I am curious
I like a lot of what Bernie Sanders says. I like Hillary Clinton as well. (Yes, it's possible to like both.) But if Bernie Sanders were elected President, he would almost certainly face a GOP congress as recalcitrant as ever, and possibly more so (because he's a socialist). Given that, what do you think he might be able to accomplish (via Executive Order or anything else) that would be substantially different than what Hillary Clinton might accomplish? For that matter, substantially different than Barack Obama has accomplished? I'm not arguing there aren't differences, just wondering what specific things you can think of.

The reason I ask is that it is easy to get caught up in positions and big ideas, but they only really matter if they can be done in light of a resistant Congress that seems intent on thwarting any major changes. There are other factors... more »

Be like Bernie Sanders: stick to the issues and keep it clean
I’m getting concerned by the degree of hatred and vitriol that is being leveled at Hillary Clinton recently on Bernie groups (not so much the People For Bernie community, more on Facebook). Note that I am 100% behind Bernie Sanders, have donated what I can afford, bought merch, designed guides, posted like a madman, designed useful guides for the grassroots campaign, and talked to all sorts of people in the real world about Bernie, so don’t question my loyalty here.

Folks need to stop posting articles and memes bashing Hillary. I’ve even seen some actual right wing extremist websites being used as citations to attack her. That’s not us. We’re better than that. We need to follow Bernie’s example by sticking to the issues and keeping it clean.

This is important for a few reasons.
1. We are going to NEED Hillary supporters when Bernie wins the nomination. Should some unforeseen circumstances arise and a different Democratic Party candidate wins, I will support them 100% since no matter who it is they are way better than any of the conservative Republican Party candidates. Bernie will support them too. In the meantime however, assume we are going to win, and we will need their support, so don’t burn any bridges!

2. This contest is not about rumor, scandal, personalities, drama, or like a sports game. This is a real contest between ideas that will have very real effects on real people’s lives. If we stay focused on issues, we win. If we let the conversation descend into infotainment and mudslinging, we will lose.

While it is fair to accurately point out important differences between the candidates, always do it in a respectful, dispassionate way. Have your facts straight and cite your sources. Make it an assessment based on evidence.

If you are in doubt whether you should post content or a comment, ask yourself, What Would Bernie Do?

My decision about this election cycle
Feel free to ignore me (most people do), but I have been torn between the feeling that there are very real issues facing the United States and I don't want to ignore them, and the fact that election cycles tend to devolve into personalities and horse races, and I am not the least bit interested in that game.

So, my decision is that to the extent I can, I will discuss issues and not candidates. After all, if Candidate A takes a position and the Candidate B adopts it as well, I don't give a fig that Candidate A got there first. Also, if a candidate I like takes a position I don't approve of, I'm not going to criticize him/her, but take issue with the position instead. I don't care whether Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush or Rand Paul proposed something if it is a good idea, but I'd rather focus on the idea than... more »

Also, if a candidate I like takes a position I don't approve of, I'm not going to criticize him/her, but take issue with the position instead. I don't care whether Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush or Rand Paul proposed something if it is a good idea, but I'd rather focus on the idea than the candidate. Plenty of airtime and energy will be spent letting people know who stands for what. I don't want any part of that.

Perhaps this is unrealistic, but I care deeply about issues such as fighting racism, providing a strong social welfare system, promoting LGBTQ equality and taking care of the environment. I also care about a sustainable and equitable business environment and the embrace of immigration and other measures to strengthen our country. I am not interested in he said/she said, and I am absolutely against tearing people apart. If Ted Cruz comes up with a position I like, I'll applaud the decision without criticizing the "package" and without smearing the man.

In general, I'll discourage commenters from bringing personalities in, but I plan to actively warn and eventually block people who spread hate on my posts. I can't imagine the bravery it takes to run for President or almost any elected position these days, and I don't intend to be part of the hate storm. Obviously, I am left leaning, but I respect public service and the men and women who seek it out, regardless of what others feel about their motives or methods.___

The mistrust of expertise
We live in a world where people too often mistrust the scientists, doctors and other experts who have dedicated their lives and careers to the study of a subject, yet implicitly trust the charlatans with no discernible source of expertise. Long term, expensive and carefully conducted experiments, research and studies are dismissed in a moment when confronted with a paranoid opinion accompanied by spooky music.

Yes, there are times when scientists are wrong, when doctors are overly influenced by pharmaceutical companies, when experts are not as unbiased as one would like to think. But those are rare and usually get called out by others. Why do people trust more the talk show host or blogger with zero expertise who spouts a rumor built on conspiracies? It feels like the Dark Ages, when superstition was rampant, and it endangers us all.

There are other factors (willingness to go to war for one) why Bernie Sanders might be a better choice, but which of the big ideas he espouses (e.g., free college) do you see him having any realistic chance of accomplishing? Of course, Congress will be just as resistant to Hillary Clinton, so I'm happy to hear any thoughts on what she might be able to accomplish, or any of the other Democratic candidates for that matter.___

I support this (even though if it passed, it would probably be after my third kid finished college). We need a more educated populace, and we need young people who can go out and take on the world not saddled with horrific debts.
