Tokyo from above: the bridge, Shinjuku

Shot this back in March of this year, from the 28th floor of a building near Shinjuku Station. 28th floor of this building is where the Nikon Salon is in Shinjuku. Come out the lift and you have some great views.

The city at my feet: Tokyo's Yurakucho & Ginza districts shot from above

Looking forward to doing some long exposures at night soon, at this location. I've helped students and people doing tours with me to do some but haven't had a go at it myself yet.

Great spot. The 14mm really makes it pop.

Some recent portraits of my kids, using the Hasselblad H4D-40

I've been really busy of late so it was nice to get out of the city for a few days recently, including an overnight stay in Nikko. 15cms of snow overnight was a nice surprise, too.

This year has been pretty busy so far, which is nice. My wife started full-time work again recently so our opportunities to get away have been limited.

We recently had to visit Fukushima, to pay respects at my father-in-law's grave on the one-year anniversary of his death. We spent a couple of days in our home town in Fukushima and planned an overnighter in Nikko, on the way back to Tokyo.

I recently came across an article on the FStoppers website, about a new website that sniffs your Lightroom-edited files, showing what exactly has been done to them.

‘Calling your bluff’, as the article said. Here’s what I think and why I don’t need my bluff called…..

The article mentions EXIF and several commentators on the FStoppers website were mentioning EXIF data, so that’s why I started my response with a mention of EXIF.

Ami in a sea of dots: the car park at our local horse-racing course

This place is somewhere I've been meaning to shoot for ages. It takes a day of strong sunshine to really make it pop. And you can't always freely just walk into the area, as it's really only open on race days.

But today was the Tokyo City Fleamarket and first of all I went down with my little boy, Charlie, to have a look around. I never go out without some sort of camera and this morning I had just the iPhone and the Osmo on me.

I shot some video, which came out really nicely and I'm working on a music video that will use that footage.

Later in the day, I went back with my daughter and shot some more video as well as a few stills.

Great location, fascinating light.

Charlie on the big wheel, Korakuen, Tokyo

Last Sunday, my youngest son and I went out for some fun at the amusement park near Tokyo Dome: Korakuen.

We did a few rides, managing to get into all the big, outdoor aerial ones before the rain arrived. They close a lot of the attractions when it rains.

By the time we hit the big wheel, it was raining but the view was still great.

Got this shot of Charlie sat thee enjoying the view.

Man, woman: shapes against the city, Hikarie, Shibuya

Another one I shot whilst out with my student yesterday. We stopped in to the Hikarie Building in Shibuya for a bit, mainly to shoot people's silhouettes against the view of Shinjuku you get from one of the windows there.

It's a good practice for people getting to grips with the various modes of metering. Here, we were spot metering off of the background to turn the people as dark as possible.

It's always a great spot to shoot and this shot I like because of the two very different people and different aspects I managed to get by the window: the business man on the phone and the lady walking past. One side-on, one with their back to me.

Summer in Tokyo: parasol silhouetted against Shibuya skyscraper

I was out yesterday, shooting with one of my students and looking at 'urban fragments'. We concentrate on something new each lesson and yesterday's session was all about narrowing one's view from the 'big picture' and concentrating solely on fragments of the city.

I got this as we walked up the footbridge to cross Shibuya Station on our way to the Hikarie Building.

Why I give clients all the RAW files

I read a lot of posts online, see a lot of threads on social media from photographers, about giving clients RAW files. Most photographers say ‘no, absolutely not’.

I have a different approach.

Read about it here on my website:

Stunning sunset from outside out front door, Omori, Tokyo.

Rainy season brings as well as the obvious rain, some wonderful skies. Summer here in Tokyo tends to break after the end of the rainy season. Once summer arrives, the skies tend to be what I would call 'BBB': 'Blue But Boring'.

Rainy season brings cloudscapes, character and drama.

This sunset, from last week, was one such example.

Shot this from outside the front door. We were about to head out for something to eat, so I dashed back in and got the Nikon to snap this before we left.

Lunch, lessons and laptops: Tokyo International Forum

This year is the 20th Anniversary of the opening of the Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho.

I've been shooting pictures in and around the building for 18 of those 20 years and some of the most satisfying are not the wide, sweeping vistas of the architecture. But, more simply, portrayals of how Tokyo's humans interact with and personalise their time amongst the fabric of the buildings.

On the walk down from the 7th floor, along the long ramp that descends all the way to ground level, there are a few spots where you can get a top-down view of the people sat on the black benches that dot one side of the Forum.

Lunchtime is the best time.

Tokyo Sky Tree, Tokyo Station & Bullet Train in One View

There's not too many easily accessible places you can find a shot with the bullet trains and Tokyo SkyTree in the same frame.

One of my favourites is the view you get from the very northern tip of the Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho.

You have to get up to the 7th floor and go right to the end of the building to see it. If you can manage to squeeze yourself into the very tip of the building, there's a small piece of flat glass window. The rest of the area is all 45degree windows. Great for shooting straight out of but the angle to this view is not really best done with the camera against a 45degree window.

I prefer monochrome here as there's not a huge amount of colour in the shot anyway.

Unicorn-spotting at Tokyu Plaza, Ginza

Saturdays in Ginza are a pretty good time to spot some fancy cars but there's fancy and there's the Lamborghini Countach LP-400.

Only 157 of this first production model of the Countach were made. I'm not sure how many are in Japan but I do know a couple of very voracious collectors of Lambos who live here and I wouldn't be surprised if this one is owned by one of them.

I was at the Tokyu Plaza with one of my photography students. Spotted this whilst shooting with her. She got a couple of great shots of it too.

Charlie Potter: having fun at the old school, Ishikawa-machi, Fukushima

We've been spending the weekend up at my wife's home town in Fukushima and her old elementary school, which recently closed because they opened a new one up the road, was the scene of some fun yesterday afternoon.

I went out for a little drive with my daughter and my youngest son and we had a little fun outside the school, with my Hasselblad H4D-40 and one speedlight.

New year, new fun: Mari Hirao in the studio

Never has there been a year more suited to total concentration on family, friends, work and creativity.

The last thing I want to do from today is to go anywhere near the news. So it's a perfect time to concentrate on meaningful things.Things that are positive, constructive, forward-looking.

I've been in the studio quite a bit already this year: four times in fact. That's a lot for me. I usually tend to work on portraits and fashion in the outdoors. But it's cold and I have a friend who has a little studio that I discovered last year and in which, this year, I've decided to spend a lot more time.

There'll be news soon about classes there.

But, for now, here is a shot I made with a student's camera a few days ago, whilst I was teaching him some basic lighting techniques.... more »

But, for now, here is a shot I made with a student's camera a few days ago, whilst I was teaching him some basic lighting techniques.

Hit the link at the bottom for more shots and a little write-up of a day spent out with two of my students, shooting pics to evoke a sense of motion through some of Tokyo's underground spaces.

Autumn in Tokyo: Momiji in our local park

One more from today's little trip over the road from our house to the local park.

The trees there have been late in turning red. No disappointments today. Spent the last 20mins of the sunshine and a half-hour of time after sunset getting a load of nice shots there.

Dreamy light, what there was of it. Love this old Mamiya lens on the Nikon. Such a joy to still be using it via this adaptor. Beautiful qualities to this glass.

Nikon with old Mamiya RB67 lens: shooting the momiji in my local park

Been a while since I've been in the big park near our house. Momiji were beautiful today. Used the last 20mins of the sun and the soft light after dusk to get a load of shots I'm very happy with. Working on a few autumn related projects at the moment, including CD packaging for a composer friend and a new issue of my magazine.

All the stuff today, including this, shot with Nikon D700 fitted with a Fotodiox adaptor and my old Mamiya RB67 127mm f/3.8 lens.

A little bit of nature, a little bit of urban: shooting Hibiya Park & Ginza on an autumn day

A few hours out shooting with a regular student from Germany gave us the opportunity to soak up some autumn colours in Hibiya Park and some urban density in Ginza.

Lots more pics at the link below.

Back at the Tokyu Plaza building again: shooting with a visitor to town

I was back at my favourite Tokyo building and view yesterday, shooting there with someone who books me for a tour/workshop each time he comes to Japan from the US.

Yesterday we spent shooting modern architecture around various parts of town, a nice counterpoint to the last day we spent with each other - when it was more traditional subject matter we were shooting.

We spent a little time shooting stills and timelapse at the Tokyu building.

This shot is my shot of his phone whilst it was recording a timelapse.

Cityscapes of Tokyo: density in Shinjuku

Shot this one back in March, from the 28th floor window where the Nikon Salon is situated. Great view from the windows just outside the lift.

Love this view. Really gives you an impression of the density of this part of town.

28 floors up is just about the right height for Tokyo. Not too high, not too low.

Hip-shot with the Kerlee 35mm f/1.2: crossing the road in Akihabara

Quick shot made the other day whilst I was out doing a workshop with someone in town from London.

I don't shoot from the hip because I'm afraid of people 'busting' me for shooting them. You never really have to worry about that in Japan. Pretty much everyone is chilled-out about photography and even if they aren't into having their picture taken, they aren't going to kick-off at you.

I shoot from the hip because I like the viewpoint: more visual drama and interest for me than an eye-height viewpoint.

Plus, guessing 3metres and guessing the framing when the camera is away from my eye are good exercise for me.

You can read another article on my website about why I use the Nikon Picture Control system [and download a few I have made] but I just wanted to write a quick post this morning which shows you a direct comparison between two of the styles.

Looking down on Tokyo, making toys out of the traffic: Tokyu Plaza, Ginza

The new Tokyu Plaza building in Ginza, Tokyo, has me a little obsessed. So, I went back there earlier this week to shoot the cars passing below.

Getting a high view in Tokyo is always a pretty good experience. One thing that really does it for me about the view from the new Tokyu Plaza building in Ginza is that is not just a great view out, it’s a great view straight down.

Timelapse from the Tokyu Plaza Building in Ginza, Tokyo

Three views from up in the new Tokyo Plaza building in Ginza, one view from street level. All shot today with the 'timelapse' feature in the native iPhone camera app. I usually use another app but it wouldn't work today.

First time I have used Adobe Premiere for about 10 years.

Video edited and graded, titles made, music composed and performed - all by me, all within about four hours tonight.

I'm pretty happy with it for a first attempt.

Cosmos flowers on the Keihin Canal, Tokyo

I'm lucky to have this spot within five minutes walk of my house. It's a great place to get a little peace and quiet in the city, sit, think and just enjoy the view.

At this time of year it's also a great place to shoot some pics of the cosmos flowers, which line the banks of the canal.

Kerlee 35mm f/1.2 lens: first impressions & review

When I heard about the new Kerlee 35mm f/1.2 lens, I immediately got in touch with Shenzhen Dongzheng Optics in China to get hold of one to try. Very graciously, they obliged. Here are few of my first impressions and photos…..

I don’t really do gear reviews. I don’t live on ‘rumours’ websites. I’m not sitting waiting for the next big announcement from camera companies. I use what I have until it’s dead. Sometimes I see something super cool and find the money for it. But, mostly, my philosophy comes from what mum and dad taught me: use what you have, make it last, don’t always sit around wishing for something new.

Photos and more words here:

Great angle on the trains here and the proximity of the billboards makes for a lovely dense feeling.

H Marks The Spot: view into Yurakucho from Tokyu Plaza Building

The new Tokyu Plaza Building has created a lovely new vantage point in the centre of Tokyo. Just a few minutes walk from Yurakucho and the Ginza 4-chome, the new Tokyu Plaza building has a superb view from its 11th floor rooftop terrace.

It's not open, so you are shooting through glass but the view is nonetheless new and unique.

Great views of Ginza, the zebra-crossing below and areas around Yurakucho.

Less gear, less time, more exercise: the 'cup ramen' shoots

Over the last couple or three years, I’ve done a few of what I call ‘cup ramen shoots’. The idea is basically to shoot a fashion set in about the time it would take to unwrap, add boiling water to and prepare a cup-ramen [cup noodle]. Which, depending on the variety of noodle, is between 3 and 5minutes. It’s a bit of a laugh. It’s also very good exercise for me, my model and – if it’s part of a lesson – my students.

Just like for athletes, I think it’s really important for creative professionals to have exercises and routines to keep fit. I have a few of my own which also get me out of the creative ruts I often find myself in; those times of the month where you just take a look at your work and think ‘this is crap and I’ve lost my mojo’.

Just like for athletes, I think it’s really important for creative professionals to have exercises and routines to keep fit. I have a few of my own which also get me out of the creative ruts I often find myself in; those times of the month where you just take a look at your work and think ‘this is crap and I’ve lost my mojo’.

The ‘cup-ramen shoot’ is one of these exercises. I usually mix it up with one or two of the other ‘creative gymnasium’ routines that I have: one prime lens, one light, one gel, one modifier.

Yesterday I’d been doing an all-day photo tour/lesson with Michael, who is in Japan for a month from Germany. It’s his first trip here. We visited a load of cool places during the day and as Michael likes shooting models – in and out of the studio – we decided to hook up with Norie in Shibuya for a quick shoot and a beer to end the day.

Everything we did took about 30mins, which included finding the location, thinking about the setup, Michael shooting what he wanted to and me shooting a few frames (the cup-ramen part, as all my shots took less than 5mins).

Michael told me he had a great day. Seeing the very quick setup I shot gave him, he said, real inspiration to pare things down a lot and concentrate on limiting himself more. Limitations, IMHO, are a great way of focusing and honing your skills. Limitations like:

One light.
Monochrome only
3200K only
5min time limit
36shots only
No deletes
One prime.
etc etc….

Keep it simple. Do it often. The eye is a muscle. So is your brain. They need regular exercise. Repetition and routine can be very useful for keeping the photographer fit and on the ball.

Gear used in this shot:

Nikon D3S
14mm f/2.8
1 x Nikon SB-800 (held by my student)
Radio trigger for the flash
1 x green gel___

Yesterday's sunset, from our roof in Tokyo

Amazing sunset yesterday which I was fortunate enough to spot during a break in some work. Headed up to our roof with the first camera/lens that fell to my hand and quickly got some snaps before everything was over.

One RAW file used here. Not HDR.

Waiting to cross, Tateishi, Tokyo

This spot in East Tokyo is one of my favourite old little areas to explore. Great old streets, great street food, lovely friendly locals.

..and there's a train about every 30secs.
