Shooting models in Tokyo: a walk and shoot with Norie

Been a couple of weeks since Norie and I did this shoot but we've done a few bits of work since then. Meeting up next week to organize a new shoot with her, for a friend who makes some amazing jewellery. Looking forward to that.

See a load more shots we did the day we did this one below, at this link:

Shooting for TokyoExtra in Ameyoko, Tokyo

It's already been a week since I shot this pic and it's been a busy and slightly weird week. But, great memories from shooting with +Iain Baker and +Francisco Nunez last week, for the +TOKYO EXTRA show.

We made this shot at a fave spot of mine, at the end of Ameyoko where it joins the main road by Okachimachi Station.

Use a long lens [in this case the 70-200mm] and you can get a lovely shot of people waiting to cross the road. The telephoto compresses the perspective, too, so you get a denser looking crowd.

Iain and Francisco had great fun shopping and walking the market. We also explored the little shrine in Ameyoko, which always amazes me as it sits right in the middle of the consumer madness happening below.

Great area to explore. And when the evening light starts to fall around... more »

Enevu Cube Light: shooting some fashion pics with one in Tokyo

A mate of mine here is promoting the new Enevu Cube Light and let me have a couple to play with. My daughter has one in the den she built in the 押し入れ [large Japanese cupboard] at home and won't give it back to me!

Great little light.

Had some fun with Norie the other evening, out in the streets around MidTown in Roppongi.

Little write-up and more shots here:

In Shibuya with the Kerlee 35mm f/1.2

I've been testing out a pre-production copy of the new Kerlee 35mm f/1.2 lens and whilst I haven't had so much time to shoot with it recently, because of a busy patch of work, the times I have been out with it have left me very impressed.

It's a manual-focus lens, which is fine for me. I shoot with a lot of manual lenses - many of which I have had since I was a kid - and whilst it's sometimes better to have an AF lens, manual does me fine 90% of the time.

I'll be writing a proper write-up of the lens soon.

This one from a week or so ago in Shibuya.

Shot from the hip, focused at 3metres.

Pokemon Go, Japan: 'Pikachu is on your left.....'

I was in Shibuya the other day shooting exclusively with the 300mm f/4 prime that I have for my Nikon. I do that sometimes: go out with just one prime lens, to keep my eyes fit and see what I can see.

I was shooting around the crossing and Pikachu made an appearance. The couple on the left in this picture, looking at their smartphone, sort of seemed to fit nicely with the idea of searching for characters with the new Pokemon Go app.

Out doing a 24hr test with the only Hasselblad X1D in Japan right now. My buddy and fellow former Hasselblad Ambassador, Derek Makishima, has finally passed out on the table in McDonalds. I'm backing up data now and we're charging batteries. We've been out shooting since 11am yesterday morning. It's currently just after 4am here in Tokyo. We're hitting Tsukiji market next. Great day of shooting. Looking forward to showing some of our shots at the Japan launch of the X1D in Tokyo on Friday. #hasselbladx1d #x1d #hasselblad #tokyo

Shooting sports in Japan: my eldest son's last sports-day at junior high-school

This week has been a busy week, mostly with shooting the four-day Advertising Week Asia event as their official photographer. Friday was spent teaching and having meetings, yesterday was spent shooting the junior high-school sports-day for the school magazine.

It is my eldest son's last year at the school and was his last sports-day. H has run the 100m for his school and the city. This shot was taken of him running as anchor in the relay. The kid running the leg before him had fallen on the last bend, leaving Joe a lot of catching -up to do. He lost the race by 2cms.... after re-gaining about 40m on the guy in front.

I use this cheap kit lens anywhere where there are bad conditions. In this case, a lot of dust and crap flying around and blowing in the wind. As long as you stop it down to f/8 or smaller, it's sharp as a razor.

I was sat on the curve in the track, just after the baton-change area.

I'd set the lens at around f/8 and manual focus. I was zone focusing to get as wide an area of the track as possible.

Camera was on C(H) mode, to fire rapidly.

I was cradling the camera in my hands, low and away from my face, just above the ground... and panning with the runners as they passed me.

Architectural photography in Tokyo: looking for a new angle on an old friend

The Mode Gakuen building in Tokyo is iconic and has been a feature of the Shinjuku skyline ever since I have lived here. Finished and opened in 2008, the building hosts a creative university and has always reminded me more than a little of London's 'Gerkin'.

As a building that has had my attention for eight years now, finding a new angle is always a fascinating challenge.

Re-visiting locations, whatever they may be, is one of the regular exercises I have as part of what I call my 'photographic gymnasium'. These are things I do regularly to keep my eye sharp, my mind keen and my approach from getting stale.

Photowalks in Tokyo: colours and textures of Moto-azabu

I went out with one of my photography students today, to have a wander around parts of Azabu with the intention of looking at texture and colour. Here’s some of my shots from the walk we had together.

Tokyo is a fascinating and multi-faceted city. Walk a few metres from any main road and you can suddenly find yourself in a quiet backstreet that has the feel of a small village. Tokyo is, perhaps, nothing more or less than thousands of villages strung together.

Read the full post and see more photos here....

Travel photography in Japan: assignment out-takes from Hyogo & Tottori

Photowalks in Japan: off the beaten track in Kamakura

Kamakura makes a great day-trip from Tokyo but it’s good to get away from the main touristy areas. This walk is one I have been doing for years. It’s great in any season, takes you through some amazing but quiet and tranquil shrines and brings you out to the Kamakura’s north beach.

Fashion photography in Tokyo: Norie in Ginza

One from the quick shoot we did on Sunday, which was mostly for a fella in town from New Zealand who wanted to learn how to use the city as a studio. So, we shot in a few locations with him doing most of the shooting, me doing the art-directing and advice.

But at each site I did a quick 'this is what I'd do here if it was my shoot' type of shot.

Norie: fashion shooting in Tokyo

Norie and I were out yesterday doing some shooting for a friend who has a jewellery brand. Eenabo Jewellery.

We started at Tokyo Fashion Week and then went for some lunch, shooting later around Harajuku. This was shot just around the corner from Hasselblad's place in Harajuku.

Not for the jewellery shoot, really, as it's not close enough up to see the pieces Norie was wearing. But I just like this spot and the red dress, white wall and yellow road markings made for a nice combo.

Shooting models in Tokyo: a walk and shoot with Norie

Been a couple of weeks since Norie and I did this shoot but we've done a few bits of work since then. Meeting up next week to organize a new shoot with her, for a friend who makes some amazing jewellery. Looking forward to that.

Full moon over The SkyTree: Tokyo, Japan

I was busy getting a shot around the other side of the viewing deck of this building or I would have got the moon right above the SkyTree.

But, it's not a bad shot.

Taken last October, whilst on a day out around Tokyo with a friend in town from Mexico.

We ended up here for the sunset.

Good lookout spot. Used to be awesome vie of Mount Fuji out of the opposite side, until a company built a 33-floor monolith in between this building and the view.

Wires, mirror, pigeon: photowalk in Akabane, Tokyo

Shot this last week, whilst out doing a lesson/tour for someone in town from France.

Akabane is a superb spot for a photowalk. Loads of interesting stuff to see. The day we were out, it was amazing weather. Loved the blue and orange combination here.

Saw the pigeons coming but got lucky with the bird that had its wings spread like you see here.

Portrait photography in Tokyo: the Nissan LEAF owner, for Nissan

Back in November of last year I was commissioned by an advertising agency to shoot a portrait of a Japanese Nissan LEAF owner, for display as a huge print on the Nissan-Renault stand at the 2015 COP21 Climate Talks.

It looks like a simple portrait but as usual there is a story to these things.....

Fashion photography in Tokyo: test shoot with Norie

Spent a few hours the other day out with Norie, shooting around Yoyogi and Shibuya.

Here's the first from the shoot. We got some great pictures.

This was shot with my Monochrome HC [high-contrast] 01 Picture Control. It's just been converted from RAW to TIFF, cropped and had a watermark added in Photoshop then saved as a JPEG. Apart from that, it's as it was shot.

I had a mixed week last week. David Bowie died, one of my websites got hacked to death, then Alan Rickman fucking died as well..... but.. but... I got to make these photos.

Do go and look at the article. There are 79 moments of absolute grace in there.

Photo tours, Tokyo, Japan: the benefits of touring with a professional photographer

I've been running photo tours of Tokyo and other parts of Japan for some years now. One of the main benefits - as told to me by the people who have been out with me - is that I am working professional and that seeing the city through my eyes is the most illuminating part of the experience.

Photo tours are rapidly becoming a big business and here in Tokyo there are quite a few people offering the service. That's great: variety is the spice of life, for sure, and each person who lives, works and shoots here has something to offer as a tour guide and photographer-guide.

What's special about my tours? I shoot a lot for travel and inflight magazines, creating stories about Tokyo and other areas of Japan that are published to entice people to visit, inform them,... more »

What's special about my tours? I shoot a lot for travel and inflight magazines, creating stories about Tokyo and other areas of Japan that are published to entice people to visit, inform them, educate them. I also shoot fashion, portraits, cars and many other subjects where I am using the city as my studio.

These skills, this experience - together with knowing the city like the back of my hand - makes me someone who can help visitors have a great time here and learn with their camera.

Find an article here about my tours and workshops and read some of the feedback from people I've created tours for.

If you're planning a trip to Japan, please look me up. I love meeting new people, showing them around my city and helping them get great shots.

Getting back from disaster: website coming together nicely

*It's a couple or three days since my Japanorama website was hacked to death. I have all the old database of content but it's not all going to go back: there were about 1600 articles on the old site.

Some important pages for business [walks, tours, photography] are back online, as is the photography map article.

Like this template and I am only using about 10% of its potential right now.

Sometimes I pander to old rockers

+Iain Baker will hate me for calling him an old rocker after all, he's only 342 years old :-)

Seriously though how could I, as a British man versed in the arts of sarcasm, not use the presence of a panda to make a cheap joke?

I've lived in Tokyo for years but I had never set foot inside Ueno Zoo. My kids have been loads of times. It was great fun. +Francisco Nunez and Iain both have a great sense of humour so we had a blast walking around the zoo together: three lads wandering around and checking out the animals. Awesome fun.

This big furry panda was, it has to be said, almost as animated as the real-life ones. Decidedly more upright, that's for sure.

In a lovely patch of morning sun, we found the real pandas flat-out having a sleep.

Plussed in Ameyoko: Iain & Francisco for TokyoExtra

Over the years Google Plus has been running, I've used these plus symbols you get at junctions in Japan as a bit of a visual link for people I'm shooting to post on here.

This one is at the junction of the street that crosses about the halfway point of Ameyokocho market. Great spot, plus or not. But for these fellas, +Iain Baker and +Francisco Nunez, who were out doing a walk and shoot with me for the +TOKYO EXTRA show it proved to be a perfect place to stop and snap a shot.

I shot this in monochrome in the camera but decided to take it all one or two steps further in Photoshop, using Silver Efex Pro2 to take the monochrome a little different direction. The Hasselblad style frame is one I scanned in years ago from a transparency I shot in an old Hasselblad 500CM camera. Thought it worked nice... more »

Japanorama website hacked off the air

My Japanorama website was hacked this week and it's going to be a whole before I get anything sizeable back online.

All the backups on the server were also hacked.

Neither my blog or my portfolio site were hacked so they are both still fine.

So, bear with me. There are a lot of posts here that link to articles on the old site. I have the database with the articles in it but the site structure was trashed and I am basically using this as an opportunity to get something new done with the site, take it in a new direction.

Hope to have something substantial to show you soon.

Sorry for the mess.....

All there is left for now is something on the wayback machine, here:

Tokyo Extra shoot wrapped: an excellent couple of days

Had a ton of fun with +Iain Baker and +Francisco Nunez the past couple of days, shooting stills to promote the +TOKYO EXTRA show they present on GPlus and You Tube.

They're at TBS tonight and here's a link through to the live show of Tokyo Extra. The show starts at 00:30hrs Tokyo time.

https://goo.gl/sujJqr

Looking forward to sharing the stills with you all soon.

Highlight for me was getting to jam with Iain in the karaoke studio at Shibuya Modi, where there was a full set of instruments as well as the usual karaoke mics. Great fun. Kind of surreal. Was a big Jesus Jones fan back in the day. Goofing around with Iain today was such a blast.

Having a great day shooting with a couple of the +TOKYO EXTRA guys in town today.

Aerospatiale Super Puma in Yokohama, Japan

You don't see too many of these choppers in Japan as they are usually much more common in oilfield and offshore operations of that nature, of which Japan has none.

The Japan Coastguard uses them though and I think they are the only user in the country.

It's a big helicopter. I flew in the British Army Pumas a few times. But the AS-332L1 Super Puma is a much bigger beast.

...as was the lens I shot this on: the lovely HC 300mm f/4.5 Hasselblad lens, mounted on my H4D-40.

This is a full crop of the shot and a crop into the chopper at 100%. It's a sharp lens. Beautiful to use. Not light but very well balanced.

This was shot at f/6.3, 200ISO and about 1/500th sec.

A pre-Christmas visit to the shrine: Asakusa, Tokyo

I hope you are all having a great Christmas and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for visiting my GPlus pages this year, leaving your comments and clicking those PlusOnes.

Miss film, miss the discipline, miss the more finite parameters?
Shoot your DSLR a a fixed white-balance and in a particular, fixed colour or mono style. It's just like going out with a roll of film in the camera.

I shot the a few days ago, just before Christmas, at Sensoji in Asakusa, Tokyo.

Was out doing a tour for a couple in town from the US.

After sun-down the lights come on at the temple and at the main entrance to the shrine, where people stop and throw in their money and make their prayer, there are a couple of flood-lights... which give you great cross lighting.

Standing just inside and getting a shot out towards where the money gets thrown in is always a good angle.

Catching these ladies in kimono was a nice bonus.

Nikon D3S
Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 Ai
Ektachrome P picture control [which simulates Ektachrome pushed a couple of stops]
WB set to about 4600K

A few recent takes on Sensoji Templa, Asakusa, Tokyo

This is another place I like to go back to and shot regularly and there are some challenges here to get the right shot.

All shots made with the Nikon D3S, 50mm and 28mm prime lenses. Monochrome done in-camera.
