I've avoid doing so before, as I try to stay open to different opinions, but I am uncircling those who unquestioningly accept that anyone who disagrees with Bernie Sanders is inherently corrupt. They have had long enough to see through that specious reasoning, and at this point are being willfully blind to it. This does not apply to those who like Sanders but seem reasonable about the pros and cons of different candidates.

I am a life-long Democrat. I want my party to support and encourage women to be strong, successful leaders in business and elsewhere without fear that they will be labeled as "corporate whores". Government is controlled by the wealthy. So what?
Every election in U.S. history has likewise come about when the wealthy had a lot of control. It is the nature of government that those with wealth tend to have undue power, and those who have power tend to get wealth. (I'm a cynical political science/history major.) But what of it? That isn't going to change. The Russians, Chinese and Cubans all thought they would change it through revolution, and they went a lot farther than the tepid political revolution Bernie Sanders talks about. So, what do you see in all three countries? The wealthy are powerful and the powerful are wealthy. What you don't see is democratic institutions like ours.

Saying that the wealthy have too much power is, frankly, trite. The question is, what are you going to do about it? Take Sanders as an example. He is about as pure a social radical as you get, and as soon as he sees a hint of a chance that he might gain power, he starts getting sloppy all over the place about things like endorsements and taking advantage of data leaks and other ways of cutting corners. I'm not saying anything particularly negative about Sanders, but rather about the nature of power. It corrupts, and it leads people to want to keep it and get more. Same with wealth. So, we are essentially guaranteed to have a system not unlike we do now, or perhaps worse. You could have a real political revolution, and within a few years you would have simply replaced one set of powerful and wealthy with another. I'm not buying that it would change all that much, as history has proven again and again. The only thing it might change as our democracy, and not for the better. Ask others in the world. They might not like everything about us, but they envy our stability and democracy.

I'd prefer to work within the system we have, to respect that it tries hard to mute or balance the natural problems inherent with power, and elect people who don't want to overturn it, but simply shove it gently in the right direction. Revolution sounds exciting, but unless you plan a violent overthrow, the people who will wield power afterwards will be the same ones wielding power now. Even if you have a violent overthrow, all you get is a new group of powerful (and soon wealthy), but what you lose is the democratic institutions which hold them back. No thanks.

Now, this doesn't mean we can't fight income inequality, but that isn't going to happen with a revolution. It is going to happen with an arduous process of political negotiation. I know, no fun, but that is what works. Revolutions just leave a lot of dead bodies.___

While Clinton has hired a lot of experts
...there are more out there. I strongly encourage Bernie Sanders to start snapping up some of the talent, as he will need it in the campaign, and it will provide a foundation to build on if he becomes President. Foreign policy may not be at the top of voter priority lists, but is one of the most important tests a new President often faces (see 9/11 for recent example, Bay of Pigs for another). The world doesn't wait for the President to ramp up, so he should start building a team of experts now.

Imagine a small boat and a raging river.
Beside the river is a large pile of heavy dreams. You can row the dreams across one at a time, risking a couple falling overboard and the whole thing taking longer than you would like. Or, you can pile them all in the boat and have the whole boat likely sink as soon as you push off.

We may all have the same destination in mind, but your choice determines how likely any of us are to make it there.

Coin flips did not determine outcome of Iowa
I asked the folks at FiveThirtyEight.com explicitly, since that is the kind of stuff they like to answer. The response I got was: No. the coin flips determined precinct delegates, of which there were about 11,000. those in turn elect the 1,600 county delegates, which in turn go on to nominate the actual 44 delegates from iowa for the national convention.

A switch in 6 of 11,000 precinct delegates would have made no difference at all to end result.

I am going to try, though I may fail, to steer clear of politics on-line. I feel like all I do is get upset and probably without convincing anyone of anything. Better to focus on data science and art and trolls (the ones in my novel, not the ones on-line).

Listen with an open mind to as much as you need or can stand. Try to be kind to each other. Then, vote for whomever you think would be best for this country and this world.

The more I hear from Bernie Sanders, the more wary I am
He is a good man with some good ideas. He just plays way too fast and loose with numbers, claiming plans where he only has goals and trying to turn every discussion back to wealth inequality.

Wealth inequality is a very important issue, but it is hardly the only very important issue. Climate change is important, quelling the spread of terrorism is important, containing the spread of nuclear weapons is important, building our economy is important. Sanders turns all of them into discussion of wealth inequality, and while he is even correct that it plays a role in most of them, it is a small role.

Just because you only have a hammer doesn't mean every problem is a nail.

Now, Sanders is a very smart man, so I don't believe he is ignorant of this. Instead, I think he is playing to his base even in areas... more »

Instead, I think he is playing to his base even in areas where he knows he would have to disappoint or hurt them if he were President.
I just think he risks the same sort of problem Republicans got into when they started describing everything as being about low taxes. Reagan used that rhetoric but went ahead and raised taxes when need be (a lot, as it happened). But subsequent GOP nominees got stuck with a philosophy that was unsustainable, which is part of the reason Democrats won in 2008 (the other part being that Bush was a disaster).___

Saturday Scenes
I decided to merge my daily sketch and Saturday Scene. The text is in the image, but I will include it here as well. This is #middlegrade fantasy.

Stooping down, Bernie peered inside. He merely planned to rest there, but the hole seemed more like a tunnel and curved out of sight.

There was room to crawl into the hole, and just enough to turn around if it came to a dead end. Bernie chewed on his lip, trying to decide whether to explore the passage, when a flapping sound in the cave caused him to dive inside. He scurried around the bend. A moment later, he heard two separate swooshes from outside. From the sounds of it, a pair of dragons had flown by.

That made up his mind. Bernie turned away from the cave and continued down into the hole. As he crawled onward, he examined the strange tunnel by the faint light from the moss.

Sketch Day 3 - Bernie
Sketch Day 3 I am a little scared to try drawing Bernie, but I decided I might as well give it a try. I don't like the body, hands or feet much, but the face is pretty close to what I want.
