Seems suspicious that Windows can get away with this again.

Not only advertising Edge from Windows, but also the disingenuous timing of advertising when Chrome first boots up so (assumedly) they can point and say, "Look, Chrome is using so much memory!", even though it minimizes pretty immediately after startup.

Doooooope. Dope. Dope.

It sucks that current technology would take ~700,000 years to get a probe out there for samples, but at least we are starting to see more cool things from afar.

Seven Earth-size planets have been found around a single star. "Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water."

The planets are orbiting a tiny, cold dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1 about 40 light-years from here, and were found by the Spitzer space telescope.___Doooooope. Dope. Dope.

"The purpose of sleep? To forget." "The synapses in the brains of sleeping mice, Luisa de Vivo and her colleagues found, were 18 percent smaller than in awake ones."

"In one experiment, Graham H. Diering and his colleagues created a tiny window through which they could peer into mouse brains. Then he and his colleagues added a chemical that lit up a surface protein on brain synapses. Looking through the window, they found that the number of surface proteins dropped during sleep. That decline is what you would expect if the synapses were shrinking."

This is awesome.

But on a less-awesome, more-dystopian note, here's an interesting anecdote from HN:

Star Trek depicted one of the scarier applications of such a technology: There, The Jem'Hadaar are a genetically engineered race of warriors controlled by the Dominion, who exert power over them by being the sole provider of a substance (Ketracel-White) that they need in order to survive:

If my reading of the paper is correct, the unnatural XY base pair doesn't have any function per se, but without it the organism fails to replicate its DNA and quickly dies. Hence you can argue that after introducing it, the XY base pair has a vital function, as without it the organism can't survive anymore. And since the organism has no way to synthesize X & Y itself, it needs to be supplied from the outside for its whole lifetime. This, in turn, provides a neat way to... more »

And since the organism has no way to synthesize X & Y itself, it needs to be supplied from the outside for its whole lifetime. This, in turn, provides a neat way to build "self-terminating" organisms that depend on a steady supplement of the given substance. One could of course argue that vitamins are exactly the same, but contrary to those the artificial base pairs would not be found in the wild, so supply could be controlled more easily.___

Markov models and n-grams show Indus script in Iraq was different from Indus script in Pakistan and India. The article describes more research that is planned, including machine learning and what essentially amounts to an OCR system for Indus script. Research efforts on the Indus script are plagued with political controversy, as different political groups within India want to claim to be descendants of the Indus Valley Civilization.

#signalboost for the writers :)

Here are seven agents looking for fantasy of all kinds, shapes, and colors. All are from reputable agencies, which means they don't charge reading fees. (Never pay an agent to read your work!) All have brokered deals with established publishing houses, and all are seeking fresh, new talent. Good luck!

This story's been shared over and over since it happened, but it should still be blowing your mind.

A neural computing system designed to translate content from one human language into another developed its own internal language to make the task more efficient. Without being told to do so. In a matter of weeks.

Ignore the clickbait headline: they're talking about Google Translate's new zero-shot translation engine.

"The researchers, led by Dr. Sebastian Thrun, an adjunct professor at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, reported in the January 25 issue of Nature that their deep convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm performed as well or better than 21 board-certified dermatologists at diagnosing skin cancer.

Diagnosing skin cancer begins with a visual examination. A dermatologist usually looks at the suspicious lesion with the naked eye and with the aid of a dermatoscope, which is a handheld microscope that provides low-level magnification of the skin. If these methods are inconclusive or lead the dermatologist to believe the lesion is cancerous, a biopsy is the next step. This deep learning algorithm may help dermatologists decide which skin lesions to biopsy."___I'm so tired of all the politics that have crept into my G+ stream the past couple months. This'll be really interesting to see how it pans out. With multiple countries here in EU running similar studies, I hope we can find a working system to help the world's homeless soon.

San Francisco is launching an experiment to give families free money.

There will be four groups overall: families with 1-year-olds, families with 3-year-olds, families receiving other forms of assistance (such as nursing care), and families receiving nothing. So far, OFE has planned for a $5 million budget in San Francisco. Families will receive between $1,000 and $2,000 a month.

I'm not sure how much $2,000/month cover in San Francisco tough... ___This'll be really interesting to see how it pans out. With multiple countries here in EU running similar studies, I hope we can find a working system to help the world's homeless soon.

The caudate nucleus has been implicated in the brain's ability to focus and ignore distractions. "The researchers found that if they frequently paired a specific face with incorrect names -- for example, Leonardo DiCaprio's face with the names Pitt, Cruise, or Damon -- participants became better at identifying the face and ignoring the names."

"Since there is no way of knowing in advance which face will appear, or if the name will match, the only way to get faster is if the face itself directly triggers the brain to focus on the face and ignore the name, said Egner, who is also a member of Duke's Institute for Brain Sciences."

"If 75% of the time Leonardo DiCaprio appears with other people's names, you learn that when you see DiCaprio's face, you should ignore the distracting word."

An AI system predicted the the judicial decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) with 79% accuracy.

"As the co-author of this study explains, the machine learned how to combine the abstract 'topics' (such as the right to privacy, or the incidence of negligence) with the 'circumstances' section across the 584 cases it was given to chew over."

"In fact in this instance the research team were hobbled by data protection and privacy laws: they were not allowed to look at the applications that were actually submitted to the court. All they had to go on were the published judgments."

"In other words, the AI machine achieved a staggeringly high prediction level of judicial outcomes, with hardly any data to go on."
