I haven't had much time to look into the changes made by G+, but I do know that every time I think I've understood them, I see something I don't understand.

It seems like the albums have all been removed, so I can't visit someone's profile and browse their album any more (a step backwards in my view).
Now we have collections - but I can't move my old photos to collections (I think) without reposting each and every one, which would be frightfully irritating for all of you!

When I do go to someone's profile - like +Heidi Anne Morris, I see her collections and I can see that I follow some of them, but not others! Who makes the decision that I am NOT following her "I'm Inspired" collection (to name one)? Is it up to the person who creates the collection or is it Google (because it certainly wasn't me)?

Also... I go into a... more »

Yesterday I had planned to shoot Brimham Rocks during sunrise, but was a bit late getting out of bed.  I'm happy with that. The journey gave me this view, which I would otherwise have missed - taken a few minutes out of Otley ,Yorkshire UK.

I shared this on a community site yesterday - but as I understand it, I need to do a regular post for those who follow me (and are not in that community) to see it. If I'm wrong, I apologize ;-) - - - - - - - - -

A shot of Whitby Pier, taken last week. It's not the processing I'd usually go for, but I thought I'd try this out. I do like the angle, which I probably would not have tried, if not for forgetting my tripod and being forced into using a sock filled with bird seeds to hold the camera.
I guess every cloud has a silver lining.

You can't see it in the picture, but the guy on the beach is carrying a lens larger than my thigh.

Seriously - it made my 55-300mm look like a toothpick.

I still feel slightly insulted.

The B&W Project - The Rule of Odds

+The B&W Project #bwproject2016 hosted by +Al Chris and +Lauri Novak

I've taken a lot of shots for this project in the last week or so - I had planned to post a shot of wind turbines (3), but "someone" beat me to it (should teach me not to take family members on photo trips!) :-D

The shot below is taken at Teesmouth beach - a fantastic place if you are into wildlife, surrounded by huge factories, smoke and ships.
I'm not sure if I've even got the theme right - as I'm not sure how you count the "odds". One man, one dog, one ship and one branch - all one, but make up four. Two "dead" items (ship & branch) and two life items (man & dog). That's a double even!
I see it as a ship, man and dog - making up three items..... so odd number ;-) - I haven't... more »

Week 3/26 - Emotion
#BWProject2016
+The B&W Project - Curated by +Lauri Novak and +Al Chris

Taken a couple of days ago, in (what I consider) perfect weather. I actually shot this for another project (on FB), but when I noticed the expression on the sheep's face, just as it grabbed a mouthful of hay, I felt the shot fitting for this theme as well ;-)
I'll admit to letting a tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny bit of colour through, around the sheep's head/hay, just to guide the eye of the viewer, but as it's only brownish/yellow..... I'm classifying it as "sepia" :-D

Since my hard drive failure, I've been busy setting things up properly (I've now signed up for Crashplan, who will have everything backed up in 2-3 months).

Whilst moving and deleting files, I've been looking at shots from when I started getting into photography - and it's been very informative. Firstly, I see I've become incredibly boring in a very short time. I used get silly ideas and run with them; now it's all become proper and boring.

Secondly, I love how old shots - shots I sneered at "back then", have limitless possibilities when looked at a few years later. Certainly experience plays a part there - I am quicker at identifying which process would suit a certain shot , and today I know more about how to get the results I want.

More on all of this later. Off to look at mattresses with the missus. Out with backaches, in with sleep... more »

A curious little building, found on New Years Eve near Arthington Park, Yorkshire.

I've spent the evening going through most of my previous posts, moving many into Collections. I've got one question, if anyone can help; do I have any control over the order of my collections (my least used collection - After Hours - is listed first, whilst the one I use the most - B&W Land & Water - is near the bottom)?

Anyway - after all this work, Google better not make any major changes for a few years.... :-)

DESTINATION

I'm a bit late, as I was working on the 1 & 2 of January. Hope that is OK.

Due to a hard drive failure, I'm using what I've got on the main drive - this shot was taken in early December. Again - hope that is OK - I'll definitely shot specifically for the project from now on!

I stumbled on this disused stable after six hours of hiking on a windy day. Delighted to have some shelter before continuing - I used the time to take some shots..... some even weirder than this one ;-)

Yesterday in Otley, Yorkshire UK. River Wharfe is overflowed and starting to make it's way into surrounding houses.

Areas in Yorkshire, Wales and Cumbria have been hard hit recently - and more to come, it seems. I live in a relatively safe town, but the flooding all around is devastating to look at - yet fascinating (I admit guiltily).

A day I'll never forget - Friday 13th of November, 2015. My wife was defending her doctoral thesis whilst I wandered around aimlessly. Taking pictures - sure - but mostly thinking of ways to console the missus, just in case the defence would end badly :-)

This is one of the university buildings - no idea what it's called, but it's a building I'd like to revisit at a later date (in better form!)

Also... I go into a collection (yes, I've made a few) and try to post. The choices are to post "Public" or post to the collection?! So if I want to post public, I can't organise those shots into collections... or... arrrrgghhhhhh ;-)

Now - I'm not really expecting anyone to walk me through this, but if anyone knows of a really good write-up, which explains how to move from good old G+ to the new, scary G+ (without having a nervous breakdown or turning to the bottle), I'd really appreciate a link.

And, yes, I do realize that the service is free - and the current setup is probably better for those just starting G+.... so I'm  bloody well not angry about the changes - just very, very, very, very confused at the moment :-D___

When taking the dog out for a walk, I am a creature of habit. I know which walks are safe - places he can run around doing his thing, whilst I relax and take pictures.
A few days ago during one of our walks, I turned right - instead of the usual left. I found this tree (and the horse). Hiking distance from my house and I've never seen it before.

There's a lesson there.

And speaking of lessons - where is the "Photos" button, or something similar? I need to delete a few pictures but I can't see a link to my albums any more? ;-)

I need to delete a few pictures but I can't see a link to my albums any more? ;-)

When Google decided to change everything regarding G-Plus, a while back, I decided to stay away for a while. Come back later and see if the network was still usable.
Not sure if they've done all the changes, but I can't see any difference - apart from some new things like "Pages" and "Collections" in the drop-down menu - and there is some difference in uploading. I'm guessing G+ is not dead?

Which, if correct, is good.

Here's a shot I posted on Facebook a few days ago. Road to Cumbria.

1.5 million bricks laid in a specific way - forming Ribblehead Viaduct (Yorkshire, UK), built in 1870 - 1874. This fascinating structure, made up of 24 arches and spanning 400 metres, cuts through the landscape in a most beautiful way.

I've got nothing more to say on the subject - hope you're all having a good day ;-) - - - -

Common Frog - Rana temporaria

I walked past a frog pond (Chevin Woods) earlier today - and things were pretty hectic! Dozens of frogs, all at it - and the sounds were quite.... disturbing. I'll just leave you a short description from Wikipedia, which explains what I was looking at ;-)

"The females are attracted to the males that produce the loudest and longest calls and enter the water where the males mill around and try to grasp them with their front legs — although they may grasp anything of a similar size, such as a piece of wood. The successful male climbs on the back of the female and grasps her under the forelegs with his nuptial pads, in a position known as amplexus, and kicks away any other males that try to grasp her."

Another local tree - I've photographed this one so many times I'll probably end up buying a dedicated hard drive for it! I'm after a specific look in black & white - but thus far either the tree, the conditions or my equipment have let me down [whistles innocently as he turns away from the mirror].

This shot, however, has nothing to do with the aforementioned quest - it's a shot I took last week, whilst my daughter was walking the dog and me.

A tree I've walked past a thousand times - and never shown any interest in.

Until "the assistant" posed next to it, begging me to take a picture.

Or maybe it was the light that day - and Castro (seeing me point my camera at something) just had to get in there. He's irritating in that way.

A Moment Missed

The first light of day, falling on a bench on Saltburn-by-the-Sea pier.

I had to look at the RAW earlier to figure out why "the shadow" was underneath the bench. This happens when you edit into B&W and then leave the shot for too long. Turns out it's just discolouration and mould!

Hope you are having an entertaining (or relaxing) Saturday evening ;-) - - - - - - - - - -

Cluster of Hope

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
(Dylan Thomas)

The local church - built in the mid 13th centry, except for the tower (14th century) and - nave, chancel, north aisle and vestries which were added in 1910. From this angle, the church may look like a strange concoction of buildings, but I find it fascinating.
The mausoleum/grave in the foreground, belongs to Joseph Padgett of Tranfield Lodge - I've not found any information on him, but it seems like he was an important person.

As an atheist I do not frequent the church, but one day I'd like to spend a day there, inside, with my camera.

IN MEMORIAM II

As can be seen in this image, the largest branch of the tree, has broken off (see last post for comparison). I'm hoping this is due to nature, not man - as I can accept the former, not the latter.

Now, I realise the tree is still beautiful, albeit different - but the large arm provided such a unique, fascinating mood - a mood I always saw as despair, for some reason - that it will take me a long time to accept the change.

Still - who knows?  It might grow in a different way and become more beautiful than ever. In fact - it's incredibly selfish of me even to worry about how it will look.

Anyway - the day I discovered what had happened, I was there with my two daughters. It was a beautiful day - blue sky, green fields and sunshine. As far away from the mood I was after for this shot, as possible.

IN MEMORIAM I

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
(From "When Great Trees Fall" by Maya Angelou)

Today I'm doing a two part sequel, in memory of this great tree. It's going to be like one of those "you won't believe what happened next" videos on Facebook, where something remarkable is accidentally filmed (from four different angles, with a professional light crew on set).

Anyway.

I may jest, but what happened to this tree made me realize that people can actually feel a sense of loss - even grief - when these delicate beings are maimed or killed. Maybe I'm just getting old.

There was nice movement in the sky this morning, but rather cold outside and my central heating was ticking away nicely. So I dismissed nature and shot a long exposure from the attic window.

So.... I sat down in front of the computer and discovered my last post has received a lot more pluses than usual - luckily the webcam was running to capture my reaction......

(Joke)

I would like to make two things clear, though:

1) I'm very grateful for the pluses, but for anyone following me due to that picture - you will be disappointed. Run while you can. It's not typical for me - and sun shots are not my forte (even though I am training myself to take more such shots).

2) My bum is definitely not as big as it seems in this picture. It's lens distortion. Or something.

(the shot is something I made for a scavenger hunt, about a year ago, but decided not to use)
