Second Amendment does not apply in Oregon stand off
Carrying a firearm during the commission of a felony (e.g., invasion of federal property) is a crime regardless of whether or not it is used, and that has been upheld as overriding the second amendment. See Oregon statute 161.610. #OregonUnderAttack

Make your own choices
I believe in Hillary Clinton and choose to vote for her, but don't ever let somebody else tell you that you owe somebody your vote. It is up to you and you alone, no matter your gender or race or religion or family.

While Clinton has hired a lot of experts
...there are more out there. I strongly encourage Bernie Sanders to start snapping up some of the talent, as he will need it in the campaign, and it will provide a foundation to build on if he becomes President. Foreign policy may not be at the top of voter priority lists, but is one of the most important tests a new President often faces (see 9/11 for recent example, Bay of Pigs for another). The world doesn't wait for the President to ramp up, so he should start building a team of experts now.

This was posted by the Working Families Party yesterday
Even with the logo, it is unclear if the Sanders campaign authorized it. But if they did, it might explain a bit why POCs are wary about him.

Imagine a small boat and a raging river.
Beside the river is a large pile of heavy dreams. You can row the dreams across one at a time, risking a couple falling overboard and the whole thing taking longer than you would like. Or, you can pile them all in the boat and have the whole boat likely sink as soon as you push off.

We may all have the same destination in mind, but your choice determines how likely any of us are to make it there.

The Goldman Sachs speech that Sanders keeps saying proves Clinton is in the pocket of Wall Street
What I hear is Clinton advocating for women, not some nefarious shill. But listen for yourself, and try to relate this in any way to his comments.

Well said. Clinton and Sanders are both strong, progressive candidates, and buying into the right wing hate machine's endless efforts to take her down because you want one or the other? You're playing right into their hands.

Coin flips did not determine outcome of Iowa
I asked the folks at FiveThirtyEight.com explicitly, since that is the kind of stuff they like to answer. The response I got was: No. the coin flips determined precinct delegates, of which there were about 11,000. those in turn elect the 1,600 county delegates, which in turn go on to nominate the actual 44 delegates from iowa for the national convention.

A switch in 6 of 11,000 precinct delegates would have made no difference at all to end result.

On politics, and my personal decision
I am going to try, though I may fail, to steer clear of politics on-line. I feel like all I do is get upset and probably without convincing anyone of anything. Better to focus on data science and art and trolls (the ones in my novel, not the ones on-line).

Listen with an open mind to as much as you need or can stand. Try to be kind to each other. Then, vote for whomever you think would be best for this country and this world.

The more I hear from Bernie Sanders, the more wary I am
He is a good man with some good ideas. He just plays way too fast and loose with numbers, claiming plans where he only has goals and trying to turn every discussion back to wealth inequality.

Wealth inequality is a very important issue, but it is hardly the only very important issue. Climate change is important, quelling the spread of terrorism is important, containing the spread of nuclear weapons is important, building our economy is important. Sanders turns all of them into discussion of wealth inequality, and while he is even correct that it plays a role in most of them, it is a small role.

Just because you only have a hammer doesn't mean every problem is a nail.

Now, Sanders is a very smart man, so I don't believe he is ignorant of this. Instead, I think he is playing to his base even in areas where he knows he would have to disappoint or hurt them if he were President.
I just think he risks the same sort of problem Republicans got into when they started describing everything as being about low taxes. Reagan used that rhetoric but went ahead and raised taxes when need be (a lot, as it happened). But subsequent GOP nominees got stuck with a philosophy that was unsustainable, which is part of the reason Democrats won in 2008 (the other part being that Bush was a disaster).___

Saturday Scenes
I decided to merge my daily sketch and Saturday Scene. The text is in the image, but I will include it here as well. This is #middlegrade fantasy.

Stooping down, Bernie peered inside. He merely planned to rest there, but the hole seemed more like a tunnel and curved out of sight.

There was room to crawl into the hole, and just enough to turn around if it came to a dead end. Bernie chewed on his lip, trying to decide whether to explore the passage, when a flapping sound in the cave caused him to dive inside. He scurried around the bend. A moment later, he heard two separate swooshes from outside. From the sounds of it, a pair of dragons had flown by.

That made up his mind. Bernie turned away from the cave and continued down into the hole. As he crawled onward, he examined the strange tunnel by the faint light from the moss.

Rule #1 for a peaceful protest: no weapons
If you bring weapons, you don't intend it to stay peaceful. You may intend to shoot first or you may want to provoke an incident, but you know full well that an armed occupation is not destined to be peaceful.

I've been part of several protests, mostly when I was younger. Organizers have always stressed that you should carry absolutely nothing that might be construed as a weapon. No knives, no heavy objects, nothing. It prevents you from using it in the heat of the moment, and it prevents the police or whomever from using it as an excuse. If you bring assault weapons, you can't pretend it is anything but a provocation.

Muslims in America: Our friends, our family, our neighbors, our coworkers.
Terrorists in America (regardless of religion, race or motivation): our enemies to be brought to justice.
Is this really so complicated?

If you like both art and pop culture
This collection is an experiment in blending classic art and pop culture, with a dash of humor. Let me know what you think.

Now, wait a minute
If this study is correct and you extrapolate back, this means that men going to an all-you-can-eat pizzeria with other men did not even eat two slices of pizza on average. Unless this is also an all-you-can-drink pizzeria, this seems unlikely.

I hate to be oblivious, but...
In the new Google+, how do I edit the "Story" part of the profile. Even if it is no longer displayed for some reason, that is where the "About Me" on Blogger information resides, and I can't seem to edit it from there either.

For now, I can just switch back to Classic Google+, but I'm guessing that will go away. Any thoughts, +Gplus Expertise? #googleupdate
