluff called…..

I recently came across an article on the FStoppers website, about a new website that sniffs your Lightroom-edited files, showing what exactly has been done to them.

‘Calling your bluff’, as the article said. Here’s what I think and why I don’t need my bluff called…..

Ami in a sea of dots: the car park at our local horse-racing course

This place is somewhere I've been meaning to shoot for ages. It takes a day of strong sunshine to really make it pop. And you can't always freely just walk into the area, as it's really only open on race days.

But today was the Tokyo City Fleamarket and first of all I went down with my little boy, Charlie, to have a look around. I never go out without some sort of camera and this morning I had just the iPhone and the Osmo on me.

I shot some video, which came out really nicely and I'm working on a music video that will use that footage.

Later in the day, I went back with my daughter and shot some more video as well as a few stills.

Great location, fascinating light.

Charlie on the big wheel, Korakuen, Tokyo

Last Sunday, my youngest son and I went out for some fun at the amusement park near Tokyo Dome: Korakuen.

We did a few rides, managing to get into all the big, outdoor aerial ones before the rain arrived. They close a lot of the attractions when it rains.

By the time we hit the big wheel, it was raining but the view was still great.

Got this shot of Charlie sat thee enjoying the view.

Man, woman: shapes against the city, Hikarie, Shibuya

Another one I shot whilst out with my student yesterday. We stopped in to the Hikarie Building in Shibuya for a bit, mainly to shoot people's silhouettes against the view of Shinjuku you get from one of the windows there.

It's a good practice for people getting to grips with the various modes of metering. Here, we were spot metering off of the background to turn the people as dark as possible.

It's always a great spot to shoot and this shot I like because of the two very different people and different aspects I managed to get by the window: the business man on the phone and the lady walking past. One side-on, one with their back to me.

Summer in Tokyo: parasol silhouetted against Shibuya skyscraper

I was out yesterday, shooting with one of my students and looking at 'urban fragments'. We concentrate on something new each lesson and yesterday's session was all about narrowing one's view from the 'big picture' and concentrating solely on fragments of the city.

I got this as we walked up the footbridge to cross Shibuya Station on our way to the Hikarie Building.

Why I give clients all the RAW files

I read a lot of posts online, see a lot of threads on social media from photographers, about giving clients RAW files. Most photographers say ‘no, absolutely not’.

I have a different approach.

Stunning sunset from outside out front door, Omori, Tokyo.

Rainy season brings as well as the obvious rain, some wonderful skies. Summer here in Tokyo tends to break after the end of the rainy season. Once summer arrives, the skies tend to be what I would call 'BBB': 'Blue But Boring'.

Rainy season brings cloudscapes, character and drama.

This sunset, from last week, was one such example.

Shot this from outside the front door. We were about to head out for something to eat, so I dashed back in and got the Nikon to snap this before we left.

Lunch, lessons and laptops: Tokyo International Forum

This year is the 20th Anniversary of the opening of the Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho.

I've been shooting pictures in and around the building for 18 of those 20 years and some of the most satisfying are not the wide, sweeping vistas of the architecture. But, more simply, portrayals of how Tokyo's humans interact with and personalise their time amongst the fabric of the buildings.

On the walk down from the 7th floor, along the long ramp that descends all the way to ground level, there are a few spots where you can get a top-down view of the people sat on the black benches that dot one side of the Forum.

Lunchtime is the best time.

Tokyo Sky Tree, Tokyo Station & Bullet Train in One View

There's not too many easily accessible places you can find a shot with the bullet trains and Tokyo SkyTree in the same frame.

One of my favourites is the view you get from the very northern tip of the Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho.

You have to get up to the 7th floor and go right to the end of the building to see it. If you can manage to squeeze yourself into the very tip of the building, there's a small piece of flat glass window. The rest of the area is all 45degree windows. Great for shooting straight out of but the angle to this view is not really best done with the camera against a 45degree window.

I prefer monochrome here as there's not a huge amount of colour in the shot anyway.

Unicorn-spotting at Tokyu Plaza, Ginza

Saturdays in Ginza are a pretty good time to spot some fancy cars but there's fancy and there's the Lamborghini Countach LP-400.

Only 157 of this first production model of the Countach were made. I'm not sure how many are in Japan but I do know a couple of very voracious collectors of Lambos who live here and I wouldn't be surprised if this one is owned by one of them.

I was at the Tokyu Plaza with one of my photography students. Spotted this whilst shooting with her. She got a couple of great shots of it too.

We've been spending the weekend up at my wife's home town in Fukushima and her old elementary school, which recently closed because they opened a new one up the road, was the scene of some fun yesterday afternoon.

I went out for a little drive with my daughter and my youngest son and we had a little fun outside the school, with my Hasselblad H4D-40 and one speedlight.

New year, new fun: Mari Hirao in the studio

Never has there been a year more suited to total concentration on family, friends, work and creativity.

The last thing I want to do from today is to go anywhere near the news. So it's a perfect time to concentrate on meaningful things.Things that are positive, constructive, forward-looking.

I've been in the studio quite a bit already this year: four times in fact. That's a lot for me. I usually tend to work on portraits and fashion in the outdoors. But it's cold and I have a friend who has a little studio that I discovered last year and in which, this year, I've decided to spend a lot more time.

There'll be news soon about classes there.

Autumn in Tokyo: Momiji in our local park

One more from today's little trip over the road from our house to the local park.

The trees there have been late in turning red. No disappointments today. Spent the last 20mins of the sunshine and a half-hour of time after sunset getting a load of nice shots there.

Dreamy light, what there was of it. Love this old Mamiya lens on the Nikon. Such a joy to still be using it via this adaptor. Beautiful qualities to this glass.

Nikon with old Mamiya RB67 lens: shooting the momiji in my local park

Been a while since I've been in the big park near our house. Momiji were beautiful today. Used the last 20mins of the sun and the soft light after dusk to get a load of shots I'm very happy with. Working on a few autumn related projects at the moment, including CD packaging for a composer friend and a new issue of my magazine.

All the stuff today, including this, shot with Nikon D700 fitted with a Fotodiox adaptor and my old Mamiya RB67 127mm f/3.8 lens.

Porsche on the freeway above Ginza, Tokyo. Shot with Hasselblad H4D-40. Waited 45mins or so here, looking for single vehicles that worked in this frame and colour-scheme. Eventually, the waiting paid off.

Back at the Tokyu Plaza building again: shooting with a visitor to town

I was back at my favourite Tokyo building and view yesterday, shooting there with someone who books me for a tour/workshop each time he comes to Japan from the US.

Yesterday we spent shooting modern architecture around various parts of town, a nice counterpoint to the last day we spent with each other - when it was more traditional subject matter we were shooting.

We spent a little time shooting stills and timelapse at the Tokyu building.

This shot is my shot of his phone whilst it was recording a timelapse.

Cityscapes of Tokyo: density in Shinjuku

Shot this one back in March, from the 28th floor window where the Nikon Salon is situated. Great view from the windows just outside the lift.

Love this view. Really gives you an impression of the density of this part of town.

28 floors up is just about the right height for Tokyo. Not too high, not too low.

Tokyo from above: the bridge, Shinjuku

Shot this back in March of this year, from the 28th floor of a building near Shinjuku Station. 28th floor of this building is where the Nikon Salon is in Shinjuku. Come out the lift and you have some great views.

Hip-shot with the Kerlee 35mm f/1.2: crossing the road in Akihabara

Quick shot made the other day whilst I was out doing a workshop with someone in town from London.

I don't shoot from the hip because I'm afraid of people 'busting' me for shooting them. You never really have to worry about that in Japan. Pretty much everyone is chilled-out about photography and even if they aren't into having their picture taken, they aren't going to kick-off at you.

I shoot from the hip because I like the viewpoint: more visual drama and interest for me than an eye-height viewpoint.

Plus, guessing 3metres and guessing the framing when the camera is away from my eye are good exercise for me.

Pre-visualisation: using Nikon's Picture Control System to shoot in a specific aesthetic, a comparison between two styles

You can read another article on my website about why I use the Nikon Picture Control system [and download a few I have made] but I just wanted to write a quick post this morning which shows you a direct comparison between two of the styles.

Read the article at the link below....

Looking down on Tokyo, making toys out of the traffic: Tokyu Plaza, Ginza

The new Tokyu Plaza building in Ginza, Tokyo, has me a little obsessed. So, I went back there earlier this week to shoot the cars passing below.

Getting a high view in Tokyo is always a pretty good experience. One thing that really does it for me about the view from the new Tokyu Plaza building in Ginza is that is not just a great view out, it’s a great view straight down.

This shot: Nikon D3S
Nikkor 80-200mm lens
In-camera styled with 'Ektachrome P' picture control

Timelapse from the Tokyu Plaza Building in Ginza, Tokyo

Three views from up in the new Tokyo Plaza building in Ginza, one view from street level. All shot today with the 'timelapse' feature in the native iPhone camera app. I usually use another app but it wouldn't work today.

First time I have used Adobe Premiere for about 10 years.

Video edited and graded, titles made, music composed and performed - all by me, all within about four hours tonight.

I'm pretty happy with it for a first attempt.

Cosmos flowers on the Keihin Canal, Tokyo

I'm lucky to have this spot within five minutes walk of my house. It's a great place to get a little peace and quiet in the city, sit, think and just enjoy the view.

At this time of year it's also a great place to shoot some pics of the cosmos flowers, which line the banks of the canal.
